It's already at least three films too long, and now Saw VI looks set to arrive in British screens on October 23rd to distinctly tepid reviews: the film-makers seemingl unperturbed by the embarrassing fact that the franchise can boast to include a theme-park ride that significantly outclasses the majority of its actual filmic instalments- at least it holds some actual thrills.

But for one glimmering moment, I was taken in by this gloriously clever little poster...

And then the sense that had deserted me came flooding back when I watched this attached teaser trailer- heavy on poor quality CGI, at least it doesnt give away as much plot detail as the first trailers did for anyone with even half a detective gene in them.

Saw 6 Teaser

I cant help but be a little suspicious of the tagline, and indeed of the official blurb I received claiming that Jigsaw's grand scheme will finally be explained- surely there have been ample opportunities (and actual attempts) to explain Jigsaw's Game, and the fifth instalment all but made a mockery of the idea that the Game was continuing in the same vein that John had originally intended. The authenticity was abandoned when it became obvious that there was ...

Release Date: 9th March 2009

So it seems we are going to have another SAW every year then…

There is a very definite pattern emerging in this franchise: as the numbers progress, the stars of the lead actors gleam slightly less. First off we had Cary Elwes and Danny Glover, then the talents of Donnie Wahlberg in 2005’s follow-up, and since then we have been treated to a veritable smorgasbord of B and C list (at very best) actors. This next development sees Costas Mandylors (brother of Louis who played Joey’s fake twin in FRIENDS) and Scott Patterson (Luke in the bile-inducing GILMORE GIRLS) add their considerable acting chops to the series. How long until the guy that got coffee for the guy that fluffed Elizabeth Berkley's body double on SHOWGIRLS gets his chance? At this rate I should be in SAW X.

But of course it isn’t the actors who are the real stars of the SAW franchise (apart from maybe Tobin Bell), it’s the inventive ways in which they are dispatched, and it has to be said the Pendulum trap, for which SAW V is now best known ranks as one of the best offerings so far. It’s the perfect cringe-inducing ...

If movie cycle history has taught us anything it's that its never a smart idea to promote your production designer to helm your latest. They may be able to dress a scene up smartly but does this really qualify them take over the reins of the entire production? Remember Joe Alves?

He went from Oscar winning glory on CLOSE ENCOUNTERS, to equally impressive production design work on JAWS, and later JAWS 2 to suddenly helming a severely rubbery sequel with the failed novelty trick that was JAWS 3D.

Following on from James Wan's solitary stint on the opening chapter, to Darren Lynn Bousman's deft assurance on the three sequels that followed, the SAW creators make the similar mistake of enlisting their own PD to do the dirty work on their fifth film. Anyway it is now up to the newly promoted David Hackl to stamp his print on the series and one has to be willing to give this guy a least a fleeting chance.

Unfortunately, as one would suspect, Hackl is more concerned with how his film looks on the outside rather than nurturing what goes on the inside: This is ultimately why SAW V remains a giddy experience and leaves you ...

SAW V opens Friday, once again attempting to scare us the week before Halloween. Obsessed With Film were delighted this week to have the chance to talk to Tobin Bell, the real star of the franchise...

Interview by Oliver Pfeiffer...

Contrary to popular belief Tobin Bell doesn’t speak in a muffled, gravely voice in person. He even has a general distain for most horror films. An ordinary looking character actor Bell spent most of his career in bit player parts in films as diverse as TOOTSIE (as an uncredited waiter), GOODFELLAS and THE FIRM and fleeting television appearances in everything form Nash Bridges, The X-Files, E.R. and 24.

But it was these unassuming fade-in-to-the-background looks which made him an inspirational choice for the surprise ‘man with the self- inflicted torture plan’ in the SAW series, as John Kramer (aka ‘Jigsaw’), a role that he will probably be best remembered. During a conference call with the reluctantly pegged ‘horror icon’ I took the opportunity to quiz the actor on his fearsome but faithful contribution to the continual series, any sneaking developments we may except to look out for in SAW V and whether he would one day be interested in directing his own installment ...

