A press release sent out literally a few hours ago reports that screenwriter Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon, The Queen, The Damned United) will join the current James Bond writing team of Neal Purvis and Robert Wade who have brought us the last four movies in the series, going all the way back to The World is Not Enough in 1999.

It's the first real annoucement we have had for the new James Bond movie since Quantum of Solace opened last October to a very mixed response, though critics mostly enjoyed it.

Personally I dug the hell out of QOS, certainly the most kick-ass Bond movie of all time. It threw out the formula, brought back a sense of THE NOW to Bond movies and was quick, fast and exhilarating. It cut out the fat and drudge that we didn't need to see from this series anymore, and actually carried on an interesting story from the last film where things matter... Bond has to live with the consequences of his actions.

He doesn't get a clean slate everytime a new Bond song opens the credits. The pain of his past now haunts him, and any mistakes or carelessness he makes could be tragic (death of Fields in ...

"Almost a third of Bond's lovers have died", since Sean Connery began the longest running film series ever when he played 007 for the first time in the landmark 1962 film Dr. No reports a new study in The Times (via The Guardian) and "the mortality rate is on the rise".

The British newspaper has spent the last week or so watching the whole 22 film series and worked out that 51 of Bond's lovers have bit the dust, beginning with the third Bond movie Goldfinger with the golden muder of Jill Masterson.

Which is still probably the most shocking and effective Bond girl demise of them all. His lovers in the first two movies Dr. No and From Russia With Love got away scot free but "in Thunderball and You Only Live Twice, he looked on as two women were assassinated and another was devoured by piranhas".

(SPOILERS FOLLOW IF YOU HAVE YET TO SEE QUANTUM OF SOLACE)

I'm bringing this up because there's something about the new Bond series that I really enjoy and that's the consequences of Daniel Craig's actions and how it shapes and morphs his character. We aren't seeing Bond girl characters thrown into these movies for no other reason than ...

Available from Amazon U.K priced at $17.98 and Amazon U.S. (priced $25.99)

What better place to start than with the theme tune? Chris Cornell’s “You Know My Name” may have been much maligned, but at least it was in the grand tradition of using someone with a giant voice who could pull off the grandeur required of a Bond theme. Jack White’s squawk is inadequate at the best of times, and even Alicia Keyes’ usually pristine vocal work is sullied by some awful lyrics- I’m all for rock, but the necessary grubbiness of the genre is not befitting of a big-band style theme tune. But you can say one thing for it- at least they kept Meg White’s Animal-style drumming hidden away.

For the second time in a week I find myself reviewing a movie that seems to channel the spirit of Michael Bay, preferring flashy action sequences to actual substance, and as much as Bond is often about the increasingly inventive ways Bond can get out of sticky situations or defeat a wrong-un, this time I cant help but feel they’ve gone too far. Where is the intrigue? Where is the class?

The biggest thrill ride ...

Did Daniel Craig not like QUANTUM OF SOLACE or did he not like the so-so reaction from critics and the mostly negative reaction from the general public?

He has been talking very loudly over the last few weeks about the direction HE thinks the franchise should take. He's not talking the way usual franchise actors do about the future installments in the series, he is talking the way someone who has an agenda talks...
“We’ve finished this story as far as I’m concerned. We’ve got a great set of bad guys. There is an organization that we can use whenever we want to. The relationship between Bond and M is secure and Felix is secure. Let’s try and find where Moneypenny came from and where Q comes from. Let’s do all that and have some fun with it.”
YOU CAN READ THE FULL INTERVIEW AT COLLIDER HERE

Once again he tells us he wants Q and Moneypennny integrated in the next installment. I have to agree, it feels like it's time to expand on the expedition scenes by including some humor (sadly lacking in the last movie) and shaking things up a bit between the Judi Dench/Daniel Craig scenes.

He also hints there that he ...

You'll find plenty of stories this week about who is the best Bond, the favorite Bond girl, villain, car or gadget. But I'd suggest that the films' directors - and their specific talents in staging action scenes - are what will truly sustain Bond films into the future, now that Daniel Craig has made the role his own.

