I didn't expect this. Every review I've read for Clint Eastwood' Nelson Mandela movie Invictus, barring one, has bored me to the point of nearly throwing in the towel. Well almost, kind of, nearly.

Don't start with the negative responses. Please hold your tongue and don't call me a lame 15 year-old-journalist/blogger or complain about how good this site used to be in the good old days. I'm just saying, the reviews are in and they don't quite live up to the Eastwood/Freeman/Damon/Mandela/December Oscar knockout we were expecting.
Invictus is on limited U.S. release from Dec. 11th, and doesn't play
in the U.K. till Feb. 5th.
It's just from the sounds of things, it's the un-sutble Eastwood again and whose prints are more obvious than they used to be. I didn't hate Gran Torino but I didn't like some aspects of how Eastwood shot it, and of course that awful ending. Flags of Our Fathers or Million Dollar Baby were ok but there was a straight forwardness to his direction, and an unsubtly about them that I couldn't agree with, or digest properly.

The bizarre thing about this whole situation is that the handful of all the reviews posted so far are positive, at ...

Still on the subject of sport movies- what on Earth is Clint Eastwood thinking making The Human Factor? I fully agree that Nelson Mandela’s life warrants at least one big-time film devoted to it, and that Eastwood is probably the man to give it the correct poise and class, but why specifically choose the storyof the attempt to host the rugby world cup in a bid to unite the fractured country? The film-watching community is just primed to receive the account of his early turbulent life, incarceration and subsequent villification on release- having just had the modern precedent set by the Che films. I personally want to see the conflict behind Mandela- the contradictions between the myth of the man and his gritty reality: as truly his personal story is an excellent allegory for the plight of his people.

I wonder whether this decision is in direct response to Spike Lee’s accusations of racism surrounding Flags of Our Fathers? As much as what he said was tosh, and deliberately inflammatory (what more can you expect from Lee?), you cant help but feel that there would have been a certain small percentage of the community who germinated that particular seed of doubt. ...

Touted from day one as possibly the favourite for this year's Best Picture Award at the Academy Awards, Clint Eastwood's next movie is THE HUMAN FACTOR, a biopic of Nelson Mandela starring Morgan Freeman I what I expect to be his career defining role.

The movie has been shooting for a few days now in South Africa and is based on John Carlin's novel Playing the Enemy and will be released in December, just in time for the Oscar season.

Academy favourite Eastwood who surprisingly last year didn't have a movie up for nomination despite releasing both THE CHANGELING and GRAN TORINO, but is riding off his most popular movie of all time as TORINO has grossed $142 million at the domestic box office.

One wonders if WATCHMEN ($72 million) has any chance of the legs to equal that number.

Academy Award winning actor Morgan Freeman is said to be in "good spirits" in a Tennessee Hospital after breaking an arm and elbow in a Mississippi car accident on Sunday night.

Although his condition doesn't seem to be as serious as it was first made out, it has been confirmed that Freeman's car flipped several times - though Freeman never left conscious. Like a character he would play in movies, he was said to be jokey during the Jaws of Life extract to get him out of his crashed vehicle.

A female passenger, Demaris Meyer of Memphis' condition has not yet been made available. It has been confirmed that 71 year old Freeman was driving her car.

"He is having a little bit of surgery this afternoon or tomorrow to help correct the damage," spokeswoman Donna Lee, the veteran actor's sister-in-law, said in a statement. "He says he'll be OK and is looking forward to a full recovery. He and we thank everyone who has sent them for the good wishes and prayers."
The ever active thesp recently starred in one of the biggest movies of all time - The Dark Knight and can next be seen in the thriller The Code alongside Antonio ...

Danny DeVito is to return to the directing chair for the first time in five years when his adaptation of the young adult bestseller The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle begins lensing in September.

DeVito adapted Avi's 1990 book for screen and has convinced Morgan Freeman, Pierce Brosnan and Saorise Ronan to star in the project financed by Handmade Films.

Academy Award nominated Ronan will play the lead role of a daring teen who embarks on the trans-Atlantic crossing from England to America in the 1830's but finds herself the only female on board and caught firmly in between a ruthless but charming captain and a mutinous crew. Brosnan plays the captain and Freeman plays the ship's African cook which is expected to be one of his many "guidance" roles as seen in Wanted and the new Batman series.

The kind of character arc and journey is familaiar to DeVito, who successfully adapted the Roald Dahl novel Matilda into a fun 1996 movie, though it's not expected that DeVito will have an on screen part in this one. The book is said to contain some darker elements but DeVito is mindful of the PG rating...

