Latino Review are reporting that Sam Worthington is being lined up as Vlad III, the Prince of Wallachia, the infamous ruler who impaled thousands of Turks in the 15th century Ottoman Empire resistance and then by some religious or supernatural curse, ended up living forever for his crimes against humanity as literature's most famous blood sucking vampire.

The movie is Dracula Year Zero, and it's to be directed by the talented Alex Proyas (Knowing, I Robot, Dark City) from a script by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, two geeks who have also wrote a Flash Gordon script.

The movie has a $100 million budget at Universal, and with that price tag and the casting of Worthington, it's obvious Proyas will be going the action heavy route with this adaptation. It will probably run close to 300 for the majority of the picture, with a few dramatic bits thrown in at the end as our protagnist Vlad turns into the blood thirsty creature who would then act as the villain in the sequel - as the fully formed Dracula.

I could maybe buy Worthington as the ruler of a big empire and a killing machine warrior - he makes a credible action lead and ...

There are several things that need to be said about Avatar, and they all involve brushing aside the hype (or active dislike of hype) and objectively looking at what James Cameron has done with this incredibly expensive, and incredibly ambitious, sci-fi epic.

The first is that it is not that original. The story is an amalgamation of several plot lines we've seen time and time again. By sending the humans to a lush, but technologically regressive, location in order to exploit the natural resources we are treated to the standard anti-colonial narrative that praises the lifestyle of the 'noble savage'. There are moments recognizable from Dances With Wolves and, in a more sci-fi slant, Dune. There are even elements analogous to images and themes of Ferngully and Zulu.

The second is that the visuals aren't the most amazing things you've ever seen. The 3-D is great, don't get me wrong, but it is nothing we haven't seen achieved by Disney Pixar, or in films such as The Polar Express. The CGI landscapes are hugely impressive, but similarly ambitious landscapes have been produced much earlier, in films like Blade Runner and Dune again), and more recently in 2012. Likewise, innovative animated characters are ...

I should know better. I really should.

But my 14 year old inner geek leaps from within, slaps me in the face and reminds me of the innocent joy of watching adventure monster/epics on the big screen like the good old days, anytime I see anything to do with Louis Leterrier's Clash of the Titans remake. I feel less cynical about CGI when it's an adventure epic with GREAT looking monsters.

I grew up with the original - always my second favourite Ray Harryhausen picture behind Jason and The Argonauts. I know Medusa, sand scorpions, Zeus (Liam Neeson looks great here, but why does he need armour if he is a God?), I know every fabric of this legend.

So I guess you could call my excitement towards the March opening Clash of The Titans remake part-nostalgia but there's something breathtaking about the universe this movie plays in and the monsters that inhabit it that leaves you, in the same way The Lord of the Rings trilogy did, repeating the trailer a thousand times on your PC in the build up to it's release.

I don't mind the CGI here, I think they've done a pretty good job with it. Or a good job ...

In the year when Star Trek rebooted a complex 40 year franchise history with elegance, a smart simplicity and an accessibility for those who wouldn't know a Vulcan from a Klingon, the huge flaw of Terminator Salvation is obvious. It just doesn't work as a stand-alone movie.

You really need to have studied every detail of the three movies past to have a basic start here, and even then screenwriters John Brancato and Michael Ferris won't help you along the way.

You have to put the pieces of this jigsaw puzzle together yourself and it's exhausting. There's no story here, there's just character names we remember filling the roles of what we would expect them to fill given their standing in the three movies past.

If you had never seen a Terminator movie, or had only glimpsed at the franchise once or twice, then I just don't see how you could have been satisfied by it. Surely, when you pay your money to see a film you expect to see a complete story, with character development and if you are leaving things open for a sequel, then that's fine but we need to see some progression or reasoning for what we are witnessing.

I’d never been to an IMAX screening before. They’re massive screens aren’t they? Almost like an entire wall…a tsunami-like wave…where images threaten to pulverise the audience. And this seems to be James Cameron’s intentions for the 3-D release of his latest film Avatar. It is pure Cameron: loud, brash, macho, stupid and occasionally breathtaking. A publicity representative gave a little speech before the film and completely stone-faced said: “This could be the greatest film of all-time.”

The entire audience laughed. Quite audibly.

