As the trailer suggested, Richard Kelly's third preposterous and pseudo-intellectual offering The Box takes the simple premise of the button pushing Richard Matheson written morality play and turns it into a multi-layered mind-fuck that is strictly not for everyone. That's the general consensus from most of the reviews, good or bad (mostly bad) over at Rotten Tomatoes.

At this point it would seem that Kelly is just too"out there" for a mainstream hit. He's got too many philosophical ideas to play around with in the stories he wants to tell and his upbringing (I'm guessing) on the works of Stanley Kubrick, Hitchcock's Vertigo and the writings of author Kurt Vonnegut have so influenced him that he won't ever control his instincts and tell a simple straight forward story from A-Z.
Frank Langella (left) can take all of Cameron Diaz's (right)
troubles away with a tax-free $1 million, if she
would only press the button. The catch: a stranger
who she doesn't know, will perish.
I warned Kelly that he couldn't carry on his ways over two years ago (jeez, this movie has taken a long time to get into theatres... what does that tell you?) and that simplicity was what his battered and bruised ...

When Richard Nixon with a half torn off face comes to your door, asking if you received a package with a device that's got a red button on it that will cause death to someone unknown to you in return for a $1 million dollars reward, would you press it, or tell him to find someone else to do his dirty work?

That's the premise behind Richard Kelly's (Donnie Darko, Southland Tales) first attempt at a mainstream audience winner with The Box, an adaptation of Richard Matheson's short story "Button Button", previously an 80's Twilight Show episode and now a major motion picture starring James Marsden and Cameron Diaz.

On first viewing of the newly released trailer, I gotta say I'm hooked. I've always loved this concept, in a way it reminds me of a much more heightened and scary human experiment version of Deal or No Deal where you are really testing people's apparent necessity for money and how that builds and builds into their absolute greed as the stakes get higher and higher.

I like that Marsden and Diaz are beyond desperation for money to keep the roof on their heads, I like the narrative jump that he loses his job... but I ...

Last Friday news leaked that a sequel to Donnie Darko had been put into production without the acknowledgment or blessing of the character and film's creator and director Richard Kelly which it goes without saying had us all a little pissed.

But let's take a moment to feel for Kelly. He never asked for any of this, to see his original material be butchered with a sequel that he doesn't want and can do nothing about is really quite heartbreaking.

Kelly told this to /Film...
“To set the record straight, here’s a few facts I’d like to share with you all - I haven’t read this script. I have absolutely no involvement with this production, nor will I ever be involved,” writes Kelly. “I have no control over the rights from our original film, and neither I nor my producing partner Sean McKittrick stand to make any money from this film.”
Let's hope somehow this does not get made and if it does... let's hope it's so fucking rotten it never makes it to the theatre.

And that's coming from someone who NEVER wants to see movies fail but this project is so much out of studio greed, laziness and sheer disregard for the integrity ...

Believe it or not but in nine days time a sequel to Donnie Darko will begin shooting - a feature which has none of the cast or crew from the 2001 original involved and nor does it have the backing of the original film's writer/director Richard Kelly.

The film is titled S. Darko (????) and UK sales company Velvet Octopus will be shopping the film around Cannes, though Fox have already agreed to distribute in America. Unknown helmer Chris Fisher will direct the $10 million feature.
Daviegh Chase reprises her role as Donnie's younger sister. The cast for S. Darko also includes Ed Westwick (Son of Rambow, Gossip Girl), Briana Evigan (Step Up 2: The Streets) and Justin Chatwin (Dragonball).

The story picks up seven years after the first film when little sister Samantha Darko and her best friend Corey are now 18 and on a roadtrip to Los Angeles when they are plagued by bizarre visions.
Bizarre.
I really enjoyed the original movie and despite it's ambiguous ending, I really don't like the idea of a sequel - not least because of it's hastily made and is an obvious money hungry venture.

Donnie Darko made only 1/10th worldwide of the budget of this new low ...

The whole Internet community seem to be fully behind Richard Kelly on his latest project. I think we all want the "mainstream" horror flick The Box to recreate some of the buzz and excitement that we all thrived on back in 2001 when the original and imaginative Donnie Darko burst onto our screens (our small screens that is, how many of us actually saw it in theatres?).

After the shambolic time this guy had on Southland Tales and the mess that project turned into, we all want this enthusiastic director to succeed. I like this plot (in a nut shell - financially struggling couple get given a mysterious box which shoots out money every time the button is pushed but once that happens a stranger somewhere dies), I like his cast (Marsden, Diaz, Langella) and I like these photo's and I like what his intentions are...
"With The Box, I hope to make a more mainstream popcorn film...We don't feel like we are watering ourselves down," Kelly assures.
And I think we are all happy for Kelly to do that at this point. He's got a $30 million budget and a cool and socially relevant idea from a great original short story from ...

When desperate couple Cameron Diaz and James Marsden open this mysterious box given to them by a stranger (Frank Langella) all their dreams and worries seem to have gone. Everytime they press the button inside the box, enough money comes out to save their son who is failing from ill health, only there's a small catch. Everytime they press the button and money comes out - someone somewhere in the world will die.

It's the next movie from Richard Kelly, the young and ambitious director of the pretty cool DONNIE DARKO but the hideously reviewed SOUTHLAND TALES (I just put my order in today for the DVD, I'm curious as hell to see it).

It's called THE BOX, and is based on a old twilight zone episode. It promises to to be the most straight out genre piece yet from Kelly and we have our first look at the mysterious box below...

This one is due out this year and after the disaster that was SOUTHLAND TALES, Richard Kelly's whole career in Hollywood pretty much resides with how well this movie goes down at the box office.
