You guys still with me after last night's Spider-Man fiasco?

I just wanna add a few more of my own personal thoughts on Sony's shocking throwing in of the towel on the successful Spidey franchise it took them ten years to build and their sudden, rather despicable setting of a new precedent that has left me disheartened for the future of comic book movies, and dejected as a life-long Spider-Man fan.

Let me take you back to one of my favourite Spider-Man comic stories...

When a young adult Peter Parker throws the Spidey costume in the trash can in Stan Lee's famous Spider-Man: No More story in Amazing Spider-Man No. 50, it moved me emotionally as a teenage reader.

The story turned out to be a pivotal moment for the life of the character and forever taught me the lesson that it's too easy to give up, it's too easy to leave your responsibilities behind but the right thing to do is to keep on fighting, pull your socks up and just get on with it. The world keeps on revolving and so do you. Buckle up because life's a long and tough ride and it's supposed to be.

No good comes from getting things ...

In what is an absolute travesty for comic book movie fans everywhere and an embarrassingly short-sighted, rather insane over-reaction from the heads at Sony - a studio press release has just gone out confirming today's late in the day report from dynamic duo Mike Fleming & Nikki Finke that SONY ARE REBOOTING THE SPIDER-MAN FRANCHISE!

As we all expected he would, director Sam Raimi did the right thing and walked out on the series when he couldn't have The Vulture as a villain.

Sony then made the audacious decision to reboot the whole thing and start again from scratch.

New director/new cast (Tobey Maguire & Kirsten Dunst are gone - Maguire quit without Raimi, and no-one probably bothered to tell Dunst)/new vision - and it'll hit our cinema screens in June 2012.

James Vanderbilt, who wrote a script for Spider-Man 4 that Sam Raimi is actually said to have "hated" - is credited as the writer of the new reboot, probably changing around his original draft to fit in with Sony's idea of a new series.

A series by the way, which will find Peter Parker once again in high school!

Oh yes - they are going there again.

The popular rumour tonight is that it'll be ...

"It's all happening right now. It's all sort of coming together. It's very exciting to me. I think the evolution of the character is really exciting, to be rooted in the history of what we've done already and to have a continuity, yet have a progression or evolution."
What do I take from Tobey Maguire's comments to The Hollywood Reporter late last week regarding the much talked about production troubles on Spider-Man 4, which has kept the movie grounded for the past month and has meant it's May 2011 release date has been sacrificed to Thor?

I say it means he's on board, committed to the big paycheck role - even if his close friend and series director Sam Raimi bails, as I have expected for a few month now.

Can you blame Maguire? Multiple millions of dollars to put on the costume again, a figure which probably increases with each and every movie? He won't care if the script ain't all there, or who is behind the camera telling him where to stand, etc.

Gotta love the Hollywood business - there's barely any other industry that is so bloody-thirsty and opportunistic.

Just a day after the full extent of Spider-Man 4's problems truly became evident and Marvel Entertainment have moved up Thor by two weeks to the May 5th 2011 slot that Sony had owned for over 18 months.

Thor is now the first franchise out of the blocks next summer.

Disney have also moved fast to slot Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides in where Thor used to reside, on May 20th 2011.

Disney had been looking for the right 2011 date for months and should thank Sony for the bang-up job they have made of Spidey 4's pre-production, which has saved Disney from trying out a trickier June/July date for POTC 4.

Where does this leave Spider-Man 4, if by some miracle Alvin Sargent's hastily written script manages to please both Sony and director Sam Raimi, and it actually films in the first half of this year?

Here's the rest of the 2011 Summer release schedule...
May 6th - Thor, Spider-Man 4 (this one is obviously going to move now)

May 13th/14th - FREE - though it is very close to the first big tentpole of the year ...

Spider-Man 4 has some huge hurdles to jump before it's anywhere near close to filming, that's the situation we are in right now. Thankfully, Sam Raimi has learnt his lesson and won't film a page of any script he isn't completely satisfied with. That at least we can guarantee.

