Peter Berg's departure from Dune in October wasn't anything to do with a skewed vision or creative problems - just simply a case of a guy stacking up too many projects. He is currently making Battleship (yes, an adaptation of the board game) which will be an alien sea-fare action film, then he hopes to move onto a Hancock sequel, so as much as he wanted to he just couldn't fit Dune in.

It's taken Paramount a while but they have finally chosen his replacement - Pierre Morel, the French born action director behind Taken, District B13 and the upcoming John Travolta crazy looking From Paris With Love. Speaking of which, in a case of good timing, Morel's next film just got a second trailer today.

Paramount are now searching for a new writer to re-write Josh Zetumer's (Quantum of Solace) script to fit Morel's vision of the adaptation.

I know very little of Dune - I haven't read James Herbert's text and nor have I ever seen the infamous David Lynch original but I am very curious as to how they keep hiring action directors for this project, when to me it sounds like it needs a methodical, cerebral, sci-fi kind of ...

It grossed $624 million worldwide, so a sequel to Hancock was always envitable - it was just a case of offering Will Smith money he couldn't refuse.

The Hollywood Reporter say Adam Fierro and Glen Mazzara (two writers on The Shield) have been hired to work closely with Smith, director Peter Berg and the original producing team to come up with a story idea for a sequel which more than likely will delve further into the 3,000 year old relationship between the two Gods played by Will Smith and Charlize Theron, who tragically are never able to be with one another but keep being drawn by this force and pull to keep ending up back together.

It's also a safe bet to predict that another God will probably be the main villain.

I absolutely hated the first movie which completely butchered what SHOULD have been a dark and compelling look at a superhero could save the world but couldn't make the woman of his dreams fall in love with him, and how this inability to get what he wants sends him into a deep depression involving alcoholism, attempted suicide and even rape. Now that's the movie I wanted to see!

Okay so, it’s a little late, but here goes…

This is my Everest. Trying to write a review of HANCOCK that in no way mentions the “film of two halves; first good, second not so” argument, despite the obvious temptation. But you know what, that wasn’t the major concern that I was left with after the credits rolled; instead, I got the undeniable sense of a good film suffering a monumental identity crisis, much like Smith’s wayward Marvel. HANCOCK could reasonably be classified as a Superhero movie, a (confused) morality tale, a buddy movie or a straight up good guys versus bad guys flick, among various others, but it is never wholly any of them. The film just has too many ideas- most of them good on their own- that are never afforded enough focus or development to really matter, leaving me slightly perplexed. I’d hate to pin it all on bad direction, as I have a lot of time for Peter Berg- THE KINGDOM was vastly underrated, and I wait in intrigued anticipation for his take on DUNE and HERCULES- but it all smacks a bit of Fledgling-Director Syndrome, trying to shoehorn too much in to impress a “superstar” Producer- ...

Journalist turned screenwriter Evan Wright (Generation Kill) will scribe Cocaine Cowboys for the big screen for Paramount, a movie which we told you back in January had Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg attached to adapt.

Centering around Jon Roberts, an injured Vietnam vet who by the age of 20 ended up in violent gang related takeovers of New York nightclubs in the early 70's. He would later find himself drug dealing in Miami earning up to billions of dollars for a Medellin drug cartel.

Unbelievably he became a huge distributor of billions of dollars worth of cocaine and became such a big figure that he could bribe the Miami PD to shut down causeways, so in Grand Theft Auto style - he could race cars.

The events were all chronicled in the 2006 documentary Cocaine Cowboys.
"It's really an exciting story about the secret history of America," Wright said. "It's also a story that outwardly seems familiar, but the more you get into it, it's never really been told this way. It's about a guy who was a cocaine smuggler in a mafia -- we kind of know those stories -- but he also worked closely with the government to smuggle arms for the ...

Peter Berg (Hancock, The Kingdom) is already attached to remake the fantasy movie Dune for Paramount but today comes news of a potentially bigger epic. It's been announced that Universal have hired the helmer to spearhead a new movie based on the famous legend of Greek mythology, Hercules.

The project is based on the new 5 issue comic book series that debuted in May from Steve Moore.

The movie will be titled Hercules: The Thracian Wars (what's wrong with just Hercules) and will be co-financed by Spyglass Entertainment and produced by Berg's own Film 44 and Radical Pictures

MMM, I love the Hercules character - I've always found him more fascinating than the likes of Conan and the writings of Robert E. Howard but I'm not sure Berg is the man here. If his last two movies have shown us anything it's that Berg is a terrific director of action sequences but hasn't got a clue narratively how to direct a blockbuster movie or epic sized movie.

