Jon Favreau knows how to cut a damn fine trailer. He's left it late in the day to show off Iron Man 2 but boy, was it worth the wait...

SEE IT NOW IN QUICKTIME HD RIGHT HERE

Stark's still the comic book supehero's comedian. Great scene to kick-off the trailer.

Robert Downey Jr and Gwyneth Paltrow have the best chemistry between a male/female combo in any comic book movie I've ever seen.

"You Complete Me" brought a bigger smile to my face than anything I've seen in any trailer, (barring the opening of the Kick-Ass reel that played at Comic Con with John Williams' Superman score) that I've seen for any movie opening 2010.

Iron Man shows that CGI superheroes can work, in the same way Spider-Man did. Do we think this is because masked, fully costumed hero characters work just fine in CGI but where you have to see the face of the hero composed by CGI, e.g. The Hulk, it just doesn't look right because CGI can't capture the right emotions?

Citizen Kane like screen transitions in a trailer! Jesus, Jon... you have outdone yourself Sir. How cool is that, and how much weight does it bring to the trailer which actually ...

Moon, which I saw during it's limited U.K. run in the Summer and for the second time this morning with the newly released Blu-Ray transfer, is the best isolation movie I've seen in a long, long while, and possibly the best movie of 2009 to deal with the human condition. At least that I've seen so far.

It's rival in that regard is Up but Moon is more consistent with the theme, more gut-wrenching at it's big pay-off moments.

It's a certain future classic. The movie that all those who reacted favourably to Sunshine two years ago thought Danny Boyle's movie would end up being until it's third act crippled the greatness of the first two. No such foul up's here.

A Criterion collection style cover design
from Sony Pictures Classic. Great job!
I didn't review Moon when I saw it during my July screening. I think I mentioned a few times in passing how much I enjoyed it, but Moon is a tough sci-fi drama to review because you can't really talk an awful lot about the main body of it for fear of spoilers. I've noticed that a lot of my blogging peers decided to take exactly the same position as I ...

Landing at Obsessed Towers yesterday was this piece of Blu-Ray beauty and as much of a pain in the ass this damn postal strike has been for getting review copies in on time around these parts, when p.r. publicists have the foresight to send things out via special delivery, then guys like me gets loads of lead time to devour the product before writing our review.

Good job!

I'm looking forward to my second viewing of this extraordinarily original and emotionally thought-provoking movie which is one of my favourite movies of the 2009 and for me... has to be considered for Best Actor (Sam Rockwell) and Best Original Screenplay (Duncan Jones) come Oscar balloting time. No question it has to be up for those.
Moon Blu-Ray is out next Monday in the U.K.
and will be reviewed in the coming days.

The nods to 2001: A Space Odyssey, the classic Andrei Tarkovsky film Solaris, and maybe a more obscure reference Bruce Dern's Silent Running are present with Duncan Jones' directorial debut Moon, one of the highly praised films that came out of the Sundance Film Festival which Sony Pictures Classics will release on June 12th in the U.S. (no U.K. date yet).

Moon feels like it belongs firmly in that late 60's/early 70's era. The time where challenging science fiction stories, even those not set in space like Planet of the Apes, were constantly being played on our screens where aliens were no longer the enemy, it was man itself and his failings as the imperfect human being. Unable to live with other people, and unable to live all by themselves.

There's been a telling shift recently back to this kind of character based science fiction storytelling, obviously with Soderbergh'sremake of Solaris, Danny Boyle's 2/3rd's classic Sunshine and even the Disney kids movie with a robot lead... Wall*E.

And I'm so happy that in the usual mindless Summer blockbuster season, our American friends will have the opportunity to have their mind tested by a movie that isn't doing everything in it's power to make $300 million. Hopefully it ...

This seems legit, a trade announcement from both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter that Jon Favreau has once again out done himself with his casting for the IRON MAN franchise.

Putting in doubt what AICN call a "premature casting announcement" for Stallone's THE EXPENDABLES, Mickey Rourke is in talks to play a tattooed Russian heavy named Ivan who becomes a man with deadly, technologically enhanced coilsplay. He goes by the name Crimson Dynamo.

The Crimson Dynamo wears an armored battle-suit that serves as an exoskeleton, providing the wearer with superhuman strength and durability. The suit's outer layer was composed of a carborundum matrix alloy, and is equipped with: hand-blasters that can fire high-frequency electrical bolts; small missiles contained in the back shoulder area of the battle-suit; computers and radio transmitter and receiver; boot jets that allow flight. Subsequent versions of the battle-suit have featured upgrades of various kinds, by the Gremlin and other Russian scientists.
Both IRON MAN 2 and THE EXPENDABLES will be shooting at roughly the same time, it's probably going to be one or the other for Rourke. The sensible career choice of course would be to go for IRON MAN, which probably will also have the big money attached ...

We've spoke about first time director Duncan Jones' upcoming drama MOON a couple of times here at Obsessed With Film this year and if you haven't been hooked by the ambitious plot which follows an astronaut's decent into madness when he is stranded in solitary confinement on the moon for three years, then these images might just do it for ya.

Sam Rockwell plays the astronaut and for the most part (with the exception of flashbacks and maybe the film's opening) he is the only actor you will see on screen for two hours.

Kevin Spacey voices the computer, who similar to Hal in 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, is the antagonist of the movie and heightens Rockwell's madness.

The movie, which will have a score by Clint Mansell (the guy who did the memorable themes for Darren Aronofsky's THE FOUNTAIN and REQUIEM FOR A DREAM) will be out sometime next year.

Kevin Spacey, last seen manipulating M.I.T. students into card counting Las Vegas casino's out of thousands of dollars, will voice the likely to be evil computer robot in the upcoming Sam Rockwell starring drama Moon.

