Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller have teased us with a Sin City 2 start date once every six months or so for the past four years, so forgive me for holding my breath at the latest scoop that claims a sequel to the black-and-white 2005 ensemble noir favourite is close to becoming a reality, because with this series it's kind of the case that i'll believe it when I see it.

Mania spoke exclusively with producer Stephen L'Heureux of Solipsist Films who claims Sin City 2 will begin production in the latter half of 2010 and interestingly it will be based on an original screenplay written by Frank Miller and won't be adapted from the currently unfilmed Sin City graphic novels such as A Dame To Kill For, which was long spoken of as the plan.
Not using A Dame To Kill For seems crazy. With Miller's
wacko creative mindset right now, can he
afford to chuck away such great material?
After the disastrous Miller written and directed movie The Spirit last year, and to be brutally honest, his less than stellar creative output in the last ten years in all mediums, maybe we should be worried by Miller writing this. He seems to have ...

I was kinda pinning my hopes on Newcastle born Neil Marshall (The Descent, Dog Soldiers) to helm Predators after he came into the mix last month, but according to Harry Knowles, writer/producer Robert Rodriguez has had his eye on Nimrod Antal (Vacancy) for a while and it's no surprise to him that Rodriguez has confirmed his appointment this week.

According to Rodriguez, he is going to have a very "hands on" approach to his producing capacity at Troublemaker Studios (with 20th Century Fox financing), and it reminds him of the close collaboration he had with Frank Miller on making Sin City. Though remember Rodriguez mostly directed Sin City so that's a strange comment and one that if I was Antal, I would be worried he was going to take over my picture.

I have no way of classifying this picture as of yet (is it a sequel/prequel/reboot or what?) but Rodriguez does say it “still involves a very intense group of people stranded on a Predator planet discovering unspeakable horrors (that are not always from outside their group). So like the original movie, the title does have a double meaning.”

UPDATE:

Just as this was to ready to post, news has flitered through from Bloody Disgusting that Neil Marshall (The Descent, Dog Soldiers, Doomsday) is in talks to direct Rodriguez's script for Predators at 20th Century Fox.

The movie is on the fast track looking for a July 2010 release.
If you hang around nerd circles these days, you might have heard rumors that a remake or sequel to Predator is in the works, and that a prequel to Alien is also in development. If you hang around nerd circles, you’ve probably also already encountered some debate between those who want to hang the money-hungry producers for trying to financially and artistically rape the two franchises and those who just can’t help but be curious about either of the two projects in the off chance that a deft hand at directing causes them to be watchable. But do any of these projects have any chance at existing, firstly, and then secondly, surviving?

Let’s just go over what we are dealing with here. The Alien project, though first rumored to be a remake, is apparently now a prequel film about the origins of the creature. The Predator project was first rumored to be a remake ...

You probably noticed my small dig at Robert Rodriguez late last week, suggesting that he should get around to actually making movies rather than simply talking about making them but it's not entirely his fault I guess. When you look at the unfortunate situations he has had to deal with regarding studio indecisions over Sin City 2, Red Sonja and Barbarella, he is not really the one to blame as to why the stuff he talked about previous hasn't so far panned out.

Or simply put, I'm willing to give him a break and actually report on what he has to say this time. AICN got a chance to question Rodriguez over the weekend on what exactly the situation is with this new Predator movie (is it a reboot, sequel, who is directing, etc) and exactly what involvment Rodriguez will have with the picture.

Rodriguez confirmed that he got a call from 20th Century Fox's co-President of production Alex Young, who stumbled across a dusty 15 year old treatment titled Predators, a movie which Rodriguez planned as a sequel to the original film (which I believe totally dismissed the sequels) and was at one time the priority one for the helmer.

Rodriguez says...

When Universal balked at the idea of a remake to Barbarella, Robert Rodriguez went to Warner Bros. and directed an out and out kids movie titled Shorts. You know, like his previous films Spy Kids and The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl, they are made for his own kids who otherwise wouldn't be able to see what Daddy does for a living (i.e. Planet Terror, Sin City).

And well, let's be thankful that those kids, won't be kids forever. Please let this be the last kids movie you make Rob, because I can't imagine anyone outside of your family, regardless if they aged 7 or 77, would want to see this...

