The odd crossings in the career paths of the much compared comedians Steve Carell and Jim Carrey is set to continue according to The Hollywood Reporter's Risky Business Blog, which as far as I can tell, is an outlet that exists for the trade when they only have a loose shred of evidence but not enough to give a full official story.

They say Steve Carell, who was only ever loosely attached to Kyle Kilen's Black List screenplay The Beaver has been unable to commit to the project, and director Jay Roach has also dropped out.

Jim Carrey is said to be interested in stepping into Carell's shoes and has emerged as the leading candidate to play a man who wears a beaver puppet on his arm, which he talks to and treats as a companion. It's a lot like Lars and the Real Girl (in which the inanamate object was a blow up sex doll) and has the offbeat sense of a Charlie Kaufman script.

It's not Ace Ventura by any means, this is a offbeat comedy more in the vein of the ones which win critical acclaim, the ones that carry the emotional pathos of something like The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the ...

Just like he did with the supporting roles for Night at the Museum, director Shawn Levy has managed to convince some Hollywood leading players to appear in second-tier parts for an upcoming film of his, securing deals with Mark Wahlberg and James Franco this week.

The movie is Date Night, the Steve Carrell and Tina Fey rom-com which will be shot during the pairs breaks on The Office and 30 Rock respectively sometime late Summer for 20th Century Fox.

Also on board are Taraji P. Henson, Common, Kristen Wiig and Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester. Levy tells Variety, that he managed to convince these "formidable actors" because they all wanted to work with the two comedy leads.

Written by Shrek the Third scribe Josh Klausner, the movie follows a couple who find their routine date night becomes something much more than either initially expected.

Wahlberg plays a "crazily buff" securities expert who flirts with Tina Fey.

Franco is a petty criminal and not to bright con-man.

Meester is the couple's babysitter.

Henson plays "the one good cop" who thinks the couple are in danger.

Common plays the villain (IN A ROM-COM, what sort of character description is that?)

Wiig plays best friend to Fey.

Love me some Steve Carell comedy and picturing him working off Tina Fey works well in ...

Two Steve Carell stories in one post for you on this rather gloomy Thursday morning.

First up, Jay Roach's (AUSTIN POWERS, MEET THE PARENTS) comedy DINNER FOR SCHMAUCKS will film in October according to Variety.

Steve Carell and Paul Rudd, two stars of THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN will lead the comedy that sees Carell play the most pathetic guest to ever grace one man's weekly dinner gathering.

Sacha Baron Cohen was once set to star in what is a remake of a French 1998 comedy written and directed by Francis Veber but when Dreamworks/Paramount split, he bailed on the project. The project is now with Spyglass Entertainment/Paramount... though Dreamworks still have a 33% stake in the film and it's profits.

Carell and Rudd = Laughs a plenty as far as I'm concerned and I've enjoyed more Jay Roach movies than I've hated, that's for sure.

And the second Steve Carell story from the trades today is that he has struck a deal with Warner Bros. to star and produce HI-T, the comedy that revolves around a man dealing with uncontrollable mood swings after an injury forces him to take testosterone injections.

LICENSE TO WED writer Kim Barker is scripting.

Let's hope that one doesn't get made.

Steve Carell is attached to play a guy who walks around with a beaver puppet on his hand, treating it like a human with sensitive feelings.

The movie is THE BEAVER and it's set up at Anonymous Content from first time writer Kyle Killen, a 30ish USC grad whose writing career had built up as far as writing for small time literary magazines before taking a shot at Hollywood.

Immediately LARS AND THE REAL GIRL comes to mind but with Carell on board, I would expect a way more out there comedy approach. A director is now being sought after (AUSTIN POWERS and MEET THE PARENTS director Jay Roach was being lined up but that fell through) before the movie will be sold to studio's.

The Hollywood Reporter say many studio's are interested because the script is "whimsical and winning".

Post-GET SMART, Carell has lined up a nice array of options for what he could work on doing his break from The Office. Expect him to work on two from the following... THE ADVENTURES OF BRIGADIER GERARD, DATE NIGHT, THE BEAVER and of course a sequel to GET SMART.

SHERLOCK HOLMES creator Arthur Conan Doyle's lesser known character BRIGADIER GERARD is to be adapted into a Steve Carell vehicle over at Media Rights Capital, if the studio can convince the actor this project is one of two projects he should make during his break next year on The Office.

The movie is eyeing a early 2009 start and will take the light hearted Napoleonic character and transform him into a studio comedy from the writers of BLADES OF GLORY.

From Variety...
Carell will play the title character, the bravest soldier in Napoleon’s army and also the dumbest. Gerard follows Napoleon from his rise to power to his permanent exile.
Basically, it's GET SMART but set in the Napoleon era which might put him off repeating himself so soon even if he does like the idea of the movie.

The other projects he has to choose from are a GET SMART 2 (which I guess would be repeating himself completely), the rom-com DATE NIGHT with Tina Fey from director Shawn Levy and Carell is said to have some ideas of his own he wishes to explore.

