A study in Forbes makes a great case for one-note, high salary comedy actor Will Ferrell being Hollywood's most overpaid thesp after two years of underperforming hits and flops.

Their study suggests "for every dollar Ferrell was paid, his films earned an average $3.29" which compares to Shia LaBeouf's "$160 return per dollar"... though on that scale the study is slightly flawed as no-one saw Indy IV and Transformers 2 because LaBeouf was in it.
Land of the Lost is a movie that is at least
$35 million in the red for Universal.

This summer's Land of the Lost was one of those epic Hollywood disasters that...ended up costing an estimated $100 million and earned only $65 million at the worldwide box office.

Universal studio heads Marc Shmuger and David Linde were subsequently fired.

Land of the Lost's dismal box office helped land star Will Ferrell at the top of our annual list of Hollywood's Most Overpaid Stars. Ferrell is no longer the sure bet he seemed after hits like Elf ($220 million worldwide box office) and Talladega Nights ($162 million box office). Ferrell's 2008 film Semi-Pro earned only $43 million. Step Brothers did better with $128 million, but it wasn't enough to help Ferrell--mainly because ...

Expressed simply, Lakeview Terrace is a dark tale of racial prejudice, as a newly-wed couple move into a seemingly normal, cosmopolitan neighbourhood in Los Angeles only to have their wedded bliss spoiled by a bigoted neighbour who fundamentally disagrees with their interracial relationship. Sounds less than uplifting, does it not? But the most important thing to know pre-viewing is that Samuel L Jackson’s in it, which for a worrying amount of people will mean an instant rebuttal of the film regardless of merit. The fact that Neil The Wicker Man LaBute is helming cant have set many pulses racing either.

However, even to someone who strongly believes that Samuel L Jackson’s acting method lately involves shouting animatedly and heavily over-enunciating syllables (move over Al Pacino), the premise for Neil LaBute’s Lakeview Terrace appears somewhat of a welcome departure. The claustrophobic, racism-flavoured thriller appeared initially at least to be a far more subtle prospect, mostly devoid of the usual ferocious shouting that pepper Jackson’s recent performances.

It is a prospect made infinitely more appealing than its initial potential by the casting of Patrick Wilson- especially for those of us whose knowledge of Wilson’s career is limited largely to Watchmen and before ...

It's a good deal for both parties, so I'm not surprised to hear that Samuel L. Jackson and Marvel have come to a pay deal they can both agree on for the character of Nick Fury.

According to both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter tonight... Big Sam has agreed a deal with Marvel to play Nick Fury a further NINE times over the next several years, including in his own movie as the chief agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The deal includes the soon to be filming IRON MAN 2 and further in the future Marvel's tentpoles THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA, THOR, THE AVENGERS and their respective sequels.

Jackson previously wanted the same kind of money he earned on the near $600 million worldwide grossing IRON MAN but Marvel have been reluctant to pay big money to their actors this time around. They went cheaper for Don Cheadle over Terrence Howard... they lowballed an offer to Mickey Rourke which has cost them the recently Oscar nominated actor and very nearly lost director Jon Favreau for the same reason.

We don't know the particulars of this specific deal but I would guess it was Jackson who negoitated down, for what in truth is an easy gig ...

Samuel L. Jackson has confirmed to IGN that the recession has hit Marvel Films hard and that they can no longer afford him to pay him to make cameo's in IRON MAN 2, CAPTAIN AMERICA, THE AVENGERS etc.

You can see him make the announcement in a video over at Worst Previews, which you can find HERE.

Marvel, remember, already dropped Terrence Howard from IRON MAN 2 because of his outlandish wages and swapped with Don Cheadle who was willing to work cheaper. From what we've been hearing also, Mickey Rourke is taking on a much decreased wage packet to play Crymson Dynamo in the sequel in the hope that the added exposure to his Oscar nominated turn in THE WRESTLER will see him right for a lot more roles in the next 10 years.

Or maybe it's just that he has seen the future and the days of the big wage packets are truly gone. Maybe Samuel L. Jackson is still living in a dream world. And well let's be honest, has he really been worth the money studio's have thrown at him over the past five years? Does his name really mean anything to a project these days?

I can't help but ...

Determined to keep his beloved Central City safe, the Spirit pursues Central City’s villains from the shadows and seeks to remove the worst of them all; the megalomaniac known as the Octopus. Yet as busy as his ongoing mission keeps him, the dashing crusader always manages to make time for beautiful women, though he never quite knows if they want to seduce, love or kill him. But there is one lady who will never betray him, and to whom he will always be true: Central City, the proud old metropolis where he was born – twice.’

