According to the Hollywood Reporter, Hong Kong action auteur John Woo has been inspired by the Olympic Games to make a sports-themed film. In an innovative twist, the director aims to use real athletes as the key actors in the project.

Though producing partner Terence Chang has played down Woo’s proclamation, delivered at a Beijing charity dinner, as “probably wishful thinking”, the Hong Kong legend appeared eager as he stated...
“I have wanted to produce a sports-themed movie for some time now. I want real athletes to be my lead actors so that we can portray the athlete's spirit accurately.”
Considering the huge buzz around the recent Beijing Olympics and the vast medal haul taken by the host nation it’s unsurprising that Woo’s imagination has been captivated. The director of The Killer and Face/Off names double gold medal-winning diver Guo Jingjing and hurdling icon Liu Xiang as two ideal cast members, though he can effectively pick and choose with the amount of sporting talent available in China.

Any Olympic endeavour won’t materialise until after the Hard-Boiled director has completed work on 1949, a historical epic based around the Communist revolution which is currently in pre-production. Woo is also set to make a sequel to ...

Zodiac star Mark Ruffalo is making the early career move into directing.

Variety say his debut film as a helmsman will be Sympathy for Delicious, an adaptation of an original screenplay from Chris Thornton (first time scribe who was worked various jobs on film sets including grip, visual effects and production assistant) which will begin shooting in the fall in L.A.

New company Corner Store Entertainment will finance, Thornton and Ruffalo will both star, as will Spider-Man's James Franco.

Thornton in his first acting role to date will play "Delicious" Dean O'Dwyer, a wheelchair bound DJ who is struggling to survive in L.A. He turns to faith-healing and remarkably acquires the ability to cure sick people - though ironically not himself.

Ruffalo will pay a Jesuit Priest who attempts to help him come to terms with both the wonders and the limitations of his gift and Franco will play a rock star that exploits the every growing famous healer.

I have no idea where this Chris Thornton guy has come from and a few minutes of searching in google has found nothing. Can the guy write, can he act, what does he look like?

Jackie Chan is not ready to give up on his Hollywood action comedies just yet, The Hollywood Reporter say he has just signed on to star in The Spy Next Door - a Relativity Media production for director Brian Levant.

Levant is a veteran of family comedies, in fact he has never done anything else. His CV reads Beethoven, Jingle all the Way, The Flintstones, Problem Child 2, Snow Dogs and Are We There Yet?

In a project that sounds undoubteledy like it was written for Chan, the movie centers on him as a guy called in to baby-sit his neighbour's children but has to fight off secret agents who come to attack the home after one of the kids accidently downloads a secret Government code from the web

The script was written by Jonathan Bernstein and Jim Greer (they came up with the story for Just My Luck)
and should be Chan's next movie after his upcoming drama The Shinjuku Incident due out in Hong Kong next month

Now there's a film title to get assess in seats. The Hollywood Reporter say Warner Bros. have acquired the screen rights to Drink, Play F@#k, a male comedic retort to the best selling female driven book Eat, Pray, Love, of which it shares no official connection.

I.E. - it's not a sequel to that book, which itself is already being setup as a movie at Brad Pitt's Plan B at Paramount with Julia Roberts attached to star since October 2006.

Andrew Gottlieb's upcoming novel follows Bob Sullivan, a guy who seeks solace after his wife leaves him, journeying on a bender in Ireland, a gambling session in L.A. and a sex hunting tourism trip to Thailand.
The novel should hit stands early next year but is now available to pre-order at Amazon.
In comparison, the memoirs from Elizabeth Gilbert - Eat, Pray, Love - focuses on an author's journey of peace through several stages of living after a painful divorce. More dramatic than comedic, she seeks culinary solace in Italy, spiritual healing in Indiana and a romantic respite in Indonesia.
Interesting to see which of the two similar sounding books gets made first, being a guy I'm more inclined to hope I get to enjoy ...