A breaking news article from Nikki Finke tonight claims that Raimi "hated" all previous drafts for Spider-Man 4 turned in by Gary Ross, David-Lindsay Abaire and James Vanderbilt - and in an attempt to appease their director and get the movie filming as quickly as possible, producer Laura Ziskin has quickly turned to her husband Alvin Sargant, co-screenwriter of Spidey's 2 and 3 - to put together a Sony/Raimi friendly script.

Of course as we know, what further complicates matters is Raimi adamant's desire to stick on The Vulture as the main villain with John Malkovich playing him and Sony themselves hate that idea - so one doesn't see how a compromise script can be possible that pleases both parties.

And as Sony will make another Spider-Man movie no matter what, it's almost inevitable that Raimi has to bail.

I wrote on 18.12.09 that Sony had forced Spider-Man 4 to go on "holiday hiatus", effectively ...

We are back to late 05/early 06.

Sam Raimi has his villain for Spider-Man 4, the same bad guy he originally wanted to go with for Spider-Man 3 - The Vulture - who would have broke out of prison with Flint Marko (Sandman), and acted as the more evil of the pair in a fight against Spider-Man.

He's got an actor to play him... John Malkovich (last time round it was Sir. Ben Kingsley).

But once again Sony, just like they did some years ago, just aren't sure and have reportedly been diagnosed with last minute cold feet. My spidey senses are tingling!

From a studio exec point of view, I can sympathise somewhat.

An aging, kind of pathetic, bald, 56 year old villain in a big green costume, with feathers and who can fly but doesn't look cool and hasn't sold a Spidey book in years AND certainly isn't hip for a generation who have grown up with the Spidey movies, the 90's Spider-Man animated cartoon and video games - is the last character you would want to be the main villain for your studio's biggest franchise.

If we are talking business, and you have to remember that this industry is first and foremost about ...

Sam Raimi now has full creative control over Spider-Man 4, so most, if not all major decisions are his. That wasn't the case with the last movie where Raimi lost an awful lot of pre-shooting battles but it's certainly the case here, just so you know who is responsible.

Movieline carry the exclusive Spidey 4 scoop from that esteemed Oscar nominated actor John Malkovich is now favourite to play Adrian Toomes, a former electronics engineer who employs a special harness of his own design that allows him to fly and endows him with enhanced strength.

He becomes a remorseless killer, dubbed The Vulture and will be the main villain of Spider-Man 4. The news is officially unconfirmed but we do know that Raimi likes Vulture, and Raimi likes Malkovich (the actor was down to the final few on the Green Goblin casting for the first movie), so it sounds legit to me.

Sir. Ben Kingsley was offered the same part in Spider-Man 3, before
Marvel yanked the character away from Raimi during the pre-production
stages.
The Vulture? Colour me disappointed. The Vulture isn't anyway close to being the most exciting villain of the Spider-Man franchise and unless he was used in the first ...

Anne Hathaway is a tremendous actress.

Oscar nominated last year for her brave and transparent performance in Rachel Getting Married, and the huge exposure her brief Oscar stint with Hugh Jackman helped her win two massive musical projects that are being written for her right now (Judy Garland biopic & a one with Jackman), leave her on the verge of mega A-list stardom, if she isn't already there.

But I tell you folks... she's a bad fit for Spider-Man 4. She doesn't need this gig at this stage of her career and Sony are barking up the wrong tree by allegedly approaching her a part in the movie, according to Nikki Finke.
Sometimes an incredible, top-notch actress can simply be
wrong for a part.

She's an amazing presence on screen. But hey, sometimes an actor just doesn't work in some environments. And that's the case here with the role of Black Cat and Spider-Man 4.

Hathaway won't be able to do the mainstream comic book shtick. She barely got through the parody blockbuster Get Smart with her career in tact and yeah she could pull it off physically, but it's different when you have to play that role for serious. Can you imagine if Audrey Hepburn ...