Steve Carell and Tina Fey will play a married couple in Date Night, the next movie from Shawn Levy once he has finished working on his Night at the Museum sequel.

Written by Shrek the Third scribe Josh Klausner, the movie follows a couple who find their routine date night becomes something much more than either initially expected.

"I wanted to do a relatable, grounded character comedy about marriage and the lengths we go to preserve the spark," Levy told Daily Variety. "Tina and Steve are smart and relatable, and the tone of their comedy perfectly fits this film."
To tie in with both Carell and Fey's t.v. commitments, the film will shoot next year during the duel hiatus on The Office and 30 Rock.

Really enjoying Steve Carell's work right now, is their a more likeable on screen personality today?

Shame that Levy with Big Fiat Liar, Just Married, Cheaper by the Dozen, The Pink Panther and Night at the Museum - has yet to make a watchable movie.

A revamped 60s comedy series starring big screen mainstay Steve Carell, Dwayne "don't call me The Rock or I'll smash your face" Johnson and casting wild card Anne Hathaway. Expecting it to be a bit lame? I was.

Especially considering some of the negative buzz that surrounded it in early debates and the long-lead reviews. But I'm pleased to report that it's actually not that bad. It might be that I'm still reeling from some of the crap that's been hurled my way this summer. We've had the pitiful Baby Mama waving big names from past and present in our faces in the hope of a smile, Mike Myers talking a heck of a lot about poop and penises in The Love Guru and Eddie Murphy digging the final few spadefuls of dirt from his already incredibly deep cinematic grave in Meet Dave; so whilst I hope to convince you that this movie is amusing, do bear in mind the comedy wasteland I've faced this summer.

Some reviewers would have you believe that this movie merely hangs on to its audience through the irreverant charm of the ever popular Carrel. It's true that he manages to keep up his buffoonish lovable demeanour ...

So there's a totally unfounded rumor online at Dread Central that Judd Apatow has not only convinced Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Dan Ackroyd and Ernie Hudson to return for a third Ghost Busters movie some twenty years after the last picture but also that they would use the film to pass the torch to Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Seth Rogen and Romany Malco.

All four actors made up the core cast of The 40 Year Old Virgin and have since starred in many various Apatow projects.

But as with every Ghost Busters rumor of the last ten years, Bill Murray seems in no mood to do another of these pictures no matter how much money they throw at him.

Why would things be so different now?

Though I would say this. If Apatow could ever convince Ackroyd, Ramis & Murray to give up the rights to the series (and if anyone could, it would be Apatow) then I'm convinced he could make a great movie with his usual crew AS LONG as he didn't got the remake route.

For example, I would rather see Rogen as a new character, rather than trying to be Bill Murray.

And this kind of rumor story isn't particularly new. A ...

It's so up my alley. Steve Carell in the last four years has propelled himself into being one of the most likeable comedic actors we have today and in a weird way, he seems to have been born to play a dumb secret agent!

No actor in a movie this Summer, with the possible exception of Bale as Batman feels more perfect that Steve Carell in this movie.

5 hilarious t.v. spots CAN BE SEEN RIGHT HERE. See The Rock walk into a wall multiple times!

Co-starring is Terrence Stamp, Alan Arkin, Terry Crews and I'm so glad they have kept the footage quiet and it hasn't leaked but Bill Murray for a cameo. I'm so thankful they didn't hore that out in the trailers!

Look for this on June 20th (U.S.) and sadly July 10th (U.K.)

With some terrific reviews, the animated adaptation of Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who has made a massive $45.1 million on it's debut weekend in nearly 4,000 theatres. The film is third highest opening for a Jim Carrey movie ever just behind Bruce Almighty (which also starred Steve Carell) and How the Grinch Stole Christmas (another Dr. Seuss adaptation).

Jim Carrey's first ever animated voice work (I know, I was surprised by that tidbit too) looks to be a hit, though 20th Century Fox had to pull out a decent amount to hire both these stars. The film's budget was $85 million, a figure it should be able to see a return on but to be a massive winner it's going to need to do well internationally.

A big 54% drop for Roland Emmerich's awful looking epic 10,000 B.C. leaves that movie on a ten day gross of $61.2 million, which is WELL under the $109 million budget. Again that movie is going to need international numbers for a profit.

A little surprising to me was the movie that ended in third. Summit Entertainment's first hit Never Back Down, a martial arts drama starring young and mostly unknown actors opened with a $8.6 ...

[rating: 3.5]

Dr. Seuss adaptations, a veritable minefield for the children's filmmaker. How do you adapt such crazy works of genius without stepping on someone's toes or losing the magic of the original (or if not the original, the campy cult cartoon classics!) Well, I don't have the answer, but in Horton Hears A Who we find a very solid attempt that comes off well.

The first thing that's been done right is it's plumped for animation, replete with a little bit of Dr. Seuss illustration thrown in early on as a fop to purists. There is no way that the absolute absurdity of the worlds created in these tales can transfer to any other medium in my book, so this is just playing to it's strengths. In terms of staying true to the spirit of the original - that magic phrase applied to adaptations as diverse as Alice in Wonderland and Brick Lane - ...