Costas Mandylor, an experienced character actor who has worked with the likes of Jack Nicholson and directors Sean Penn and Oliver Stone in his time, returns as supporting character Mark Hoffman, who had a small role in SAW III and IV but now continues his escapades in the fourth sequel in a more fleshed out and intricate role.

As well as talking to Tobin Bell, OWF's Oliver Pfeiffer was surprised and elated to have the opportunity to talk to Costas about this Friday's release SAW V and his career as a whole.

Your character like Tobin’s started off as a small role and then evolved in subsequent sequels. Did you have any idea your character would develop in this way?
People would hint to me that there was a possibility that this character could evolve but nothing to such a major extent that it did…and then suddenly this character is alive and becomes central.
Did you feel any fierce responsibility to essentially ‘carry the torch’ of John Kramer?
Yeah I felt a responsibility to carry the torch and to convey the true heart of this guy and to stay true to John’s character. Yeah it was a big responsibility to get it right.

What was it ...

Lionsgate are telling us we won't believe how Saw V ends.

As long as it's definitive and leaves no room for a Saw VI then I will be happy but of course that ain't gonna happen. Can anyone predict what "shocking" conclusion they could end on this time?

David Hackl, the second unit helmer on Saw III and IV will make his feature directorial debut on this one which will see Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) as what we think is the last person alive to continue on Jigsaw's legacy.

But of course, Saw is never straight forward. Tobin Bell, Scott Patterson and Shawnee Smith all return and joining the cast this time is Julie Benz. The movie opens October 24th.

Lionsgate have released two new official photo's from this Halloween's version of Saw over at Yahoo Movies, which if your still counting is a franchise up to five films now.

The first features Costas Mandylor checking out a possible model for a death trap and the second is of Scott Patterson already the unfortunate victim.

Julie Benz, Meagan Good, Shawnee Smith and somehow but of course unsuprisingly, Tobin Bell also star, for the movie due out on October 24th.

David Hackl, the second unit director of the last two Saw movies makes his directing debut on this one.

The last SAW movie, which I will admit I wasn't paying as much attention to as I probably should have been (I'm so sick of this damn franchise) confused me completely, so I'm a little lost with where this franchise is headed and just who has done what and to whom.

All I know is that I'm sick of having to talk about Saw year in, year out and I would be quite happy to see this series die to move over and allow a new horror tentpole to take it's slot.

In the fifth installment of the Saw franchise, Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) is seemingly the last person alive to carry on the Jigsaw legacy. But when his secret is threatened, Hoffman must go on the hunt to eliminate all loose ends. Tobin Bell, Julie Benz, Costas Mandylor, Scott Patterson and Mark Rolston star.
So are we seeing a full movie with the new killer wearing a Tobin Bell mask until the big "shock" reveal at the end?

Do we even care?

Saw V opens October 28th.

Here's a prediction...

Saw VII will be directed by the series costume designer and Saw VIII will be helmed by the coffee runner.

I mean that's what they are going to get down to soon because they are reluctant to give the Saw franchise to anyone outside of their close knit team who have worked on these pathetic films for the past five years.

Since Darren Lynn Bousmann announced his last Saw movie would be last year's fourth installment of the series the news soon came that the fifth movie due out this October would be directed by the series production designer and second unit helmer David Hackl... and now comes the news from Shock Till You Drop that Saw VI will be directed by the series editor Kevin Greutert as his directorial debut.

Has a big money franchise in the history of cinema ever worked in such a strange and incestuous manner?

While we are on the subject, Saw V will have the goriest opening scene ever in the series and some of the coolest and inventive traps according to it's director and producer. Don't they spout this same kind of message every year...
"Our opening is...it's something," smiles Hackl. "People turn away in the ...

