January 21st, and I finally get this piece up. Shocking, unforgivable and I'm an utter disgrace, I know.

If it wasn't the fact that OWF was created from my own sperm, I would have been fired a long time ago for my continuing incompetence, no doubt. But better late than never and all that.

This year my "No thanks" award goes to the guys in charge of the U.K. distributions of Me and Orson Welles, Crazy Heart and A Single Man for not giving me a snowball's chance in hell of seeing those flicks, and every year you do nothing more than tempt me to move Stateside.

Sadly, those above three movies never stood a chance of making my list.

What you see before you is my very belated Top Ten Films of 2009 and I just wanna say, 2009 was a very good year for movies. At least it was from where I'm sitting.

There's some bitter and twisted critics out there who wouldn't know a good time at the movies if two tickets to a Michael Mann thrill ride or a Quentin Tarantino spectacle hit them squarely on the forehead and for those out there who can't enjoy the following ten of my ...

“Dillinger was popular for a very good reason", said director Michael Mann during a packed press conference at the ballroom of the Berkley hotel, I attended this week for Public Enemies (my review here).
"In Chicago alone in 1933, of 166 regional banks 140 had failed. Unemployment wasn’t 8%, it was 25%. One in four were hungry and cold and miserable, and most people blamed the banks. So Dillinger is stealing from the banks and he’s sharp enough to know that he has to treat hostages well, because he knows they’re all going to be interviewed on the radio.”
I studied History at Cambridge University, home to what is widely considered as one of the best History faculties in the world. I say this not only to blow my own trumpet, but also to put Mann into perspective. This guy gave one of the best oral overviews of a historical period I have ever witnessed.

It’s no coincidence that Mann was attracted to Dillinger. He’s a native Chicagoan who during his youth regularly visited the Biograph cinema, outside which the outlaw was gunned down. More importantly, Dillinger is the very definition of the prototypical Mann hero: a consummate professional.

To use Mann’s own words, ...

“We’re havin’ too good a time today, we ain’t thinking about tomorrow”, states the 1930s outlaw John Dillinger, played by Johnny Depp, in Public Enemies. “No future”, wailed Johnny Rotten in 1977. “Carpe Diem”, as the Ancient Romans would have put it. The sentiment is the same throughout the ages. All that changes is the tone.

It’s that fatalistic yet brave take on life which distinguishes the generation which came up in the interwar period, a generation symbolised to some extent by Dillinger. In the 1930s “little people” all over the world took absolutely everything the Devil could throw at them – economic crisis, a stark choice between unemployment and slave wages, and the worst wars the world has ever witnessed – and generally managed to get through it all with their humanity intact. Reminding us of that is one thing Michael Mann’s new film deserves to be praised for.

Although far from perfect, Public Enemies has much else to recommend it. Its view of the Dillinger myth is very similar to the one offered by John Milius’s Dillinger (1973) – perhaps even excessively so. In both films Dillinger is the main focus of attention and is portrayed as a worthy ...

Michael Mann's Public Enemies, which I saw last night with a tough late teen/early 20's crowd whose only mumbled reaction their limited mindset could churn out was "that was boring", is in actual fact a refreshingly original and exhilarating depiction of the 1930's era of Chicago gangster crimefare, a welcomed treat to a junk filled summer.

A movie that left me in shock and awe during several of it's more dramatic and action set pieces, on the edge of my seat at least once and even left me questioning life's morality by the end.

Not bad going for an early July blockbuster, but in truth, it's a modern American classic and a real Oscar contender that should never open in the scorching heat of the summer because despite the marquee attraction of it's cast, this is never going to be a mainstream crowd-pleaser.

Sure it's got Hollywood hearthrob Johnny Depp once again playing the bad guy who refuses to conform to the rules of the world and naturally becomes the man we pin our hopes on (Sweeney Todd, Pirates of the Caribbean) and yeah it's got ladies favourite Christian Bale as a single-minded, aggressive detective who will use everything in his power to take ...

Mann, Depp, Dillinger. Throw in a bit of Bale and you have an explosive mix of cinematic talent that can't fail to draw interest, not least here at OWF where Alex Diaz has given us some excellent insights into previous portrayals of the intriguing gangster. But how does Mann handle him? And can Depp tone down his characteristic quirkiness for the part?

The combination of Mann and Depp worked surprisingly well, with Dillenger shown less as a guns-blazin' gangster (that role is filled by Stephen Graham's Baby Face Nelson) and more as a man of morals who knows nothing except how to rob banks: and do it with style. Early scenes show him returning money to customers and avoiding bloodshed at all costs. His romance with Billie Frechette is brought in nice and early to expand Dillenger's stong, silent character into the realms of love and chivalry and the dynamic with the various characters of his gang work to make Dillenger stand out as an intelligent and thoughtful character rather than just a violent crook.

All of this panders to Depp's strengths and he delivers a performance to remember. All of his expert knowledge of playing mysterious souls is internalised, giving the ...

I'm just about fed up with my personal life right now. I've been on an up and down emotional state for about two weeks, almost developing Jekyll and Hyde split personalities. I'm not one to usually feel sorry for myself because I don't believe it really gets you anywhere in the long run but I'm feeling it right now.

The fates are conspiring against me. I had arranged to see Public Enemies on Tuesday, at what may or may not be the first critics showing of the film anywhere in the world, a screening I have worked tirelessly at making sure I get a place at along with Simon.

We've arranged our travel down there (rail tickets are shockingly expensive these days) and tomorrow night as a prelude we were gonna see the Ghostbusters Blu-Ray celebration, which should be mighty fun.

The two day break was too be a glimpse at the kind of daily life we would have if we/when we actually move to the capital and do this full time.

