There's a Spanish movie by the name of TIMECRIMES playing at the Sundance Film Festival this weekend which has caught the eye of Tom Cruise who has just secured a deal for the American remake rights to the feature for his United Artists studio.

Written and directed by Nacho Vigalondo, the movie follows a guy whose time machine travels him back in time nearly an hour and the disasters that occur because of it. The original movie is said to be in the tone of Phillip K. Dick and it could be a project that might suit the Cruise-meister who of course starred in a real Dick adaptation with Spielberg's MINORITY REPORT.

This movie sounds really cool and the original was made for such a low budget that a Hollywood remake with some money behind it can't be something to get pissed about. I even like the look of the INVISIBLE MAN like villain even if it does look kinda corny.

No word if Cruise will go after Nacho to direct the mainstream remake or if the director himself would be interested in re-doing the story. I can't see why he wouldn't because it's gigs like this that can get you into Hollywood ...

It's 1-18-08 which means that CLOVERFIELD must have been released and that brand new STAR TREK teaser trailer will be playing all around the U.S. right now.

I seriously have never in my lifetime seen as much hype for a STAR TREK movie ever (I wasn't around in 79 when the first movie hit).

Where the hell were all these people when STAR TREK: NEMESIS was released six years ago? Where have all these new Trekkies come from, has this Lost creator and the director of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE III really turned so many people back onto TREK?

Or is it the characters of Kirk, McCoy, Scotty and Spock returning that is getting everyone worked up?

That pretty epic teaser trailer has been bootlegged online and you can see it below. What I loved most of all? Those sounds at the end? Haunting and nostalgic... loved it. I can't wait to see a darker TREK which I think is what we most certainly will get this Christmas.

New Line are desperate to avoid another fantasy disaster after what happened with THE GOLDEN COMPASS this December and really can you blame them? Pumping over $200 million into a project and in return only seeing around a quarter of that back (doesn't matter how well it does worldwide, they sold that cash-cow to finance the film in the first place) soon makes you very anxious about your future projects which exist in the same genre.

Their next big fantasy flick is INKHEART, the Brendan Fraser family friendly movie which Variety say has been pushed back from a first quarter 2008 release, to a January 09 opening.

The main factor given out by New Line is that the writers strike made it difficult to adequately market the picture on the advertising spots on first run shows.

I can't help but feel that there's another problem here behind the scenes because that's one hell of a delay, over six months... and just because of advertising? No way do we believe that.

They got cold feet here. They spent $60 million on this franchise to be led by Brendan Fraser, someone who hasn't been in a big film for years and they can't afford for this ...

The STAR TREK movie is still under construction, as is the new Enterprise as promoted in the new trailer attached to CLOVERFIELD and the first official TREK still released today on Moviefone.

It looks big, kinda epic and a nice blend of the old design and a new cool and sleak look.

I like this tease. I wanna see more...

I really like the cast that J.J. Abrams has put together for STAR TREK (exceptions possibly being Pegg & Pine) and I think the castings of Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana and John Cho were right on the nose for the type of actor and personality they needed for this flick.

And I love these photo's. Abrams took some of his cast along with him to a premiere of CLOVERFIELD last night and as they are filming TREK right now, they all had their look and haircuts from the film. I'm finally starting to see Pine as Kirk, John Cho looks good as Sulu and Jesus, is Karl Urban goofy as hell as McCoy.

Urban as McCoy is just genius casting.

Images of the TREK crew, new poster image and interviews below.

LOTS MORE IMAGES OF THE CAST OF STAR TREK (and Lindsay Lohan who decided to attend the premiere) CAN BE FOUND AT IESB.

The IESB also have video interviews with the crew of TREK. You can see all of those HERE but the text form highlights are below...

In an interesting article published just a few hours ago in USA Today, Chris Carter the creator of the extremely popular X-Files show claims that the new movie currently well into production will indeed be a stand-alone flick (with no ties to any ongoing storylines) but actually goes one further and says they have dropped the "conspiracy mythology" of the original show.