Variety say Julie Benz (Rambo, Punisher 2) will topline this year's obligatory Saw movie (they are up to five now, by the way) for debut director David Hackl, who worked on the previous three movies as a production designer.

The script comes from the writers of Saw IV and for the first time since the original Saw, Darren Lynn Bousmann had nothing to do with this picture.

Production began March 17th and the film of course will be in cinema's this Halloween.

The last Saw I viewed in the cinema was Saw II... after that it became obvious that I was just going to be paying for the same movie year in and year out. I've hated the rest which I have caught up with on DVD, I doubt this one will be any different.

The fifth installment in the severely over-blown franchise should not see any delays now that Lionsgate have made a deal with the WGA, any problems that are wrong with the script can now be legally solved with a typewriter.

Saw V is expected to begin production in March, with the usual release on Halloween weekend. Bloody Disgusting have some of the first casting details for the movie which you can see after the jump but be warned their could be spoilers.

Despite his passing in SAW III and the autopsy he underwent in the last movie, Tobin Bell is expected to return once again as Jigsaw, the antagonist behind the latest set of traps and killings. After pushing the limits of having the movie's villain only appear on tape and in flashbacks in SAW IV, I think the idea of doing that again is a mistake.

Especially with the way SAW IV ended, they had setup the chance for a new Jigsaw villain who they really should now attempt to give the ball and run with it. Also expected to return are Scott Patterson as Agent Strahm and Costas Mandylor who has starred in the last two movies as Hoffman.

Now Lionsgate are getting really ambitious.

Just the other day we spoke of how the upcoming writer's strike was forcing them to push through their script for Saw V at lightning speed as that November 1st deadline approaches. If you thought that short window of time might have watered down the quality of the next film then what about this news...

Bloody Disgusting have learned "for a fact" that Saw V will be shot back-to-back with Saw VI, using the same crew (including rookie director David Hackl and the writers Marcus Dunston and Patrick Melton) and possibly skipping the annual October release date.

So this duo of writers now have a matter of weeks to write the script for the next two Saw installments!

Why would Lionsgate do this?

Well it would seem that shooting back-to-back would be extremely cost-effective and (this is me talking now) Lionsgate could be worried about not just the quality of this month's Saw IV but the quality of the upcoming movies with a rookie helmer directing.

Maybe they think Saw IV won't make the money they are hoping, so if they can shoot two movies quickly and for cheap then the expected box office drop won't effect them too much. ...

It would seem that the impending writers strike might have put a little kink in Lionsgate's annual money making plan for the Saw franchise. According to Darren Lynn Bousman they usually have a script completed by Christmas, with tweaks and re-writings occuring in the New Year before they go out and complete filming before the Summer.

Well of course, with the upcoming writer's strike... they may not this time have as long as Christmas to complete the script. Infact by the sounds of it, they only have till the end of the month.

David Hackl, the rookie director of Saw V spoke to Shock Till You Drop...

"We have about a week to write the outline, then the script by the end of the month. We're really just throwing down the ideas now and it's coming together quickly,"

Now I realise that none of the scripts for the Saw series (especially 2 and 3) have been Shakespeare but a couple of weeks is a really short time span to put a script together for anything.

Speaking as someone who is not a fan at all of the Saw series, it's become pretty evident to me that the franchise is getting worse with each film that ...

As usual, Lionsgate are already looking forward to their big 'Saw' paydays for the next couple of years. The news from Bloody Disgusting is that a director has been found for Saw V and Saw VI which at the moment is as far as they are looking ahead.

David Hackl is the guy. He was the second-unit director for two of the previous Saw flicks and has worked as production designer on the last three.

Of course, the time when one Saw movie flops (which will happen, eventually) will probably mark the end or at the very least a slow down in the franchise, so Hackl will be hoping Darren Lynn Bousman's last contribution to the series won't bomb this October.