As usual, Rodriguez wrote, directed, edited, produced and provided the visual effects and cinematography all by himself. Though having his name so heavily attached to this isn't something I would go and shout about.

Look for it August 7th.

Variety say his next picture is NERVERACKERS, a futuristic science fiction noir that he is making over at Dimension.

Rodriguez of PLANET TERROR, SIN CITY, FROM DUSK TILL DAWN and SPY KIDS fame will write and direct the picture which has a release date of April 16th 2010.
Set in 2085, the story centers on a character named Joe Tezca who is part of an elite unit dispatched to quell a crime wave in a theoretically perfect future society.
Yes that is another high profile director doing sci-fi!

So if SIN CITY 2 happens this year as some of those involved in the first movie liked us to believe towards the end of 2008, then you have to believe it will be a solo project from Frank Miller.

We told you as much on Jan 1st 2008, the moment ALIEN VS. PREDATOR: REQUIEM failed to light up the box office that a full reboot of both franchises was inevitable.

Now we are hearing word from Bloody Disgusting's "trusted sources" that Robert Rodriguez is on board to produce for Fox with his Troublemaker Studios but probably won't direct (which means the project might actually get made unlike most of those Rodriguez has his name currently attached too).

No writer is on board yet but we do have a pitch...
"In the reboot a team of commandoes face down a mysterious race of vicious monsters."
The news is there won't just be one Predator but TWO! So much for man vs. alien!

Rodriguez, if I remember correctly wrote a screenplay for a PREDATOR movie set on his alien homeworld which was rejected as being "too expensive" before 20th Century Fox decided to go with Paul W.S. Anderson's take of a battle between the juggernauts Alien and Predator.

If that script is still lying around, maybe, just maybe, Rodriguez might push for that to be used and come into the director's chair. I love the original PREDATOR movie but I look at actors like The Rock, I ...

Frank Miller is in the U.K. promoting THE SPIRIT and during the same junket OWF attended (which we can't talk about yet), IGN Movies got out of Miller that he is hoping SIN CITY 2 will film in April.

He tells the site the script is written and if all the pieces come together he will be filming the movie in a similar circumstance as the original, with the help of his pal and filmmaking mentor Robert Rodriguez.

In September, Miller voiced similar sentiments about a return to SIN CITY.

Back in December 2006, Miller cast Angelina Jolie for one of the main roles in A DAME TO KILL FOR, the major unused story from Miller's original graphic novels which is seen as a shoe-in for the sequel. When she got pregnant and other pieces never came together for the movie, it was delayed.

Hopefully Miller will give her a call again. Could you imagine anyone else being better suited to the title?

Previously, SIN CITY 2 and 3 were to shoot back-to-back. Hopefully once THE SPIRIT is out of the way we can here more about exactly what's going down.

The more I see of THE SPIRIT, the more disastrous this movie truly looks unfortunately. At one time we use to get a lot of press releases concerning this film and a lot of fanboy's wanting to know how the movie was going to turn out, with words of genuine excitement and anticipation bursting out from each sentence.

That's simply not the case anymore and it hasn't been since around the Con when we got some real good glimpses of how this movie is going to turn out. UGO have released two new posters from the movie today...

Some more Frank Miller news comes from the guys at BadTaste who say that in a Q & A session, Miller told the world that he and Robert Rodriguez are "close" on beginning work on SIN CITY 2.
I can't talk about my projects, because I don't believe a movie is real until I see the title on the screen. There are many things that can go wrong. But I can tell you that I'm very close to begin 'Sin City 2' with Robert Rodriguez. We have to arrange a few things and we'll be back in action.
Wait, so THE SPIRIT isn't actually a sequel ...

On Thursday, we heard that Brett Ratner had been offered the chance to direct the new CONAN reboot over at Nu Image but today Latino Review offer us some light at the end of the tunnel and a glimmer of hope that he may not end up with the gig.

The site tell us that Ratner has indeed met with the producers behind the film but has not yet been selected to direct. The process is still on-going and they have met and are still to meet several other directors, the names of which they have also managed to get their hands on...

Neil Marshall (THE DESCENT, DOG SOLDIERS, DOOMSDAY)

We have heard Marshall was interested in this property before, his movies certainly have the feeling of a 80's mentality about them. I wouldn't mind seeing this guy get the chance to do this actually.

