USA Today have released the first image of Russell Crowe from the set of Robin Hood, his fifth colloberation with director Ridley Scott and the first since Gladiator nine years ago that brings the duo back into the realm of the summer adventure blockbuster.

If you've been reading OWF for a while, you're already aware that I think Crowe is about five years past playing this kind of role and Scott missed a trick by not casting him as the older and bitter villain, The Sheriff of Nottingham. Having said that, Crowe has clearly slimed down and the short hair cut does knock a few years off him.

That haircut and beard combination worked for Gladiator, I'm certain that's what Scott is harpening back to here. Producer Brian Grazer agrees...
"He doesn't have the old Robin Hood tights," says producer Brian Grazer. "He's got armor. He's very medieval. He looks, if anything, more like he did in Gladiator than anything we're used to seeing with Robin Hood."
What surprises me most about the image is the lack of green and how dry the landscape looks. The reason we aren't seeing Robin Hood in cinema's this year is because the movie was delayed from shooting because Scott didn't think ...

Not that anyone will particularly care, but I'm celebrating a small victory for Obsessed With Film today. Those of you with magnificent memories will remember back in June, we reported that William Hurt was in talks for a role in Ridley Scott's then titled Robin Hood movie Nottingham.

Ok granted, we predicted he would be playing King John, one of the expected villains but that was only because we looked at the tradition of the Robin Hood movies and thought he would fit the role well. It was quite an obvious prediction to make.

As the months went on and Ridley Scott's production kept changing, the trades stopped talking about Hurt as being part of it. But Obsessed With Film didn't, we had a feeling and a hunch that he was still going to be on board. And if you look through our archives, we kept mentioning and shoving down the name of Hurt into everyone's throats.

And we have been rewarded for that today. The Hollywood Reporter say William Hurt has joined the movie (which I'm of the opinion, he has been attached to for nearly a year now) as the 1st Earl of Pembroke, William Marshall. According to Wiki, he was ...

A curious absence from the "final" casting update from Universal regarding Ridley Scott's May 2010 released epic Nottingham, is the Sheriff, a character who for the most recent adaptations of the Hood mythology has usually been the main villain.

A character too who has been in every plot synopsis (including the official one they have released today, despite claiming no-one is cast in the role) and at one time was said to be depicted by Russell Crowe who was playing both the Sheriff and Robin Hood in a new contemporary twist.

That was until Scott told MTV last month that he thought “It is better to simply have the evolution of a character called Robin Hood, who will come out of a point in the Crusades which is the end.”

And with that The Sheriff was gone.

But as I say, the absence of The Sheriff from the casting sheet , despite him being mentioned as a character described as a "despotic sheriff" in the synopsis, is very curious indeed isn't it? Here's the full cast...
Russell Crowe, as Robin Hood.

Cate Blanchett, as Maid Marian.

Oscar Isaac, as King John (looks like William Hurt dropped out sometime in the last year and Scott has gone for his Body of Lies ...

E.R's Scott Grimes has been cast as Will Scarlett, the skilled swordsmen and nephew of ROBIN HOOD...

LOST actor Kevin Durand will play Little John... the ironically named tough guy, whose confrontation on a river log is one of the most memorable moments of Hood mythology.

Said scene has already been translated to screen in perfectly fine fashion.

First back in the 1930's with Errol Flynn and Alan Hale...

And then again in 1991 with Kevin Costner and Nick Brimble...

A moment immortalised in statues and drawings...

The Hollywood Reporter also confirm yesterdays story that the lead singer of Great Big Sea, Canadian folk-rocker Alan Doyle will play Alan-a-Dale.
Cast looks like this (we await news of who is playing main villain, The Sheriff of Nottingham.... and if they are written in the script, characters Friar Tuck which the great Paul Giamatti has been linked with, perfect casting if you have seen SIDEWAYS and either Godfrey or Gisbourne depending on who Strong is playing.

Russell Crowe - ROBIN HOOD
Cate Blanchett - MAID MARION
Mark Strong - IMDB list him as SIR. GODFREY. We heard previously GUY OF GISBOURNE.

Not bad going, Sir Ridley. Not bad at all.

Variety have tonight confirmed actor Mark Strong's claim last month that Cate Blanchett will play Maid Marian in Universal's $130 million tentpole movie ROBIN HOOD, Scott's first big adventure blockbuster since GLADIATOR.

The addition of Blanchett, possibly the greatest actress of her generation, raises the bar of this production to all new heights.

