... are actually of the stunt double but I'm so unaware of 30 year old Taiwanese pop “mega star" Jay Chou, the guy actually filling the shoes of Bruce Lee, that I didn't even notice when I first glanced through Superhero Hype.

I'm getting some bizare Oddjob vibes from the image, like he should be the second or third tier villain in a 60's Bond movie. But then again, it's only the stunt double so as long as the outfit and basic shape is correct that's all that matters. I mean a stunt double's face is supposed to be nondescript anyway. The close-ups will be of Chou (who must be at least 15 years younger than this guy) and maybe he won't look so mean?

There's also our first look at lead Seth Rogen (as Britt Reid, aka The Green Hornet), and Cameron Diaz (the love interest/amateur sleuth).

Is it just me or the slimmer Rogen gets, the more plain he looks - therefore he kind of looks less like a leading man? When he was slimmer the first time around (see his part in The 40 Year Old Virgin), he had the same problem. I still think the movie would have worked with him fatter, especially ...

Last week's 5 month release date delay of The Green Hornet hasn't affected the start date for filming, as principal photography has begun this week on the Columbia Pictures adaptation of the old 60's crime fighting superhero show.

Thankfully for those already getting out the knives from the drawer and giving this movie a premature death, the delay was only to give the guys a longer time on post, to make sure that by the time it rolls out in December 2010, the movie looks like a billion dollars.

Rogen last week told Hitfix that he and co-writer Evan Goldberg were delighted when Columbia agreed to the delay...
"We're both relieved and psyched about the change. It gives more time for post, which would have been immensely rushed if we were to come out in the summer. It also affords us more time to promote the film, (now we can go to Comic-Con with more than a car!) and ultimately is a great vote of confidence from the studio. We got the same date that movies like 'I Am Legend' and 'Avatar' are getting, so we're thrilled to be there."
With casting nearing completion, I thought it was time to look a the main ...

Using his hard-earned comic credentials to direct a passion project, Judd Apatow's third written and directed effort Funny People, starring his old best friend and roommate Adam Sandler, is in many respects, exactly the story his filmography demanded from him at this point in time. It's a grown up effort. The third entry in a trilogy of "man-childs" movies after The 40 Year Old Virgin (first time having sex), Knocked Up (pregnancy) and now the life cycle is complete with a look into one's mortality, and a reflection of your journey up too that point and what you do if you had a section chance at life.

Hold on, is that a comedy I've just described. Well yes, Funny People is funny... at times. But dramatic too, even more so than the previous two in his canon.

It's also overtly too long, its running time would rival Magnolia - without the depth of content. Indeed some scenes go nowhere in particular, only present because Apatow’s love for his precious material is so apparent. However, it does not mean the audience will be so enamoured. The use of cameo appearances all feels rather needless (with the exception of Andy Dick, who comes out with the ...

Columbia Pictures have finally found a replacement for Stephen Chow, announcing today that 30 year old Taiwanese "mega star" Jay Chou will fill the shoes of Bruce Lee as the iconic sidekick Kato in The Green Hornet.

After an extensive talent search which has taken up most of this year, director Michel Gondry claims it was the chemistry between Chou and co-writer/lead Seth Rogen during the screentests that won the mega star the role over the competition, which is precisely how it should have been done.

I don't care that I haven't heard of him or know his work, in some ways I actually prefer it for this kind of iconic part.

Seemingly Chou is one of those guys who can do anything, releasing a million selling album every year for the past eight years, owning his own record company, directing films and music videos and even finding time to star in The Curse of the Golden Flower and a few other Asian flicks. Though he does curiously seem to be a singer more than an actor/or martial arts expert?

The Green Hornet is out next July, written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (Superbad) and starring Rogen, Jay Chou, Nicolas Cage (as the villain) ...

I'm not going to deal with my feelings on Adam Sandler's spotty movie career, since I just did that in this article for The Rec Show. If you'd like, you can check out my thoughts there.

I can respect comedies that tackle larger and deeper issues. A film like Tootsie dealt with complicated gender roles and adult romantic situations. Mr. Mom, although a pure comedy, had serious emotional character development. In these films and others, the comedy is always tinged - but not overwhelmed - by the drama.

This has been one of my major running complaints with the work of Judd Apatow. Although he has crafted some of the most memorable comedic moments of the last decade in films like The 40 Year Old Virgin and Superbad, his films also tend to run too long. He also tends to generously ladle on the pathos and emotion, which I find dilutes the comedy too much.

It's even worse in Funny People, Apatow's newest dramedy. This time, Apatow reworks a tired movie-of-the-week plot into an aimless vehicle for today's brightest comedians.