Story chronicles the final year of high school for Miki Yoshida, the series’ protag who tries to befriend handsome new student Hiro Sakurai but is met with resistance. Stubborn Miki, however, refuses to take no for an answer, which leads to a surprising revelation about the secretive young man.
The book was first published in May of last year...

Danish director Nikolaj Arcel will helm a Hollywood remake of his own 2007 action/adventure film Island of Lost Souls, one of the highest grossing picture's in Denmark last year.

Universal Pictures and Strike Entertainment are behind the project, with unknown scribe Jennifer O'Kieffe adapting.
The story centers on a suburban teen who finds herself a central player in a centuries-old battle between good and evil when her younger brother is possessed by the benevolent spirit of an 18th century magician.
Once again, one wonders why a theatrical release of a recent and evidently popular foreign language film couldn't be re-released around the rest of the world with a heavy marketing campaign.

Pan's Labyrinth did pretty good didn't it?

Alex Winter, the writer/actor who played the less famous title character in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure and it's sequel has been hired to scribe a remake of Rock 'N' Roll High School, the original 1979 musical film from Roger Corman.

Howard Stern and Larry Levinson are producing say Variety.

The original film was about a group of rebellious students who put an end to a repressed and non music loving principal - with a little help from The Ramones.

Recently Winter has moved further and further into writing and directing, with a feature about Napster and its creator upcoming for MTV Films and behind the camera he is set to shoot a comedy with Alan Rickman titled We're Here to Help.

"I've now done so much stuff in musicvideos, and the Napster movie, that the chance to bridge music and comedy was something that intrigued me," Winter said. "This movie seemed so ripe for a remake."

Warner Bros. are making a movie about Marvin the Martian!

Sadly, the movie will be packaged as a Christmas release with the gimmick finds Marvin trapped in a gift box when he attempts to destroy Earth. It will be live action blended with CGI and will be aimed at the very young age group of movie-goers.

The $359 million grossing worldwide audience of Alvin and the Chipmunks for example.

Marvin the Martian was created by Chuck Jones and he made his first appearance in a Looney Tunes cartoon way back in 1948. The character never got old or at least he never did when I was younger, his plot was almost always to blow up Earth, only to be foiled by Bugs Bunny.

It is a shame because I think if they were smart about this they could have come up with something that would be accessible to kids and have something their for adults too, but sadly the poor mum's and dad's who have to see this crap will be tortured for two hours.

In their first deal since former New Line founders Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne found their company absorbed by Warner Bros, the veteran producers have signed on to adapt Isaac Asimov's futuristic sci-fi epic Foundation - that they'll produce through their new Unique Features banner.

Warner Bros. will market and distribute according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Asimov was the writer of the collection of short stories that was loosely adapted into the very cool summer blockbuster I, Robot starring Will Smith in 2004, which grossed $347 million worldwide. This series is based on a trilogy of books and it's presumed that if the first adaptation is successful, the rest will soon follow.

"Foundation" is based on Asimov's "Foundation Trilogy," which centers on a society that has figured out how to predict the future based on a method called psychohistory and sets up a foundation devoted to scientific research to protect itself and ensure its survival.
Shaye and Lynne of course found their most success at the beginning of this Millennium with the ambitious Lord of the Rings trilogy but several mis-dealings and terrible project choices such as the over-blown The Golden Compass put their company out of business as a solo company earlier this ...

There's been a recent surge in popularity with writers for adapting to film classic episodes of what I believe is the greatest television show ever made, The Twilight Zone.

There are no less than three movies based on episodes of the series currently in the works, including two adapted from the great writer Richard Matheson - The Box and Countdown.

But now Leonardo DiCaprio has gone one step further. He has teamed up with Warner Bros. to seek the best pitches to adapt into one or more features which would carry one solid storyline, a homage to his favourite show as a kid. They have put the word out to writers everywhere to pitch "Twilight Zone-esque" themed scripts, which could be adapted from any of the show's storylines or more loosely in the same vein as the atmosphere of the show.

Warner Bros. own the rights to Rod Serling's 155 episode masterpiece series.

