Two related stories hit the web yesterday at roughly the same time, both concerning the rapidly moving towards production Spider-Man 4.

First the truth bits...

27 year old British actress Romola Garai who played the older Saoirse Ronan part in Atonement has auditioned for an unspecified female lead role in the next web-slinging adventure of Peter Parker. The audition was taped, presumably as Raimi wasn't in town.

Immediately my mind turned to her as Black Cat but it could just as easy be a new possible love interest. Or if you look at her, could they possibly be contemplating re-casting Gwen Stacy?
Garai certainly has a bit of Gwen Stacy about her.
/film carry a link to The Observer where Garai reveals her audition...
"Love is at the root of everything good that has ever happened and will happen.” This phrase swam into focus as I moved up the escalator at Oxford Circus tube on Tuesday morning on my way to put myself “on tape” for a part in Spider-Man 4. This is the acting equivalent of the London Marathon in that it’s important to try your best as long as you understand that you aren’t going to win.
So onto the oddly coincided timing of a ...

I was worried when The Curious Case of Benjamin Button came out late last year that there was no longer anyhope for The Time Traveler's Wife, a romantic drama that astonishingly began production in September 2007 but we are only just now seeing a trailer for it. Not that I'm complaining that much about the aforementioned comparison, if The Curious Case of Benjamin Button ends up being the best adaptation of this story then I think we did pretty darn well out of it, don't you?.

Pretty amazingly well actually.

A couple of years before I heard about Eric Roth's screenplay for Benjamin Button coming into the hands of David Fincher, I read a book called The Time Traveler's Wife by debut novelist Audrey Niffenegger which I've told anyone that would care to listen is just about the greatest thing I've read in ages. The book like Benjamin Button, tackles the themes of an unusual passage of time on a relationship, unexplained science fiction, love during separation and the question of fatalism in our life and relationships.

It's not a coincidence I don't think that Brad Pitt originally bought the rights to the novel and before his break-up with Jennifer Aniston had planned to ...

If there’s a hard sell in our day to day lives it’s the concept of the heroic journalist, the character State of Play director Kevin MacDonald calls his ‘truth-teller’. The common snap judgement is journos equal sleaze, bombarded as we are with tabloids, weekly mags, blogs that seem less concerned with getting the facts straight than with cause célèbre. Somehow though, when we’re confronted with a journalist on screen, especially a die-hard newspaper man, there’s a tacit acceptance, even a desire, that this one is here to do the right thing.

The ultimate example of this is the godfather of filmic investigative journalism All The President’s Men, something to which State of Play aspires, but MacDonald and his talented, albeit partially last minute team muddy the waters with a murky layer of conflict of interest between friendship and getting to the truth.

Based on the BBC series of the same name the film transplants the action from Britain to the political corridors, and the common or garden streets, of Washington DC. Cal McCaffrey (Russell Crowe) is the senior metro reporter at the Washington Globe, an old school newspaper veteran, who investigates the murder of a young Washington aide in the office of ...

One of the better populist novels (it was on the Richard & Judy book club) I've read in recent years, THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE has been messed around by New Line/Warner Bros. so many times, I'm hesitant to report that it looks like it's coming out on August 14th in case I put a curse on it.

Hopefully the last few major delays were because of the change of ownership after New Line folded into Warner Bros, and it was a case of a whole new strategy team being on board rather than any problems with the actual film itself.

Eric Bana stars as a Chicago librarian who has a gene that causes him to involuntarily time travel to different points of his life, causing complications with his marriage to Rachel McAdams. Ron Livingston co-stars for FLIGHTPLAN director Robert Schwentke.

An awesome read, let's hope it translates.

Jon Favreau has confirmed to E! (via The Playlist) that 20th Century Fox have used their pre-agreed option from THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA to nab actress Emily Blunt for one of the their tentpoles, casting her in GULLIVER'S TRAVELS, the upcoming adventure comedy starring Jack Black.

So it's confirmed she is out as Black Widow, which really sucks because she was the perfect actress for the role but of course she can't be in two places at once.

Filming on IRON MAN 2 will begin in just over two months so Favreau is likely to already be deep into the process of finding her replacement....

Now that Emily Blunt is out, who should play Emily Blunt in IRON MAN 2?
( polls)

Scarlett Johansson was rumored a few weeks ago to replace Blunt. Her recent hair dye has also fuelled this speculation, though I can't help but feel she is no good for a superhero role. And imaging her doing a Russian accent is a dreadful worry.

DOLLHOUSE actress Eliza Dushku has lobbyed for the part on Howard Stern and would be a really solid choice...
"They’re doing Iron Man 2, and I’m so perfect for the Black Widow character, that they just need to get into ...

