What has happened to the horror villains of the 80s? Once upon a time we had Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers, Charles Lee Ray (Chucky) and, of course, Jason and Mrs. Vorhees. This decade was the heyday for character-driven horrors that saw a particular spectre terrorise the lives of innocent civilians. Nowadays we just can't match that kind of wild imagination, we are stuck with churned out remakes (we've seen MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3-D and FRIDAY THE 13th already in the last month) or botched reworkings of Asian psychological and supernatural horrors (let's just not watch THE UNINVITED). The only thing that came close was SAW's Jigsaw, but he's been dragged on for so long that even some original fans have drifted away from the franchise. So where did it all go wrong?

The horror villain has been around for as long as horror itself, so there's no point going way back. But the orgiastic killing held together purely by a frightening and well-constructed killing machine began to take shape in the 70s. Gone were all the draculas and mummies and indiscriminate ghosts, they metamorphosed into something far less recognisable. Ghosts inhabited bodies which themselves became scary, like in THE EXORCIST, and ...

It's tempting to say 'they don't make them like this anymore' about MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3-D, but that would not strictly be true. Firstly, they do make them like this, there are a lot of gory slasher remakes that attempt to revisit the fun of horrors before they became template nonsense with no imagination (excluding the recent output from Asia that's been so heavily cannibalised by the West). Secondly, in some ways they never did make movies like this. That's right, I'm actually saying this 80's slasher remake is ORIGINAL! And here's why:

Back in the 80s horrors were two things: concept and character based. Films had reached a peak with the riotous imagination of characters like Freddy Krueger, Jason and Michael Myers and the orgiastic scare-fests of movies like POLTERGEIST and THE EXORCIST. They had evolved as cleverer, more technologically savvy versions of B-movie classics that combined the joyous fear of an otherworldly monster with all of the might that the height of technology could muster. However, from here the story turns a little sour. To trump these things, directors tried to get clever. Essentially SCREAM messed it all up.

In realising what it was that had made horror great, directors ...

More movies that bring back the fun of going to the cinema, that's exactly what we need.

Don't get me wrong, I'm positive Lionsgate's January horror offering MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D will suck as a movie. It's one of those slasher remakes of a shitty 80's movie but the added gimmick of 3D, which they are not so subtly promoting as the sole reason to see the movie... is actually kind of fun.

It harbours back to the best of 50's and 60's horror producer William Castle, whose added theatrical gimmicks, as radical as paying fake audience members to faint during screenings to get himself press attention, gave his movies the aura of something you just had to see.

I don't think the 3D gimmick will get too many more audience members in the theatre these days and certainly not in such an ordinary looking slasher film but there might be some fun sequences...

Patrick Lussier who has struggled to make a horror hit with his previous directorial vehicles DRACULA 2000 (and it's two sequels) and WHITE NOISE 2... directs. The pretty cast of Jaime King, Jensen Ackles (Jesus, some of you wanted THAT guy as Captain America??) and FINAL DESTINATION'S Kerr Smith star.
The ...

Lionsgate are remaking a relatively unknown 1981 slasher movie titled My Bloody Valentine and have secured the usual "straight to video" director Patrick Lussier (White Noise 2, Dracula 2000) to helm and Sin City actress Jaime King to star.

The Hollywood Reporter say the remake will have 3D added to the title. Jeez!

The movie is about a murderer who kills those who celebrate Valentine's Day.
She will play Sarah Palmer, a woman who has married her teenage sweetheart's nemesis, and the pair have a child together. When she and her first love are reunited, it becomes clear that she still carries a torch for the man.
The original is not a movie I've ever seen but when they are throwing around the gimmick of 3D in the title you know that you maybe should avoid the feature.

The screenplay comes from newcomer Zane Smith & Jason X writer Todd Farmer and will begin production in May for a release next January.

Aren't slasher films so 80's, and late 90's?

Do we even care about them now?

Will this even make it to the theatre anyway... if not the 3D gimmick is rather pointless.