Just what the hell does that mean? I will let you ponder that whilst you look over our first glimpse of Mulder and Scully back together and we will try and answer the mystery below.

Just what do they mean when they say "dump" the "mythology"?

Carter speaks as if the Alien invasion has been dropped and indeed that the film will feature no Aliens and no ties to the show or the 1998 movie. Excuse me if I'm being ignorant here but then what the hell is the point in doing an X-FILES movie that's not an X-FILES movie?

Anyone got a theory on this? I'm sure the truth must be out there...

This Friday, the teaser trailer for STAR TREK will be attached to all screenings of CLOVERFIELD in the U.S. and it will be online for the rest of us (legally) on Monday.

As expected, reports are starting to trickle in from those who have seen it. If you don't want to be spoiled over the contents of the trailer then don't click below.

From Slash Film via HollywoodChicago Message Boards (this has been confirmed to be legit)...
Paramount logo. Bad Robot logo. Black, suddenly some sparks (very saturated, Michael Bay looking cinematography) We hear an old NASA radio countdown: “30 sec and counting.” Close up of a timeless guy with goggles leaning down doing some weilding and sparks flying around. He lifts his googles — slightly futuristic head covering. It’s not a space suit, btw. The dude leans down and wields some more — he’s standing on big metal. “FROM DIRECTOR J.J. ABRAMS” (blue font with a nice lens flare)

Some Kennedy speech about space flight: “The eyes of the world now look to space.” People walking around the saucer section. The wielders are everywhere, showing size. We hear, “The Eagle has landed.” Huge overhead shot pans across, suddenly showing what looks like miles ...

The Hollywood Reporter carry the news that the first meeting of Klaatu with a human being in THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL will be with a 8 year old kid played by Jaden Smith, the son of Will.
I very much doubt that Smith will be 'like father, like son' in the scene but hey, any chance to upload one of my favourite parts of INDEPENDENCE DAY will always be taken by me.
Scott Derrickson (THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE) will direct the sci-fi remake of the classic 50's movie, with Keanu Reeves (as Klaatu), Jennifer Connelly (scientist Helen Benson), Kathy Bates and Jon Hamm.
The film is currently shooting out in Vancouver.

I've just stumbled across Harry Knowles' amazingly glowing review of CLOVERFIELD over at AICN, possibly the best review I have ever seen Harry give to a movie. Even more so than the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy.

Now Harry is known to get himself a little too excited over movies from time to time and we have to remember that he LOVES his monsters and gave a similar kind of review for Roland Emmerich's GODZILLA remake a decade ago.

A movie which I think he was the only person on the planet who liked upon it's initial release.

Still we love the guy and if he's right, we are in for a really special treat when this opens soon...
"Utterly Brilliant".

"CLOVERFIELD is a bold genre-reinvention unlike anything we’ve ever seen before".

"Like SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, but instead of Nazis it’s a giant monster".

"There’s no score, there’s no rules, there feels like there’s no script and no movie. It feels found, but it is so huge that you can’t ever really believe that… but handheld film just has never had a story of something this fantastical or huge happen. The movie is a landmark genre film. A true milestone in film".
The big monster movie opens next ...

A small but interesting tidbit on James Cameron's AVATAR picture.

Apparently the fictional planet and off-world colony of Pandora depicted in the sci-fi film will be based upon the real-life drilling rig of Noble Cycle-Bordeaux, situated in the Gulf of Mexico.

Cameron, who is notorious for his unmatched research and preparation visited the rig along with his production company Lightstorm Entertainment to see the inner workings and specifically the living quarters and the mechanical systems present.

They took over 700 photo's in all and was seen as a valuable exercise in the preparation of the film. The movie will mix the blend of live-action photography and new photorealistic production techniques but the most believable sets are based on real life environments.

