For action film geeks the world over Saturday 24th October will be remembered as a holy day indeed.

The setting quite fittingly was a church. God had brought together the icons that are Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone to shoot what will no doubt become a legendary scene of pop culture cinema for The Expendables, a movie described as "a home coming of tough guys".

Even if it seems no action actually took place and in the end it was just a dialogue scene, but oh well. It's still just about the coolest thing that has happened this year.

AICN called it the day hell froze over. Here's a full description of what went down thanks to the film's official blog, which for some reason I have it in my head is run by supporting actor Eric Roberts. Lionsgate tease that some photo's of the day will be online for us to view soon but with the movie not due out until August 2010, maybe they would be wise to hold back for a little while...
I arrived at the location around 6:15am and Bruce and Sly were inside the church running lines. Arnold pulled up about 20 minutes later – I ...

For a movie only announced last November, we sure have gotten ourselves into a frantic frenzy for Sly Stallone's The Expendables, coming from a writer/director and actor who we heard previously might have been contemplating action movie retirement after the two nostaglia fests Rocky Balboa and Rambo.

Looking at the photo's of him on the set of this movie recently, you think he continue doing this for a good while yet.

The above poster is the official artwork sent over from Lionsgate and which is apparentaly making the rounds at Cannes. Below is a look at a big teaser one sheet.

Meanwhile whilst we are talking The Expendables, AICN have been sent some spy photo's from filming and the one below caught my attention. Two icons of action, Ivan Drago and Rocky Balboa! Back together!

The Expendables is set for release in April 2010.

Thanks to AICN for the heads-up!

Who thinks it was a pre-requisite for this "home coming of tough guys" that all actors who came on board had to do their own stunts?

Roberts is north of 50. Good on ya man!

First Showing also carried a link to this photo of Stallone and Jason Statham on set, which originally came from here.

The Expendables keeps getting Expandable. The Hollywood Reporter say Brittany Murphy has joined the film as girlfriend/singer to Mickey Rourke's character. She will get a musical number to perform in the film.

Sly Stallone's film which he also leads, is now filming in Rio and Spoiler TV recently featured the first images from the set, which actually made some of the British newspapers yesterday...

He's having fun doing this ain't he?

You can see a full image gallery, HERE.

The same site have a video of the filming above, which is quite funny.

Insane cast looks like this...

Syvlester Stallone (Barney Ross)

Jason Statham (Lee Christmas)

Mickey Rourke (Emanuel)

Jet Li (Bao)

Dolph Lundgren (Gunnar Jensen)

Eric Roberts (Monroe)

Arnold Schwarzenegger (small cameo as someone who goes "way back" with Stallone's Barney Ross)

Charisma Carpenter (probably the role Sandra Bullock turned down)

Brittany Murphy (as Rourke's girlfriend and a singer)
Danny Trejo, Randy Corture, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Terry Crews, David Zayas, Liam Hemsworth and mixed martial art twins Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.

Two bits of sad news to broadcast here my fellow geeks.

First up, the lowball $250,000 offer from the recession hit Marvel to Mickey Rourke to play the main villain Crymson Dynamo in IRON MAN 2, proved to be too low for the actor.

He tells New York Magazine...
"Right now, we're not doing Iron Man 2," Rourke told us grimly.
Instead as we heard yesterday, he has now officially signed on to appear in THE EXPENDABLES which will shoot at the same time as Marvel's Tony Stark sequel.

Rourke owes Stallone a lot. If you watched that really inspiring interview last week between Rourke and Charlie Rose you will have heard the story that Stallone paid the majority fee to get Rourke to appear in GET CARTER at the turn of the century when the studio wasn't keen on his casting choice.

His role in GET CARTER was the beginning of Rourke's come back in the industry.

Simply put, Rourke owes Stallone a lot and he has turned down a high profile role as a thank you to Stallone and most likely for the better paycheck.

In other, kind of related news. AICN are now firmly back tracking on the Arnie in THE EXPENDABLES story we ran ...

UPDATED: Latino Review have the scoop that Danny Trejo (ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO, MACHETE) has a role in the movie. For a "home coming of tough guys", how can you go wrong with a guy whose face carries the same hard man world weariness as Charles Bronson?

