According to The Free Dictionary, the grammar definition of the word "parallel" is... "having identical or equivalent syntactic constructions in corresponding clauses or phrases".

So when The Hollywood Reporter say that screenwriter Josh Zetumer (who wrote a remake of Dune for Peter Berg) has been brought on to write a parallel script to George Nolfi's screenplay for Bourne IV... what conclusion do we come to?

Are they both writing a script which Universal will then decide which one they want to use - or will they blend the best bits of both scripts together?

Nolfi had been working on Bourne IV solo before he departed to direct The Adjustment Bureau, a Phillip K. Dick adaptation that shoots next month, also starring Matt Damon. It is however hoped that Nolfi will return to where he left off once filming is complete.

Parallel scripts are said to be rare but when are practised, the result is a little problematic. X-Men Origins: Wolverine had one, which probably explains half the reason why it was so disjointed, because it came from two different scripts.

Universal president Ron Meyer this week mentioned that getting tentpoles back up and running was a priority for the studio, and producer Frank Marshall has ...

The first draft of Greg Nolfi's (The Bourne Ultimatum) script for a fourth Bourne movie has come in a little later than expected and producer Frank Marshall has updated his twitter page with news that he expects to get his hands on the draft by June, which he claims now means the movie won't be released until Summer 2011.

Previously, they were expecting to have the movie in theatres by next Summer.

The fourth Bourne movie is the first not based on a Robert Ludlum novel, though we've heard the non-Bourne Ludlum novel The Pacific Mosaic, might have been an influence to the film's plot.

Matt Damon is on board to return to the franchise, with Paul Greengrass in the director's chair once again but only IF, the script is to their liking. That's not to say they won't do a fourth movie if they hate it, it just means they will likely send this writer away again to come up with a better story.

The oddly titled THE PARSIFAL MOSAIC, a spy thriller written by the original author/creator Robert Ludlum which DID NOT involve the character of Jason Bourne but could be used as a framework for the series...

Coming Soon carry this plot...
"The Parsifal Mosiac," not a "Bourne" adventure as a novel, deals with a U.S. spy who falls in love with another spy who is revealed to be a double agent just before her death. When he retires from the business, though, the spy learns that she may still be alive and sets out to learn the truth.
Sounds very James Bond like.

Producer Frank Marshall told the site that this was the story they were looking at possibly adapting as the next BOURNE adventure, dismissing the possibility of using other books in the BOURNE cannon as they want to respect the original Ludlum writings.

Of which they own every novel Ludlum wrote that has yet to be adapted.

He also tells us that only screenwriter Greg Nolfi (he co-wrote the last movie) is officially on board along side himself and that Matt Damon and presumably Paul Greengrass are waiting on the script before committing. We believe though that both are interested.

Last we heard, Universal were planning to move forward with a fourth BOURNE movie based on an original screenplay and story from George Nolfi, one of the co-writers on the last movie. But today's Variety hints that coming up with an original story may not be going so well because the studio have just paid big bucks to acquire all the novels in the BOURNE series exclusively for them to adapt.

The only novels yet adapted for screen are Eric Van Lustbader's trilogyThe Bourne Legacy (2004), The Bourne Betrayal (2007) and this year's The Bourne Sanction (2008). Universal have also nabbed the first look rights at every novel Robert Ludlum ever wrote that has yet been adapted, which totals to around 25 novels.

Both Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass have already signed on for a new movie in the $1 billion franchise which Universal are fast tracking for a release in about 20 months time.
"Universal has done such an excellent job with the first three films that they deserve the opportunity to keep Jason Bourne at the studio forever," Weiner told Daily Variety.
Another reason for the deal is that MGM And Relativity Media this year won the rights against Universal for ...

The Hollywood Reporter say Ben Stiller is in, and they like to stress, "exploratory talks", to helm the DreamWorks 1968 period drama about the riots at the Democratic convention and their aftermath, which we have known for a good number of years now as THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7.

The studio are said to be desperate to move forward with the picture and now that Steven Spielberg is busy with TINTIN and Paul Greengrass is looking to prep BOURNE 4, they are likely to be considering more far reaching candidates for Aaron Sorkin's much lauded script.
Also working in Stiller's favour is the success of TROPIC THUNDER which apart from making $164 million worldwide, will have proven to them he can make a genre movie, handle a big ensemble cast of big name actors and for some, he even got some great direction credit.
Though of course that's a long way from suddenly becoming the guy who replaces Spielberg and helms a movie from the writer of A FEW GOOD MEN which delves into the real life moments of a historically significant event. I mean, Phillip Seymour Hoffman was once rumored for this film.. can you imagine him working under and taking ...

Universal have hired George Nolfi, the screenwriter of THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM to return to the series and pen a fourth adventure and the first one that won't be based on an already existing title in the Robert Ludlum created universe.

