It was always going to be an enthralling prospect- a cinematic take on David Peace's astounding and controversial non-linear novel charting Brian Clough's disastrous and brief tenure in charge of Dirty Leeds. Our original review said enough about the film itself back on its cinematic review, so I'm looking to offer something slightly different...

While most critical reception will have looked little further than Sheen's central performance- and it's a cracker- the supporting cast are exceptional, with the pick of the bunch being a selection of the very best British character actors in the game today- Jim Broadbent as Sam Longson, Stephen Graham as Billy Bremner and Timothy Spall as Peter Taylor- along with the traditionally more functional style of Colm Meaney, who is exceptional as Don Revie the Clough-styled villain of the piece. Spall deserves as many plaudits as Sheen for his take on Clough's right-hand man, and the dynamic between the two is mesmorising, even if the writer's have manipulated it so it appears as more of a romance than might have really been the case. It is no secret that the men were devoted to each other professionally, and personally (even if some of Clough's actions might suggest ...

Don't think this article is to discourage you into avoidance form seeing The Damned United, if you haven't seen it already because that's not my intention at all. It's a marvellously entertaining film, a one which captures the time period and the unreserved cockiness of Brian Clough, perfectly.

I'm sure, give or take a few things, Clough would be very happy how he himself was portrayed. It's a love letter piece of glorification for the great man and the last line of the film is a testament to how we all feel about him. He should have led England to World Cup glory and he was a manger well before his time, a prototype for the kind of manager that Jose Mourinho is today.

It's just that factual writer of the moment Peter Morgan and his blatant disregard for "what actually happened" (which I would say was quite important for a biopic) has reared it's ugly head again and at times, it spoils the movie, just like it hampered Frost/Nixon a few months back.

Morgan dangerously puts no weight or substance into historical chronology and is quite happy to depict his real life characters in fictional moments to add drama that isn't needed because the ...

According to FIFA, association football’s international governing body, there are probably one billion people who play the beautiful game worldwide. Yet despite its global appeal, the world’s most popular sport has a history of failure in one area where others have triumphed.

There are a number of great films which use baseball, basketball, boxing, American football, running or golf as their backdrop. There is not a single truly great film set in the world of football. The Damned United is a worthy yet ultimately unsuccessful attempt to overcome that historic curse.

The movie is an adaptation of an excellent novel by David Peace which mixes fact and fiction to tell two episodes in the life of one of English football’s most legendary figures, Brian Clough (played here by Michael Sheen). One deals with Clough’s first great success as a talented and cocky young football manager who took Derby County Football Club from Second Division oblivion to top-flight success and then threw it all away.

The other follows Clough’s disastrous 44-day tenure at Leeds United, a club which he joined in 1974 despite his hatred for the brutal and amoral antics implanted there by his predecessor and arch-rival, the superstitious and dour Don Revie (Colm ...

Finally Michael Sheen's gonna get the chance to shine in a movie that's all about him. He's playing Brian Clough...full stop!

There's no Helen Mirren, no Kate Beckinsale or Rhona Mitra's tight leather clothing, no Frank Langella giving the performance of his life as Richard Nixon.

Just Sheen as Clough. And we can see it from March 27th...

Morning folks, Peter here.

From the writer of THE QUEEN and FROST/NIXON comes THE DAMNED UNITED, the story of Brian Clough's infamous 44 day role as manager of Leeds United. Back in August of last year Matt brought us a preview of the movie. Today we have a first look at the move thanks to a 2 minute trailer.

As a somewhat strange coincidence as I was sat watching the trailer a work colleague (no... OWF isn't my day job!) turned to me and said, "Hey - I was in that!". His role was limited but as he very proudly pointed out - he did have a line in the movie! Here are the thoughts of William Conboy on his role as an extra in THE DAMNED UNITED, which is released on March 29th in the UK.
Following a phone call from a casting agency, which I had joined upon chance after being spotted at university, I immediately received calls from ‘wardrobe’ and ‘make-up’... The outfit and style they chose for me was a far cry from my personal style, but then the film in question was based in the swinging 60’s... Tweed jackets, kipper ties and outrageous sideburns... All in a day’s ...

There has yet to be a really good movie made out of possibly the greatest and most universally played sport in the world today... football (soccer). There's been any number of great boxing movies, a couple of good baseball one's even the American style of football has had some good flicks.

But what the Brits call football, not so much.

Sure the imagery of seeing Michael Caine and Sylvester Stallone play football alongside the World Cup Winners of Pele, Bobby Moore and Ossie Ardiles whilst going toe to toe with the Nazi's in The Great Escape rip-off - Escape to Victory, was extremely fun and actually quite breathtaking but following the football aspect itself was hard to follow and badly shot.

Similarly, the 2005 movie Goal about MY team, my Newcastle United... clearly the football was secondary to the story of a guy wanting to prove himself in a foreign land at his craft and to his parents. It wasn't really about football at all, you could change the sport and it would still work just the same. There was no great passion for the sport there, it felt like a commercial film that was riding on the coat tails of English football.

Though ...

It's been well over a year since the project was greenlit and I actually thought it had fallen victim of neglection but Variety are reporting the great news that Peter Morgan's adaptation of the late eccentric soccer manager Brian Clough's biopic The Damned United has just been picked up by Sony after they made the producers "an offer they couldn't refuse".

The studio have put up $10 million to finance the flick alongside BBC Films and will distribute the movie worldwide - where previously it was to be distributed by small Indie shingles Ealing Studios Intl. (U.S.) and Optimum Releasing (U.K.).

Vets Jim Broadbent, Timothy Spall and Colin Meaney have joined the cast which will see the incredibly transforming Michael Sheen lead as the always outspoken "Cloughie".

Sadly director Stephen Frears won't be making the movie an almost complete reunion of The Queen as he has now stepped aside and it will be Tom Hooper who will helm. His biggest gig to date was directing the John Adams mini-series which is playing in the U.S. right now and he also directed a 2004 Hilary Swank movie I've never heard of - Red Dust.

Also gone is the name Bloody United and it's expected the ...