Ron Howard, who once ventured to the moon with Tom Hanks in APOLLO 13... is eyeing a return to space according to Sci-Fi Wire. Howard is said to be in discussions for the film rights to science fiction author E.E. "Doc" Smith's "Lensman" series of novels, with the hope of securing an 18 month renewal option for Imagine Entertainment and Universal Pictures.

First published in the 1930s, the series is considered to be the first set of sci-fi novels actually conceived as part of a long running series and it's influence on the genre spread all across the 20th century canon of sci-fi books and films.

The books are often regarded as being the first "space opera's"...

The first book in the series is "Triplanetery", first serialized in the pages of "Amazing Stories" and if they doing the series in order, it will be the first movie shot.

Dark Horizons give us more...
The series spans millions of years, recounting the struggle between the good Arisians and the evil Eddorians. The books chronicle the rising role of humanity in the ultimate battle.

I recall Kevin Smith announcing this movie several years ago, in fact I think he may have announced the project in question, CLERKS 2 and THE GREEN HORNET all at once.

This particular movie carries the cumbersome title RANGER DANGER AND THE DANGER RANGERS and is Smith's pulpy homage to sci-fi serials and comic books.

Smith revealed to MTV that the film will likely be his tenth feature after he completes work on ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO and his "religious horror" film RED STATE.
“I think it would be kinda cool to go larger budget and shoot some effects on that one,” says Smith.
The director recently helmed the pilot episode for TV shoe REAPER and he's obviously come away from that feeling he was capable of moving onto more visually challenging stories.
“REAPER made me feel a bit more confident when it comes to effect shoots - not like I’m going out and seeking them, but when it comes to one like RANGER DANGER I [used to think] ‘maybe when I’m fifty I’ll be ready for it,’” Smith says. “But now I feel like, it’s easier to work through things.
“I maybe kind of feel like I maybe can approach RANGER DANGER, and not fuck it up completely.”

Speaking of CLOVERFIELD (see below this post), another reason to get excited for the monster movie is the teaser trailer for STAR TREK which will be attached to the picture. So if you venture out to see the monster you will be able to get the very first glance at the new Trek as early as the 18th of January.

Those who stay at home, will be able to see it in Quality HD on Monday 21st when it hits the web.

Or if it gets leaked sooner. But don't be fooled by this fan-made reel which has tricked several websites across the web... this is a FAKE! It's a tremendous fake but still a fake nevertheless.

Nimoy's voice-over is apparently from STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN and the music from the opening of STAR TREK VII: GENERATIONS. Still it's a cool way to waste a couple of minutes and you can't help but feel a twinge of excitement over it.

Can't wait to see the real thing.

In the U.S, the 2008 movie calendar will really kick into gear with CLOVERFIELD... the J.J. Abrams produced monster movie which came out of nowhere in the Summer, but then we couldn't distance ourselves from hearing about the god damn thing.

Will all the crazy hype, wild theories and months of talk, can it possibly meet our expectations?

Probably not but hey, nothing ever good comes out in January anyway (unless you live in the U.K. and you sometimes get last year's left overs) and it can't be any more of a let down than ALIENS VS. PREDATOR: REQUIEM, right?

And well, we will all have LOST season 4 to look forward to once CLOVERFIELD is out of the way. And then STAR TREK and then hopefully, I God damn promise I will be a good boy for the rest of my life, we will see him do THE DARK TOWER.

Abrams is a genius of marketing and feeding us tidbits of sci-fi canon. CLOVERFIELD just feels like the beginning to me.

MTV say that Arthur C. Clarke's 1953 novel Childhood's End is one of the best sci-fi works of the last century. I've never read it but I don't mind taking their word for it. After all, Clarke is the author who gave the world 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, a movie that predicted many false things but was adapted into one of Kubrick's very best films.

And if BOYS DON'T CRY helmer Kimberely Pierce gets her way, End will soon be added to the filmic canon of Clarke adapted works which surprisingly have been few and far between.