The whole shape of the crime thriller STATE OF PLAY changed when the FIGHT CLUB duo Edward Norton and Brad Pitt bailed out at the 11th hour just before filming was to begin and the juicy hook of a movie about two former best friends who are on the opposite ends of a hideous crime no longer had that initial spark of seeing two actors who we know have great chemistry back together on screen again.

Now we have Ben Affleck and Russell Crowe, who are both damn fine actors but that Norton/Pitt duo was what sold this movie for me for such a long time. Affleck and Crowe don't quite have the same chemistry.

Based on the excellent BBC T.V. mini-series from 2003, Universal Pictures adaptation of STATE OF PLAY has been co-written by two screenwriting heavyweights Matthew Michael Carnahan (THE KINGDOM, LIONS FOR LAMBS) and Tony Gilroy (MICHAEL CLAYTON, THE BOURNE series) and it follows a team of investigative reporters who work alongside a police detective to try to solve the murder of a congressman’s mistress.

Rachel McAdams, Jason Bateman, Helen Mirren, Robin Wright Penn, Viola Davis and Jeff Daniels make up the rest of what is an impressive cast.

At 66, Harrison Ford looks amazing for his age. BUT...

Is it not a little creepy to think of him making out with Rachel McAdams?

Variety say McAdams is in final talks to join MORNING GLORY, the new comedy from Roger Michell (NOTTING HILL, ENDURING LOVE) which is being produced by J.J. Abrams.

She is in talks to play an aspiring news producer who tries to save a failing morning show by getting control of its feuding anchors. Ford plays one of the feuding anchors and presumably there will be love triangle, though the trades don't mention it. Also presumably (I'm doing a lot of that here aren't I?), McAdams is in talks for the role previously held by Reese Witherspoon before she dropped out well before Harrison Ford jumped on board last week.

Aline Brosh McKenna (THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA) wrote the script, so maybe there is no rom-com element as that Anne Hathaway/Meryl Streep movie had little of it.

Now there's literally hundreds of SHERLOCK HOLMES film and t.v. adaptations but I doubt any of them featured a shirtless image of super sleuth from Baker Street. And if they did, I doubt that they ever looked as good as this...

Guy Ritchie's adaptation of the character is to go back to the very origins of Arthur Conan Doyle's novels where Holmes was depicted as a more than capable martial arts fighter, a sport which Downey Jr. himself is familiar with. The purposefully released image from Warner Bros. is a message to us that this Holmes adaptation will be different to every other.

The second official image from Warner Bros. show the detective with his sidekick Dr. Watson as played by Jude Law...

Rachel McAdams (as Holmes' love interest Irene Adler), Mark Strong (as the villain Blackwood) and the always great Eddie Marsan (as Insepc. Lestrade) co-star for the Nov. 20th 2009 movie.

No that's not me, unfortunately, as much as I would like to take this beauty for myself.

Rachel McAdams, at one time rumored to be Pepper Potts in IRON MAN (Gwyneth Paltrow's role) will finally get the chance to show us how much chemistry she can generate opposite Robert Downey Jr. as she has just been cast for the love interest in SHERLOCK HOLMES.

She will play the super sleuth's enigmatic love interest Irene Adler, a character who dates back to the 1891 novel "A Scandal in Bohemia", her one and only appearance though The Hollywood Reporter believe her deal here is a multi-film contract.

As we already know Mark Strong will be playing the movie's villain Blackwood and Jude Law is in talks to play the sidekick Dr. Watson. Holmes' most famous nemesis Prof. Moriarty MAY yet feature in the film as "the man behind it all" or a small cameo at the end to make way for a sequel.

Joel Silver produces, Guy Ritchie directs for Warner Bros. The new take on the character will depict Holmes' as more physically apt than ever before and less of the "stiff upper-lip" persona.

Two movies I can't wait to see this year are CHOKE and the adaptation of the awesome novel THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE, the latter movie especially.

And we have some cool news today about both movies. They have both been given release dates...

First up, THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE will open on June 6th in the U.S. going up against the always marketable Adam Sandler and his comedy YOU DON'T MESS WITH THE ZOHAN and the animated animal movie KUNG FU PANDA.

It's just about the only summer release slot the film could go for that wouldn't be eaten up by a big blockbuster though last year I NOW PROUNOUNCE YOU CHUCK AND LARRY showed just how much money there still is in an Adam Sandler vehicle ($120 million domestic).

THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE stars Eric Bana as involuntary time traveller who must cope with is disease whilst trying to enjoy his relationship with the love of his life Rachel McAdams. The film comes from FLIGHTPLAN director Robert Schwentke and we should now be close to seeing an actual trailer for this thing soon.

Also given a release is CHOKE, the Clark Gregg adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk's novel which was picked up by Fox Searchlight ...
