I'm such a Tim Burton mark but folks I will tell ya, it's been way too long until I've actually come out of a Burton film feeling the way I use to after watching ED WOOD, his BATMAN movies, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS and the like.

He's flirted with me with his CV, with projects that totally reach out to my liking (PLANET OF THE APES, CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY) and actors I admire and stories I adore. He knows what I like, decides to adapt or remake it and promises that he will deliver the goods to me in the theatre but sadly I've walked away disappointed.

SWEENEY TODD is a fable I've long since enjoyed and wanted to see adapted in a big way on screen. The material just seems like perfect Burton fodder but sadly my reaction to the the clips I've seen at this point have made the film look severely disjointed and odd looking.

However, the early word is it's pretty damn awesome...
SWEENEY TODD is Tim Burton's best film since ED WOOD... Harry Knowles, AICN

I couldn't believe it...a Tim Burton film that reverses the decline! Call me a changed man. Call Burton a changed man. ...

I must admit, I do like this little clip from the film. It doesn't feel as awkward as some of those moments in the trailer and Depp & Carter look more alive here.

Depp's singing voice is actually pretty impressive, though his accent and power I'm not so sure about.

I really hated the trailer that was released a while back but clips like this showing extended actual moments from the fiilm is always going to be more of an indicator of the final film.

Depp's acting we know should be there but can his voice (which is impressive for a non-singer) carry the whole film when it opens this Christmas?

Ok, so in the same story from Variety that discussed the delaying of the Johnny Depp picture SHANTARAM comes word that Rob Marshall's musical NINE starring Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem, Sophia Loren and Marion Cotillard has also been delayed because of the strike.

The script set up with the Weinsteins just simply wasn't ready.

The trade claim that Anthony Minghella (COLD MOUNTAIN, THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY) had only three days to write a polish to Michael Tolkin's (CHANGING LANES) original script and it was always going to be a near impossible task to get it 100% ready.

The film is now expected to shoot in the late half of 2008 where hopefully all of the strikes are well behind us.

I'm a huge Tim Burton fan, one of the biggest you are ever likely to meet.

But I'm afraid to say Sweeney Todd looks awful. Only once has a Tim Burton film not worked from the first frame to the last and been so bad that I had to psychically force my eyes to continue watching despite my brain telling me to look away for my own personal well being.

I didn't like his version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and I didn't care for his A Corpse Bride either. But only with Planet of the Apes did Burton really fuck up.

Every new tidbit I see of this film makes me want to see it less and less.

It's dark, but not Burton-dark. It's dull-dark, with awkward signing and faces we've seen in other more interesting roles from Burton...

MORE IMAGES FOUND HERE
I saw the link at Slash Film, who also have a look at a new poster for the movie. More dull imagery...

Another trailer for you guys and it's for Repo! The Genetic Opera, a movie that seems to have been crafted and put together in no time at all.

I hate opera's or musicals. I find the storytelling in them inherently slow and cliche. Ya know, kind of like once you have seen one musical you have seen them all.

Though, I've never seen anything quite like this before. Yes, there's The Rocky Horror Picture Show but this one looks like it is a full on opera. Is their actually any dialogue that is said in a non-signing voice?

Some of the actors in this really look awful and uncomfortable when they sing and I fear that the females they have in this aren't interesting enough (at least from the trailer) for us to care about the film.

The movie isn't out till April, but here's our early look at the trailer...

Darren Lynn Bousman always works one film ahead of us. His latest movie Saw IV opens next week but work is already well under way on his first non-Saw flick, Repo! The Genetic Opera.

The horror opera which looks as wacky as The Rocky Horror Picture Show has a preview reel online and it looks pretty cool. Anthony Stewart Head is clearly having fun in the lead villainous role of the Repo and the I love the blue eyed mask he dons.

There's a frantic energy about this footage which is just sadly missing from Sweeney Todd.

For those who are dying to see something a little different then this could be it. I hate musicals pretty much by default, but this one looks as if it works.

Look for this in April, when Bousman will be similarly well underway on Scanners...

The first Sweeney Todd trailer gathered a rather mixed reaction from the Internet Community, so what of the newly released second trailer which has taken out all of musical aspects and has been revamped with more blood?
From this trailer, the movie looks like a better and more coherent film but there's still three things that are bothering me about Sweeney Todd...

A) The film looks so dark. I mean I like my dark movies but there's a point when the dark, dull and gloomy atmosphere just become depressing and I think Sweeney Todd might have crossed it. I'm really starting to dislike the tone of this film. Batman Returns, Batman, Edward Scissorhands and Sleepy Hollow were all dark but yet existed in Burton's unique world of cinema and therefore had a unique tone. The Burton-esque tone.

I'm not just not seeing this here. They should have gone for the type of comic book and colourful scheme of the Victorian horror picture From Hell and I thought Burton would, rather than playing it more dark and straight.

B) Although obviously we've known for over 12 months now that Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp were leading this thing, when it comes to this trailer ...

Earlier today we announced that you would be able to catch the SWEENEY TODD trailer before screenings of THE HEARTBREAK KID this weekend. While that is still true, why would you waste money on that Ben Stiller tripe when you can watch is for free online?

Yahoo! movies have published the 2 minutes 30 second trailer online for your viewing pleasure, including all the usual HD formats as well as lower quality for you poor folks on dial-up.

Download the HD here.

What do you make of Depp's singing voice? Does this look cool or has Burton's quirkiness just gone a little bit too 'out-there'?

The good news...

The first trailer for the much anticipated Tim Burton movie SWEENEY TODD will play in theatres over the weekend.

The bad news...

It will only be attached to prints of the Ben Stiller comedy THE HEARTBREAK KID.

The good news....

It will most likely be viewable online too!

And the further good news....

Cinema Blend have seen the trailer and say it's great...
Musicals are by definition weird, and Sweeney Todd is weirder than most. And the trailer is good, really good. Or it is until Johnny Depp gets singing. Then it gets even weirder than you’d expect. It’s not that his voice is bad, it’s just that watching Johnny Depp belting out a tune in Tim Burtin’s typically dark, dank, world simply feels incredibly wrong.
Depp's signing has been a worry for many during the discussions we've had over the 12 months since this movie was announced and I will say this....

If CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY showed us anything, it's that there's nothing worse than a mis-firing Johnny Depp.

I love Depp and 99% of his work is absolutely superb... but when he goes wrong, it's painful to watch because he puts himself so out there.

Fingers crossed for SWEENEY TODD. It's a ...

John Carney, writer and director of this film, made it ostensibly to "try and make something that relied less on your conventional 90 page script, something that was a little bit more organic, and something that included a lot of songs." The result is a film that is unique, interesting, and stands out from the recent crop of releases with its innovative approach to storytelling.

Once is set in Dublin and follows the relationship between two individuals, a street performer who lacks the confidence to perform his own songs and a young immigrant struggling to get by in a new place. The bond between them is kindled by their love of music, and this becomes the core of their relationship as it unfolds on screen. The absence of plot-points and dramatic scenarios might sound risky, a portent for a dull and pretentious diatribe on the 'true essence' of human relationships, but actually the complete focus on music as the driving force for the feelings between the two main protaganists made for captivating viewing. By avoiding sensationalism in the production, Carney has achieved a strong sense of continuity, and the story flows through its meagre contents with surprising depth and power.