A Twilight Zone film is already a part of history. A joint project in 1983 from Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante, John Landis and George Miller resulted in a disappointing mediocre effort and not up to the great standard of what Serling originated in the 50's.

Well, we all know it sucks as ...

Bryan Singer has optioned another comic book series to adapt for film. His company Bad Hat Harry Productions has teamed with Radical Pictures to adapt the five issue comic book series Freedom Formula for the big screen, which is described as a futuristic "Top Gun".

In this world racing exo-suits have replaced fighter jets, with the story focusing on a genetically engineered racer who learns that his bloodline has the power to change society. It's described as a character driven flick with awesome set pieces.

It's the second big deal in a week for Singer, who will only produce this material. He also optioned the upcoming comic book series Capeshooters on Wednesday.

Talking to Variety...
"This is a timeless story about young people struggling to break free of authority. That's what ultimately appealed to me," Singer said.

It was promoted as thus...
THE MOST MAGNIFICENT & THRILLING SEA ADVENTURE EVER FILMED!
The movie was the awesome titled Captain Blood, the first movie made by the trio Errol Flynn, Basil Rathbone and director Michael Curtiz, and one of the greatest adventure films of the 20th century.

That was of course three years before the trio made The Adventures of Robin Hood, the ABSOLUTE greatest adventure movie of the 20th century!
Anyway, in this remake obsessed land, the word out of Variety is that veteran filmmaker Phillip Noyce (Catch a Fire, Clear and Present Danger, The Bone Collector, The Saint, Patriot Games, Dead Calm) is adapting a remake with a view to direct at Warner Bros.
That's all we know right now, except that it's been setup as a potential U.K/Australia production.

How unsurprising it is I find myself today writing about another musical remake, it's soon getting to the point where I can't name any musicals that have yet to be remade in one form or another.

MTV this time are the studio getting in on the act. Variety say they have optioned a remake of the 70's cult classic (the movie possibly defines the word cult) The Rocky Horror Picture Show and they aren't even going to bother updating the script!

They are literally going to shoot from what Jim Sharman and Richard O'Brien wrote in the 70's, with a couple of new songs here and there.

How lazy can you get?

Lox Adler, who produced the original film way back when is on board. The MTV project will be co-financed by BermanBraun and Fox Television Studios along with the BSkyB and Sky Movies, who would also distribute.

It sounds like the movie will be a made for t.v. production, which if all goes to plan will be shown Halloween 09 in both the U.S. and the U.K.

The original film starred Tim Curry in the most memorable performance of his career as Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a absolutely bizarre Transylvanian transvestite who make life hell for the ...

New Line's near saviour as a company last year was Hairspray, the adaptation of John Waters musical which earned $200 million worldwide and was a huge Christmas seller for both the DVD and soundtrack CD.

But of course mega failings elsewhere, most notably the multi-million loss The Golden Compass meant an end to the four decade old studio, which was gobbled up by Warner Bros.

WB, never missing out on a money making venture... have convinced Waters to write a sequel with early hints that director Adam Shankman, the producers and songwriters would return for another song and dance.

The next task for the studio is to convince the major stars from the original film to return as a sequel was never originally planned, none of them had such a deal in their contracts.

A release date of July 2010 has been tentatively scheduled.
"I never thought of musicals as franchises, but it certainly worked with ‘High School Musical,’ and the idea of working with that cast again, and creating new material and music, is a dream come true," Shankman told Daily Variety. "John (Waters) has such an original and extraordinary voice; we all can’t wait to see what he has come up with.
Has their ...

Peter Berg (Hancock, The Kingdom) is already attached to remake the fantasy movie Dune for Paramount but today comes news of a potentially bigger epic. It's been announced that Universal have hired the helmer to spearhead a new movie based on the famous legend of Greek mythology, Hercules.

The project is based on the new 5 issue comic book series that debuted in May from Steve Moore.