Adam Sandler plays George Simmons, a veteran stand-up comedian with an impressive array of movie hits to his name. When Simmons, discovers that he has a terminal ...

I love black comedies. One of my favorite comedies ever is Heathers, a film blacker than Whoopi Goldberg's asshole. They say comedy is hard, but black comedies are even more difficult. Their success relies intimately on a carefully maintained tone.

Tone is the big problem with the new Seth Rogen "comedy" OBSERVE AND REPORT. In it, Rogen plays Ronnie Barnhardt, a pudgy and lonely mall security guard who dreams of becoming a real police officer. When the pretty makeup counter girl (Anna Faris) is attacked by a serial flasher, Ronnie attempts to solve the problem, much to the dismay of police detective Harrison (Ray Liotta).

Ronnie might be one of the most unpleasant lead characters I have ever seen in a big budgeted feature film. He's racist, sexist, psychotic, and violent. Many reviews have compared him to Travis Bickle, Robert DeNiro's breakout character from TAXI DRIVER, but that comparison doesn't quite work here. TAXI DRIVER operated as a realistic and dramatic character study, while OBSERVE AND REPORT is playing like a comedy that appears to have little relation to the real world.

An example of this problem comes early in the film. The distressed makeup girl is brought into the security office to ...

You can spot a Michel Gondry movie from a mile away. The distorted reality, the timeless colour scheme, the energy and creativity that exists within every frame and it's that I hope he keeps when he makes the broad superhero comedy The Green Hornet with Superbad's Seth Rogen and writer Evan Goldberg.

Rogen, out promoting Observe & Report (a movie we hear may divide audiences on Rogen's on screen persona) has spoke to Collider about Gondry's wish not to be predictable for what is his first big mainstream movie...
“You know he really does not want to. Me and Evan have actually approached him with ideas like maybe we could do something like this…you could do some of your weird people made out of string and shit like that. He’s like, “No, I don’t want to any of that. The fact that you think I want to do that drives me crazy and makes me never want to do anything like that again.” He hates being predictable and repetitive and doing what’s been done before. As soon as he starts to feel like he’s expected to do something he doesn’t want to do it at all.”
Rogen also leaked that he hopes to start filming ...

Obsessed With Film have seen Seth Rogen's new movie OBSERVE & REPORT... but we are strictly tied to a reviews embargo and for a little while yet Mark Clark can't tell you what he thought of it.

Which sucks but I will see what I can weed out of him later, maybe a little hint at how he felt, rather than strictly a review.

In the mean time, Warner Bros. are beginning to promote the film across the U.S. and have debuted two new posters from the film, which pack their biggest punch when they are teamed together...

The reviews from the film's premiere at SXSW have compared it to BAD SANTA and even TAXI DRIVER if Travis Bickle was stuck in a comedy. All of them like the film, call it incredibly dark and crude and claim our whole perception of Seth Rogen might be about to change.
"Seth Rogen tests the limits of his lovable-lug persona in "Observe and Report," playing a character who is at best wildly delusional and at worst a stalker in need of professional care... The result gets plenty of laughs but will leave an odd aftertaste that could make "Observe" less successful than Rogen's less ambiguous outings". says ...

I'm once again excited for THE GREEN HORNET after last night's late announcement that Michel Gondry, possibly one of the more distinct and unique directorial voices in Hollywood right now would be directing the big budget superhero action comedy at Columbia.

Fanboy anticipation had kind of gone south after hearing that KUNG FU HUSTLE and CJ7 director Stephen Chow had bailed out, the worry being that Columbia weren't willing to give someone with such a unique voice the chance to work on the picture.

Last night that was proven to be false with Gondry's new attachment as he is certainly no studio yes man. There's nothing forumalic about ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, THE SCIENCE OF SLEEP or BE KIND REWIND.

Seth Rogen this morning couldn't wait to talk to MTV about the exciting coup that he pulled off mostly on his own (he e-mailed the script to Gondry without the studio's permission), telling them it's "fucking crazy" what has gone on this week...
"I've actually been e-mailing with him for a really long time, because he was involved with the project a long time ago," he explained. "With the permission of nobody, I sent him our script ... to get his input ...

Awesome.

I just literally finished watching THE PINEAPPLE EXPRESS on Blu-Ray, a movie I much, much, much more enjoyed the second time around and I see Seth Rogen doing his best flying cat, superhero impression and I'm thinking... "damn, I sure hope GREEN HORNET gets made".

