I went into MILK with the impression I was about to see a film that was a typical Oscar candidate. Packed with acting talent and taking on a worthy topic and an interesting character as its subject, MILK reeked of another Hollywood-does-arthouse affair. When I came out of the cinema, I hadn't let go of that viewpoint. The story was tight, the dialogue flowed comfortably but rarely pushed the boundaries, and all the big names put in strong performances that genuinely brought the characters to life. It was only after a few days that I really appreciated what a well-crafted and complete film this is.

The biography of Harvey Milk, gay rights activist and the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California, is structured through a speech he recorded to be played only in the event of his death by assassination. This structural decision was superb because it instantly makes you conscious of the poignant fragility of the story as it unfolds. Each chapter is digested as a fleeting moment of a life cut short, and this is a dimension that I cannot overemphasize the importance of.

When we meet Harvey for the first time, as an ...

For my money the best movie of the year is also the one that features the best performance I've seen in 2008. Gus Van Sant's extraordinary MILK featuring the amazing Sean Penn...

Easily the best movie of the year. Without any doubt. I believe Mike Edwards is writing a review this week and he is better at this gig than me, so I will let him tell you how great it is.

Fom the movies I've seen this calendar year, this is what I think simply HAS TO BE NOMINATED at this year's Academy Awards (bearing in mind I haven't had access to the majority of films being spoken about for Oscar consideration yet, so by the end FROST/NIXON might be one of the best films of the year but at the point I'm not getting that "jeez, this is incredible" feeling from it that I got from the three I've named, or the likes of NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, MICHAEL CLAYTON, THERE WILL BE BLOOD, ONCE and SWEENEY TODD from last year)...
Best Picture - THE DARK KNIGHT, MILK, WALL*E

Best Direction - Christopher Nolan (THE DARK KNIGHT), Gus Van Sant (MILK)

Best Leading Role (Male) - Sean Penn (MILK... hands down), Ben ...

Audiences were more ready for the Christmas holiday than I expected. The awful looking and loaded with on set problems between it's co-stars Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn, festive rom-com FOUR CHRISTMASES made a massive $31 million over the weekend, that's $46.7 million Wednesday to Sunday for Warner Bros' newly owned New Line Cinema.

For Witherspoon, it's her biggest opening since SWEET HOME ALABAMA in 2002 and the movie propels Vince Vaughn back to normality after the slight mis-fire that was FRED CLAUS.

Though it really needed an opening like this. Vaughn and Witherspoon are two of the highest paid actors in the business, this rom-com was made for a huge $80 million (which can't have gone on the special effects) which no doubt will include nice paychecks for the supporting players Sissy Spacek, Robert Duvall, John Favreau and Jon Voight.

Indie director Seth Gordon (THE KING OF KONG) who makes his debut studio movie here, will hopefully have now made enough money for himself to pursue more challenging work in the future.

Watching this brilliant trailer for Gus Van Sant's biopic of the first openly gay elected man in U.S. political office Harvey Milk and I'm glad it's Van Sant that got the chance to make this movie and not Bryan Singer.

No that I mean to discredit Singer in any way but I can't imagine a movie telling this inspiring tale in a better way than this and Sean Penn really looks to have knocked it out of the park.

The trailer also manages the difficult task of making several conflicts in Milk's life apparent and teasing us as to how they will unfold without giving an awful lot away. This is a must see film...

WATCH IT IN HD HERE

Josh Brolin, Emile Hirsch, Diego Luna and James Franco make up what is a compelling cast, though I will say none of them particularly stood out from the trailer.

The movie will start a slow burning release at the end of November and should gradually go wider as December rolls on.

Hirsch is on the right with the big curly perm, and Penn on the left with the ponytail.

Did people really look like this in the 70's?

Sean Penn has found his new lover. Well on film anyway.

Entertainment Weekly say that Mexican actor Diego Luna will play Jack Lira, a lover (one of many apparently) and one of Harvey Milk's main political supporters in the upcoming biopic of the first openly gay elected official in America, which will shoot this month under the direction of Gus Van Sant.

Jack was said to be an alcoholic and frequently seen in the public eye as being a huge embarrassment figure for Milk which led to events that we wouldn't want to spoil for you here. We try our best to keep from you any details that might spoil your enjoyment of a future film.

Although most of Luna's work has been outside of Hollywood he does have a few American movies to his name with small roles in THE TERMINAL, OPEN RANGE and CRIMINAL. He is probably best known though for playing the lead character in DIRTY DANCING 2: HAVANA NIGHTS.

Josh Brolin and James Franco were added to the project last month and Emile Hirsch sometime before that in what is turning out to be a really well cast group of male actors. EW say we can add Victor Garber (he ...

We will soon be putting together some kind of 'end of year' Obsessed With Film awards and I have a feeling that actor Josh Brolin might be in with a chance of the year's best actor. His performance as the psycho Dr. Block in PLANET TERROR was note perfect, I loved him in a supporting role in AMERICAN GANGSTER and although I haven't seen it yet (I'm desperate to see it before the end of the year) his performance in The Coen's NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN is said to be spectacular.

He's had a great year on film from where I sit.

Variety today have confirmed news we were semi-expecting. Matt Damon has been unable to commit to Gus Van Sant's film on the death of Gay Rights activist Harvey Milk because he is out shooting a new Iraq thriller with Paul Greengrass, so Josh Brolin has stepped into his shoes.

Brolin will play Dan White, the San Francisco county supervisor who killed Milk and Mayor George Moscone in 1978. Also on board are SPIDER-MAN's James Franco (as Milk's lover and campaign manager) and Emile Hirsch as fellow gay rights activist Cleve Jones.

Gus Van Sant has attached Sean Penn and Matt Damon to his long gestured biopic of openly gay 70's politician Harvey Milk who was gunned down by Dan White, a fellow electoral supervisor. This seemingly would now put the director ahead in the race to bring a Milk biopic to the big screen, as Bryan Singer is still shooting his Valkyrie movie and is not at the stage yet where he can make this kind of move on his next project.

If things go as planned, Penn would be the politician Milk and Damon would be the guy who guns him down and it would mark the first time the two acting heavyweights have ever worked together.

A December start date in San Fransisco is tentatively planned with a script from Big Love writer Dustin Lance Black being approved by Groundswell Productions who are financing the flick. The shaky start date which is not set in stone may effect Damon's involvement as he has other irons in the fire with The Fighter and another movie with Paul Greengrass titled Imperial Life in the Emerald City.

So what does Singer do as a counter-move? Does he give up on the script written by his ...

Directors Bryan Singer and Gus Van Sant are about to lock horns to see who is the first man to get a movie biopic about Harvey Milk off the ground.

For those who don't know, Milk was the first openly gay elected official in the U.S. which meant of course that he was assassinated in 1978 along with Mayor George Moscone. His killer Dan White also a supervisor, was only sentenced to seven years in prison which led to many riots and protests.

From Variety...
After 15 years in development, "The Mayor of Castro Street," the movie based on the book by Randy Shilts, is moving toward the starting gate. Warner Independent Prods., which brought in Singer two years ago, is near a deal with Participant Prods. to co-finance and with Chris McQuarrie to write the final draft.
So that would be the Bryan Singer project on Harvey Milk then but of course the interesting thing in all of this, is that Singer already has his WWII epic Valkyrie to begin shooting this summer then of course he will be working on The Man of Steel soon after. Unless Superman is said to be delayed after all.

Speaking as an outsider looking in, if Singer wants to ...