The movie will be titled Hercules: The Thracian Wars (what's wrong with just Hercules) and will be co-financed by Spyglass Entertainment and produced by Berg's own Film 44 and Radical Pictures

MMM, I love the Hercules character - I've always found him more fascinating than the likes of Conan and the writings of Robert E. Howard but I'm not sure Berg is the man here. If his last two movies have shown us anything it's that Berg is a terrific director of action sequences but hasn't got a clue narratively how to direct a blockbuster movie or epic sized movie.

And his directing is so modern, he feels like an MTV director. Would that suit a movie about Greek mythology, I'm not so sure?

As the Hercules character is in the public domain, the rival project from writer ...

Bryan Singer is turning nasty, he's no longer interested in movies about the superheroes of the X-Men and Superman franchise. Oh no, the next comic book project we will see with his name attached will be much darker.

Variety say he will produce but not direct Capeshooters, a new movie from Warner Bros. based on the upcoming comic creation by Rob Liefeld, the former Marvel Comics artist who left to become co-founder of Image Comics.

In Capeshooters, two slackers shoot guerilla style footage of superheroes but find themselves in all kinds of trouble when they shoot evidence that a superhero is actually a bad guy villain. Presumably, the villain doesn't want that evidence to get out and he does everything in his power to stop it.

J.P. Lavin and Chad Damiani, two producers who worked on the show Anchorwomen will adapt the screenplay.

Don't mind the idea behind the plot, can't get excited over the chosen writers though. Would have loved to see Singer direct this actually, and with a little less pressure prove to us that he still has something to say in this genre as the future of the Superman franchise hangs up in the air.

Terminator Salvation and W. producers Moritz Borman and Peter Graves have somehow found time to put another project into development.

They have acquired the rights to Jon Land's novel The Seven Sins: The Tyrant Ascending, an action thriller published last month which centers on a Las Vegas casino owner who is the adopted son of an Italian crime lord whose casino comes under attack from terrorists

The novel is loosely based on the life of Las Vegas entrepreneur Fabrizio Boccardi's, who financed and has promoted the book, which is designed to be the first of a big franchise.

Here's Boccardi and the author to tell you more about the book...

No studio is attached as of yet, the producers wish to wait until they have more of the project developed - possibly until they have a writer or director interested.

Take your mind to March 5th 2008 and the mass Internet speculation which arose when Two Time Academy Award nominated Gladiator and Blood Diamond actor Djimon Hounsou mentioned in an interview he was soon set to star in a film based off the Conan comic books, what he called his "dream project".

Originally, we thought it could actually be the newly resurrected Conan series at Millennium which then had no actor attached and that despite his race, he was a great build to either play Conan himself or a villain.

Today though the mystery has been solved. He will play big screen sorcerer Thulsa Doom in a big screen movie based on the character that is usually a big villain in the Conan and Kull comic books. The project is being setup by Dynamite Entertainment who are also producing a new comic series of the character next year.

This new origin movie will focus on the character's journey into villainy, a flawed hero who had good intentions but slowly descended to the dark side, ala Anakin Skywalker, Magneto and Harvey Dent.

No film studio is actually attached as of yet, but you have to expect it will be Nu Image/Millennium as they already have ...

Universal Pictures have attached Tobey Maguire to star in The Crusaders, a movie about the landmark 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education Case that declared state laws which had established separate public schools for black and white children, had denied black children equal educational opportunities.
The unanimous decision from the court was "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal."

Maguire will play Jack Greenberg, an idealistic lawyer fresh out of law school who spearheaded the victory against segregation in American schools. The movie is based on his memoirs Crusaders in the Court.

Gary Ross will direct, having previously worked with Maguire in his two most famous non-Spidey movies, Pleasantville and Seabiscuit. Former Buffy the Vampire slayer actor and Recount scribe Danny Strong will scribe - he is also an alumni actor from Ross' previous films.

Important story and historical moment in U.S. history, well worthy of it's translation to screen even if it will be a dialogue heavy courtroom drama. Can Maguire really pull this kind of material off, a "Tom Cruise" style performance in A Few Good Men?

Ross sure has great faith in him, I can't say I'm fully convinced.