And well, low and behold, I log onto my macbook and I read that the wackjob that is Michel Gondry (ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, BE KIND REWIND) is now firmly attached to helm and the film is back on at Columbia.

Gondry, who I guess isn't as far out of left field as you might think, will direct the production later in the year.

Seth Rogen will star as the Hornet from a script he co-wrote with his SUPERBAD and PINEAPPLE EXPRESS partner Evan Goldberg. Even though he has dropped directing duties, Stephen Chow will hopefully still play Kato.

Gondry is a huge HORNET fan and back in the late 90's attempted to make a big screen adaptation with ROBOCOP screenwriter Edward Neumeier before it ultimately got shelved, just one of the many ill fated attempts at adapting this classic property.

Now ten years later, Gondry, with a massive reputation now in the industry, Gondry gets his chance at ...

Judd Apatow; you are the master of making me laugh uncontrollably and at the same time really feel that big sting, that big lump at the back of my throat.

And it really looks like FUNNY PEOPLE could be your best yet. There's a depth to it that far outreaches THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN and KNOCKED UP, both of which had lots more on their minds than the usual rom-com.

Universal have released a very long trailer for the film that stars Adam Sandler as a comedian who finds out he is dying and becomes close to the young comedian he has recently taken under his wing (Seth Rogen).

The usual Apatow cast supports, with an Aussie accented Eric Bana joining in this time.

Apatow really seems to have notched up the Hollywood sheen of the movie. Looks damn beautiful. It really works and you know how I know it works?

Because I'm excited for it and it stars Adam Sandler. So there ya go!

Thanks once again to First Showing for the heads-up and the awesome trailer link!

Will I be this teary eyed come July 31st, still unsure as to whether I am laughing or crying?

Not as eye catching or with that great hook/concept that those early trailers for THE PINEAPPLE EXPRESS carried but there's enough little pieces here to hint at a funny jigsaw when it all gets put together.

The movie is OBSERVE AND REPORT, written and directed by Jody Hill (THE FOOT FITST WAY) and stars Seth Rogen as a mall cop with a crush on Anna Faris.

The trailer isn't perfect. It's got some funny lines but then it's a LONG trailer, which flows by lots of what they deem to be funny dialogue, so one would expect that.

Otherwise it would be PAUL BLART: MALL COP, which thankfully this isn't.

OBSERVE AND REPORT opens April 10th 2009 (U.S.) with no U.K. date just yet.

Now that we know THE GREEN HORNET is definitely still on at Sony, we can get down to talking about casting.

The LA Times have a brief snippet claiming that Adam Sandler will be taking on “a brief but key role in the movie as a certain surprise superhero”.

Sandler and Seth Rogen co-star in Judd Apatow's next movie FUNNY PEOPLE, due out July 31st 2009 and probably cooked up the idea on the set of that movie.

Am I right in remembering that GREEN HORNET'S Britt Reid is related to THE LONE RANGER?

Automatically you think he will cameo as the RANGER but then you remember Disney own the rights to that series and are pushing forward with a big movie adaptation, probably with George Clooney and Johnny Depp and wouldn't like the piss taken out of the character over at another studio. But if it's not THE LONE RANGER, who can it be?

Seth Rogen has responded to reports that Sony/Columbia had pulled the plug on THE GREEN HORNET, which he has co-written with Evan Goldberg and is set to lead.

He tells Hitfix, who was the source of the original news...
"'The Green Hornet' has many people working for it, including production designers, costume designers and many conceptual artists, office staff, etc.," he said during our e-mail exchange back and forth. "[The studio heads] have every intention on making it, and assuming we're able to hire a new director in the upcoming weeks, which seems like a distinct possibilty, it should still hit the release date."
AICN also seem to believe that Stephen Chow has only left directing duties and is still involved as an actor, playing the sidekick Kato.

Which is great news because I know Rogen has put an awful lot of passion into this project. Hell he's really done a great job dropping the weight and the odd combination of Chow and the guys who wrote SUPERBAD just seems like it will wackily work.

So, who now to direct? I would have gone with Edgar Wright but he's busy right now... wouldn't mind seeing David Gordon Green (THE PINEAPPLE EXPRESS) work with Seth Rogen ...

Problems, problems, problems at Sony over THE GREEN HORNET.

Ever since Stephen Chow left directing duties on the project, the movie has seemingly stalled at the studio and now comes word from Drew McWeeny over at HitFix that a close studio source claims that it is "highly unlikely" that the film will shoot in 2009 at all.

And unless a small miracle occurs, it's probably dead in the water.