And more than that, it's a look at one of the most anticipated movies of the summer. We were even teased with the possibility of interview time with Johnny Depp and Michael Mann ...

MSN Movies have released the first official poster for Michael Mann's PUBLIC ENEMIES, the re-telling of the life of notorious gangster John Dillinger, a Jesse James/Robin Hood-esque figure that will be embodied by Johnny Depp...

The tommy gun, the suit, the leather gloves, the pose, the chicago background. It reminds me so much of one of my favourite posters of last year...

Which in turn, Heath Ledger's pose reminded me of the great James Cagney, the greatest actor from the classic era of gangster movies...

And of course you know where I'm going, Cagney led the famous 1931 gangster flick THE PUBLIC ENEMY, which actually wasn't based on Dillinger BUT was set in the Chicago underworld and was based around a Dillinger-esque figure.

On a serious note... I'm disappointed to see that Depp looks more like Depp than Dillinger. You know what I mean? This is clearly a Johnny Depp starring vehicle and is worryingly being marketed as a blockbuster action vehicle.

I thought Depp had a great chance at a defining performance in this movie and I still think he can but I don't want him to do a Tom Cruise/MISSION IMPOSSIBLE thing. Where is basically playing himself on screen.

Having said that, I have high ...

So I'm just gonna post the one's which I thought were new or interesting, the rest you can see for yourself HERE.

Christian Bale as Melvin Purvis, the man hired to take chase gangster John Dillinger in Michael Mann's PUBLIC ENEMIES...

Dillinger, a man who many consider to be a Robin Hood figure of the early 20th century is played by Johnny Depp...

Bale ain't just taking down Dillinger next year but some TERMINATOR'S too!

John Travolta as the villain terroist in THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123 in Tony Scott's remake of the classic 70's thriller...

Pixar's UP!

Jack Black and Michael Cera in Harold Ramis THE YEAR ONE, a movie that hopefully won't just be remembered as being the catalyst for real movement on GHOSTBUSTERS 3.

A good two days earlier than it usually arrives at my front door, this morning I got hold of the new Empire Magazine which has a rather lazy WOLVERINE cover (I've recently enjoyed the WATCHMEN and STAR TREK ones) but that's ok because it does have a cool exclusive on Michael Mann's 30's gangster epic PUBLIC ENEMIES.

I couldn't find the photo's online yet so I've used my handy iMac webcam thingy to take the stills. They aren't great but they are the best we have right now.

Here's Johnny Depp as John Dillinger, the first "rock star" gangster who was to some the most dangerous criminal in America but to others he was the Robin Hood of a depression era Chicago.

Out to get him is ambitious F.B.I cop Melvin Purvis. Mirroring Al Pacino in HEAT, it's Christian Bale's job to track down Dillinger and his notorious gang by any means necessary and the film is the cat and mouse game between these two historic figures.

This year's Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard plays Dillinger's love interest Billie Frechette.

Director Michael Mann talks of the similarities to HEAT with the mag...

Michael Mann is sure attracting some talented people for his John Dillinger biopic.

Filming is already well under-way but Variety have informed us that Billy Crudup has joined the cast as J. Edgar Hoover, the first director of the F.B.I. in the 1930's whose number one target was Dillinger (Johny Depp) and his gang.

As we already know the awesome Christian Bale will be the cop who becomes hell bent on chasing Dillinger down (think Russell Crowe in American Gangster). Recent Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard plays Dillinger's girlfriend - whilst Giovanni Ribisi, Channing Tatum, David Wenham, Stephen Dorff, John Ortiz, Stephen Graham and Jason Clarke make up the members of his gang.

Also cast is Stephen Lang as Winstead, the leader of some Texas Rangers who are also on the hunt for Dillinger.

This is one of my most anticipated movies in production right now and I'm hoping Mann can deliver the third great Gangster movie of recent times after The Departed and American Gangster which his peers Ridley Scott & Martin Scorsese revelled in.

I think I heard an interview from Christian Bale claiming he wouldn't be on the set of Public Enemies until next week as he's doing press for Batman right now but Johnny Depp's John Dillinger is getting down to business straight away.

Bale you should really get down there. This Dillinger is a murdering psychopath. He ain't gonna be an easy guy to catch you know!

I'm really looking forward to this. I'm holding out for this to be the third really great gangster movie based on real events from a great veteran director following on from Ridley Scott's American Gangster and Martin Scorsese's The Departed (which wasn't based on real events I guess but Scorsese adapted the Asian original to fit in with real life Boston).

Here's hoping Michael Mann brings his A-game as much as the two above mentioned...

More Public Enemies HERE.

The best project to have actually been born out of the WGA strike at the last minute is Michael Mann's PUBLIC ENEMIES, a movie that will see Christian Bale as an F.B.I agent tracking down such notorious gangsters as Pretty Boy Floyd, John "Red" Hamilton and of course the infamous John Dillinger, to be played by Johnny Depp.

These men were collectively known as the PUBLIC ENEMIES, and the eventual taking down of these criminals by then U.S. President J. Edgar Hoover in the 30's by his federal agents, was seen as the true birth of the F.B.I. The Universal Pictures depression-era thriller will begin shooting on March 10th, and Variety carry word of a whole host of names just added as the supporting cast.

First up, Oscar nominated last week for her role in LA VIE EN ROSE was Marion Cotillard, who has been cast as Billie Frechette, the lover of Dillinger. 32 year old Cotillard an unknown actress just 18 months ago was controversially cast as 40's French icon Edith Piaf but as her Academy Award nom shows she put in a fantastic performance and from the still from that movie above... if she were to use that make-up again ...
