So it's been a week now since the red carpet rolled its weary way back up the main steps of the Palais des Festivals, and high time I posted my closing words...

A Note On The Winners

Proof if ever it were needed that, despite the innumerate accusations that Cannes has steadily dumbed down since Tarantino walked away with the Palm d'Or, that the judges cannot be swayed by the often irresistible charms of the more commercial films in competition. Here follows a selection of the winners...

Palm d'Or Winner- The White Ribbon [Michael Haneke]
Grand Prix Winner- A Prophet [Jacques Audiard]
	Director- Alain Resnais [Wild Grass]
Jury Prize- Fish Tank [Andrea Arnold] Thirst [Park Chan-Wook]
	Actor- Christoph Waltz [Inglourious Basterds]
	Actress- Charlotte Gainsbourg [Antichrist]

A major shame that Ken Loach could come away with any more than the Ecumenical Prize for Looking For Eric- though no more of a surprise than the decision to ignore Taking Woodstock. Christoph Waltz's performance in Inglourious Basterds deserves as many plaudits as will surely come its way, with the holiest of all a good bet next February, but Charlotte Gainsbourg looks more than a little lucky to have been favoured over mesmerising new-comer Katie Jarvis (Fish Tank). But then, it has become ...

Status: In Competition

I have always admired Ang Lee from a distance- always aware of the prowess of his artistry as a director, but not always attracted to his subject matter, but ever since the early rumours of this project started to break I was gripped. The prospect of a film about something so close to my heart- the festival scene and live music in general- aroused my interest long before it was announced that Taking Woodstock would be playing at Cannes 2009. Im a strong believer that there are several moments in popular musical history that deserved the cinematic treatment- the birth of the Madchester music scene (happily now served by 24 Hour Party People), the Californian musical revolution (some sort of adaptation of Barney Hoskyns' Hotel California would be a fantastic prospect), the age of the rock journalist (captured by the sublime Almost Famous) and the early days of Woodstock. Thanks to Ang Lee and Taking Woodstock I now have three out of four, and Im just as impressed with it as I am the other two movies I've just mentioned. In fact, even more.

Being already pretty well versed on the history of the festival, and the music business in general ...

Just under two weeks before I jet off to the Cote D’Azur. Suppose now would be a good time to start my Cannes coverage, starting with a bit of a brief introduction…

I’ll be staying here…

Maeva Club Résidence Valescure, Saint-Raphael

A studio for four people. For just me. I feel like Kevin McCallister.

A slight pity that it’s so far outside of Cannes itself (45mins by car), but it was an inevitability, and the simple fact of the matter is I’m going to be attending the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, covering the premier European film event on the calendar. I’d have walked from here.

The particular highlights are innumerate: I personally like the approach they’ve taken this year in screening so many dark-looking movies, after all this year isn’t exactly panning out to be a barrel of laughs what with the economy still struggling along, the impending swine flu pandemic and the increasing realisation that our governments aren’t actually out to look after 90% of the population.

It goes without saying that my excitement at the prospect of seeing Inglorious Basterds, Drag Me to Hell, The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus and even Up is palpable, and hopefully you’ll be interested in my take on ...

Debuting, as it should, at Rolling Stone is the poster for Ang Lee's comedy/drama Taking Woodstock which is likely to give you a headache if you stare at it for too long and is almost impossible to read the tagline, making it a rather useless piece of film marketing. But pretty nonetheless...

The tagline according to Movie Poster Addict reads; “A Generation Began in His Backyard”.

The Focus Features production adapts the memoir of Elliot Tiber, who set the wheels in motion for the historical 1969 music festival which defined a generation. Comedian Demetri Martin stars as Tiber with Emile Hirsch, Paul Dano, Liev Schrieber, Jeffrey Dean Morgan among others supporting.

I must have been having a busy day, but it seems a few weeks back I missed the trailer debut for the film...

The movie opens Aug. 14th (U.S.) and Oct. 30th (U.K.)

Production will begin later this month on Ang Lee's next movie Taking Woodstock, a Focus Features production which adapts the memoir of Elliot Tiber, who set the wheels in motion for the historical 1969 music festival which defined a generation.

Variety say casting is complete, Emile Hirsch, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Imelda Staunton and Liev Schreiber are the latest foursome to join the picture. For Hirsch, it's another big role for an actor who just 12 months ago was known as "that kid from The Girl Next Door".

Comedian Demetri Martin is still attached to play the lead role of Tiber, Staunton and Henry Goodman his parents, Hirsch a returning Vietnam vet, Jonathan Groff the Woodstock organiser, Eugene Levy as Yasgur and Schrieber is in talks to play a TRANSVESTITE!

Watchmen's Jeffrey Dean Morgan will play a closet gay who is having an affair with Tiber despite his straight marriage, Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan will play a hippie couple at the concert, Dan Fogler a theatre manager and Mamie Gummer will play Lang's assistant.

Big ensemble movie and what that continually reminds me of his great movie The Ice Storm, that deconstructed the middle class society of a early 70's Suburbia.

Comedian Demetri Martin is in final talks for the starring role in Ang Lee's next movie Taking Woodstock - a film based on Elliot Tiber's memoir as the in-the-closet gay guy working at this parents motel who inadvertently sets the wheels in motion for the generation-defining concert of 1969.

I can't say I know the guy but a lot of pages come up when I type his name in Google, so he must be someone famous. Maybe he hasn't made the transition to the U.K.

Taking Woodstock will be Martin's first leading role, though he will have a small role in two comedies next year The Rocker and The Post Grad Survival Guide.

Ang Lee is once again proving himself to be a director whose project choices are incredibly unpredictable (or maybe not if we delve deeper - see after the cover).

Following on from his brilliant spy thriller Lust, Caution - which came after the gay western Brokeback Mountain - which came after the comic book movie Hulk... comes a drama about the summer of 1969 and the events of Woodstock.

Variety say Lee will direct and his frequent partner in crime James Schamus will scribe a COMEDY based on Elliot Tiber's memoir "Taking Woodstock: A True Story of a Riot, Concert, and a Life," co-written with author Tom Monte.

Set during the politically turbulent summer of '69, story follows an Everyman working at his parents' motel in the Catskills who inadvertently sets in motion what would become the generation-defining concert.

The pic will have one lead, based on Tiber, and a colorful ensemble. Speculation about original or period music was not confirmed, though the film is assuredly not going to be about the famed concert itself.
What the trades seem to have neglected mentioning and what I have found in my research via google, Tiber is actually gay. Is Ang Lee once again touching on sexual ...