If we were living in Russia, the upcoming adaptation of Mark Millar's comic book Wanted starring James McAvoy, Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman would be as hotly anticipated by geeks just as much as some of the other big films of the summer.

Sadly we don't and it isn't. We are stuck with some uber lame trailers, whilst all the good stuff from the movie goes into foreign trailers that the MPAA would never pass.

How bad-ass does this movie look from this trailer? Yeah it still feels gimmicky to the 10th degree but it oddly kinda works. Maybe it's because of the dialogue being missing (well not missing but in a different language) and there's no doubt this Timbor Bekmambetov is one hell of a visual genius.

BETTER IN HD
Finally McAvoy feels like he is leading the movie and not just observing it like a sidekick to a poor Angelina Jolie film. Less of the curvy bullets = more enjoyment from me.
I'm oddly finding myself looking forward to the movie now and all it took was a change of trailer.
Wanted opens June 27th worldwide. Still too many nods to The Matrix but let's hope it can stand on it's own.

Has their been actor so over-used, especially vocally in the last fifteen years?

Back in January, veteran Tommy Lee Jones mentioned his intent in wanting to adapt the classic Ernest Hemingway novel Islands in the Stream - a book which has already been turned into a movie in the late 70's by Planet of the Apes director Franklin J. Schaffner which starred George C. Scott.

Well four months on and it looks like Jones has got his studio deal and his first casting looks imminent.

Morgan Freeman and John Goodman are in talks to star - for what would be the first time both have ever worked with Tommy Lee Jones...

The book which was cobbled together from rough but seemingly completed notes found at Hemingway’s house follows a painter through three different stages of his life. His time of tranquility in the Bahamas, his time of cynicism during WW-II when he hears of his son’s death in battle and then a final act which sees him travel out to confront a German boat full of Nazi soldiers.

Tommy Lee Jones will produce and direct the film he co-wrote with Bill Witliff (The Perfect Storm).

FINALLY - a great leading role for Freeman after almost making himself completely invisible as a supporting actor for the last few years. ...

Although I would have highly advised Universal to wait on a sequel to see how well the first movie performs, the word has come today that the haphazard studio have hired Derek Haas and Michael Brandt once again to scribe a follow-up to Wanted, what we presume is now being setup as a franchise.

The big cast adaptation of the Mark Millar graphic novel will open on June 27th worldwide and despite muted anticipation - at best - across the web, Universal can't see it under-performing...
“We’re just finishing up a book adaptation for Universal of the James Siegel novel Deceit. We’ve been hired to write the sequel to Wanted by the same studio,” Derek Haas revealed to Pajiba. “And we’ve got a few more things in the hopper that it’s a little premature to talk about.”
James McAvoy leads (despite Angelina Jolie's bigger presence in the posters) as a guy who finds out his long lost father is an assassin and is soon recruited by his father's organisation to follow in his footsteps.

Morgan Freeman, Common and Terrence Stamp co-star for Russian director Timur Bekmambetov (Night Watch).

The film is reportedly budgeted at $65 million.

I don't think I'm going to like this movie. Reminds me an awful lot of the cartoon action movie that was Shoot Em' Up but with better looking people, and the boring actor that Morgan Freeman has truly turned into.

Feels a decade too late after The Matrix and it might just be one notch above Jumper in the glossy CGI stakes...

Wanted Exclusive Trailer

Add to My Profile | More VideosI don't think McAvoy is right for this material at all and I'm struggling to take him seriously as an action star. Maybe this should have been the action movie that Brad Pitt starred in with Jolie instead of Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

This screams WAIT FOR DVD but for those interested the movie opens on June 27th from acclaimed Russian director Timur Bekmambetov.

Review by Matt Holmes

[rating: 1.5]

Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson. I was sold by the billing.

Two of the biggest actors of their generation, together on screen for the first time. Sadly, this is far from their finest hour and when the movie has such a lacking screenplay and really flimsy direction from vet Rob Reiner who is a pale imitator of his former self these days, the movie can't survive with only half good performances.

The writing just isn't present from first time writer Justin Zackham, whose script was clearly picked up because of the concept rather than the quality of writing. Nicholson and Freeman were cast in the idea that they could cover the cracks and carry this emotional film completely by themselves but without a career performance, it just was never going to happen here. The vets have no chemistry together, Nicholson bringing his usual overacting game and Freeman once again disappearing on screen like he has FAR TO OFTEN over ...
