The sizable failure of Baz Luhrmann's sweeping love story epic AUSTRALIA may have cost Stephen Soderbergh his leading man for his equally ambitious $30 million historical 3-D rock musical CLEO.

Variety report that Hugh Jackman has dropped out of talks for the film, presumably turned off by the reaction of AUSTRALIA and not wanting to put his career on the line by starring in another big budget risk for an unusual genre effort.

The trades say "inside scheduling conflicts" is the reason, which could equally be true. We know he is set to play Houdini on stage in 2011 and will want plenty of prep time for it which I've heard may also be shot as a movie at the same time.

Soderbergh now has the arduous task of finding a replacement for Jackman, he needs an actor with the same kind of presence, stature and acting chops who can also sing and dance to play opposite Catherine Zeta-Jones' Cleopatra. Not easy.

But that talks is for another time because the trades have gotten word that Ray Winstone, suddenly one of Britian's most in demand actors for big budget movies is in talks to play Julius Caesar. Wow, if you thought Winstone playing Beowulf ...

The casting is all but complete for 13, the Hollywood remake of a much liked psychological French noir thriller 13 TZAMETI which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival a few years.

Variety say Ray Liotta, Mickey Rourke, Ray Winstone, Jason Statham, Sam Riley and er, 50 Cent will star.

Riley ("Control") plays the title character, a young man who stumbles into an underground competition where the wealthy gamble on human beings in a Russian Roulette-like competition.

Rourke... will play a convict in a Mexican prison who is sold into the competition. Winstone... will play a competitor who has been sprung from a mental institution to participate; 50 Cent ("Righteous Kill") will play an employee assigned to escort Rourke's character to the bloody game.

Statham... plays a wealthy British man who bets on the competition and has a peculiar interest in one of the competitors. Liotta... will play a cop on the trail of the illegal game.
Seduced by the bigger budget, the bigger resources and no doubt the bigger wage... Gela Babluani, the writer/director of the original is back on board to do the same task. No word if this version will be black and white also.

I had never seen ...

Ray Winstone will replace Robert De Niro in The Edge of Darkness according to Variety.

You may recall, De Niro left the film some days into shooting after suffering from "creative differences", which haven't been fully disclosed.

Martin Campbell's movie, based on his own late 80's Brit mini-series marks Mel Gibson's first on screen return in six years as a detective whose daughter is shot dead at his home. Ray Winstone plays the operative who attempts to clean up the mess.

Danny Huston, Shawn Roberts and Boja Novakovic co-star.

Shooting is already well under-way in Massachusetts.

Discuss: Does anyone else feel like Ray Winstone has become the "go to guy" for any kind of adult themed crime/thriller? He has done a terrific job of pushing himself into the top tier of actors chosen for these films.

Fox Searchlight have put a halt to their adaptation of the popular 70's British crime series The Sweeney after discussions over it's potential worldwide appeal went a bit sour.

The movie was set to lense in a few short weeks with Ray Winstone (as the older veteran cop made famous by the late John Thaw) and Michael Fassbender (as the young partner) as detectives in the Flying Squad police unit.

But problems with...

A) The original show being an unknown quantity outside of the U.K.

B) Winstone and Fassbender as unproven box office draws.

has halted the film.

The plan is now to delay the production until next year when they might be able to find a bigger name duo, or at least one bigger name to star alongside the other in the film. I would suggest it's not necessarily Fassbender who will be dropped from the film because it's ok he is an unknown, it's the bigger star that needs to carry the film and although Winstone is a popular actor in the crime genre in the U.K. - he is not a proven leading actor.

Which is a shame because I think he would own this movie and I would rather see him in this ...

Indiana Jones... I always knew you would come walking back through my door.

But then again I don't feel like he ever left - it was Harrison Ford that I had missed. My copies of Raiders of the Lost Ark (one of my favourite films of all time), Temple of Doom and The Last Crusade (one of my most watched films of all time) I get round to viewing at least once a year - never getting old, always being the same entertaining films I always thought they were and with Indy, the bumbling hero - the guy who made archaeology cool and was the definition of the ultimate mortal hero.

He hurts, he bleeds, he shows emotion but always comes back for more. Because history demands it!

Indy has been with me all my life but it's Harrison Ford that disappeared. He was my childhood hero, the man who I would look out for in movies to give me guidance on how and often how not to live my life. Then something happened... just after Air Force One he disappeared, hardly to be seen again. He became miserable, age and life had finally caught up to him. He would only take on ...

Are we all ready? Harrison Ford's been wheeled out, Cate Blanchett has spent 3 days in Kiev practising her accent, Shia LaBeouf has finished grooming himself and George Lucas is ready with the cash register: it's Indy time!

The plot is predictably stupid for an Indiana Jones movie, it's 1957 and the aged archeologist has been kidnapped by commies and taken to a secret US military installation to identify an artefact he excavated years ago in a triple top-secret mission. Once the artefact (a really really old transparent, psychic and weirdly shaped skull that is sometimes magnetic, and sometimes attracts gold) is found we begin an all-important tug-of-war over this astounding object to decide the fate of the world!

Indiana Jones and the Selectively Magnetic Head... no... wait... Indiana Jones and the Shit-Looking Plastic Alien Brain... hang on, nearly there... Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is a fucking waste of time, a pointless ...

Review by Matt Holmes

I don't think any words that I can articulate will do this movie justice. Martin Scorsese has nailed it. The Departed truly has to be up their with any work the legendary director has ever done (no small statement), man you know I hate it that Scorsese's best work in years is the crime genre because contrary to what most critics say... he is much more than a crime director but fuck it, THIS FILM IS AWESOME.

Worried, anxious, sweating on this remake of the 2002 Hong Kong flick Infernal Affairs was I for many months but I should have known better when it was one of the greatest living directors at the helm. This is not a basic retread. It's not just a hack remake job for a quick buck which we are too often given with new sheens ...
