Above is a MPAA rejected poster (because apparently your not allowed to hold a gun pointed against someone in a poster) for the crazy looking Werner Herzog movie Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call, a movie that I said 15 months ago was the first American film from the 90's to be remade by Hollywood, but it turns out with heinsight is really just an odd spiritual sequel/re-imagining of the 1992 flick, set in a different city.

But that's all just semantics isn't it?

Anyway, I just wanted to bring attention to how messed up that poster is, and how playing a cop who points a gun at a black hospital nurse and a helpless old lady, truly fits the insane career path that Nicolas Cage has gone down in the past six years or so. I can't remember the last time I felt comfortable watching him on screen, and not reverberating a muffled "HUH" with bug-eyed shock at just what he was projecting on screen.

The movie recently played at the Telluride Film Festival, where Todd McCarthy of Variety said that there's...
"...sort of deadpan zaniness, stemming from a steadfast conviction in its own absurdity, that gives "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans" ...

Last week's 5 month release date delay of The Green Hornet hasn't affected the start date for filming, as principal photography has begun this week on the Columbia Pictures adaptation of the old 60's crime fighting superhero show.

Thankfully for those already getting out the knives from the drawer and giving this movie a premature death, the delay was only to give the guys a longer time on post, to make sure that by the time it rolls out in December 2010, the movie looks like a billion dollars.

Rogen last week told Hitfix that he and co-writer Evan Goldberg were delighted when Columbia agreed to the delay...
"We're both relieved and psyched about the change. It gives more time for post, which would have been immensely rushed if we were to come out in the summer. It also affords us more time to promote the film, (now we can go to Comic-Con with more than a car!) and ultimately is a great vote of confidence from the studio. We got the same date that movies like 'I Am Legend' and 'Avatar' are getting, so we're thrilled to be there."
With casting nearing completion, I thought it was time to look a the main ...

It stole the thunder from Avatar at the San Diego Comic Con and now those much, much, much talked about clips from British director Matthew Vaughn's comic book adaptation of Mark Millar's Kick-Ass have illegally leaked online for all to see, so you best get them while ya can.

Comic Book Movie have them. I'M SERIOUS DON'T SKIP THESE!

Wow... now I see what all the talk was about. I literally laughed my ass off about twelve times, I love that he cut it to John Williams' Superman score. And Nicolas Cage actually looks like he works in this!

Speaking of Superman. Now that comic book writer Mark Millar has revealed that it was Matthew Vaughn that he was collobrating on for his envisioned epic trilogy of the Man of Steel which was ultimately rejected by Warner Bros - who thinks that Vaughn might just become their first choice to make a movie with the character once Kick-Ass has wowed us next year and makes several hundred million dollars for a new comic book character that doesn't have a large legacy or huge fanbase?

Probably in my top three most anticipated movies in development right now. Can't wait for this.

I have studied the Bible, the Qur'an, and even bits and pieces of the Book of Mormon. All major religions have some sort of belief in apocalyptic events that will end the world as we know it. In light of that background, it's been interesting to see how horrific spectacles like the 9/11 terrorist attacks on America have influenced the arts, and in particular, movies.

Since 2001, we have seen a rush of films that have played on the fears that such beliefs and events conjure in our psyche. We can't just have a movie that features a villain ... now the villain is Armageddon, or an unstoppable force ready to destroy mankind. It's as if the stakes need to be raised to the greatest degree in order to have any impact anymore; we've already seen monumental and cataclysmic nightmares play out on our television screens, so anything at the movies needs to be even larger and more terrifying.

Even though we've recently had several years of Hollywood-sized, Earth-threatening disaster movies at the multiplexes, I would venture that none of them can compare to the pure nerve of the new Alex Proyas film Knowing.

Jeffrey Wells over at Hollywood Elsewhere correctly called it ...

Columbia Pictures are moving ahead with a sequel to the 2007 Nicolas Cage movie which earned $228 million worldwide from a budget of $110 million.

It was enough to call the movie a success and director Mark Steven Johnson looks to be getting a sequel to this Marvel character, unlike DAREDEVIL which despite it's problems was a far superior film and had lots more room for sequel improvement.

