Fresh off the positive reception of the Predators footage released at SXSW, producer Robert Rodriguez has wisely decided to show the first full trailer for the upcoming summer film.

The SXSW reel was fine, but this is a better and more effective look at the film. It's well-cut, it feels dense, and appears to have an interesting band of characters. I just wish they hadn't recycled that net-in-the-jungle business from the first film, because it makes the film look like a parody or remake. Otherwise, this is exactly how you build anticipation among fanboys:

Director Robert Rodriguez finds himself in a curious place this morning after releasing a sneak preview of his upcoming Predators film. Geek site owners like Alex Billington over at FirstShowing are shitting Skittles over this glimpse at the film, but could we ever expect anything else from Alex? He's the Ben Lyons of movie bloggers. Meanwhile, Jeffrey Wells has yet again gone on the attack, calling Rodriguez a "bottom feeder" in an article this morning.

I must admit that this glimpse at the film, opening this summer, gives me a bit of relief. Rodriguez, the epitome of the indie spirit, has been wallowing in kid movie Hell for the last decade. The movies he's made during that period are loud, painfully silly, and chintzy-looking. They're the film versions of those primary-colored plastic trucks in the markdown bins at WalMart.

Yet I cannot fault Rodriguez like Wells has on several occasions. Rodriguez has built his own studio on his own land. He owns it all. He does everything on his films, making him the only true auteur out there. His films, good or bad, are handcrafted in a way that even directors outside the studio system cannot replicate. Rodriguez is living the dream of pure ...

I was kinda pinning my hopes on Newcastle born Neil Marshall (The Descent, Dog Soldiers) to helm Predators after he came into the mix last month, but according to Harry Knowles, writer/producer Robert Rodriguez has had his eye on Nimrod Antal (Vacancy) for a while and it's no surprise to him that Rodriguez has confirmed his appointment this week.

According to Rodriguez, he is going to have a very "hands on" approach to his producing capacity at Troublemaker Studios (with 20th Century Fox financing), and it reminds him of the close collaboration he had with Frank Miller on making Sin City. Though remember Rodriguez mostly directed Sin City so that's a strange comment and one that if I was Antal, I would be worried he was going to take over my picture.

I have no way of classifying this picture as of yet (is it a sequel/prequel/reboot or what?) but Rodriguez does say it “still involves a very intense group of people stranded on a Predator planet discovering unspeakable horrors (that are not always from outside their group). So like the original movie, the title does have a double meaning.”

UPDATE:

Just as this was to ready to post, news has flitered through from Bloody Disgusting that Neil Marshall (The Descent, Dog Soldiers, Doomsday) is in talks to direct Rodriguez's script for Predators at 20th Century Fox.

The movie is on the fast track looking for a July 2010 release.
If you hang around nerd circles these days, you might have heard rumors that a remake or sequel to Predator is in the works, and that a prequel to Alien is also in development. If you hang around nerd circles, you’ve probably also already encountered some debate between those who want to hang the money-hungry producers for trying to financially and artistically rape the two franchises and those who just can’t help but be curious about either of the two projects in the off chance that a deft hand at directing causes them to be watchable. But do any of these projects have any chance at existing, firstly, and then secondly, surviving?

Let’s just go over what we are dealing with here. The Alien project, though first rumored to be a remake, is apparently now a prequel film about the origins of the creature. The Predator project was first rumored to be a remake ...

You probably noticed my small dig at Robert Rodriguez late last week, suggesting that he should get around to actually making movies rather than simply talking about making them but it's not entirely his fault I guess. When you look at the unfortunate situations he has had to deal with regarding studio indecisions over Sin City 2, Red Sonja and Barbarella, he is not really the one to blame as to why the stuff he talked about previous hasn't so far panned out.

Or simply put, I'm willing to give him a break and actually report on what he has to say this time. AICN got a chance to question Rodriguez over the weekend on what exactly the situation is with this new Predator movie (is it a reboot, sequel, who is directing, etc) and exactly what involvment Rodriguez will have with the picture.

Rodriguez confirmed that he got a call from 20th Century Fox's co-President of production Alex Young, who stumbled across a dusty 15 year old treatment titled Predators, a movie which Rodriguez planned as a sequel to the original film (which I believe totally dismissed the sequels) and was at one time the priority one for the helmer.

Rodriguez says...