I have a feeling Sly Stallone got on his knees and begged Arnold Schwarzenegger, his much compared action hero peer of the 80's and 90's, to star in THE EXPENDABLES.

But in the end, he could only get Arnie for one day of shooting. Which is still mega cool.

AICN have heard that Arnie will play Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in the movie, a small cameo that revolves around a confrontation between Stallone's fictional character Barney Ross and Arnie playing himself. Somehow, don't ask me the details, but in this move universe it seems both have a history dating back to when Arnie was shooting CONAN THE BARBARIAN.

It's a meta-film connection I guess, can't wait to see it. And it isn't actually the first time they have appeared together as Arnie recently filmed a small role in the Indian movie INCREDIBLE LOVE which Stallone has a considerable part in. That movie premieres in India in ...

Fuck me!

Stallone, who remember is 62!, will begin shooting his ensemble war picture next month.

Meanwhile Brazilian site Omelete claim claim Brit actor Scot Adkins (he played Agent Kiley in THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM and will play Weapon XI in X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE) has been cast for the role of Paine described earlier as...
the head of General Garza’s security detail. His orders are to take the Expendables out. He eventually snags one of the mercenaries and tries to siphon details out of him.
The site also mention PRISON BREAK actor Robert Knepper for the cast, a name I have not heard previously for the film.

Also it's claimed Mickey Rourke's role has been heavily reduced to coincide with his IRON MAN 2 shooting schedule, where he play one of the main villains, the Russian Crymson Dynamo.

Mickey Rourke played a "broken down piece of meat" in THE WRESTLER and proved he was far from expendable in a role he might well win an Academy Award for if sentimentality plays it's part with the voters.

His first cast role since the buzz from THE WRESTLER? Well it's going to be THE EXPENDABLES. Sly Stallone has once again kept to his promise of hiring larger than life personalities for his ensemble war picture and has cast Rourke to play an unscrupulous arms dealer who becomes the go-to guy for a group of mercenaries planning to topple a South American dictator.

Variety claim Rourke is repaying a favour to Stallone for bringing him back from the depths of cinematic obscurity when he cast him for GET CARTER in 2000.

Rourke was one of the names I kept hoping Tarantino would cast in INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, hoping he would resurrect his career, but this way back in the days before KILL BILL. Instead it was Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez who gave him the role of Marv which brought Rourke back in a big way.

Now Stallone isn't reviving his career. He's just simply utilising it.

OWF writer Simon Gallagher insists that when I mention Sir. Ben Kingsley's name, it must have his title attached at the beginning. Which is fine by me, if any thesp has deserved such a title it is he and his work in ELEGY this year and from what I hear his performance in THE WACKNESS are prime examples of how he is still one of the greatest working actors in Hollywood today.

And he's not afraid to do populist movies either. He's already shot his villain part in the massive Disney blockbuster PRINCE OF PERSIA and now comes word that Sylvester Stallone expects to get Kingsley involved in THE EXPENDABLES, his "home coming of tough guys" war picture. You can see Stallone make the announcement at Extra TV.

Stallone also confirmed the casting of Forest Whitaker which was also confirmed by the trades, though it would appear Sandra Bullock won't be in the film. A spokeswoman for Nu Image/Millenium Films said it was “merely wishful thinking for fans.”

Moviehole expect Kingsley to play the character of Church...
Church is the man that hires the ‘Expendables’ (run by ‘Barney’ and ‘Christmas’, assumingly the characters played by Stallone and Statham, respectively) to go after General Garza ...

Sylvester Stallone is chasing his DEMOLITION MAN co-star Sandra Bullock for his upcoming ensemble war picture THE EXPENDABLES according to JoBlo. They don't cite their sources but it's a rumor that isn't hard to believe given the talent Stallone has attempted to put together here.

Bullock is being lined up to play a government agent who is paired up with Forest Whitaker (who presumably isn't playing the South American dictator as I previously speculated) on the hunt for Stallone's crew of hired guns.

Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Jason Statham and Randy Corture also star in what is described as "a home coming of tough guys" and is seen as Stallone's answer to Quentin Tarantino's snub for INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, of which Stallone was frequently inviting a firm acting offer.

Bullock who for years I've criticised for playing it "safe" with rom-com after rom-com, who be making a bold and welcomed move forward if she agrees to star in this one. Her upcoming movies THE PROPOSAL and ALL ABOUT STEVE, are movies she should have moved away from a long time ago.

One of the exciting things about this project is seeing what actors Stallone has been chasing. And making this even more enticing this ...

Similar to last week's story of the mid 90's comic book adaptation flop THE PHANTOM getting the reboot treatment, is a story that broke over the weekend involving JUDGE DREDD.

According to the CEO of DNA Films (British company behind SUNSHINE and 28 WEEKS LATER), a new movie in the DREDD universe will be put into production by them early next year and importantly, it will have no connection to the previous Sylvester Stallone disaster...

‘We can’t give away too many details at this point, but we’re looking forward to working with DNA Films to bring Judge Dredd back to the big screen.’
The story broke at the 2000AD Message Boards but I sourced it at AICN.

The original DREDD grossed only $34 million domestic from a budget of $90 million.

One of the fundamental flaws of the original (believe me, there was a lot more wrong with the movie, I just mean one of the things that always irked me about it) was the fact that Stallone was seen for much of the movie without his helmet on. It's kind of like having a SPIDER-MAN movie with Tobey Maguire full in costume expect the face mask for the majority of the film. It doesn't ...

Presumably Whitaker plays the South American dictator who Stallone's team of mercenaries are attempting to overthrow. Whitaker's most famous role was as Idi Amin, the Ugandan dictator for whom he won an Academy Award two years ago for portraying in THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND.

Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham, Jet Li make up the rest of the cast so far.

AICN heard the news from their good friend Stallone, who also told them that Jet Li and Dolph Lundgren will be fighting one on one in movie, which is enough to get B-movie action geeks very excited indeed.

They fought each other in ROCKY IV but now Rocky Balboa and Ivan Drago are teaming up to take down a South American dictator, as a team of mercenaries that also includes Jason Statham and Jet Li.

Sylvester Stallone revealed during an interview at the premiere of TRANSPORTER 3, that Dolph Lundgren had been cast in his upcoming writing/directing action ensemble THE EXPENDABLES.

Stallone calls it a "home coming of tough guys" and is clearly his answer to being snubbed by Quentin Tarantino for his World War II epic INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS.

He's doing the kind of kick-ass movie with the kind of action orientated stars that Tarantino originally said he was looking for when he mentioned BASTERDS would star the likes of Arnie, Bruce Willis and Jean Claude Van Damme.

Great cast so far for Stallone and isn't this so much more exciting than seeing him wheel out ROCKY or RAMBO again?

Sylvester Stallone is making his first original, non-franchised movie since the little seen thriller AVENGING ANGELO in 2002.

Variety say the actor will star and direct THE EXPENDABLES, a action thriller that follows a team of mercenaries on a mission to overthrow a South American dictator.

Stallone also wrote the screenplay which has THE ONE & WAR duo Jason Statham attached and Jet Li in final talks. The movie is being made at Nu Image, the studio behind his last film RAMBO.

Could this be his answer to Quentin's snub for INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS? Is Stallone going to find more action A-listers to fill his cast and go balls-to-the-wall with a no holds barred RAMBO-esque violent frenzy!

Filming will begin in February in Costa Rica and Louisiana.

Anyone who was even remotely a movie fan in the 80's or early 90's will have had a desire to see this. Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, when will they ever do a movie together? It's like De Niro and Pacino, just we never got our Heat, or even our Godfather Part II where they were in the same movie but never on screen together.

If for no other reason, we wanted to see it to fulfill our curiosity and fanboy discussions. After all, who would win in a fight between these two legendary icons?

Rambo vs. Commando?

Rocky vs. Conan?

Judge Dredd vs. Terminator?

For whatever reason, they were never cast together either in their prime - or just post-prime. How no studio never plumbed up the cash for a certain goldmine that was a Stallone/Schwarnegger vehicle is beyond me, although in their favour I guess the truth was they only need one of the two to make a big box office hit.