The word is that Pierce has got a draft for an adaptation and she is waiting to see if Universal want to go ahead with it. The stumbling block seems to be the minimum budget of $70 million which Pierce has set for the script and with Sci-Fi generally on the decline with the general public and replaced by comic book movies... it's not an easy sell.

The book is a complicated work to explain in just a few paragraphs (wiki plot summary is huge) but in short it's a futuristic novel where aliens have invaded Earth but instead of killing everyone they have helped prolong ...

The announcement back in May that TORQUE director Joseph Khan was set to helm a massive $70 million budgeted adaptation of William Gibson's sci-fi novel NEUROMANCER was met with much disdain and disappointment across the web.

The novel written in 1984 has something of a large cult following and is often said to have been a big influence on THE MATRIX but instead of The Wachowski's, Alex Proyas or hell, even Francis Lawrence... they are stuck with a music-video director who somehow landed this job...
Neuromancer tells the story of Case, an out-of-work computer hacker hired by a mysterious patron to participate in a seemingly impossible crime. The novel examines the concepts of artificial intelligence, virtual reality, genetic engineering, multinational corporations overpowering the traditional nation-state and cyberspace long before these ideas became fashionable in popular culture including the internet itself.
Now if you weren't a fan of the choice of director, I think you should probably look away now....

Joblo say that Hayden Christensen will lead the movie. That's the guy who 20th Century Fox are trying to convince us in the new Keanu Reeves with their promotion for next month's sci-fi movie JUMPER...

Reeves who of course was in THE MATRIX and also starred ...

After taking $333 million worldwide in just three weeks, a sequel to the Will Smith action vehicle I AM LEGEND is 100% inevitable. The apocalyptic blockbuster made Warner Brothers far too money for them to close the book on this world and with the audience feedback being rather positive, I would expect work to soon begin on a sequel.

An insider who wishes to remain anonymous has told Shock Till You Drop that the studio has reached a deal with the book's author Richard Matheson, allowing WB to come up with an original story for any future installments. Matheson never wrote a sequel to I AM LEGEND (for obvious reasons) and all the previous incarnations and adaptations have all been stand-alone.

The problem for WB is how do they make a sequel without their A-list star Will Smith, generally a figure who is perceived to have attracted the majority of the huge audience.

Well without some major screwed up plot device, Will Smith's Robert Neville surely won't be back for the sequel and the obvious avenue to go down would be to follow the small group of survivors, possibly going the DAWN OF THE DEAD route with an enclosed environment.

Of course, the question ...

One of my absolute most anticipated movies of 2008 is THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON, the 7th feature film from David Fincher and the third team-up with his regular star Brad Pitt. The movie is an adaptation of a F. Scott Fitzgerald short story where our lead starts aging backwards, which has disastrous consequences for his life, specifically his relationship with Cate Blanchett.

It's a project that has intrigued me greatly ever since Fincher signed up to it. I love these kind of 'what if' sci-fi tales and with Fincher's ZODIAC easily being one of the best movies of last year, I can't see how it can be anything other than great.

Now the movie doesn't open till November but world has leaked to Hollywood Elsewhere from a costume designer who is working on the film (she has worked with Steven Soderbergh and Michael Mann in the past so she isn't' easily star struck), who calls the work she has seen on the movie “one of the highlights of her career.”
"Top to bottom she said the set and production was a dream, that both David Fincher and Brad Pitt were consummate professionals, and that the script was top-notch -- the only ...

I've said it before but it's worth repeating. Audrey Niffenegger’s 2003 novel THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE is the absolute best book I've read in the last couple of years and despite a difficult to film narrative, it could make an awesome film.

And the casting here is just note perfect. Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana are the absolute best choices that they could have picked for the roles of Henry and Claire, the two lovers locked in a wacky and at times impossible relationship when one of them becomes diagnosed with chronic time travelling.

Look for this next year from the director of FLIGHTPLAN and just to warn you guys, it will play with your heartstrings just as much as THE NOTEBOOK did a few years back.
