Warner Bros. took a risk allowing the Wachowski's to go with a weird looking, candy filled live action adaptation of a Japanese cartoon because the truth is it really did alienate the massive fanbase the guys had built up with The Matrix series, putting them on the anticipation level with fanboys as a Peter Jackson or a Guillermo del Toro. It ended up that Speed Racer only attracted those who were fond of the series or with kids who liked pretty colors.

For everyone else, there was truly nothing to see. It would have to be something majorly uninteresting for me NOT to see a Wachowski movie and remarkably they pulled it off. And I'm not the only one thinking that. $20 million opening... $5 million under what WB's lowest possible projection was (they couldn't even begin to contemplate something below that) and WELL short of it's $120 million budget.

Not...good...enough.

A 35% rotten rating on RT, a average at best 6.5 score ...

Ok, so I didn't really wanna do this as a Daily Vid but it's nearly 1am here in the U.K. and I'm dead on my feet. Really need some sleep (I have to leave the house at 7.30am... AND have time to update tomorrow's posts) so I don't have time to search for something better... and I was going to post this anyway.

You forgive me right?

So here it is... Speed Racer is upon us. This is the last chance for Warner Bros. to impress us and win our cash for what some have been speculating for the last week will be a big flop. I agree it's a tough sell..

See the tracks wider HERE.
Looks like the product of too many late night drunken ideas from all those involved. Have they seriously made a film that looks like a fisher price advert?
You can see Speed Racer from Friday worldwide.
DAILY VID - A brand new feature where we showcase one video I have found cool, humorous, insightful, interesting or all of the above!

If you have any suggestions for the feature then e-mail us directly at editor @ obsessedwithfilm.com (remove the spaces).source - coming soon

The seventies cartoon SPEED RACER did not burn rubber in the imaginations of an entire generation of young boys due to its gorgeous animation, deep characterization, or labyrinthine plotting. The cartoon succeeded because of THE CAR.

Yes, the Mach Five was the dream car for boys all around the world. Our minds reeled at the possibilities afforded us in the hum-drum world if we were behind the wheel of that extraordinary vehicle. That simple device was the chassis upon which was built a very successful - though not successfully animated - cartoon classic.

And it's the one thing the Wachowski's forgot in this completely stillborn remake.

The Wachowski's insisted from the beginning that they wanted to keep the "children's show" aspect of the cartoon intact; this was going to be a kid's movie, not an adult version of the show. Great. ...

[rating: 4]

Here he comes, here comes Speed Racer, he’s a demon on wheels... Born as a manga series in the 60s, and then adapted for television in the much loved and oft-repeated anime series, kidults everywhere will be glad to know that Speed Racer is well and truly back. This time Speed and the gang have been resurrected by sci-fi gods the Wachowski Brothers, who write and direct the first ever live action version: bringing the joys of technicoloured automobiles and Japanimation to a whole new generation.

The Racer family, if you hadn't guessed already, enjoy their cars. Eldest son Rex (Scott Porter) was destined to become one history's great drivers, but left the Racer Motors Team to compete for rival teams on the WRL (World Racing League) circuit. With his career mired in controversy and scandal, Rex dies mysteriously ...

Will there be midnight showings, street long cues and fanboys getting so very over excited when Star Wars: The Clone Wars opens in August?

We might have a better idea in May when the trailer plays for the first time along with showings of the Wachowski's Speed Racer.

The news comes from Coming Soon who also give us this brief preview...
The August 15 release will feature such characters as Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Padmé Amidala, along with brand-new heroes like Anakin's padawan learner, Ahsoka. In the film, Sinister villains – led by Palpatine, Count Dooku and General Grievous – are poised to rule the galaxy. Stakes are high, and the fate of the "Star Wars" universe rests in the hands of the daring Jedi Knights. Their exploits lead to the action-packed battles and astonishing new revelations.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars is actually a brand new CGI series to be shown on the Cartoon Network beginning in the fall (October we think) but in August, George Lucas will make an obscene amount of money by simply rolling out several episodes back-to-back to make a feature film.

And of course we will more than likely all put down our money to see it. Well ...

After the Wachowski Siblings released the first trailers for their upcoming live action version of the seventies cartoon classic Speed Racer, many movie fanboys spent far too many hours bashing the kaleidescopic visuals. Nevermind that most of these fanboys were yet to make an appearance as anything other than watery ejaculate when the cartoon was at its peak.

I, on the other hand, was a five year old boy during this time - thank goodness Logan's Run never came true! - and I know as well as anyone what made the cartoon work: THE CAR, THE CAR, THE CAR.

The characters were basically non-existent, the animation barely moved, and very little of the weekly story made any sort of sense. Yet, that damned car fueled the imaginations of an entire generation of boys in America. "What could you do if you had Speed Racer's Mach Five?" we would ask ourselves. The answer was, as always, "anything we damn well pleased."

And yeah, we used the word "damn" at five years old. When Mom wasn't around, that is.

As a long-term/ancient fan of the cartoon, I was filled with apprehension after watching the trailers. It seemed to me that the Wachowski Siblings spent too much ...

I think since the very first day that it was announced the Wachowki's were adapting the Japanese anime cartoon Speed Racer, I've kinda known it wasn't going to be for me.

Sure I like The Matrix. I even enjoy many parts of the sequels (though I do wish they never existed). Bound is the sexiest film noir of 90's, a genre I love to bits.

But this time the Wachowski's have made something that I'm not going to enjoy. I can see the appeal for kids and I can imagine being seven years old and just devouring this visual eye candy. It's the first movie I've seen that looks like a virtual reality video game and a movie all in one.

But this one ain't gonna be for me, and that's about as polite as I can get. This one opens March 9th (U.S.) and then a week later in the U.K..
