As the trailer suggested, Richard Kelly's third preposterous and pseudo-intellectual offering The Box takes the simple premise of the button pushing Richard Matheson written morality play and turns it into a multi-layered mind-fuck that is strictly not for everyone. That's the general consensus from most of the reviews, good or bad (mostly bad) over at Rotten Tomatoes.

At this point it would seem that Kelly is just too"out there" for a mainstream hit. He's got too many philosophical ideas to play around with in the stories he wants to tell and his upbringing (I'm guessing) on the works of Stanley Kubrick, Hitchcock's Vertigo and the writings of author Kurt Vonnegut have so influenced him that he won't ever control his instincts and tell a simple straight forward story from A-Z.
Frank Langella (left) can take all of Cameron Diaz's (right)
troubles away with a tax-free $1 million, if she
would only press the button. The catch: a stranger
who she doesn't know, will perish.
I warned Kelly that he couldn't carry on his ways over two years ago (jeez, this movie has taken a long time to get into theatres... what does that tell you?) and that simplicity was what his battered and bruised ...

The weekend after I Am Legend opened to $77 million domestic for Warner Bros., we all knew a further continuation of this series was inevitable. The movie was Will Smith's highest opening of all time and was liked by critics and audiences a like, with his performance singled out for huge praise.

Those combinations usually = sequel.

Though, not quite in this case as bringing back Will Smith for the logical continuation of the story (a.k.a 28 Weeks Later) can't quite be done. So the only way to get Smith back is to sacrifice the forward momentum of the series and go the PREQUEL route.

Which was yesterday confirmed by director Francis Lawrence at the Con...
"Yes, yes, absolutely, we're actually trying to crack that. We're trying to figure out some ideas for it, but yes, it would be a prequel."

"In the prequel, it's slightly different because it's earlier. We were three years later so we did a lot of research into the way nature would have sort of overtaken the city, with the cracks in the streets and the weeds, so if it's just back earlier, it'll be slightly different so the approach will be different. We're not positive of the time of ...

The revitalization of the writings of Richard Matheson continues.

The Hollywood Reporter say the Matheson-scripted Twilight Zone episode Death Ship has been picked up by Summit Entertainment and will be filmed as a $30 million budget feature.

It will be re-titled as The Countdown for 3:10 to Yuma and 2 Fast 2 Furious screenwriter Michael Brandt to helm as his debut film.

Brandt will also work on the script for the movie with his long time partner Derek Haas who co-wrote the above mentioned movies and also the upcoming adaptations of Wanted and The A-Team with Brandt.

Death Ship is a pretty cool episode (all of Matheson's were) and it once again played around with the sci-fi writer's usual theme of 'what is reality' and our own sense of who we really are. The episode guest starred Jack Klugman (Quincy M.E.) as one of three space travellers in the year 1997 who find a similar spaceship to their own crashed on an alien planet, which carries the dead bodies of themselves!

You can find the rest of the episode HERE.
Anyone else picture Andy Serkis as the Mason character?
Although maybe not as cool or as fun as the Matheson scripted episode The Box which Richard ...

Review by Matt Holmes

[rating: 3.5]

Out of the three adaptations of Richard Matheson's truly amazing tale of the last man on Earth who survives only on routine and habit in a world where vampires rule the night, this Will Smith blockbuster action vehicle is by far my favourite.

I Am Legend is better than The Last Man On Earth. It's leaps and boundaries better than Charlton Heston's The Omega Man. And for 2/3rd's of the movie, it is the best psychological dramatic horror flick of the year. If such a genre exists.

It's still not a patch on the original novel and it's far from a 5 star movie. There's plenty of problems that will niggle and gnaw at you but it's dark and sombre tone makes this a fascinating Christmas release and a tour-de-force performance from a single leading man, very reminiscent of Tom Hanks' Oscar nominated performance in Cast Away.

It's rare the Academy ...