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, I will congratulate you both. You guys got closer than most including Kevin Smith who has so desperate to make this movie a few years back but well if the studio's heart isn't in, then there's not a lot you can do.

Another huge story hit Variety last week which you probably won't have missed. Stephen Chow has dropped the directing duties on THE GREEN HORNET and is maybe having second thoughts about actually co-starring in the movie as Kato, the loyal sidekick to Seth Rogen's Green Hornet.

I don't know for sure but I would speculate it's a creative problem between the freedom Chow has been used to working in Asia compared to the Hollywood restrictions of Columbia and probably a conflict over what he wants and what SUPERBAD writers Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen want.

Chow told The Associated Press...
"If I direct 'The Green Hornet,' the superhero comedy will have to be delayed for two years," Chow said. "The timing might not be right for a superhero comedy in two years. And I want to make a movie based on an original idea."
Can't really see Columbia Pictures waiting on this project for Chow. Even though he has shown terrific acting and directing chops with SHAOLIN SOCCER, CJ7 and KUNG FU HUSTLE, I can't help but feel that Rogen is their star and having spent the past few months slimming down for the role and getting into the shape of his life, it ...

Whenever someone criticises Kevin Smith's direction in his movies, or lack there of it, Smith usually comes back with the defence that he is a way better writer than he is director. Or that he is a filmmaker and not a "director" per say, in so much that yes he tells stories on film but the depth is in the dialogue and tone rather than anything he does with movement or direction. And in the sincerest and nicest possibly way, I've always agreed with that.

Putting aside all the F***, C*** and S***'s., the bottom of the barrel and vulgar foul language in almost every scene of his films, when he is at his best there is a real story bubbling away at the core. For many, it fully came to the surface with his 1997 movie CHASING AMY and now with his latest movie ZACK AND MIRI MAKE PORNO, he has returned to the friendship vs. sexual politics theme and his solid writing and characterisation really makes it work again.

Maybe it's something to do with the economically scary state the world is in right now but you just simply can't help but relate to the down on their luck ...

A much slimmer Seth Rogen, losing the weight fast for his role as the action/hero THE GREEN HORNET, features in the poster for the third directed movie from Judd Apatow (THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN, KNOCKED UP), the semi-autobiographical FUNNY PEOPLE.

The Universal Pictures comedy/drama which is only a few weeks into filming finds Adam Sandler as a seasoned stand-up comedian who is diagnosed as being terminally ill. His desire to form a true friendship, see's him take a very green performer (Rogen) under his wing.

It promises to be sweet, sad, uplifting and funny with a true moral message. Just like every Apatow film then!

Co-starring are the usual Apatow crew, his real life wife Leslie Mann and Jonah Hill, along with two newcomers to the universe, Eric Bana and Jason Schwartzman.

One wonders why they are getting the promotion out this early for the film, I didn't expect to see anything until at least February. Especially during filming! Wonder how much dropping the weight changes Rogen's attitude and whether it effects his humor!

I'm struggling to work out what is actually new in this trailer for ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO but I have to post about it, I loved CLERKS II... a huge step up for Kevin Smith in terms of direction, themes and just the overall visual look of his films.

And this looks to be the same and has some real weight it. Elizabeth Banks and Seth Rogen, two of the funniest actors around right now whose naturalistic style should suit Smith's dialogue down to the ground and make for a very likeable and enjoyable film.

The movie opens in the U.S. a week tomorrow (Nov. 14th in the U.K.) and it should make up for the lack of comedy on our screens this year (after TROPIC THUNDER and FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL.. has their been much else?). Trailer is below, see if you can spot what's new...

See it in HD at Myspace!

Thankfully, the trailer keeps the word "PORNO". With this and the R-Rating for SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE... just what is up with the world right now?

I usually don't like taking actors comments out of context but it's pretty clear to anyone reading Seth Rogen's interview over at Collider today that he is more than just a little skeptical over a proposed GHOSTBUSTERS 3.

And without Rogen's backing, your losing a massive name because it's clear Judd Apatow and Harold Ramis were banking on him probably being at the forefront of the new generation of Ghostbusters.

“It’s hard to imagine that would be good, isn’t it?” asks Rogen. “I mean just as a movie fan I am the first guy to be skeptical of that. It sounds like a terrible idea when you first hear it. At first hearing it sounds like the worst idea ever. I dunno. Maybe. I mean, that would have to be one mutherfucking good script.”
Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, two writers on The Office are writing GHOSTBUSTERS 3 right now and under tremendous pressure to deliver a movie that is appealing not just to the original GB crew but also the new actors who will take the mantle in the next movie.

Can a script that suits all parties even be possible?