The fifteen minute clip introduces the character of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) on a spaceship with a startling, albeit, much more expensive-looking set design reminiscent of Aliens (1986).

There’s even cryogenic sun-bed-type thing. And Sigourney Weaver plays a doctor!

The rest of the preview footage is set on the alien planet, Pandora and introduces the Na’vi beings who look, quite frankly, like they belong in an Xbox 360 game…or something like that. There are also dinosaur-type beasts and flying dragons too. It is all remarkable looking and yet strangely distancing. Asking the audience to emotionally invest in a story of cartoon-looking giant blue aliens…it is a bit mad, and I’m sure Cameron is holding some wonderful stuff back for the big release. ...

Things may be looking up in the thriller department, depending on your perspective of the Cruise-meister and the man Hollywood are desperately trying to make into the next big thing, possibly quicker than he could be possibly ready for.

The Hollywood Reporter say Avatar and Terminator Salvation's Sam Worthington has replaced Tom Cruise in the Hollywood remake of the French spy thriller The Tourist, as Cruise (quite smartly) has chosen to reunite with Cameron Diaz for a comedy from James Mangold.

Charlize Theron is still on board as the female interpol agent who uses an American tourist (now Worthington), so that she can get rid of an elusive criminal with whom she once had an affair. Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day helmer Bharat Nalluri directs, with a January start date.

The Worthington replacement might be a savvy move, as Cruise's star power in the thriller genre has dimmed a bit, and Worthington is probably starting to get some recognition with the public. Though he's some way away from selling movie tickets on his name/face alone. Maybe Avatar will change that?

Just when did 32 year old Australian actor Sam Worthington become Hollywood's flavour of the month?

You watch Chris Pine in Star Trek, and you get it, you feel comfortable that he was the right man for the role. Pine has the on screen charisma and all the required abilities to etch out a long CV of top billing performances over the coming years.

He's earnt the right to star in Tony Scott's next blockbuster. And if further roles among the Hollywood elite come his way which I'm positive they will, you feel like he has deserved it.

But just what has this Aussie guy done?

I'm baffled as to how he went from the killer croc movie Rogue in 2007 to starring in Terminator Salvation, Avatar and Clash of the Titans in such a short space of time, cast in all of the above before anyone had seen a single frame of his acting in those movies.

I only ask because his performance in Terminator Salvation is so excruciatingly painful that I'm now worried he is going to end up as the new Colin Farrell, an actor who was pushed into roles he was never suited for. The above (and one below, after the jump) from ...

I like that Sam Worthington has gotten a big name billing, alongside Bale. This kid is going to be something to watch folks, you don't get cast in Terminator, James Cameron's Avatar and the lead role in Clash of the Titans without having something special in your locker.

It got a release date this week, so we know that GREEN LANTERN, the next superhero to get the big money roll of the dice from Warner Bros. is less than 22 months away from hitting our screens.

So WB. need to decide soon who will wear the green of Hal Jordan but according to Latino Review, the studio have so far found that task very difficult.

They say THE NOTEBOOK star Ryan Gosling (who LR have mentioned before in conjuction with this role) has turned the movie down, as has INTO THE WILD and SPEED RACER's Emile Hirsch.

Sam Worthington, who seems to be a name who always crops up these days with blockbuster gigs, turned it down because he's busy working on CLASH OF THE TITANS at the same studio.

So they are having to delve a little deeper to find their man and the word is, Russian born actor Anton Yelchin, who isn't 20 till March is who they are going to approach.

You may not know his name but once I tell you he's playing Chekov in STAR TREK and is playing Kyle Reese in TERMINATOR SALVATION, by the end of May he is certainly going to be geek radar's everywhere.

The much wanted Josh Brolin has told MTV that he did indeed turn down a role in the upcoming Warner Bros. revival of the TERMINATOR franchise because he ultimately felt "it didn't feel right".

McG boastingly told the world earlier in the year that he was going after Brolin who at that point had just come off an incredible 2007 and had just seen himself cast as George W. Bush in Oliver Stone's W. In the end, Brolin turned WB down and Sam Worthington instead took the role of Marcus.