"What happens when the numbers run out?"
which I can still hear in a monotone Nicolas Cage line reading from the trailer, is the first official poster for KNOWING, next March's disaster epic which reminds me of Steven Spielberg's WAR OF THE WORLDS poster.

Not a complete rip-off but you will admit that similarities do exist?

Really disliked the trailer and I feel like I've seen enough of these cryptic, end of the world conspiracy theory movies. Putting Nicolas Cage's character from NATIONAL TREASURE into the sci-fi/disaster environment doesn't excite me one smidgen.

But the attachment of director Alex Proyas (DARK CITY, I, ROBOT) gives me hope. I once called him the only saviour of sci-fi in modern day filming (that was during James Cameron's break from movie making), lets hope that statement carries some vindication.

Rookie scribe Jeremy Passmore has revealed to CHUD the details of John Carpenter's proposed gangster movie THE PRINCE which the duo have been developing together over the last few years.

They call it UNFORGIVEN as a "gangster movie".

"It's definitley more of a very character based crime movie. I don't know what's going on with it right now, but the premise is that this guy was the most [badass] gangster of all time in Las Vegas, and he's left the life and created this whole new world. His wife died but he's raising his kid. He's living in the middle of nowhere and he's this very religious, trying to live a straight life guy. His daughter is now going to school at UCLA and she disappears, and he goes looking for her. The trail leads to Vegas and he has to go get her, and the entire city kind of comes down on top of him".
Carpenter is currently in pre-production on RIOT, his first movie in seven years which he has been trying to sell financing for at the AFM. It's a prison movie that follows lifer Nicolas Cage who comes to the aid of the governor's delinquent son who is sent ...

But not even that fact is getting me down. Carpenter (THE THING, HALLOWEEN, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13) is making a movie RIGHT NOW!

Previously titled SCARED STRAIGHT, the movie is a prison thriller about a lifer (Cage) who befriends a younger inmate on a short term "delinquent teens" sentence and shows him the ways of prison life.

The very early promo poster comes from the American Film Market expo.

Ron L. Brinkerhoff (THE GUARDIAN) wrote the screenplay with first time screenwriter Joe Gazam. The movie is currently in pre-production for a release next year.

The movie is SEASON OF THE WITCH and thankfully has nothing to do with HALLOWEEN III: SEASON OF THE WITCH.

Story chronicles the journey of 14th century knights transporting a girl suspected of being the witch responsible for spreading the Black Plague.
Bragi Schut Jr, the creator of the t.v. show THERESHOLD wrote the screenplay. Shooting will begin in Austria and Hungary in early November after the always busy Cage has finished filming his role in KICK-ASS.

Matt here,… extremely excited to report that the new Matthew Vaughn picture has begun filming!

I hope that he knocks one so far out of the ballpark, so far out of this God damned Universe with Kick-Ass, that it shows Marvel what a big mistake they made by not financing his vision for Thor. What a big, big mistake that could be once Marvel hires a director who hasn't got a clue what the word epic means.

Sure Vaughn didn't get the luck with the box office returns of Stardust but that was more down to the crappy way it was marketed by Paramount.

So filming has begun on Kick-Ass and today brings us our first look at Nicolas Cage as "Big Daddy" from the film described as "about comic book guys, made by comic book guys"...

Mark Millar, the Scottish born comic book writer who wrote Wanted and the comic book upon this movie was based, blogged about the first two days of filming on his own personal site...
This is the one. I hereby declare Kick-Ass as the greatest movie of 2009.

And if you think that I WOULD so that as co-creator and a producer on the movie you're absolutely, one hundred percent ...

There was a time when I thought Nicolas Cage was Kick-Ass, when I thought he was one of the coolest guys in Hollywood. Somewhere around the turn of the Millennium, it might have been after The Family Man that all changed and gradually he has become a Hollywood joke.

I'm dumbfounded that after the his performances in The Wicker Man, World Trade Center, Ghost Rider and Next all in quick succession that in the last 12 months he has managed to convince well respected directors Alex Proyas, Werner Herzog, John Carpenter and Roman Polanksi to use him in their upcoming films.

I can't understand how he still keeps getting cast by when he has done NOTHING in the last five or six years to warrant this. It's happened again this week. The Hollywood Reporter say he will have a supporting role in Kick-Ass, the third movie from Matthew Vaughn which will begin filming in the Autumn.