James McTeigue (V FOR VENDETTA, upcoming NINJA ASSASSIN)

The pet prodigy of The Wachowski's, McTeigue has less experience than some of the names on the list and I honestly don't believe he has yet directed a movie he hasn't been nurtured through but you can't deny his great eye for visuals. Not sure about his structure though, but he has ...

Rose McGowan, Robert Rodriguez and director Douglas Aarniokoski showcased Red Sonja at Comic-Con with an early teaser poster and some artwork for the movie which is heading for a 2009 release.

You may recall this is the second attempt at a Rodriguez/McGowan team-up post-Grindhouse, as Universal dumped the Barbarella remake when they were unsure of the box office talents of McGowan.

The early poster is below, pretty ironically the THIRD POSTER this week to have a vixen lead licking blood in a sultry fashion...

And the second has a feeling of 300 about it...

Things /Film and AICN learned from the Con about Red Sonja...

Rodriguez can't direct the movie because of a prior contractual agreement he had with the Weinsteins, for his next movie to be for them. Which is why he chose his frequent first assistant director Douglas Aarniokoski for the gig, though Rodriguez will shoot many of the scenes and "conveniently" take a producer's credit.

So basically, he is co-directing but legally he won't be directing - to get over the DGA issue.

Rodriguez has a deep love for the source material.

They are currently scouting locations for where to shoot the movie.

McGowan will start her sword training for the role this week. A kinetic ...

Universal weren't so keen on Rodriguez's choice of his fiance Rose McGowan to lead the Barbarella remake, so the director and his muse have jumped ship to Milleniunm/New Image who have greenlit a new re-imagining of Red Sonja, the fantasy sword and sorcery heroine.

She is a character that exists in the same universe as their soon to be revived Conan property and will be an epic film on a similar scale. This project is further along than you might think as shooting is pencilled in for October according to Variety.

"Red Sonja" is based on the character created by Robert E. Howard and adapted for Marvel Comics by Roy Thomas. Story centers on a young girl overcoming tragedy to become the most feared woman warrior of all time as she seeks vengeance on those who destroyed her family and discovers a larger purpose for her unearthly powers.
Rodriguez ain't directing this one, it will be Douglas Aarniokoski who in 2000 helmed the STV fantasy film Highlander: End Game but he is well known to Rodriguez having worked as assistant director with him on Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Spy Kids and The Faculty.

I can't wait until the day when Robert Rodriguez's kids have grown into full adults, maybe then - just maybe - he will stop making these crappy kids movies.

That's not to say I or anyone else should be ruling his filmography and I wouldn't mind it at all if he was actually good at helming kids movies but the simple fact is he isn't. Kids movies don't suit him.

Variety report today that his next movie will be SHORTS, a kids comedy that will star (in the order they list) Jon Cryer, William H. Macy, Leslie Mann, James Spader, Jimmy Bennett, Kat Dennings and Devon Gearhart.
"Shorts" is set in a suburb where all the houses look the same and everyone works for Black Box, manufacturer of the ultimate communication and do-it-all gadget. Chaos follows when an 11-year-old boy is hit in the head with a rainbow-colored rock that grants wishes to anyone who holds it.

Rodriguez is serving as his own director of photography, editor and visual effects supervisor.
So it's the director we have seen from Spy Kids and The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl rather than the director of Sin City and Planet Terror.

Shame... but then again was anyone ...

Spending the best part of the last 12 months trying to get his remake of Barbarella off the ground with his fiance Rose McGowan, director Robert Rodriguez may have found another project that the Planet Terror duo can work on.

It's a t.v. show titled WOMAN IN CHAINS and will be as exploitative and provocative as the title suggests...

McGowan will only be one of five females in chains, in the show which according to AICN contains "Sadistic Guards, Cafeteria Hosedowns, Mud Wrestling, and Violent Vendettas" and is once again set in the 1970' s and is a homage to a Grindhouse style of cinema.

The show was conceived by Joshua Miller and M.A. Fortin and is being shopped around various networks. HBO recently picked up a deal to do an American remake of the British prison drama Bad Girls... this should drum up the same kind of interest even if it's a little more out there.

Interesting and hell I'd see anything that has Rose McGowan in chains but when is Rodriguez going to return to being interesting again... and maybe follow-up his Sin City?

Rose McGowan has finally come out of the woodwork to update us on the Barbarella situation.