“Yeah. I talked to Christian [Bale] for a couple hours,” Brolin told MTV. “I really liked the script though I hear that’s not what they filmed. The one I read was very interesting and dark. Ultimately though I didn’t think it felt right.”
Securing Brolin would have been a massive coup for McG who already at that point had the massive A-lister of Christian Bale on his side and in great timing is now coming off one of the biggest movies of all time with THE DARK KNIGHT.

Brolin in the coming weeks with have to decide if another Warner Bros. tentpole, that of JONAH HEX, is right for him to do. I speculated ...

First up, Jim Caviezel will play a top MI5 operative whose routine investigation of a global corporation leads him to discover an imminent terrorist attack on London from intelligent the dangerous Samuel L. Jackson.

The movie is BLOWN and will be directed by by Martha Fiennes, the sister of Joseph and Ralph. Her husband George Tiffin, the cinematographer from THE SPIRIT will write and handle photography. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Two huge movies based on Greek mythology have both received casting announcements on the same day, once again fuelling the excitement for two movies that have mirrored each other through virtually every point of development.

(They were both greenlit at the same time, they are both budgeted at $100 million, they will both be greenscreen ala 300 and are both based on Greek mythology, just different plots).

First up, Warner Bros. are circling Sam Worthington to play Perseus in their big budget remake of the 80's classic CLASH OF THE TITANS to be directed by Louis Letterier (THE INCREDIBLE HULK, TRANSPORTER) and scripted by the famous Lawrence Kasdan (RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, EMPIRE STRIKES BACK).

CLASH OF THE TITANS tells the story of Zeus son Perseus' journey and battles against Medusa (as pictured above).

Worthington has recently made himself one of Hollywood's most sought after young actors after James Cameron cast him in AVATAR and recommended him to McG for TERMINATOR SALVATION.

Next up, Relativity Media's greek movie WAR OF THE GODS is in talks with The Tudors star Henry Cavill to play Theseus in their Tarsem Singh (THE FALL, THE CELL) directed epic.

In a new blog entry on the official website for TERMINATOR SALVATION, director McG gives us some updates on next year's film which he says has now finished principal photography and has now entered the lengthy post-production process.

He claims the early cuts he has shown Christian Bale and Sam Worthington have impressed the two actors and they like the direction the movie is headed in, which he claims is a character piece which is complimented by fantastic visual effects.

Some interesting quotes from his entry...
Charlie Gibson is aware of his responsibility as the VFX supervisor and second unit director of this film... there's one sequence in particular where we're trying to achieve something that's never been done before. I don't want to talk about it because we haven't been successful yet...

Most importantly, Christian and Sam bring power to the rolls of John Connor and Marcus Wright. This is a story of two destinies colliding. Connor is part of a resistance comprised of the ethnicities that make up the globe. This film is so much more that just Los Angeles. It reflects the global crisis of man, all of man versus machine.
McG also praises the work of Conrad Buff, the editor from ...

For the first time in six movies (seven if you include KING LEAR but this one will film first), stunning British actress Keira Knightley has agreed to star in "non-period" movie. This one it seems will be set in modern day New York!

The film is titled LAST NIGHT, where she will co-star with Eva Mendes, Sam Worthington and Guillaume Canet for the directing debut of Massy Tadjedin, the screenwriter of Knightley's THE JACKET. She also wrote this movie too.

Story follows a married couple, apart for a night while the husband takes a business trip with a colleague to whom he’s attracted. While he’s resisting temptation, his wife encounters her past love.
No word on who is playing what character just yet though Knightley is being topped as the lead, so presumably she is the wife and Worthington her husband. That would make Canet her past love and Mendes the husband's bit on the side. That seems to make sense, right?

Production begins next month on the Gaumont and Nick Wechsler Production according to Variety. I would guess this deal has come about late because I remember reading just the other day that Knightley was taking some time off to "cook and watch ...

Christian Bale's John Connor comes face to face with Sam Worthington's mysterious Marcus Wright in a newly released official Warner Bros. image of their biggest Summer release of 2009 - Terminator Salvation.

The image is taken from an intense scene shown at Comic Con where Connor angrily shouted at Wright; "You killed my father. You killed my mother. But you won’t kill me.”

Directed by McG (Charlie's Angels), the movie is due to open on May 22nd 2009, co-starring Anton Yelchin, Bryce Dallas Howard, Common, Roland Kickinger, Moon Bloodgood, Jadagrace and Helena Bonham Carter.