Cage will play an ex-cop who has trained his young daughter (Chloe Mortez) to become a lethal weapon.

First Werner Herzog, and now another veteran who should know better has cast the almost useless Nicolas Cage for an upcoming thriller.

This time it's John Carpenter but let's be honest, he has hardly been sane for years.

The movie is Scared Straight, a Nu Image/Millennium Films Production that for the umpteenth time will see Cage serving jail time (Con Air, Raising Arizona, Face/Off, The Rock)...
Straight" follows a troubled youth who's sent to prison off the Scared Straight crime-prevention program, which imprisons delinquent teens for a short period in the hopes of deterring them from a life of crime. While the teen is there, a riot breaks out and the prisoners take him hostage. A lifer, played by Cage, is forced to help the young man out.
Joe Gazzam wrote the original spec script which has since been redrafted by Ron Brinkenhoff (The Guardian).

An October start date is planned. Apparently the movie was originally a Rob Cohen project, which further fuels my argument that Carpenter has gone insane.

If the movie does actually get made, it will Carpenter's first since 2001's Ghosts of Mars.

It would appear that not even good directors are not immune to the Nicolas Cage infection of studio hackery. The great sci-fi director Alex Proyas (Dark City, I, Robot) looks to have churned in his most banal and redundant effort to date, with Cage once again giving us a one-note performance with his monotone voice.

It's pretty clear that without the likeable Will Smith covering up any problems with his last sci-fi effort, Proyas is not going to have the same kind of luxury here.

This is what I said back in March when I briefly talked about the film...
For my money there isn’t a more boring lead actor on the planet right now than Nicolas Cage and his inability to get through expedition dialogue without making you fall asleep has always been his big hindrance in this genre.
Now you watch this trailer below and you tell me if that statement is not 100% true. His voice can't see him through plot dialogue, why do the trailers for his films always sound like spoofs?

National Treasure meets The Number 23? What a horrible thought.
"What happens when the numbers run out?"
Has their been a more boring and pathetic end trailer tease this year?
This movie ...

An increasingly heavier Val Kilmer has joined the cast of Werner Herzog's remake but not a remake of the Harvey Keitel early 90's thriller Bad Lieutenant.

He will play partner to Nicolas Cage, a cop on the edge who is investigating the drug-related murder of five Senegalese illegal immigrants. Eva Mendes joined the cast last month.

The Hollywood Reporter also kindly tell us that rapper Xzibit who can next be seen in The X-Files: I Want to Believe, will play one of the bad guys, Big Fade.

Other castings include Brad Dourif, Jennifer Coolidge, Denzel Whitaker and more!

The movie is expected to shoot this summer and is a Nu Image/Millennium Films production.

The great Roman Polanski has begun casting his next film, the political thriller The Ghost - an adaptation of a Robert Harris novel which has still yet to make it to paperback.

I'm interested in reading it but I'm such a tight git at the moment and besides, hardbacks or even over sized paperbacks as I recall this one being, aren't as easy to carry around. So I haven't parted with my cash for it yet, in other words.

According to MTV, Pierce Brosnan (as fictional leader Prime Minister Adam Lang) and Nicolas Cage (as his ghostwriter) will lead the film...
Inspired in part by Tony Blair, the novel picks up steam when the ghostwriter learns privileged details about a scandal which threatens to engulf the ex-Prime Minister. Soon, he finds himself in personal jeopardy, and must learn to balance his commitments to Lang with his own safety.
You may remember, the project came about in November when Polanski had failed to get the adaptation of the epic historical fiction novel Pompeii off the ground, which was also written by Harris. Polanski was then advised to read his latest book The Ghost, and he loved it.

Polanski had been searching for some time for a ...

Werner Herzog has truly gone crazy with his upcoming Bad Lieutenant. Not sufficed with casting the least interesting A-list Hollywood star around as his lead but now he has gone out and offered a part to Eva Mendes, with whom said actor Nicolas Cage struggled to generate even a spark of chemistry with in Ghost Rider.

This comes just a week or two after Herzog claimed his version of Bad Lieutenant wasn't a remake which is an outright lie as far as I'm concerned because the Harvey Keitel original was not based on a book or any other form of source material, so if you are borrowing the title and basic concept of the film then no matter how different it may be... it is still a remake.

