Oh dear Lord - this looks all kinds of terrible.

The official trailer for next May's Disney tentpole Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, the adaptation of the much loved video game franchise that we all hoped would end the rot of "games to film" translations is online and viewable below. Sadly, this one ain't going to be the game changer we hoped it would.

First off... who the hell chose Gemma Arterton to be the narrator of this movie when you have such fine talkers as Alfred Molina and Ben Kingsley? Her annoying, "can't you tell I'm reading from a script" monotone voice is the most irritating I've heard for a feature film in some time. Her narration just goes on... and on.... and on... and on, like some kind of whiny eight year old. She is just like a video game narrator, telling you all the rules of the universe and giving you a GPS like navigation into all the things you have to do to move onto the next level.

And Mike Newell, what's with your direction buddy? He has literally translated what the game feels like to play onto the big screen. The introduction shot of Jake Gyllenhaal ...

Empire have a couple of brand new and exclusive images from next May's Disney tentpole, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time as part of their Sherlock Holmes' front covered September issue.

The above image features star Jake Gyllenhaal (as Prince of Persia) and Gemma Arterton (as Princess Tamina) getting wet in what seems to be some kind of chase sequence.

Last week, Coming Soon got the heads-up on the first image of Ben Kingsley as the villain Nizam, a nobleman out to possess the Sands of Time, a gift from the Gods that reverses time.

Maybe Kingsley wants it so he can banish memories of playing the Thunderbirds villain?

The movie's out in May. It's one of the biggest Disney releases of 2010 but there's no word of anything being shown at the Con for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, a film series they hope will fill the gap Pirates of the Caribbean has left behind in the end of year profits. Shouldn't they have taken a cue from the likes of Iron Man which thrived on Con coverage in 2007 which really got the ball running for Marvel, and truly never slowed down?

Still, I say Prince of Persia was doomed from day one with the mis-casting of Jake Gyllenhaal as a Persian warrior.

First substantial bit of marketing for the movie has debuted today at Empire. Which is kinda fitting because it does look like two alternative covers for their next issue. Apparently they have a big exclusive for their next month... hmmm, I wonder, if the cover will look this too...

If you get over the obvious and rather embarrassing flirtation attempt from an ET presenter with star Jake Gyllenhaal on the set of PRINCE OF PERSIA just outside of London then you can actually enjoy a very early glimpse at how the Memorial Day 2010 release is shaping up.

Great to see Gyllenhaal doing as much of the action as he can, though I was less than impressed by Gemma Arteton's school of Keira Knightley/PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN over sword play acting.

And how did producer Jerry Bruckheimer manage to keep a straight face when he said the photography he hadn't seen the likes of since LAWRENCE OF ARABIA?
CLICK HERE TO SEE THE FOOTAGE!
Not enough shown to really have much of an opinion on this, can't wait to see how the great Ben Kingsley shapes up in this franchise. Mike Newell (HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE) directs.

This should be the greatest video game adaptation of all time and should set the precedent for the future.

I've just finished watching the excellent Blu-Ray transfer of THE 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD and there's a sorcerer in that movie by the name of Sokurah who looks exactly like Ben Kingsley does here.

This set pic is from PRINCE OF PERSIA, a SINBAD-esque movie adapted from the very popular and long standing video game where Kingsley plays the villian Nizam.

Previous set pics are still online of the movie's lead Jake Gyllenhaal.

The plot of the movie follows Kingsley killing his brother, the King of Persia and putting the blame on the King's son Dastan (Gyllenhaal). Nizam seeks the Sands of Time, which is so powerful it will allow him to take over the world.

The movie opens May 28th 2010 and co-stars Gemma Arterton and Alfred Molina for direct Mike Newell.

Recently delayed by 12 months, the now slated for a May 2010 release, the video game adaptation of Prince of Persia has become victim of spy photographers out in Morocco earlier today.

Those pesky press got a few snaps of Jake Gyllenhaal as the title character...

Ok, so I will admit that Gyllenhaal doesn't actually look as far removed as the original character from the game but I still think that when you are making a movie about the Prince of Persia, the damn guy playing him should most certainly be Persian.

Just a thought!

What's yours?

Walt Disney Pictures have pushed back the previously big June 2009 tentpole release Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time to May 2010, where it will now enjoy one of the most lucrative spots of the summer - the memorial day weekend.

The reason for the move isn't fully explained in their press release but it's probably a combination of one of the biggest tentpole positions of the year being open to them if they sat on the film for a while and also the short amount of time between now and the June 13th date to get this project wrapped and in the can.

No disruption is expected to the shooting of the film, which see's Jake Gyllenhaal as the young prince in sixth century Persia who along with an exotic princess (Bond girl Gemma Arterton) must prevent a villainous nobleman (Ben Kingsley) from poessessing the Sands of Time.

The Sands of Time is a gift from the Gods that has the power to reverse time and allow it's possessor to rule the world!

Alfred Molina co-stars as a mentor to the Prince, for Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire director Mike Newell.

Two British veterans Alfred Molina and Ben Kingsley have joined the cast of the Disney adaptation of the Ubisoft video game Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time says Variety.

Molina will play Sheik Amar, who becomes a mentor to the prince but it's not known what Kingsley's role in the movie is. Maybe he is some kind of villain?

The duo have been in a movie together, 13 years ago in Species. They are the two to the furthest right of the image below...

Jake Gyllenhaal leads the movie as the Prince of Persia which like I said when it was announced was just horrible studio casting. Upcoming Bond lassie Gemma Arteton plays the love interest.

Jerry Bruckheimer (who else) produces the first of what is hoped will become a big franchise for Disney, with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix director Mike Newell in charge behind the camera. Look for this one next Summer.

The Hollywood Reporter say that Jake Gyllenhaal will play the lead role in the anticipated movie adaptation of the popular video game Prince of Persia.

Jake's a decent actor and all but I'm afraid this is horrible, horrible casting!

First of all, why couldn't they have gone and found a Persian or failing that, a Persian looking actor to play the Prince of frikkin' Persia?

And secondly - possibly most importantly. Gyllenhaal has no charisma. I swear he doesn't. Boring as shit.

What I would have gone for is an Orlando Bloom fresh faced type. I'm not saying Orlando Bloom himself but I'm saying a young looking guy who actually looks physically like an old 60's style action adventure hero. Some one you can actually get behind.

Gyllenhaal is fine at playing neurotic and ordinary but he's never been likeable to me. He's not an actor to easily get behind and in an adventure film like this, I think he might be out of his range quite honestly. Sometimes actors should stay away from blockbusters and this one reminds me a lot of the Edward Norton casting in The Incredible Hulk.

Also cast in the film is upcoming Bond girl Gemma Arterton. She will play the ...

A rumor that was glossed up by some journalists to be the gospel truth around the web this morning (you will notice we didn't report on it) has unsurprisingly been proven to be false.

Orlando Bloom has not been cast as the Prince of Persia in the Walt Disney Pictures movie which shall soon begin filming under the lens of Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) at Pinewood before moving off to Morocco.

You can probably also chalk off the rumor that Zac Efron was the studio's second choice for the part.

Jerry Bruckheimer is producing the film which at this stage is set for a release next June where it is expected to fill the gap left behind by the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

Not to be picky or anything Mr. Bruckheimer - but I would love if you actually would cast a Persian as the Prince of Persia please. Or at worst, someone who looked Persian. I don't think that is too much to ask now is it? THANK YOU!

If this film is staying on course I would expect some real casting news to leak soon.