The movie sees Rockwell isolated on the lunar surface for three years as a miner, desperately seeing out the last of his contracted work so he can get home to his wife and kids but presumably with the mental torturings from Spacey's ever present voice.

Things get worse from him however, as he finds out before the end of his deal the LUNAR coorp have decided to replace him with his own clone...
[In] Moon, that guy's got a big problem. He's been stuck on the moon for three years, and he meets his own clone. So he's got a big problem and he has to get home. Oh and he doesn't know how long he has to live. So he's got some pretty Shakespearean problems.
Duncan Jones (the son of legendary Brit David Bowie) wrote and directed the film, which has a particuarly small cast (IMDB list 6 other actors but they are mostly supporting voices back home) and will focus mostly on Rockwell's character, and him alone.

Still suffers greatly from Fight Club comparisons and I hope they keep a voice-over narration and talking into the camera at a minimum but the trailer for the second adaptation of a Chuck Palahinuk novel looks great, largely done to it's off-beat vulgarity and twisted humor which fits lead Sam Rockwell down to the ground.

Maybe feels a little Sundance-like, a little Indie cult knowing - but fuck it I'm there. This is kinda shit is right up my alley...

Why not CHOKE on the HD trailer HERE!
Actor Clark Gregg makes his directorial debut here with the film due out late September. Angelica Huston, Kelly MacDonald and Brad William Henke co-star.

Choke - only the second movie adaptation of a Chuck Palahniuk novel (the first being Fight Club) is expected to get a theatrical release in September after impressing Fox Searchlight enough at the Sundance Film Festival to get a distribution deal.

Here's our first look at the movie's poster. I haven't read much Palahniuk but this poster certainly carrys the imagery of the covers of his novels. I like it...

Sam Rockwell leads as a sex-addicted con-man who pays for his mother’s (Angelica Huston) hospital bills by playing on the sympathies of those who save him from (intentionally) choking to death. Kelly MacDonald also co-stars.

Comparing the movie to Fight Club is likely to only ever lead to unfavourable reviews for Choke and it would certainly be unfair for actor turned writer/director Clark Gregg who makes his directorial debut here.

Though comparisons to Fight Club might be difficult to avoid...

Drew Barrymore, Kate Beckinsale & Sam Rockwell are also on board according to Variety, they are probably his three children.

The movie is actually a remake of a 1990 Italian film Stanno tutti bene from Giuseppe Tornatore who had previously helmed the classic Cinema Paradiso. Both films carry a Ennio Morricone score.

The remake will be written and directed by Kirk Jones (Waking Ned, Nanny McPhee).

Sounds a little bit like Jack Nicholson's About Schmidt.

I've never seen the original myself but the fact that it comes from Tornatore has peaked my interest. I absolutely adore his Paradiso movie.

There is a certain inevitably about The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford that hangs over this film like a bleak stormy rain cloud ready to unleash it’s might onto the beautiful landscape. I will give you a clue – it’s in the title!

Not that the ultimate spoiler any film has ever been so blatantly tagged with in the history of cinema is to any determent to the final piece, if anything we get a heightened awareness of the melancholic fable. We know exactly where it’s headed, the stares into each others souls from the notorious outlaw Jesse James (Brad Pitt) and his killer Robert Ford (Casey Affleck) turn into a dance of death that becomes the final duel and fateful ending that would give many a psychological expert a headache.

Like a detective who has finished mopping up a crime scene we are anxious to know how the murder was put together and the real pleasure is finding out just what led Robert Ford into becoming the man whose grave is marked "The man who shot Jesse James".

Ford killed the often romanticised and incorrectly dubbed Robin Hood figure (let's be honest James was no innocent man - ...

Two movies I can't wait to see this year are CHOKE and the adaptation of the awesome novel THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE, the latter movie especially.

And we have some cool news today about both movies. They have both been given release dates...

First up, THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE will open on June 6th in the U.S. going up against the always marketable Adam Sandler and his comedy YOU DON'T MESS WITH THE ZOHAN and the animated animal movie KUNG FU PANDA.

It's just about the only summer release slot the film could go for that wouldn't be eaten up by a big blockbuster though last year I NOW PROUNOUNCE YOU CHUCK AND LARRY showed just how much money there still is in an Adam Sandler vehicle ($120 million domestic).

THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE stars Eric Bana as involuntary time traveller who must cope with is disease whilst trying to enjoy his relationship with the love of his life Rachel McAdams. The film comes from FLIGHTPLAN director Robert Schwentke and we should now be close to seeing an actual trailer for this thing soon.

Also given a release is CHOKE, the Clark Gregg adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk's novel which was picked up by Fox Searchlight ...

Tuesday morning saw Fox Searchlight spend $5 million to secure the rights to the Clark Gregg directed CHOKE, which one reviewer on the web said it played to cheers at the Sundance Film Festival.

The second adaptation from a Chuck Palahniuk novel (the first, need I remind you being FIGHT CLUB?) stars Sam Rockwell as a sex-addicted con-man who pays for his mother's (Angelica Huston) hospital bills by playing on the sympathies of those who save him from (intentionally) choking to death.

The good news from the reviews coming out of the festival have been the confirmation that Rockwell has a Ed-Norton like voice-over which perfectly conveys Palahniuk's voice from the novel though the humor this time is more on the light-hearted scale rather than full on cynical.

In fact we have been warned that if we are Palahniuk fans, then we probably won't like this work but then again I remember the same kind of mumblings when FIGHT CLUB was released a decade ago... and look how that turned out!

It wasn't a big surprise the movie sold based on the author's work, though it's unknown if Searchlight's deal will cover Europe and in particular the U.K.