She tells MTV that it was all just a pack of lies and that the studio never had any qualms about her starring in the film. Really? Hmmm. You can read the original article we wrote about Universal's posturing over the film HERE.

Here's what she said to the site...
[The news that I was out] was really irritating because I know all the people over there and obviously it wasn’t true. It was very malicious and there was no proof,” McGowan said of the rumors. “Oftentimes these things have basis in truth but this didn’t. I have contracts to prove it.”

“Half of the sets have been built. The costumes are done,” the actress confessed, adding with a laugh that she’s “even got my spaceships. I’ve got part of a spaceship built for me!”

“[‘Barbarella’] wouldn’t be able to be finished before June which is when the next strike might happen,” McGowan said of delays in the face of a possible SAG strike. “It’s a longer shoot.”
Unless you have been living under a rock, you will know McGowan's boyfriend Robert Rodriguez will helm the film - if it ...

I know a lot of my fellow Brits were really bummed out when the Weinsteins yanked the original theatrical back-to-back cut of Grindhouse from U.K. cinema's, only to then release Death Proof and Planet Terror singularly and without all the cool extra's (trailers, scratchy reels, etc) some six months later.

And with the lackluster region 2 dvd release and the ultra and ridiculously priced Japanese boxset (which is the only way you will see the original cut at home), I'm aware that many of you have still yet to taste the greatness that was the Grindhouse experience or even the films by themselves.

Well I have some good news for you even if it has come one year too late.

Grindhouse in it's original form is touring virtually all parts of the U.K. for special night showings. There's not much excuse now because there is bound to be a cinema near you.

How many of you are going to see this.? I know I am, especially if it stays priced the same as a normal theatre ticket.

I am not kidding when I saw watching Grindhouse was one of the top movie going experiences of my life...

I have a feeling this might be our last update on Sin City 2 for a while. Frank Miller has responded to the comments that were posted yesterday from Michael Madsen who said he doubted the film would ever happen.

From Rotten Tomatoes...
"Sin City 2 is still likely to happen," says Miller, "just not right away. The script is written and Robert and I are raring to go, but it looks like I'm going to be doing The Spirit first and Robert's going to be doing Barbarella first."
No need to panic then guys. Miller & Rodriguez will finish off their projects and then get right to work on Sin City 2. Hopefully.

This delay might turn out as being a positive one for all of us hoping that Angelina Jolie will star in the movie because her slate is full right now and with news of her wanting to take a break from acting for a while, a late 2007 or early 2008 production start might suit her better.

Confirmation has come through on yesterday's story that Robert Rodriguez is indeed in talks over shooting a live-action movie based on the 60's cartoon The Jetsons for Warner Brothers. The confirmation comes from The Hollywood Reporter through Coming Soon.

Harry Knowles at AICN called up the director to find out more...
Warners brought him a whole host of things to take a look at, and the one he was curious about was THE JETSONS, he has not signed to make it his next film, but he is curious about the project, and depending on how the script comes along, he may or may not make the film.
There's more to this story folks. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rodriguez has another movie lined up...

The director has apparently held talks with Universal big-wigs over helming the movie Land of the Lost based on the 1970's childrens fantasy series of the same name. Will Ferrell is said to be attached.

What's interesting of course about his return to working for movie studio's is that two years ago he left the Director's Guild of America because they wouldn't allow Frank Miller to receive a directorial credit for the movie. Apparently there is a get-out clause which will ...

I respect Latino Review and their insider knowledge far more than most other websites who claim the same thing. These guys seem to know what they are talking about, and time and time again their scoops have been deemed accurate (such as the whole saga with Katie Holmes/Maggie Gyllenhaal in The Dark Knight).

So here is what they are reporting today, and some of this stuff is just WACKY but with a nice Latin flavour...

The biggest scoop and certainly the wackiest of the bunch is that they claim Robert Rodriguez won't be shooting Sin City 2 as his next movie. Instead he will be making a live-action version of The Jestons cartoon which will probably be another movie for his son after he made The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl for him. I still find this hard to believe though because Rodriguez has done nothing but talk about Sin City for months and he recently showed some footage to Joe Carnhan, so surely Sin City is his next move?

Next they are telling us that the upcoming Street Fighter movie that is focusing on the female character of Chun-Li will star Jessica Biel in the title role. Well for a ...
