Two related stories hit the web yesterday at roughly the same time, both concerning the rapidly moving towards production Spider-Man 4.

First the truth bits...

27 year old British actress Romola Garai who played the older Saoirse Ronan part in Atonement has auditioned for an unspecified female lead role in the next web-slinging adventure of Peter Parker. The audition was taped, presumably as Raimi wasn't in town.

Immediately my mind turned to her as Black Cat but it could just as easy be a new possible love interest. Or if you look at her, could they possibly be contemplating re-casting Gwen Stacy?
Garai certainly has a bit of Gwen Stacy about her.
/film carry a link to The Observer where Garai reveals her audition...
"Love is at the root of everything good that has ever happened and will happen.” This phrase swam into focus as I moved up the escalator at Oxford Circus tube on Tuesday morning on my way to put myself “on tape” for a part in Spider-Man 4. This is the acting equivalent of the London Marathon in that it’s important to try your best as long as you understand that you aren’t going to win.
So onto the oddly coincided timing of a ...

Monday 26th October 2009. The day of the British DVD and Blu-Ray release of Sam Raimi's Drag Me to Hell, and a significant event in the history of horror DVD releases in general.

Timed almost poetically to coincide with the cinematic release of the sublimely enjoyable Zombieland, Raimi's movie is a triumph for the other type of horror movie. From neither of the twin favourites of slasher rehashes or complex Korean psycho-horrors (fellow writer Mike Edwards claimed 3D Horrors were one of the kingpins in his original review, but I cant see past R-slashes myself), Drag Me to Hell is a good-old fashioned monster flick, resplendent with shocks and gore, and joyfully chocked full of Raimi's signature humour.

If Spider-Man was Raimi’s Hollywood opus- the moment the fan-boy got big boots, Drag Me To Hell is the moment he returned to his true calling. Everything about this film screams Raimi, from the writing to the design of Mrs Ganush and the other various demonic presences. It’s one for the fans who might have been turned off as the Spider-Man films progressed, believing their God to be moving too far into irredeemably consumer-friendly territory. The best thing that can be said in that ...

James Vanderbilt, the screenwriter of Zodiac and the guy who penned the first draft of Spider-Man 4 which begins production early Spring for a May 2011 release, has been "quietly" hired by Sony to pen the fifth and sixth installment in the web-slinging superhero series, say Variety.

Which is an interesting move as Sam Raimi wasn't 100% keen on his original script and two new scribes, David Lindsay-Abaire and Tobey Maguire's writer/director friend Gary Ross was brought on to make it more to the director's liking.

Just another sign that Sony are planning for life after Raimi perhaps - who surely will be done after 4 when he has the massive World of Warcraft series waiting in the wings for him.

My personal opinion is Vanderbilt's hiring for the fifth and sixth movie (which is likely to be similar to Kill Bill 1 and 2 in terms of really being one over-sized movie), is so it can get under way quickly whilst Tobey Maguire (currently hired to 5) and Kirsten Dunst (only attached currently to the fourth) will still be a reasonable age.

In terms of who the villains could be... I'm desperate to see Kraven's Last Hunt adapted for screen, and The Lizard was ...

A couple of months ago, I was fortunate enough to see an unfinished cut of Sam Raimi’s glorious return to the horror genre, Drag Me To Hell. This week saw Sam Raimi and his two lead actors Alison Lohman and Justin Long on whirlwind promotional duties in London.

On a rainy Bank Holiday morning, I went along to a central London locale to have a quick chat with the great director himself and his actors.

OWF would like to introduce Martyn Conterio to the staff with one helluva debut review...

It almost felt like a secret. The instructions, clear: arrive at the location; at the specific time…come alone. The chance to see an early, unfinished cut of Sam Raimi’s new film Drag Me To Hell in the bowels of a Soho screening room, months before general release, was too great an opportunity to miss.

Sat in the dark, eyes wide, as the film’s title filled the screen and ghost train-like music played, the level of expectation and anticipation recalled the joys and fears of watching the Evil Dead trilogy - feelings bound to be replicated amongst audiences when the film hits cinema screens later in the year. Raimi’s career over the past 15 years has been interesting to say the least. It’s been less interesting for his many horror fans though…For Love of the Game, anybody?

Consistent work in a variety of genres in film and television over the past twenty-five years has bestowed upon Raimi a great privilege - he is a director with legions of fans (known as Deadites). Having directed the Evil Dead films and become the poster boy for ...