It's the kind of intriguing partnership that has fuelled Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Bastards to the massive hype that potential big star project carries with every mention, though recently it looks like both men have debunked any suggestion they would star in it.

But ...

Sylvester Stallone has gone insane. Not content with changing the title of his fourth Rambo movie about 99 times during it's production, he has only gone and done it again during months after it's release.

Does he regret simply calling his movie Rambo? Should he even care at this point? It's done... move on, work on something else!

Here's the scoop from AICN...
don’t know if you watched Leno last night, but he had Sylvester Stallone on to push the RAMBO DVD release. Sly announced during the interview that later on (hopefully this year but he didn’t give a time-frame) he will release a “Director’s Cut” of the film, and give it the original title JOHN RAMBO.
WHY?

And not actually the best business sense to announce such a deal when next week see's the release of the films on Blu-Ray and Standard DVD. OOPS!

Now that you have Rambo and Rocky completely out of your system (you do don't ya Sly?) and it was great to see some nostalgia for five minutes but now let's see some really good pieces of dramatic work before you call it a day. Make that Poe movie you have been jabbering on about for years now... you've spoke about ...

[rating: 3]

Make no mistake this isn’t going to be a particularly intelligent, taxing or generally politically correct action thriller. This is Rambo remember and therefore all bets are off for non-stop bullet-burning no bars held explicit violence and bloody carnage. What sets it apart from the last sequel (the now chronologically incorrect Rambo III, 1988) is that it’s actually pretty damn good (or bad?) and comes across as a rather indulgently gritty and guilty cinematic pleasure. Not withstanding the dated corny dialogue (“Killing is as easy as breathing”), blurred political agenda and sometime turgid acting style Rambo, mark four, is a descent stab (pun intended) at a rebirth of one of the 80s most iconic heroes’ and, alongside the latest Rocky instalment, marks a welcome return of our now rugged 62 year old action hero Sylvester Stallone.

The beauty of the Rambo films is that they actually have a political agenda. There not just simply orchestrated violence aimed at gun happy republicans (though Ronald Regan was a self-confessed ...

Yeah I could understand the audience want for seeing Sly Stallone back as ROCKY. He has his fans. I guess I'm one of them too.

An Icon of the 70's and with Stallone's career in the twilight years right now, a nice nostalgic trip was fine. Not that I was all too happy with the final result of ROCKY BALBOA, but I could understand why fans wanted him back.

RAMBO, I was less sure about. Though with $40 million domestic haul so far, it's been a success. The character made some money and everyone seem pretty pleased with the final result.

But a return of Stallone's hotshot mountain climber and rescue worker Gabe Walker? Oh you remember man, he was the guy from CLIFFHANGER. Does anyone really wanna go there again?

After receiving favourable reviews for bringing back Rocky and Rambo, the action man is planning to revisit rock climber Gabe Walker from 1993 film Cliffhanger, according to reports.

Sony studio executives are in negotiations with Stallone to revive the character for THE DAM.
CLIFFHANGER (directed by Renny Harlin, whose career has dropped so far he's doing WWE movies!) was not exactly Stallone's finest hour and I can't see any fan demand in seeing him bring ...

In an utterly confusing and typically uninformative article from The Hollywood Reporter today, it's been reported that Sylvester Stallone has made a lucrative agreement to star in two future action projects at Nu Image/Millennium Films, the studio behind the latest RAMBO movie.

It's currently not known what those action projects are but obviously my first instinct is a RAMBO 5, something that Stallone has been less opposed to than another ROCKY movie.

The trades say a couple of scripts are currently in circulation with the recent WGA interim making it possible to work on these projects whilst the big studio's are still restricted from putting pen to paper. Production is expected to be up and running before the end of the fall.

Which is all very interesting. Stallone in the past has made it quite known that he wanted his next two projects to be a remake of the Charles Bronson classic DEATH WISH and his long talked about biopic of Edgar Allen Poe. Has the lure of big money tempted Stallone back into an action franchise instead, specifically another RAMBO movie or is it simply that he couldn't get the funding off the ground for the other two projects?

Do we want to ...