Two related stories hit the web yesterday at roughly the same time, both concerning the rapidly moving towards production Spider-Man 4.

First the truth bits...

27 year old British actress Romola Garai who played the older Saoirse Ronan part in Atonement has auditioned for an unspecified female lead role in the next web-slinging adventure of Peter Parker. The audition was taped, presumably as Raimi wasn't in town.

Immediately my mind turned to her as Black Cat but it could just as easy be a new possible love interest. Or if you look at her, could they possibly be contemplating re-casting Gwen Stacy?
Garai certainly has a bit of Gwen Stacy about her.
/film carry a link to The Observer where Garai reveals her audition...
"Love is at the root of everything good that has ever happened and will happen.” This phrase swam into focus as I moved up the escalator at Oxford Circus tube on Tuesday morning on my way to put myself “on tape” for a part in Spider-Man 4. This is the acting equivalent of the London Marathon in that it’s important to try your best as long as you understand that you aren’t going to win.
So onto the oddly coincided timing of a ...

...he won't become the slavering tongued half man/half mutant creature-villain The Lizard just yet.

That's according to actor Dylan Baker who got a call yesterday confirming he is IN for the May 2011 released fourth installment of the web-slinging saga but only as a "background player", similar to his previous supporting stints in Spider-Man 2 and 3.

An appearance as The Lizard will be a “co*ktease for another year".

Clearly the situation is very reminiscent of the Billy Dee Williams/Two-Face saga, as the big elephant in the room is whether Baker is a big enough name to bring in the masses (though surely Spidey himself is the draw here, just like the 007 series) but I guess as long as they keep casting Baker, there is hope they will follow through one day with his villainous turn.

I guess more likely is the troublesome "creature as villain idea" which most definitely didn't work with Venom in the last movie and by using Connors you would have to go down the "cliched experiment gone wrong" avenue again and the "well he's not really evil, the serum is making him insane" formula, ala Doc Ock. But we didn't get one of those plots in Spider-Man 3, ...

... if Bruce Campbell is cast as Quentin Beck, aka Mysterio; The Master of Illusion, either as a main villain or one of several in Spider-Man 4 then I think we can officially stop calling him the world's most famous B-movie actor. He will be the marquee name of one of the biggest movie franchises of all time - Van Damme and Seagal can't claim to be that.

According to Access Hollywood, Campbell claimed a January start for Spider-Man 4 and that he would have a "major part" this time around, leading to a revived speculation that he will turn "big boss" villainous for the fourth movie, once again to be directed by his good friend Sam Raimi.

I still say Raimi should go with Dr. Curt Connors and The Lizard for Spidey 4 but I'm definitely in favour of growing the role of Campbell who was the ring announcer who gave Spider-Man's name in the first movie, was the snotty usher in the sequel, and the embarrassing waiter in the third.

The idea I heard back in 2006 when it was speculated that he was to play a movie special effects guy who gets laid off from his job working on a movie ...

James Vanderbilt, the screenwriter of Zodiac and the guy who penned the first draft of Spider-Man 4 which begins production early Spring for a May 2011 release, has been "quietly" hired by Sony to pen the fifth and sixth installment in the web-slinging superhero series, say Variety.

Which is an interesting move as Sam Raimi wasn't 100% keen on his original script and two new scribes, David Lindsay-Abaire and Tobey Maguire's writer/director friend Gary Ross was brought on to make it more to the director's liking.

Just another sign that Sony are planning for life after Raimi perhaps - who surely will be done after 4 when he has the massive World of Warcraft series waiting in the wings for him.

My personal opinion is Vanderbilt's hiring for the fifth and sixth movie (which is likely to be similar to Kill Bill 1 and 2 in terms of really being one over-sized movie), is so it can get under way quickly whilst Tobey Maguire (currently hired to 5) and Kirsten Dunst (only attached currently to the fourth) will still be a reasonable age.