Though I'm still of the opinion that Crowe is badly cast to play ROBIN HOOD in an origin movie, as this is being setup as. If you've seen 3:10 TO YUMA, you've already witnessed Crowe play the perfect embodiment of the charming bastard The Sheriff of Nottingham. Physically he is better for that part, his acting style more suitable, we all know the older Crowe makes a better bad guy than a good guy.

Another Aussie actor, Sam Worthington, I would have loved seen go up against Crowe's Sheriff here.

Previously titled NOTTINGHAM, Brian Helgeland's (MYSTIC RIVER, L.A. CONFIDENTIAL) recent re-draft takes Scott's movie straight back into classic ROBIN HOOD fare and will re-tell the familiar story of The Sheriff's trouble with Robin of Loxley and his Merry Men.

Ridley Scott tells MTV that he is "going back to basics" and has re-titled his epic NOTTINGHAM to ROBIN HOOD.

He also tells the site that lead Russell Crowe will simply play Hood and NOT The Sheriff of Nottingham as well. Scott has changed his mind and figured out it was dumb to think that Hood and The Sheriff was the same person.

Or did Universal force a more mainstream project on Scott?
“[Crowe as both Robin and the Sheriff of Nottingham] was an idea so far back, way back when at the time I had this proposed to me, and I read it and thought, ‘I don’t really know what it does for it, but it’s alright’,” Scott recalled of the now-abandoned idea. “It is better to simply have the evolution of a character called Robin Hood, who will come out of a point in the Crusades which is the end.”
Now suddenly with Crowe playing Hood and if Scott finds a top star to play the villain Sheriff, you got a huge tentpole release on your hands. Though Scott hints that the Sheriff will only be a small villain as part of a bigger picture in the film.

Scott says the character is...

Replacing Sienna Miller in Ridley Scott's NOTTINGHAM could be Oscar winning actress Cate Blanchett.

Mark Strong, who is playing the villainous Guy of Gisbourne in NOTTINGHAM told The Telegraph...
"I think Cate Blanchett is set to take the Maid Marian part...She is a wonderful actress and it would make it a much classier film if she was in it,"
Much classier film?

Is Strong hinting that it was Miller's persona and attitude that lost her the part of Marion earlier this year and not what those gossip rags claimed when they said the love scenes between her and Crowe would look odd because they are on different sides of the weight scale?

Love Blanchett, each and every year she gives a performance which completely shows up her peers. Though in summer blockbuster fare (I thought she was mis-cast in INDIANA JONES IV), we never get to see her best work, but alongside Crowe, I think it will work just fine.

Ridley Scott should direct this movie in the Spring with Russell Crowe leading as both Robin Hood AND The Sheriff of Nottingham.

Brian Helegland (A KNIGHT'S TALE, MYSTIC RIVER) came uop with the story that BULLETPROOF MONK writers Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris turned into a screenplay.

It was true. Universal have yanked THE WOLFMAN from it's first quarter 08 release slot and moved it to November, where the nights are colder and the full moon falls sooner.

The change has been made to help the movie's chances and so that director Joe Johnston doesn't have to rush through post-production. He can take his time for what is said to be a lengthy edit.

Taking it's previous April 3rd slot will be THE FAST AND FURIOUS 4 which was originally to open in June.

Also Universal have announced a unspecified 2010 (probably October or November) for the Russell Crowe led NOTTINGHAM, to be directed by Ridley Scott early next year.

Variety say the weekend of June 12th looks quiet with the release of two comedies NOWHERELAND (Eddie Murphy) and THE PROPOSAL (Sandra Bullock & Ryan Reynolds) now that THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS 4 has moved.

I just wonder if Universal fancy slotting in INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS in that date, just a few weeks after the movie premiere's at Cannes.

UPDATED: I've been informed by Simon at Digital Spy that Strong was misquoted. This revised edition of the article now reflects accurately the actor's quotes.

The versatile Mark Strong for over ten years has been an actor I've greatly admired, he would pop up in all kinds of genre movies, like most British character actors usually do, and completely steal the screen from the bigger "stars" playing opposite them.

But in the last 12 months or so his career has really, really taken off. After playing a big part in BODY OF LIES, director Ridley Scott has hired him again for his next movie NOTTINGHAM where he will play the villainous Guy of Gisbourne.

In the usual Hood folklore, he is the close adviser to the Sheriff of Nottingham who is given the task to aggressively hunt down the outlaw known as Robin Hood. In the much loved Errol Flynn adaptation of the character, Gisbourne is played by the great Basil Rathbone and is the main adversary of Hood but in the 1991 adaptation he is little more than Alan Rickman's man for hire.

Digital Spy carry these quotes from Strong...
"The script is still fluid, but it's essentially the Guy of Gisborne character. ...