Action movies of the last handful of years have increasingly embraced the shaky-cam, hyper-edited aesthetic, and I find this to be a truly unpleasant development. I haven't seen Marc Forster's QUANTUM OF SOLACE yet, but some most reviews are already finding a common theme:

"Forster tries to make up for his lack of action-film experience with jittery fight scenes that are ultimately more confusing than exciting." (NY Daily News)
"...the haphazard direction of Marc Forster, who demonstrates by negative example why Bond movies are best served by journeymen with something to prove rather than would-be A-listers slumming it." (Village Voice)
"You do not make an action sequence more interesting by intercutting it with some unrelated event; you make an action sequence interesting by making it interesting...Forster doesn't have the skill - or the capacity - to recognize that activity is not action." (Cinematical)
	"Forster...shoots and edits his ...

Conflicting box office results for the two biggest releases of the weekend, one which is ruling the competition in the U.K. and one that is struggling in the U.S.

First... QUANTUM OF SOLACE which opened exclusively on Friday in the U.K. (no Thursday night advanced screenings) grossed $8 million (£4.94 million) on it's first day of release. This beats out HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE ($6.5 million) to become the biggest ever opening day gross in this country.

Previously, CASINO ROYALE grossed $4.7 million, so these totals just go to show how much love for that first movie has led to this huge sequel. And of course it's terrific advertising campaign which has seen several notable special t.v. appearances over the last fortnight, posters on virtually every bus in this country and it literally took over Radio 1 this week.

QUANTUM OF SOLACE opens in two weeks time in the U.S

Speaking of the U.S.... Kevin Smith's biggest budget movie to date ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO opened to just $2.3 million on Friday and according to Fantasy Mogul's Steve Mason won't hit higher than $7 million for the weekend.

The movie budgeted at $25 million and staring actual actors in Seth ...

My local cinema begins showing QUANTUM OF SOLACE from 11am today, I plan on seeing the movie tonight a little worried by the mass reviews which question whether the movie truly feels like a Bond movie.

But then again, I originally said the same about CASINO ROYALE.

I keep hearing that a move I lavishly praised has actually hurt the franchise... the hiring of BOURNE series second unit helmer Dan Bradley who is said to have turned Bond into a BOURNE clone. I'm hearing the plot is empty, the villain isn't as interesting as the last one, Olga Kurlyenko is no Eva Green.

But the movie is still suppose to be fun, action packed and with another terrific performance from Daniel Craig.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie is scoring 78% with 21 positive reviews and 6 negative.

Mark Clark, a HUGE Bond fan, loved it when he exclusively saw it for Obsesed With Film last week.

The movie is out today and in two weeks time in the U.S... let us know what you think!

OWF's BOND EXPERT MARK CLARK HAS SEEN QUANTUM OF SOLACE AT A SPECIAL SCREENING IN LONDON EARLIER THIS AFTERNOON.
HERE IS HIS SPOILER FREE REVIEW...
I’m one of those strange characters that first came across James Bond through the pages of an Ian Fleming novel, rather than the pyrotechnics of the big screen. At 8 years old it was a purloined copy of MOONRAKER from the folks’ bookcase that ensured that 007 would be indelibly burned on my brain. Not long after I got my first glimpse of him on the TV, and at that point Fleming Bond and Hollywood Bond went their separate ways.

I’ve loved both and sometimes they’ve briefly inhabited the same space but in general they’ve stayed happily in their own universes. Pretty much until now. Don’t get me wrong, the world of Fleming and the world of 007’s current incarnation are generation’s apart in terms of technology, society, and the international stage but it’s the current film-makers’ intent, and in particular the man himself as personified by Daniel Craig that have brought the author and the celluloid spy to such close proximity.

“You don’t have to worry about me.”, James Bond
In QUANTUM OF SOLACE, the first direct sequel in ...

QUANTUM OF SOLACE director Marc Forster has revealed to Reelz Channel that the latest James Bond movie, the 22nd in the four decade old franchise was originally set to end on a cliffhanger finale, clearly setting up events for a third movie.