What with the coverage we have already given Drag Me To Hell in the run up to its release, it seems a little pointless to offer my official thoughts from Cannes in the usual manner, so instead you get this...
1. It's pure thorough-bred Raimi
If Spiderman was Raimi's Hollywood opus- the moment the fan-boy got big boots, Drag Me To Hell is the moment he returned to his true calling. Everything about this film screams Raimi, from the writing to the design of Mrs Ganush and the other various demonic presences. It's one for the fans who might have been turned off as the Spiderman films progressed, believing their God to be moving too far into irredeemably consumer-friendly territory. The best thing that can be said in that case is that Drag Me To Hell is what The Evil Dead Trilogy would have been (minus Bruce Campbell of course) had they been made after Spiderman, and that being the case, I now fully welcome the potential fourth edition to the series, since Raimi wont necessarily have to move so far away from the fondly-held low production quality of the originals...
2. It has the Evil Dead's gore with Hollywood money behind it
I've ...

AICN head honcho Harry Knowles saw an early cut of DRAG ME TO HELL, the new Sam Raimi picture at the SXSW and went absolutely crazy for it...
This isn't a debatable film experience. There is no question about what happened tonight. This wasn't a nostalgic affair. There's no shrugged shoulders or indifferent souls that exited that theater tonight. What we all experienced was a resounding thunderous splitting of the Earth around us experience tonight. There was no spattering of applause, no isolated screams... this wasn't just me acting like a ninny, but 1200 hundred people screaming, shrieking and being shown for the namby pamby bitches that we were in the face of DRAG ME TO HELL!

What we saw tonight was a masterpiece of American Horror to the Planet Earth!
As did the audience...
People throughout the PARAMOUNT were exclaiming phrases like, "I've never screamed in terror at a movie in my life until tonight!" And these exclamations were legion. As the final moment of the film concluded - It was a sonic assault of cheers, screams, hoots & hollars and there was this swoop of wind as people leapt from their seats to signal approval of the highest degree. THIS WAS SAM ...

I actually think Sam Raimi is a little further along in pre-production on SPIDER-MAN 4 than he lets on to IGN this weekend and I translate the "earliest stages" comment referring more to finalising the script elements they already have in place rather than just beginning work on writing a new movie.

They have a release date now, May 6th 2011... things are starting to get serious now for Spidey's fourth installment.

Raimi claims he is closing in on villain/villains, one of whom thanks to Nikki Finke we already know was offered to actor Mickey Rourke, who had to turn it down due to his commitment on IRON MAN 2. As we know Raimi has mentioned before he has wanted to include Morbius The Living Vampire in the franchise to add a supernatural element, so it's not too hard of a stretch to think Rourke's was offered that role, as the physical resemblance is strong.

Now it will be interesting to see if it was a case of that's the only actor Raimi wanted for that part and without him they have no character, or whether it will be offered elsewhere.

We should also take into consideration the progression of Dr. Curt Connors as played by ...

Sam Raimi's first real return to horror (we don't count THE GIFT now-a-days do we?) tackles the financial economic crisis, surprisingly. I never thought Raimi or the genre would ever touch such relevant matters. Ah, nostalgia for the happier days when it was just about teenagers wanting to get laid.

Where people weren't worried about keeping a roof over their heads.

Sadly, the hook isn't really enough. There's almost a Saturday Night Live sketch vibe about it, the absurdness of being cursed for turning down someone's mortgage extension. All it would take is a joke and a laughter track and it would be a timely and quite funny parody. BRAVO!

But as a movie, I can't take this movie at all seriously... why would a demon need to go through the applications process for a mortgage extension? DUMB!

OR SEE IT IN HD HERE.

But it's not aimed at me is it? The PG-13 slapped rating, the watered down post-SPIDER-MAN Sam Raimi is reaching out to a different generation to me.

Has he forgotten his roots? Where's Bruce Campbell and a chainsaw when you need him?

A Raimi flick titled DRAG ME TO HELL, deserves better.

UPDATED:

E! Entertainment have confirmed a February 14th scoop that Scarlett Johansson will play Black Widow, the soviet spy who has a good side in IRON MAN 2.

The role firmly sets her up for future movies, including THE AVENGERS in 2012.

Nikki Finke claims Johansson screen-tested for the role at the beginning of the year but lost out to Emily Blunt, but now Blunt is travelling with Jack Black's Gulliver, they went back to her and offered Johansson the part.

Physically she's not right, her acting style only suits love triangle drama's from what I've seen... it's kinda like asking Marilyn Monroe to play TOMB RAIDER.