Cage knows this more than most. His embarrassing turn in The Wicker Man in 2006 was a remake despite the big changes to the plot, tone and narrative.

So it's Eva Mendes then, as long as she accepts the role for the Nu Image/Millennium Production which shoots late summer. Herzog, quite remarkably, got a stunning performance out of limited comedic actor Steve Zahn in the brilliant Rescue Dawn - but he has now given himself ...

Comparing his upcoming police thriller Bad Lieutenant with the Bond series, master director Werner Herzog tells Coming Soon that fans of the original Harvey Keitel movie of the same name need not worry.

It's not Herzog's intention to rape the original, as his movie is not in fact a remake - as like the 007 films, it will just have character traits from the previous film and won't be exactly the same.

"No, it's not a remake," he told us quite adamantly. "You have to delete that from your memory, though we may not be able to delete it from public perception. It's like I keep saying, 'A James Bond film, the newest one, is not a remake of the previous one; it's a completely different story.' It only has a corrupt policeman as the central character and that's about it."
He goes to on to say that he was handpicked for the film by Nicolas Cage and was flattered when the actor came to him with the project. Production is expected to begin soon on the project.

Ok so it's not a remake... then my question is why take the name of the original movie? Why not call it something different and just ...

From Cannes where the remake of the Harvey Keitel thriller Bad Lieutenant, believed by me to be the first Hollywood and English language film from the 90's to ever be remade (let's hope it does not start a trend) and shockingly by the master that is Werner Herzog - comes our first teaser poster.

The film will star Nicolas Cage as a corrupt New York City police detective Terence McDonough investigated the drug-related murder of five Senegalese illegal immigrants. It's Cage third remake in a short period after The Wicker Man and the upcoming Bangkok Dangerous.

The script comes from frequent t.v. scribe William M. Finkelstein (Law & Order, Murder One).

It's a very early teaser poster, only churned out to try and win some buyers for the film at Cannes but having said that we have to review only on what it looks like - and that's a STV thriller.

This will be Herzog's next movie after the quite magnificent Rescue Dawn and it should be out next year.

Werner Herzog, the genius German director who doesn't so much grow with every movie he makes but instead sticks to the incredibly high level he set himself to some decades ago and never seems to have a dip in form.

He is Mr. Consistent. He puts out nothing less than a four star movie each and every time he picks up the camera.

BUT, having said that... he is giving himself a challenge here.

The word has leaked from Variety that Herzog will remake the 1992 thriller Bad Lieutenant - a no-holds barred NC-17 movie (looks a little Taxi Driver-ish) made at the height of a resurgence in the career of it's lead Harvey Keitel shortly after Reservoir Dogs and before his Academy Award friendly turn in The Piano.

Herzog will be remaking the movie with Nicolas Cage and production will begin in the summer...
Edward R. Pressman producing and Avi Lerner's Nu Image/Millenium Films financing.

The original film, also produced by Pressman, starred Harvey Keitel and was directed by Abel Ferrara from a screenplay by Ferrara and Zoe Lund. That film received an NC-17 rating with the depraved title character heavily involved in drugs, gambling, sex and stealing while a New York police officer.

Good god, they just aren't even trying here are they?

Here's a poster for the latest Nicolas Cage thriller The Bangkok Dangerous.

Now there's two kinds of Nicolas Cage movies. The one's that are uber popular and hit a mass audience like Ghost Rider and the National Treasure movies but then there's the AWFUL career choices this guy makes with stuff like The Wicker Man remake and Next.

Now which category do you think this movie will fall into...

The movie is actually a remake of a 1999 Thai thriller shot by the same directors Oxide Pang Chun and Danny Pang who would later go on to direct the much more well known horror flicks The Eye (Asian version), The Eye 2 and last year's quite awful Hollywood horror The Messengers.

The Bangkok Dangerous is a little like Michael Mann's Collateral, in that an assassin travels to Thailand to complete a series of contract killings and hires an errand boy to help cover his tracks with the idea that he will kill him once he is done... which is kinda what Tom Cruise tried to do with Jamie Foxx.

There's no other recognisable Hollywood faces in the movie (hence the poster I guess) but surely they ...