We've heard time and time again about this "trilogy" idea which began with CASINO ROYALE as the first act, QUANTUM the middle and then the next movie the finale but Forster claims Columbia didn't want to restrict themselves with having to rigidly follow a key plot point... so they deleted the 1 minute or so "end" scene from prints of SOLACE, though it will make the DVD/Blu-Ray release when it hits shelves in the late Spring.
‘There was a scene after where the movie ends now. The movie felt sort of complete with Bond finding his “quantum of solace.” If I would have kept the scene, then producers wouldn’t have had a choice but to make it a trilogy. Now they can start new. They have that opportunity.’
Forster compares the sequence to the cliffhanger ending from ROYALE...
‘Let’s put it this way: Bond encounters Mr. White at the end of that scene,’—hinting perhaps that Mr. White, first seen in Casino Royale ...

First major press screenings (i.e... we weren't invited) were held last night for QUANTUM OF SOLACE in London and from reading the hastily written review from BBC's Lizo Mzimba, he seemed desperate to tell the world he saw the film before anyone else could, rather than taking the time to write a Pulitzer Prize Winning Review.

Which is fine and in any event, you would be crazy to want to read a whole review this close to the movie's release date. Though Mzimba did recall a nice paragraph which is spoiler free and gives a great indication of what we can expect from the film to AICN, which you can read after the image...

It's a film that feels like the second part of a trilogy, with this being the bleaker second act.

For a lot of the movie Bond is a particularly unsympathetic character, and often it's only Craig's performance along with the shifting morality of Bond's legion of enemies that forces the audience to root for him. Olga Kurylenko, who plays a refreshingly different kind of female companion, does well with a part that has far more depth than most Bond girls.

The images came in yesterday's Daily Mail as part of their "Life" magazine supplement and I'm absolutely shocked that the producers at Columbia pictures would be so forthright in releasing such a major spoiler for their upcoming film. Though I can see why it would drum up interest.
WITH ONLY 3 WEEKS AND CHANGE UNTIL QUANTUM OF SOLACE OPENS IN THE U.K, CAN YOU RESIST FINDING OUT WHICH MEMORABLE BOND MOMENT, QUANTUM OF SOLACE HAS LIFTED?

Speaking to The Mirror in January, Bond girl Gemma Arteton said that her character ‘...sort of comes to a sticky end.’

She was 100% right...

Oil replacing gold for a homage to one of the most memorable deaths of any Bond girl in history, lifted directly from 1964's GOLDFINGER and actress Shirley Eaton's end fate.

Arteton said...
‘I couldn’t move. I couldn’t see, I couldn’t breathe or hear because it went in my ears. It was unpleasant, but it’s something I’ll always remember and it will be an iconic part of the film.’
One interesting point that this homage ...

Not content with allowing the music from the official QUANTUM OF SOLACE theme to drive you to suicide, you now have "Another Way to Die" by watching the music video for the Jack White and Alicia Keyes collaboration at the same time!

Great...

The sad thing is, I know I have to hear that music at least once more when I see QUANTUM OF SOLACE in the theatre at the end of the month.
Oh well, at least I can skip that bit on DVD.

Like his predecessor Martin Campbell, German born QUANTUM OF SOLACE director Marc Forster is only interested in directing one Bond movie in this new series and will turn down any offers for a return for BOND 23, the third of at least four Daniel Craig-007 movies.

The helmer, best known for his dramatic works FINDING NEVERLAND and STRANGER THAN FICTION, will return to smaller sized productions. Speaking to Cinematical he said...
‘At this point I’d rather go back to doing something smaller,’ he stated, ‘you know, it was a good experience and they’ve been very generous in saying I would love to do the next one with you, but it’s just, you know, it takes like a long time and it’s exhausting and I think it’s important to live life as well and, you know, but I did enjoy it, yeah.’
What is up with that creepy eye?

QUANTUM OF SOLACE opens October 31st (U.K.) and November 18th (U.S.).