Nolfi will have to work from an original idea. Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass will both return as lead and director respectively say Variety...

Previously the studio and the talent involved had agreed to stop at the third installment before but after the THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM became a huge near $400 million worldwide hit and was one of the best reviewed movies of 2007... they couldn't resist going ahead with a fourth movie.

Mania.com say that Paul Greengrass is to favourite to direct BLACKBEARD, the Dreamworks movie based on the ruthless seafaring pirate Edward Teach which was greenlit in May.

Unlike the kid friendly Disney film PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, Dreamworks' movie is likely to be a near R-Rated look at what the world of piracy was really like...

David Franzoni (Amistad, Gladiator) wrote the screenplay, and the film is being produced by Barry Johnson and former Philadelphia 76ers prexy/co-owner Pat Croce, who wrote "Pirate Soul," a book that chronicled the golden era of piracy, which spanned 1690-1730.

The movie will follow Teach's separation from the British Royal Navy after the War on Spain, turning to piracy along with his ship mates after feeling disowned by his country. There he became a ruthless pirate (TRUE) but the made up bit is where the main focus will be, said to be his former protege working for the British trying to hunt Teach down.

Greengrass, the director of the last two BOURNE movies and UNITED 93 has recently completed work on his political thriller GREEN ZONE with Matt Damon. From there, he was rumored to work on THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7 from Aaron Sorkin's much lauded script ...

The Writer's Strike ended any chance that Steven Spielberg had of quickly putting together two movies in quick succession like he did in late 2004/early 2005 with the, meaning his cool sounding project The Trial of the Chicago 7 has been on hold since the Spring.

You may remember this was the movie that was allegedly to star the great cast of Sacha Baron Cohen, Will Smith, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Kevin Spacey & Jeff Daniels, depicting the the famous protesters at the 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago.

However there is some talk of a project resurrection today. Production Weekly have listed The Bourne Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass to the project hinting that pre-production is to begin soon. Has Greengrass got hold of the project or is it just an error somewhere down the food chain of the online site?

Greengrass is currently in post production on his next film the espionage thriller Green Zone with Matt Damon, with only a potential fourth movie in the Jason Bourne series on his upcoming slate over at Universal.

If Greengrass has managed to keep the majority of the cast that Spielberg was courting interested, then he could have one hell of a movie on his hands here.

It's become clear in the last six months or so that Matt Damon's comments towards the release of The Bourne Ultimatum that he was done with the franchise were a little premature and that opinions have changed since then. Probably the critical acclaim for the last movie and the $442 million the movie made worldwide had something to do with it.

We keep hearing little hints about a fourth movie being closer to a reality than we would have previously guessed and now IESB have got their hands on some solid quotes from the franchise producers that they hope the film to be in theatres by 2010.

They even give us a possible release date and plot...
"Absolutely. Hopefully we will be shooting next summer for release in 2010. There was a fourth book written, but it was not by Mr. Ludlum. So we're probably going to take our own direction and we're working on what that storyline's gonna be right now."
Interesting and it sounds like they are ditching that fourth Bourne novel written by Eric Van Lustbader titled The Bourne Legacy. The producers even state that they expect Bourne to travel to South America for the next movie.

After three movies, the franchise ...

No matter how much star power is pumped into them, the "war on terror" movies haven't proven to be neither box office Gold or of any real quality, not even remotely tackling certain issues as effectively or thoroughly as we would like.

In fact I would argue that the most effective film tackling the subject in recent times would be Paul Greengrass' own United 93, a film that never once delved into American politics.

The talented British director will be looking to stir up emotions with Green Zone, his next movie which re-teams him with his Bourne star Matt Damon.

Here's our first look at the picture from filming out in central London thanks to The Bad and Ugly...

The fictional thriller is roughly based upon Rajiv Chandrasekaran’s nonfiction book “Imperial Life in the Emerald City: Inside Iraq’s Green Zone” and follows a group of U.S. troops in Iraqi occupation who the press claim are being mis-treated by the men in charge who know nothing of what it is like to experience life in that war zone.

Buried deep over the weekend in one of Variety's strange "outlook" stories, it was reported the following...
More recently, Shmuger and Linde landed Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon for a fourth "Bourne" movie, even though the director and star seemed ready to wrap it up after three pics.
Mmmm.

Typically from the trade, it's one of those stories where they don't really tell us all that much because they probably know as little as we do.

I'm pretty certain Matt Damon will be back as BOURNE but maybe not so soon, despite what Variety say. Yeah it's not easy to walk away from such a successful series but I think Damon is wanting to explore other avenues for the time being but I'm pretty certain he'll be back one. Just not yet.

Although one thing we shouldn't forget is that Greengrass and Damon are working together on the Iraqi drama GREEN ZONE. Notoriously when actors and directors spend so much time today, they tend to cook up ideas and future projects... the subject of a fourth BOURNE movie is bound to have come up.