Thursday, December 4th, and THE SPIRIT production is on full charm offensive at a press conference in the relatively intimate Roseby Room of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Knightsbridge. On hand are some of the principal principals and free coffee, which I drank too much of… but more on that later.

Three news stories have hit the trades today that probably didn't deserve their own post but work quite well bungled together like this.

First up, Jim Caviezel will play a top MI5 operative whose routine investigation of a global corporation leads him to discover an imminent terrorist attack on London from intelligent the dangerous Samuel L. Jackson.

The movie is BLOWN and will be directed by by Martha Fiennes, the sister of Joseph and Ralph. Her husband George Tiffin, the cinematographer from THE SPIRIT will write and handle photography. [The Hollywood Reporter]

CASINO ROYALE director Martin Campbell will helm NAGASAKI DEADLINE, a NATIONAL TREASURE-esque thriller about an emotionally damaged FBI agent who must decipher historic events in a desperate race to avert a terrorist plot.

David and Peter Griffiths (THE HUNTED, COLLATERAL DAMAGE) wrote the original script which is being re-written by William Boyles Jr. (CAST AWAY).

The movie should begin production next year once Campbell is done with EDGE OF DARKNESS, the thriller starring Mel Gibson and Ray Winstone. [Variety]

AVATAR and TERMINATOR SALVATION actor Sam Worthington has joined the already cast Helen Mirren as a fellow Israeli Mossad agent hunting a Nazi war criminal in DEBT. The movie from director John Madden (SHAKESPEARE IN ...

The narrator plays a great role in Quentin Tarantino's INGLORIOUS BASTERDS. He is the see all, knows all. He is the voice of reason, the voice of the past and the future. The voice who is evil because he knows the truth far more clearly than any of the other characters.

He's only used briefly in the script but he is effective in small doses.

The news which seemingly is 100% solid from the inside contacts of The Playlist is that Tarantino favourite Samuel L. Jackson has nabbed the role of the narrator after calling Quentin, asking him why he wrote no parts from him in this film.

It's a similar situation for Jackson as to what happened on KILL BILL where the movie didn't warrant a place for him but Quentin found a way to include him as the piano player at the wedding chapel. I would suggest Jackson is too recognisable to be the cold voice of reason but who am I to tell Quentin what to do and besides as he has been the first to mention in the past... no-one does Quentin dialogue quite like Jackson.

I know Tarantino is a huge fan of THE KILLING by Stanley Kubrick, his ...

Samuel L. Jackson will play Sho’nuff, the Shogun of Harlem, in the Columbia Pictures remake of the 1985 Berry Gordy's cult classic THE LAST DRAGON.

The late Julius Carry played the role in the original and with a massive chip and ego on his shoulder would spout out questions such as "Am I the baddest mofo lowdown around this town?" which he would always reply with "Sho'nuff!"

Clearly he has been a big influence on the whole career of Jackson who calls himself a big fan of the movie that grossed nearly $26 million despite mostly negative reviews.

Dallas Jackson's (founder of the urban family label DJ Classicz) script will be similar to the original, following a young a martial arts student by the name of Leory Green whose quest to achieve the highest level of martial arts accomplishment known as The Glow, takes place on the streets of New York.

RZA of Wu Tang Clang will produce the movie that will be updated with a modern day hip hop feel.

Another new trailer to showcase for you today, this time it's from Frank Miller's directorial debut, THE SPIRIT, which is still struggling to look like a legitimate movie for me.

It still feels unfinished. There's a moment here where Samuel L. Jackson shouts out "Your not making this easy" which sums up the whole thing for me. It looks like an actor on a green screen, with his dialogue and movements feeling forced rather than natural, probably because of the working environment.

That moment's at 1:20ish.

CLICK HERE TO SEE THE TRAILER IN HD

I'm starting to take a liking to the score and I will admit that the movie looks really cool and interesting at some points but there's an extremely cartoony feel to it which I can't get away with. Sure SIN CITY had that aspect to but I think it's heightened to another level here.

Is this the new SIN CITY or is it more like the new SPEED RACER?

And is Eva Mendes taking off a towel enough to convince you to see this when it opens at Christmas?

Night Shyamalan has not yet put to bed his desire to make his UNBREAKABLE sequel, a movie he originally planned to follow-up with at the turn of the century but was knocked back when critics weren't so kind to his original picture eight years ago.

Though I couldn't help but think that the dislike came from an agenda to knock Shyamalan back after his SIXTH SENSE took off like wildfire and grossed $672 million worldwide. Simply put, in their eyes he could never match that first film.