In terms of who the villains could be... I'm desperate to see Kraven's Last Hunt adapted for screen, and The Lizard was ...

"We're just coming up with who the villain's going to be now. We'll be shooting in New York again. Trust me, people will appreciate who we pick, because it'll be a big part of New York."

says Sony producer Todd Black to the New York Post, sending fanboys into a bit of a guessing game frenzy over who the villain could be for the next Spider-Man movie.

His comment is vague but I guess it rules out a few Spidey villains (or does it, I can't think of any that couldn't exist in New York?). I'm putting my money on The Lizard, I think it's about time we saw how Dr. Curt Connors transforms to his darker side, though I guess his story isn't all that different to Doc. Ock's in truth and we have been there before with Spider-Man 2. And is Dylan Baker a big enough name for Sony to give him the ball?

Seeing The Lizard crawl the sewers of New York works for me though, a completely animalistic villain who should have absolutely no sympathy when he's the monster. With every scene he should move further away from the warmth and humanity he showed as his human self.

Black also ...

I actually think Sam Raimi is a little further along in pre-production on SPIDER-MAN 4 than he lets on to IGN this weekend and I translate the "earliest stages" comment referring more to finalising the script elements they already have in place rather than just beginning work on writing a new movie.

They have a release date now, May 6th 2011... things are starting to get serious now for Spidey's fourth installment.

Raimi claims he is closing in on villain/villains, one of whom thanks to Nikki Finke we already know was offered to actor Mickey Rourke, who had to turn it down due to his commitment on IRON MAN 2. As we know Raimi has mentioned before he has wanted to include Morbius The Living Vampire in the franchise to add a supernatural element, so it's not too hard of a stretch to think Rourke's was offered that role, as the physical resemblance is strong.

Now it will be interesting to see if it was a case of that's the only actor Raimi wanted for that part and without him they have no character, or whether it will be offered elsewhere.

We should also take into consideration the progression of Dr. Curt Connors as played by ...

We are patient folk, are we not? Better to take your time, get the right creative team on board, make sure every fine detail of the movie is as good as it can be before bringing it out to the masses.

We've seen in the past what rushed productions have caused superhero films (X-MEN 3 is a prime example) and IRON MAN 2 next year, should keep us Marvel fans happy till 2011. And then, we've got THOR, CAPTAIN AMERICA... and of course a fourth movie in the SPIDER-MAN franchise.

Then THE AVENGERS in 2012, the expected year of release for BATMAN 3. What a year that could be for superhero movies, especially if a new SUPERMAN reboot gears up for release the year before or the year after that.

Marvel's new release schedule...
May 7th 2010 - IRON MAN 2 (no release change, filming begins on that imminently)

May 4th 2011 - SPIDER-MAN 4 (in conjunction with Sony).

June 17, 2011 - THOR (pushed back from July 16th 2010, which is no surprise given they don't have a THOR cast yet)

July 22nd, 2011 - THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA (pushed back from May 6th 2011)

May 4, 2012 - THE AVENGERS (pushed back from July 15th ...

UPDATED:

E! Entertainment have confirmed a February 14th scoop that Scarlett Johansson will play Black Widow, the soviet spy who has a good side in IRON MAN 2.

The role firmly sets her up for future movies, including THE AVENGERS in 2012.

Nikki Finke claims Johansson screen-tested for the role at the beginning of the year but lost out to Emily Blunt, but now Blunt is travelling with Jack Black's Gulliver, they went back to her and offered Johansson the part.

Physically she's not right, her acting style only suits love triangle drama's from what I've seen... it's kinda like asking Marilyn Monroe to play TOMB RAIDER.

Blunt was just right for the role... Johansson may be out of her depth here. When an actress like Eliza Dushku lobbied so hard for the role, I think Favreau dropped the ball on this one.