In the film, set in post-apocalyptic 2018, John Connor is fated to lead the human resistance against Skynet and its army of Terminators. But the future Connor was raised to believe in is altered in part by the appearance of Marcus Wright, a stranger whose last memory is of being on death row. Connor must decide whether Marcus has been sent from the future, or rescued from the past. As Skynet prepares its final onslaught, Connor and Marcus both embark on an odyssey that takes them into the heart of Skynet's operations, where they uncover the terrible secret behind the possible annihilation of mankind.

I heard a lot of people walked out of the Australian horror Wolf Creek three years ago and actually at the screening I attended an elderely couple were getting extremely uncomfortable with the film - though I think they managed to stick with it. Didn't look like they enjoyed themselves though.

And neither did I. It was my least favourite film of 2005.

Wolf Creek was an exercise in torture porn and was simply two hours of young men and women being the victims of a sadistic serial killer. It wasn't thrilling, exciting or of any value. It was 2 hours of just seeing someone tortured and when you consider how many British and American back-packers have gone to that country and this kind of thing has happened to them - well it just makes you sick to your stomach.

I hated it. And that comes from someone who loved the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre - a film it was obviously paying close attention too.

So Greg McLean's next film is Rogue and it follows an American journalist (Radha Mitchell) on assignment in the Australian outback encounters a man-eating crocodile. Aussie actor Sam Worthington co-stars.

Are we set for the same kind of horrendous torture ...

Does this quote signal the death of the new Terminator franchise?
Yelchin will play a teen version of Reese, the man who fathered world savior John Connor in the original "Terminator" film.

Reese, one of the children who survived a machine-driven nuclear holocaust, befriends Marcus (Sam Worthington), an early edition of the Terminator cyborg played in previous films by Arnold Schwarzenegger.
No it's not the fact that Anton Yelchin (Chekov in the new Star Trek) has signed up to play Kyle Reese. That's fine, and the interactions with him and his son John Connor (Christian Bale) who is going to be so much older than him is going to be pretty interesting.

What bothers me is the "friendly Terminator" hint and the reveal of exactly what character Sam Worthington has in this new trilogy.

Does anyone have a problem with Reese suddenly becoming a character who befriends robot Terminators? That's now what I saw in the original Terminator movies. Isn't that going against the mythology of this universe?

And isn't a friendly Terminator plot boring as hell? Haven't we seen that already?

Of all the storylines they could have chosen for a new Terminator movie, it sounds like they are going for the tired old, same old ...

Warner Bros. need a new title for the fourth Terminator flick, any suggestions?

I actually think Terminator: Salvation doesn't suck as a new title. It sounds kind of apocalyptic and is less of a mouthful than Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins.

Hell, even Terminator: The Future Begins is just as cheesy as Batman Begins. I'm surprised they haven't gone for the aged old and lazy Terminator Returns title.

The brand new 3 story trilogy is set to open May 22nd 2009 and will surprisingly star Christian Bale as John Connor and Sam Worthington in an unknown role.

Last we heard McG was trying to convince Josh Brolin who kicked our ass with great performance after great performance in 2007 to star as The Terminator himself, something that we probably shouldn't rule out considering McG managed to secure Bale.

By personal recommendation from TERMINATOR creator James Cameron, Sam Worthington has been cast by McG for TERMINATOR SALVATION: THE FUTURE BEGINS.

The Australian actor who has been working on AVATAR with Cameron for most of the last 12 months, will play the role of Marcus, 'central figure' in the first of a new trilogy that begins after Skynet has destroyed much of humanity in a nuclear holocaust.

Worthing becomes the second actor cast after Christian Bale nabbed the role of John Connor. Josh Brolin we heard previously was the director's choice for the role of The Terminator but we have nothing official on that front just yet.

So Cameron has some input on the new TERMINATOR franchise after all. He famously kept himself very distanced from the last movie a few years back and wanted nothing to do with the direction they were taking but phone calls to McG this time around would suggest he is far more interested in this new take on the material.

That's gotta be a positive. I wonder if he has read the script, which really can't be as bad as we thought when you see some of the names involved in the picture.