Blunt was just right for the role... Johansson may be out of her depth here. When an actress like Eliza Dushku lobbied so hard for the role, I think Favreau dropped the ball on this one.

A further update, Variety adds that Rourke will be playing both Whiplash and Crymson Dynamo, some kind of mixing of two villains.

END OF UPDATE...

"A significant" higher offer from Marvel than the $250,000 that was originally put on the table has secured the signature of Mickey Rourke for IRON MAN 2 according to Nikki Finke.

Holding out for a better deal, just as Samuel L. Jackson ...

Iranian born Hossein Amini will be writing the new Jack Ryan movie, the fifth involving the Tom Clancy created character for Paramount Pictures which is now 100% officially being made as an origin tale. It's also the first in the cannon not based on a Clancy novel and will be completely un-related to any of the previous movies.

It's a complete reboot basically.

It was rumored a while back that after the return to stardom of Harrison Ford that an older Ryan tale was being favoured but that no longer seems to be the case. Sam Raimi is also officially no longer involved according to The Hollywood Reporter, though I think we have known that for a while now.

New writers being hired for big budget movies in Hollywood are nothing new, in fact it's the expected working practice. It's actually a rarity that a screenplay gets crafted by one single writer all the way through it's production, especially in regards to comic book movies.

Which is why you shouldn't panic to hear that SPIDER-MAN 4 has got a new writer to replace James Vanderbilt (ZODIAC). Only after the fourth or fifth new writer (i.e. HANCOCK) has jumped on board, should we then start to panic...

The Hollywood Reporter say Pulitzer winning Playwright (for his 2007 play Rabbit Hole) David Lindsay-Abaire is now in charge of writing duties. He is known for his character driven plays and characters living on the outskirts of society (perfect!) and has credit on the animated movie ROBOTS and the upcoming INKHEART.

The hiring mirrors the kind of writer they used earlier in the series when dramatic screenwriter Alvin Sargent and Pulitzer prize winning author Michael Chabon wrote SPIDEY 2 and churned out the best film of the series.

The trades once again say Sam Raimi, Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst will all return.

MTV have released a couple of new images from Sam Raimi's first non-superhero movie in eight years and his first pure genre horror movie since the EVIL DEAD franchise ended, with next May's release DRAG ME TO HELL.

The self described "spook-a-blast" movie stars Alison Lohman as the victim of a supernatural curse cast upon her by an older Eastern European woman who was defied and humiliated by others.

Raimi tells the site...
This script was one I wrote with my brother many years ago, but we couldn't get the money to make it with the director we wanted at the time. I decided it would be a great change for me to get back to the basics of filmmaking, a chance to work with a smaller budget and challenge myself with the more old-fashioned ways — not being able to afford a crane every day, covering five or six pages of material every day, back to those basics of less luxurious filmmaking. I thought that would be refreshing.

More detailed summary of the plot...
This is the story of a woman, Alison Lohman, who is very much in love with Justin Long's character. She makes a sinful choice so she can be with the ...

Matt here…

Sam Raimi has teased us with an Evil Dead IV or an Evil Dead remake forever it seems but now might we finally have some progresses on the continuing adventures of Ash?

But you should brace yourself, because this idea is pretty far out. Producer Don Carmody (responsible for the Assault on Precinct 13 remake and Chicago) and his pals are in talks with Raimi over bringing the Broadway show The Evil Dead: The Musical to the big screen.

Conceived by George Reinblatt, Christopher Bond, Frank Cipolla and Melissa Morris, the camp stage interpretation of Raimi’s cult classic horror trilogy was originally mounted in Toronto and Montreal and has since gone off-Broadway.

Original directors Bond and choreographer Hinton Battle are lined up to co-direct the film version, which will be presented in 3-D.

Featuring songs such as “I’m Not A Killer” and “Look Who’s Evil Now”, the stage version featured an audience-participation area known as the “splatter zone”.
The movie will be shot in 3-D next Spring in Toronto as long as "serious rights issues" can be resolved.

Some of the original cast members of the musical will be asked back according to Screen Daily.

Hopefully, we won't be saying "What the fuck was that" if ...

Nikki Finke at her Deadline Hollywood Daily blog claims that Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi have both signed on to return for another Spider-Man movie, despite claims that both were ready to quit the successful and profitable franchise.

She also claims that previous reports of Spider-Man 4 and 5 being shot back-to-back are absolutely correct.

Kirsten Dunst has yet to agree on a return, though Finke believes the Mary Jane Watson character won't be re-cast if she declines the offer. Presumably the storyline involving Gwen Stacy will be progressed in the two movies, with or without Mary Jane.