And his directing is so modern, he feels like an MTV director. Would that suit a movie about Greek mythology, I'm not so sure?

As the Hercules character is in the public domain, the rival project from writer ...

Every fan of comic books and movies has probably wondered what it might be like if a superhero was really just a regular guy in the real world. It's easy to imagine the isolation one would feel as the example of their kind; the power they easily wield shields them normal human contact and interaction.

Such is the promise of HANCOCK, and the first half of the film flies so close to capturing such an atmosphere that the disastrous second half becomes unforgivable.

Perennial Fourth of July wonderboy WILL SMITH stars as Hancock, a drunken, rude, and indestructible man prone to sleeping off hangovers on park benches in between saving the world. He doesn't much care for his enviable position as savior, and the general public doesn't particularly enjoy Hancock's destructive saving techniques. One of these rescues involves a charming public relations manager named Ray (JASON BATEMAN), who wants to return the favor by helping Hancock to rehabilitate his public image. Hancock isn't thrilled by the proposal, and neither is Ray's curiously angry wife Mary (CHARLIE THERON).

It's easy to see why the first half of this screenplay became such a hit as it made the rounds in Hollywood years ago. Satirical ...

Phillip Noyce has become the third director attached to the C.I.A. thriller Edwin A. Salt, a movie that Tom Cruise is STILL attached too despite two previous attempts at making the film coming undone.

Noyce will be hoping to succeed where Peter Berg (who tried to rush the project through during the WGA strike) and Terry George failed.

The drama casts Cruise as a CIA officer who's accused by a defector of being a Russian sleeper spy. He must elude capture long enough to clear his name.
Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrium, The Recruit) wrote the screenplay and I've gotta say, Noyce is the most suited man for this project over the two previous mentioned. He has some real credentials in this genre having directed Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger with Harrison Ford in the 90's.

The film is setup at Columbia and once again it has to deal with potential strike problems as to whether it could shoot this summer or not. This could be a nice straight forward thriller to get Cruise back on track.

Ah, now this is the kind of scene I was looking forward to watching in Peter Berg's (The Kingdom, Friday Night Lights) superhero movie Hancock.

The one's you don't get in the usual superhero movie, the one's where it's a fully realised environment where we see how Hancock - who power is known to everybody in the world it seems, tries to integrate with the common man.

And look at Charlize Theron. She is just gushing over him right now, she is so hot for him. Poor Jason Bateman would never be able to compete with the raw magnetism of Will Smith.

So he doesn't age huh?
Interesting. I wonder if he saw Citizen Kane on it's first run or if he ran into Nestor Carbonell from Lost on his travels?

Some dark undertones at play here and a very uncomfortable shuffling social feeling to it that you just don't get from the Batman or Iron Man movies. In it's favour Hancock is the first superhero movie that doesn't have years of comic book canon behind it for us to worry about how the film is dealing with major events, storylines and characters - so the sky is the limit here.

They can do what they ...

A real feel of the Iron Man flying scenes here for Hancock, a movie which is rapidly nearing it's July 2nd release.

Out of all the summer blockbusters, including The Incredible Hulk - this is one damn movie I have no clue how it's going to turn out. Not a clue.

I love Will Smith as an actor, the supporting cast is solid and I'm really digging the directing style of Peter Berg (The Kingdom, The Rundown). But there's just so much that could so easily go wrong with this...

And that news earlier this month of 11th hour re-shoots is not something you want to here this close to a movie opening. But I'm keeping the faith and you should to!

During American Idol in the U.S. last night an extended trailer for Will Smith's quickly approaching twist on the superhero genre titled Hancock played and now we have it for you below too.

I'm really starting to get into this movie now. Hancock doesn't quite look so much of an ass as I thought he was going to be. I still can't say I love the suit but it kinda blends in with the environment and this movie looks so much more epic and summer blockbustery (that can't possibly be a word!) than I thought it would.

There's no doubt that this is less on drama than it will be on delivering another action superhero film. And I like they have kept much of Charlize Theron away from these trailers so far, I believe her part is quite a big sub-plot but they have kept that away from the trailers and that's fair play to them.

Peter Berg is a great director but this is quite different to anything he has done before. I'm actually more positive than I have ever been for this film right now...

Will Smith's depressed, alcoholic, probably suicidal superhero John Hancock doesn't just dress like a bum in this summer's blockbuster movie, we also get to see him in costume.

The only problem is Peter Berg and his costume designing crew are about ten years behind with this design. It's pretty much identical to the "X-Men real world design" that none of us were too kean on in 2000.

Our first look at HANCOCK in Uniform is below, followed by an image of Cyclops from X-MEN to show you the similarity. This one hits on the first weekend of July worldwide.