Well we knew Ridley Scott's mega ambitious new take on the Robin Hood character was going to be different but I didn't quite expect this.

Scott has told MTV that not only will Russell Crowe be playing the Sheriff of Nottingham in his film, something we have known for two years now but he shall also be playing his usual nemesis, the outlaw Robin Hood. In Scott's take, they are one in the same person (oh and Hood won't be wearing tights, because it's 300 years before they have been invented)...

"He's playing both...a good old clever adjustment of characters. One becomes the other. It changes.
Which explains the original idea when we heard that the Sheriff of Nottingham would actually be a good guy in this film and also explains how they got so close to filming in late Summer without the part of Hood being announced.

So instead of it being Robin of Locksley who gives up his fame, his land and fortune to live with the outlaws in Sherwood Forest, it will be the prosperous, wealthy and politically powered Sheriff. Or will it be the other way around? Surely not, as I wanna see Hood have more screentime than the Sheriff

I got an e-mail mid-day yesterday from a guy whose 'other half' was now out of a job because Ridley Scott's next epic Nottingham had been shut down. Now I can't actually confirm if the guy who mailed me knew of it before The Hollywood Reporter but whoever was first, the result is the same... the movie has been "indefinitely postponed".

Scott's revisionist take of the Robin Hood/Sheriff of Nottingham fable was due to begin production in 2-3 weeks but according to the trade - script problems, location logistics and current labor unrest led to the decision to hault the project. Universal are calling it "the cloud of the SGA strike".

And the delay means the movie won't be shot until at least the Spring because ""the film’s forest locations need to be green," and that won't be the case in Autumn/Winter.

So it's not Christian Bale's problems with the law then, which see's the much rumored choice for the notorious outlaw Robin Hood return to jail in September to hear whether he has been found guilty and what his punishment will be for his alleged abuse of his mother & sister.

We have some further developments on the Robin Hood casting story from Friday, AICN are debunking the rumor that Christian Bale has been offered the part.

Also today, Latino Review are running the scoop of a more conventional casting choice for the film. Someone that actually looks like the image of Robin Hood you probably have in your head.

They say Russell Crowe himself has pitched the idea to Universal and Ridley Scott for them to cast actor Sam Riley, who portrayed Ian Curtis in the much praised biopic of the Joy Division frontman titled Control. It appears Crowe was a big fan of the film and is basing the whole casting choice from that performance alone, which I guess we have to also as Riley hasn't been in much else.

The site claim this source is from a very trusted mole, who has given them some great scoops in the past, including the casting of Jake Gyllenhaal for the Prince of Persia adaptation.

Certainly a more conventional casting choice and I do very much like the idea of a non-star for the part but this guy looks too innocent to me. He looks like someone who carries a great vulnerability on his shoulder ...

Christian Bale could be set to continue his legacy of playing famously iconic and already established cinematic characters on screen if Ridley Scott has his way according to a rumor in the Daily Mail.

They say Scott is desperate to sign up the Welsh actor for his contemporary movie about the Sheriff of Nottingham where Bale would play the iconic character of Robin Hood, depicted here as a notorious and not so sympathetic outlaw.

It's said that costume fittings are beginning next week, so Scott will have to find his man for Hood soon, the paper claiming that it's Bale's role if he wants it.

William Hurt (as King John perhaps or Guy of Gisbourne... maybe Little John - presumably Hood's men are villains too?) and Vanessa Redgrave are also in talks, with the young Academy Award nominated Atonement star Saorise Ronan also on board, apparently of course.

Earlier this week, Sienna Miller joined the cast as Maid Marian. Russell Crowe has been on board for the Sheriff's part since before Ridley Scott joined the project in April 2007.

Of course, it would be a quick reunion for Bale/Crowe who worked extremely well together on the brilliant Western 3:10 to Yuma and would actually be ...

Feisty British actress Sienna Miller will play Robin Hood's love interest Maid Marian in Ridley Scott's epic Nottingham, a movie told from the point of view of the usually evil Sheriff of Nottingham (Russell Crowe).

She said: "It's happening. I just found out. It's the most exciting news in the world. It's ridiculous. But there's this looming actor's strike, so it's not 100% sure that it's going to be made, but it's looking pretty certain."
Universal Pictures are hoping to release the film on November 6th 2009. The script comes from the talented Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential, Mystic River).

Now for me, unlike Robin Hood (who has been forever defined by Errol Flynn) and the Sheriff (likewise for Alan Rickman), there has yet to be a really stand out performance as Maid Marian in any previous adaptation of this material.

Now does Miller really exude any confidence in you believing she might be the first to get this role right?
