It's back. After literally no clamour whatsoever following it's accidental disappearance, the DVD Lowdown sneaks back onto the site from its enforced sabatical- technical issues made it even later, but better to be fashionably late than non-existant. Happy goggling...

Notorious

Musical biopics seem to occupy more and more space within my DVD collection these days- some rightly so (Ray), and some somewhat inexplicably (I seriously own What's Love Got to Do With It?). On the merit of Biggy's personal history- his story, like Ray Charles' is just full enough of conflict and adversity to warrant the big-screen treatment- Notorious probably belongs to the first category, though it does distractingly feel a little too much like a music video at times (see 8 Mile). The other major problem is the overall naivety of it- the film runs a little cack-handed throughout, and initially feels as if it has been made by first time film-makers without the necessary credentials that their vision needed.

No matter how I feel about this film, at the end of the day, I simply cannott say it any better than our very own Ray did in his review.

Available on Blu-Ray and DVD now.

Here we have NICK AND NORAH'S INFINITE PLAYLIST, or Exhibit A if you will. Exhibit A forms part of a body of evidence that JUNO has somehow changed the US film industry's idea of what anything targeted at teens should look and act like. With cast members headed by Michael Cera and Kat Dennings, the spearhead of the post-JUNO 'quirky movie' movement this was always going to be seen as a healthy young descendant of the original teen kook movie, but there's more than just the cast to suggest an affinity with this burgeoning brand that has sprouted movies including CHARLIE BARTLETT, SUPERBAD (technically on a par with JUNO in creating this shift), THE HOUSE BUNNY and more. The film focuses on a few unique individuals among the high school crowd, each with their own take on the world and each with their own personal gripes with the 'normals' around them. An interesting diversion from, or development from, this basis is that rather than challenge the system in a head-on 'aren't we different' kind of way, these outsiders have found themselves a niche New York: one which the film allows us to revel in.

The plot follows angst-ridden teen Nick and ...

Phillip Lybrand, aka The Tuscon Filmmaker has sent us in this early review of NICK AND NORAH'S INFINITE PLAYLIST which played at the Toronto International Film Festival recently and has been, rather unfairly one would think, compared to last year's Academy Award nominated JUNO.
We have been tracking the project since the get go, I had my money on this being a big hit but only last month when the trailer was released, I was surprised how mundane and ordinary it looked. Here's Phillip's review, remember you too can send us reviews of anything you have seen HERE.

If you're reading this, then you can clearly see that your hunger for block letters on movie posters will soon be fed. NICK AND NORAH'S INFINITE PLAYLIST opens the first week of October, and fortunately, it brings with it a lot more than a hip graphic designer.

Based on the the novel by the same name, 'NICK AND NORAH' chronicles the budding romance of two high school seniors searching the streets of NYC for clues that could lead them to a super secret show by their mutually favorite Indie rock band. And, as with all coming of age teeny love stories, [trailer voice] ...

The trailer for Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist is online, the next movie from the dangerously typecast Michael Cera whose woman of affection this time is The 40 Year Old Virgin's Kat Dennings.

The book from Rachel Cohn and David Levithan has a big legion of fans and although I was expecting something more along the lines of High Fidelity or a Cameron Crowe picture when the movie was first announced, I think we have ended up with... well I don't know what we have here.

But I kinda like it. A few moments that made me chuckle, especially the cab bit. This project is still groovy...

SEE IT IN HD HERE
You can see Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist from October in the U.S and 30th January in the U.K