A further update, Variety adds that Rourke will be playing both Whiplash and Crymson Dynamo, some kind of mixing of two villains.

END OF UPDATE...

"A significant" higher offer from Marvel than the $250,000 that was originally put on the table has secured the signature of Mickey Rourke for IRON MAN 2 according to Nikki Finke.

Holding out for a better deal, just as Samuel L. Jackson ...

New writers being hired for big budget movies in Hollywood are nothing new, in fact it's the expected working practice. It's actually a rarity that a screenplay gets crafted by one single writer all the way through it's production, especially in regards to comic book movies.

Which is why you shouldn't panic to hear that SPIDER-MAN 4 has got a new writer to replace James Vanderbilt (ZODIAC). Only after the fourth or fifth new writer (i.e. HANCOCK) has jumped on board, should we then start to panic...

The Hollywood Reporter say Pulitzer winning Playwright (for his 2007 play Rabbit Hole) David Lindsay-Abaire is now in charge of writing duties. He is known for his character driven plays and characters living on the outskirts of society (perfect!) and has credit on the animated movie ROBOTS and the upcoming INKHEART.

The hiring mirrors the kind of writer they used earlier in the series when dramatic screenwriter Alvin Sargent and Pulitzer prize winning author Michael Chabon wrote SPIDEY 2 and churned out the best film of the series.

The trades once again say Sam Raimi, Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst will all return.

Out promoting her new movie HOW TO LOSE FRIENDS AND ALIENATE PEOPLE, actress Kirsten Dunst has revealed to MTV that she's "in" for Sony's SPIDER-MAN 4, reprising her role of Mary Jane Watson.

But she then follows up with “I’m not saying anything, I know there’s rumors…”, which cryptically either means she has signed on for the new film but quickly realised that she can't say anything or she wants to be in the new movie and is using the press to get her name out there.

Back in 2004, if Dunst wasn't contracted to a SPIDER-MAN 3, she might have turned down the opportunity to return. I think she believed she was beginning to start a career away from the character of Mary Jane after major leading roles in ELIZABETHTOWN and MARIE ANTONITTE but when both movies flopped, she has since found those kind of parts hard to come by.

Four years later, with little leading roles on the horizon, I don't think she can afford NOT to put her name in the ring for the fourth movie.

Currently, only Sam Raimi & Tobey Maguire are on board for a fourth movie (which may be shot back to back with SPIDEY 5) from ...

Nikki Finke at her Deadline Hollywood Daily blog claims that Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi have both signed on to return for another Spider-Man movie, despite claims that both were ready to quit the successful and profitable franchise.

She also claims that previous reports of Spider-Man 4 and 5 being shot back-to-back are absolutely correct.

Kirsten Dunst has yet to agree on a return, though Finke believes the Mary Jane Watson character won't be re-cast if she declines the offer. Presumably the storyline involving Gwen Stacy will be progressed in the two movies, with or without Mary Jane.

Earlier this year, Zodiac scribe James Vanderbilt handed in the script for Spider-Man 4 which Finke believes will begin production next fall for a May 2011 release.

She also hints that Dr. Curt Connors will transform into The Lizard and will be the main villain of the next film, something that I think everyone agrees is the logical choice for the next film.

If this news is true, then we can expect some big movement on the Spider-Man franchise at the end of 2008/beginning of 2009.

Laura Zisken, the producer of the Spidey movies at Columbia/Sony has told theatre owners in California and Nevada that a fourth movie in the series is hoped to be released in May 2011.

She also confirms that James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) has yet to turn his script in, the part of the proccess that will be vital in keeping both director Sam Raimi and stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. If the script is below par or is disagerable with them, then that's it for those three... they no longer have any committments with the franchise.

The Spider-Man series has made over $2.5 billion worldwide and is the most success modern day cinematic franchise. With or without those trio, Spider-Man will be continuing for a very long time indeed. It is the new James Bond franchise of films.