Earlier this year, Zodiac scribe James Vanderbilt handed in the script for Spider-Man 4 which Finke believes will begin production next fall for a May 2011 release.

She also hints that Dr. Curt Connors will transform into The Lizard and will be the main villain of the next film, something that I think everyone agrees is the logical choice for the next film.

Tom Cruise is still on the hunt for his next project, which The Hollywood Reporter say could be the movie Sleeper, an adaptation of the DC/Wildstorm comic property setup at Warner Bros.

Sam Raimi is on board to produce but at the moment not direct.

Written by Ed Brubaker with art by Sean Phillips, "Sleeper," which ran from 2003-05, centers on an operative whose fusion with an alien artifact makes him impervious to pain and allows him to pass it on to others through skin contact. He is placed undercover in a villainous organization by an intelligence agency and falls for a member of the group, named Miss Misery.
The trades also say Cruise's next movie could be The Tourist, the thriller he joined just last week.

Both Cruise and Raimi have said to be big fans of the book and have closely watched the developments of the rights to the series over the years which is said to have complicated rights issues. After the problems WB had on Watchmen, they are desperate to make sure all the legal ends and rights are tied up for this one.

They are eying the project as a potential franchise.

Yet another superhero project for Sam Raimi, this time over at Disney where he will produce The Transplants - an action adventure pitch from Adam Jay Epstein and Andrew Jacobsen, two writers who co-wrote Not Another Teen Movie.

Disney are keeping stum on the high-concept plot though The Hollywood Reporter have heard it described "as a four-quadrant ensemble superhero story with a comedic bent".

The deal for the pitch is said to be in the high six figures. Epstein and Jacobsen had planned to pitch the idea as a comic book but Disney exec Kristin Burr see's huge potential in this project as a film.

It probably goes without saying that this is the first Raimi/Disney project in history - two names I never thought I would ever see together.

We will have more on this as it develops, but call me intrigued at this point.

If this news is true, then we can expect some big movement on the Spider-Man franchise at the end of 2008/beginning of 2009.

Laura Zisken, the producer of the Spidey movies at Columbia/Sony has told theatre owners in California and Nevada that a fourth movie in the series is hoped to be released in May 2011.

She also confirms that James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) has yet to turn his script in, the part of the proccess that will be vital in keeping both director Sam Raimi and stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. If the script is below par or is disagerable with them, then that's it for those three... they no longer have any committments with the franchise.

The Spider-Man series has made over $2.5 billion worldwide and is the most success modern day cinematic franchise. With or without those trio, Spider-Man will be continuing for a very long time indeed. It is the new James Bond franchise of films.

Again, Sam Raimi is attaching himself to everything but Spider-Man 4. At least his fifth or sixth new project since his last movie, Variety say the talented visual helmer has signed on to direct THE GIVEN DAY - an adaptation of a Dennis Lehane novel which reunites him with Columbia Pictures.

Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone and the upcoming Martin Scorsese film Shutter Island are all based on Lehane's crime writings. The Given Day, his latest novel won't be published until September.

"The Given Day" is set in 1919 Boston, with the city in turmoil as soldiers are returning home from WWI, having brought back an epidemic of Spanish influenza. Attempts to unionize the police department have set the stage for a historic strike and two cops take center stage.
Raimi says...
"While it deals with many of the same themes as (Lehane's) earlier work, it is also his most ambitious book, tying events of a century ago to the subjects we struggle with today," Raimi said.
Cool. Both Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone are two of the best crime movies of this decade, Lehane seems to touch on characters and a gritty side of the world that we haven't seen in the movies ...

Contrary to reports we've heard from the last few weeks, director Sam Raimi claims that screenwriter James Vanderbilt has not yet turned in his first draft for the fourth Spider-Man movie claiming it's still a few months away from completion.

However he does give his strongest hint yet that he very much wants to say on for the next movie.
"James Vanderbilt is writing the script and I'm excited to read it. I think it's going to be done in a few months," Raimi told us, adding, "I'm hoping it's as great as our discussions were about it and I'm hoping it feels right for me because I love Spider-Man. I'm hoping I'm well rested enough to embrace it and I'm hoping Sony wants me to do it. If all of those things come together, I would love to do it. There are a lot of unknowns about the future."
He also mentions he hates the idea of re-casting anyone from the series, hoping that Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, Bryce Dallas Howard, J.K. Simmons and the rest of the crew will return for more movies. As I've said before, Raimi will be back as long as he is guaranteed the same kind of ...