Speaking to MTV, Shyamalan says he gets asked about an UNBREAKABLE 2 all the time...
“I tell you I get asked about it all the time, so it’s not [an idea] I ever forget,” Shyamalan told MTV News. “I genuinely just asked this question the other day — should I make ‘Unbreakable 2’?”

“I do love the [comic book movie] genre, I just wanna make sure that I’m able to express who I am,” explained Shyamalan. “I don’t want to get so lost in the subject that I have to neuter everything that’s me in it, so maybe ‘Unbreakable’ is the comic book thing I should do — I ...

In a recent interview about The Clone Wars on starwars.com, executive producer George Lucas talks about there being three worlds to the Star Wars universe:
There’s my world that I made up, there’s the licensing world, that’s the books, the comics, all that kind of stuff, the games, which is their world, and then there’s the fans’ world, which is also very rich in imagination, but they don’t always mesh. All I’m in charge of is my world.
According to Lucas, The Clone Wars lands firmly on this first world, a seventh movie in the Star Wars canon. But there's a double standard at work here. Lucas is happy to borrow from the second world whenever it suits his purposes. If you were to take a look at starwars.com today, you'd be hard-pressed to find a reference to Cartoon Network's award-winning 2003 series Star Wars: Clone Wars, yet The Clone Wars borrows from it wholesale.

For those who haven't seen the 2003 cartoon, Clone Wars takes place between the events of Episode II - Attack of the Clones and Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. Anakin Skywalker has earned himself a battlefield promotion and is now a full-fledged Jedi Knight, but ...

Here's our first look at Soul Men, the buddy comedy starring Samuel L. Jackson and Bernie Mac as a bickering pair of backup soul singers who decide to take a road trip together despite the fact that they haven’t spoken in two decades and lived very much apart.

The trip is to honor a fallen friend and their former band leader whose tribute concert they are putting aside their differences to reach. From the looks of things, they make it to the concert - though IMDB's plot synopsis don't mention the road trip at all, maybe the trades got that part wrong.

Both Jackson and Mac, two very charismatic actors have done all their own signing and performances on stage for the movie which marks their first ever pairing together.

Isaac Hayes (as himself), Jennifer Coolidge and Sean Hayes all support the Malcolm D. Lee (Undercover Brother) picture, written by Intolerable Cruelty scribes Matt Stone and Robert Ramsey.

Been really looking forward to this one. The movie sounds a lot more serious than comedic, I'm expecting Dreamgirls but without the cheese. The movie opens in November and I would love to see it perform.

A slightly different image to the one that we were granted with a while back for The Spirit. This one graces the front cover of the San Diego Official Comic-Con Mag and you may think it's early advertising but remember, the film is now hitting this year.

Christmas time to be precise, to match the snow...

I've actually just watched Jackie Brown for the fourth time tonight and it got me thinking about Jackson and how so much more exciting an actor he was in the mid to late 90's. So hungry for his work, relishing almost every role with a tremendous screen presence which matched up to any of the big stars that Hollywood had to offer.

Don't get me wrong, he's still very much capable these days. Coach Carter, Black Snake Moan and Resurrecting the Champ (all notably smaller works) show he can still carry a movie but for the big Hollywood productions - he doesn't seem as interested. The Star Wars prequels notably being phoned in performances but he's an actor that I'm sure Frank Miller took to in a heartbeat.

And we only need to watch Unbreakable to see how well he can play a great comic book villain.

So now we have Samuel L. Jackson in a suit for The Spirit - completely different to the attire he was wearing in those leaked photo's last week (which we forced to take down but I'm sure you could find them if you do some searching) and Scarlett Johnsson with some kind of weird pilot hat on? Or is it a fetish attire?

Now that we are starting to see some finished photo's from the film with the background in place it is after all beginning to look like Sin City (as the posters suggested) and not Will Eisner's vision.

Is Miller shooting two different movies here - a Miller version and an Eisner version?

I'm so confused. I wanted to see something in "The Spirit" of something like the 90's adaptation of The Shadow but I would have reluctantly settled for another Film Noir esque-Sin City BUT I guess it looks closest too Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.

We are getting a trailer next weekend when Miller debuts it at the New York Comic Con. Things should be an awful lot clearer then!

I had mildly high hopes for Lakeview Terrace, the movie that would feature a single father cop Samuel L. Jackson who for seemingly no other reason than a case of racism... terroiries his new neighbours, an inter-racial couple and tries to push them out of leaving town.
Jackson was of course perfectly cast and once the originally on board Ashton Kutcher was replaced by Patrick Wilson - my hopes were peaked even more.