Another first for QUANTUM FOR SOLACE - it has clocked in at 106 minutes, making it the shortest Bond movie in history.

Some what ironically SOLACE is the first official Bond sequel in the franchise history with events directly carrying on from the end of CASINO ROYALE, which at nearly 2 and a half hours is itself the longest Bond movie in history!

Director Marc Forster told Cinematical...
“…you know, like in the middle of Casino [Royale] they had a very long card game which, which was, was … and in this movie it’s shorter and doesn’t have that type of card game where you sort of reflect more because the story didn’t require it. So the movie is, you know, a little over an hour and forty minutes, so it’s much of a more compact emotional intense journey than Casino, which, I think, had more reflective moments maybe.
One huge criticism of CASINO ROYALE and something I most definitely concurred with was the length, the third act kinda outstayed it's own welcome. Not much chance of that here.

The last Bond movie to clock under 2 hours was 1997's TOMORROW NEVER DIES and it's rarity in the history of the series.

Only three 007 movies in the past have not featured the immortal line "Bond, James Bond" but the tradition ending new series which remember has already dropped Q and Miss. Moneypenny from it's canon, will not feature the popular catchphrase in the upcoming QUANTUM OF SOLACE.

The Independent also say the similarly used catchphrase, "shaken, not stirred" won't make it to the dance either, both were used in CASINO ROYALE as an introduction for Daniel Craig as Bond but aren't required here.

‘There was a “Bond, James Bond” in the script,’ said director Marc Forster. ‘There are several places where we shot it as well, but it never worked as we hoped. I just felt we should cut it out, and [producers] Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson agreed, and Daniel agreed, too. It’s nice to be open-minded about the Bond formula. You can always go back to them later on.’
Of course, they are probably quite right on this one. We have already witnessed Bond's introduction, we hardly need to see him telling us just who he is once again, it is a little corny, which the new Bond movies have done well disposing of from the cheese climax that was DIE ANOTHER ...

Awesome...

Though Judi Dench is really rather annoying. When they see how good Michael Caine was as Alfred in BATMAN BEGINS and how much respect he can give his characters with simply saying the right thing, why did they write M. as such an unlikeable bitch for this series

And the first evil villain speech I've seen from the villain in this one, Mathieu Amalric. Very good, I like it...

It would appear that the disgusting and pointless (is their a reason for a coke drink to exist which has no sugar... or calories as it's marketed in the U.S.?) brand that is Coke Zero has been temporarily re-named Zero Zero as part of a James Bond tie-in campaign to celebrate the upcoming QUANTUM OF SOLACE.

To try and entice you to buy the vile drink, Coke have hired Jack White of The Racentours and The White Stripes fame to score a brand new advert which has been created in the style of the typical Bond film title credit montages.

Will this instrumental score make up part of the theme he composed with Alicia Keyes for the new movie?

Not attempting to promote Coke at all but just for the sake of a closing statement and a bit of trivia... Jack White previously wrote and performed a one-off Coke advert last year which you can remind yourself of HERE.

The more and more I see of the Quantum of Solace, the more I'm absolutely convinced that the smartest move Columbia made was to hire dramatic helmer Marc Forster to work together alongside the best stunt coordinator in the business, Dan Bradley.

They compliment each other so well. Forster has the eye for a great visual, and his scenes are brimming with atmosphere which works so well in tandem with Bradley's exciting and often breathtaking action sequences. Bradley is the guy whose work really shone in The Bourne Ultimatum last year and if you are making an action spectacular and don't have him on board then you are really doing your a movie a disservice.

Premiering tonight over at Yahoo Movies, is the new trailer for Quantum for Solace... expanding on the teaser by a full minute and change. The action scenes look good, the dialogue strong, the characters all interesting.

Bond has never had this much story to tell.

I really enjoyed this trailer. This is quite unlike any Bond interpretation we have ever seen before. He his hurt, emotionally scarred like never before. He wants answers, he wants revenge.

Daniel Craig can hold a great amount of turmoil behind those eyes. And speaking ...