Well the trailer has hit today and it's not brilliant. Feels terribly chopped together (we should be reminded that the film is directed by Neil Labute of The Wicker Man remake infamy) and it reminds me of The Whole Ten Yards - a black comedy.
It's no where near subtle, creepy or intense as I thought it would be. There's no moments of suspense or build up like Disturbia and from the very beginning it would seem that they know Jackson is out to get them.

Are the L.A. fires going to be used as a sub-plot here too or just some background fodder?

You know I was saying yesterday that Frank Miller's version of The Spirit was likely NOT to be the goofy version of the character and instead a depiction of the detective as if he were Batman living in Miller's Sin City world?

Well pleasantly, I'm happy to say I'm wrong. The Spirit is goofy. He's not too far removed from Adam West's Batman of the 60's, The Green Hornet and very much akin to the comic books and detective radio serials of the 40's and 50's and these pictures capture that beautifully.

And I should have known it all along. It's Frank Miller - no one loves Eisner's original vision more than him. I mean they were pals, he aint' gonna disrespect the character.

DON'T dismiss these images because the photo's of the characters look goofy. The same could have been said about both 300 and Sin City during it's production. Wait until the you see what they look like with the green screen.

I don't know how long we can keep these photo's online but for now, here's MANY shots from the set of the film from Dark Horizons...

This ain't going to be the rather goofy version of the character that Will Eisner created.

This is Frank Miller baby. The guy who pretty much helped shape the Batman we know today with his stories and drawings, the guy who gave us a film noir like no other full of Booze, Broads & Bullets in his Sin City series which he also helped turn into the greatest literal movie adaptation of a comic book yet.

The guy who made shirt less historical epics cool again with 300.

It's going to be dark, brooding, gloomy, very sexy (Scarlett Johansson, Eva Mendes, Jaime King - in a Frank Miller movie - wow!), violent. It's going to be as if Batman lived in Sin City.

Wonder if he has shot the film black and white too. You know I really do love the "Adam West' vibe of the original incarnation of The Spirit but I frikkin' love Frank Miller and film noir is one of my favourite genres.

Review by Oliver Pfeiffer

[rating: 1]

Its official: Hayden Christensen has about as much screen presence and charisma as a plank of plywood. If you thought his feeble and browed groans in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith were the unfortunate result of an emotionally regarded director than wait until you see him get ‘grumpy’ or ‘angry’ or ‘woe a girl’ as the titular globetrotting guy in Jumper.

Obviously Christensen’s agent is signing him up for anything he can get his bemused actor into for fear of what happened to poor old Star Wars actor Mark Hamill. But the problem there is Hamill was a decent actor, who utterly convinced as Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars trilogy and was equally impressive in his ‘other’ notable screen appearance in Samuel Fuller’s epic war movie The Big Red One. Now we have Christensen, a weak ex-soap siren getting star billing in both this lame excuse ...

This makes no sense at all.

According to a small paragraph reporting on the Wizard World Panel in L.A. on Sunday it appears that whilst Samuel L. Jackson most definitely shot a cameo as Nick Fury for the Iron Man movie, it would seem Marvel have chosen NOT to include the scene in the film.

So all that day (or maybe more) of filming and Marvel's slack attempt at secrecy was basically for nothing. Sam's gonna be pissed...

Will it make it's way as a deleted scene on the DVD or is it being kept back for an extended edition (which doesn't really do the character much good really).

Is it actually being kept for The Incredible Hulk, and is the scene with Robert Downey's Iron Man the big crossover?

Or has it simply being deleted because of time or another kind of purpose?

Who knows. Maybe they have actually shot a scene which will be used later in a Nick Fury movie, which Marvel might be looking at for 2010.

Frank Miller's first solo venture into movie making may have found it's first star. Samuel L. Jackson is in talks for Miller's adaptation of the comic book series The Spirit according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Jackson would play the Spirit's nemesis, the Octopus, a meek lab assistant who reinvents himself as a psychotic nightmare that kills anyone unfortunate enough to see his face. The Octopus' tentacles reach into every aspect of crime in fictitious Central City, a city he plans to wipe out.
Awesome. The Spirit is a comic series that I'm not at all familiar with but this villain sounds cool. Apparently you never see his face in the comics but you could tell who it was by his distinct gloves, which will likely become a gimmick they will want to use in the movie.

Jackson made a superb comic book villain in Unbreakable and it's nice to see this type of movie role again from an actor who has done a tremendous amount of crap over the last couple of years.

Miller's next job is to find a lead actor who is capable of playing The Spirit and someone who can match up to the mighty Sam on the big screen.
