Since we've already offered a DVD review of The Wrestler (see it here), I'm tasked with providing something different to celebrate the British release.

I am a serious DVD and Blu-Ray collector, devoted to building up as close to an essential tome as possible; combining exclusive special edition releases with those movies that simply have to be owned. Accordingly I am interested in how each DVD I buy fit into the overall collection- what they say about who I am as a collector, and what they contribute to my shelves- and it is within this context that I want to consider The Wrestler.

So, your acquisition of the The Wrestler means...
That You Appreciate A Damn Good Yarn
On paper, this is an unconventional success story to say the least- a Mickey Rourke-headed, painfully tightly budgeted Hollywood smash filmed as a "proactive documentary" about the flamboyant, fluorescent world of professional wrestling. But at the heart of matters is a phenomenal minimalistic script, some wonderfully observed relationships and a central character whose conception is only matched by the beautiful performance that makes this film. The story, enriched by the awe-inspiring performance that Rourke brings to it, is an exceptionally simple look at the dysfunctional relationships that mark the life of a ...

I'm much more familiar with Bob Hoskins' other dark, disturbing and paranoid mid 80's British thriller The Long Good Friday than I am with Mona Lisa, a movie which Variety have announced is to receive an American remake from Handmade Films over two decades since it originally screened.

The movie starred Hoskins, then a fresh faced newcomer on the film scene as a guy who lands a job as a chaffuer for a high class escort, played by Cathy Tyson. At first they hate each other and what they both represent but of course over the duration of the film they begin to form a close bond and fall in love. Hoskins agrees to help Tyson find her friend who still works at the dangerous corner of Soho prostitution.

Neil Jordan made it, a man who went on to make The Crying Game, The End of the Affair and Interview with the Vampire, so I have no doubt it's good and I frikkin love Hoskins in The Long Good Friday (also being remade right now).

The remake which will begin lensing in New York this July has landed the much in demand Mickey Rourke to play the Hoskins part (perfection, he knows cynical world ...

I actually think Sam Raimi is a little further along in pre-production on SPIDER-MAN 4 than he lets on to IGN this weekend and I translate the "earliest stages" comment referring more to finalising the script elements they already have in place rather than just beginning work on writing a new movie.

They have a release date now, May 6th 2011... things are starting to get serious now for Spidey's fourth installment.

Raimi claims he is closing in on villain/villains, one of whom thanks to Nikki Finke we already know was offered to actor Mickey Rourke, who had to turn it down due to his commitment on IRON MAN 2. As we know Raimi has mentioned before he has wanted to include Morbius The Living Vampire in the franchise to add a supernatural element, so it's not too hard of a stretch to think Rourke's was offered that role, as the physical resemblance is strong.

Now it will be interesting to see if it was a case of that's the only actor Raimi wanted for that part and without him they have no character, or whether it will be offered elsewhere.

We should also take into consideration the progression of Dr. Curt Connors as played by ...

UPDATED:

E! Entertainment have confirmed a February 14th scoop that Scarlett Johansson will play Black Widow, the soviet spy who has a good side in IRON MAN 2.

The role firmly sets her up for future movies, including THE AVENGERS in 2012.

Nikki Finke claims Johansson screen-tested for the role at the beginning of the year but lost out to Emily Blunt, but now Blunt is travelling with Jack Black's Gulliver, they went back to her and offered Johansson the part.

Physically she's not right, her acting style only suits love triangle drama's from what I've seen... it's kinda like asking Marilyn Monroe to play TOMB RAIDER.

Blunt was just right for the role... Johansson may be out of her depth here. When an actress like Eliza Dushku lobbied so hard for the role, I think Favreau dropped the ball on this one.

A further update, Variety adds that Rourke will be playing both Whiplash and Crymson Dynamo, some kind of mixing of two villains.

END OF UPDATE...

"A significant" higher offer from Marvel than the $250,000 that was originally put on the table has secured the signature of Mickey Rourke for IRON MAN 2 according to Nikki Finke.

Holding out for a better deal, just as Samuel L. Jackson ...

This seems to be the situation here regarding Mickey Rourke and IRON MAN 2.

Rourke desperately wants to "bring it" to the sequel. He wants to be in the movie, he wants to show the world that he is capable of starring in a huge Summer blockbuster and is a big enough actor to play a villain that can make several hundred million for Marvel.

But Marvel, trying to save a lot of money these days, won't pay him the same salaries as they are giving out to Robert Downey Jr or Gwyneth Paltrow.

They have lowballed him an offer no-one is surprised he turned down.

BUT, offer him the right kind of money and he will do it. It's the same kind of situation as to what he was in with GET CARTER, where the studio wouldn't offer him what he wanted and Sly Stallone, star of the picture, came in and paid the rest of Rourke's salary.

On this project he hasn't got a Stallone. But come Sunday night, he very well may have an Oscar on his hands for THE WRESTLER.

And that will mean gold, REAL GOLD for Rourke. And more gold from Marvel.

Two bits of sad news to broadcast here my fellow geeks.

First up, the lowball $250,000 offer from the recession hit Marvel to Mickey Rourke to play the main villain Crymson Dynamo in IRON MAN 2, proved to be too low for the actor.

He tells New York Magazine...
"Right now, we're not doing Iron Man 2," Rourke told us grimly.
Instead as we heard yesterday, he has now officially signed on to appear in THE EXPENDABLES which will shoot at the same time as Marvel's Tony Stark sequel.

Rourke owes Stallone a lot. If you watched that really inspiring interview last week between Rourke and Charlie Rose you will have heard the story that Stallone paid the majority fee to get Rourke to appear in GET CARTER at the turn of the century when the studio wasn't keen on his casting choice.

His role in GET CARTER was the beginning of Rourke's come back in the industry.

Simply put, Rourke owes Stallone a lot and he has turned down a high profile role as a thank you to Stallone and most likely for the better paycheck.

In other, kind of related news. AICN are now firmly back tracking on the Arnie in THE EXPENDABLES story we ran ...

UPDATED: Latino Review have the scoop that Danny Trejo (ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO, MACHETE) has a role in the movie. For a "home coming of tough guys", how can you go wrong with a guy whose face carries the same hard man world weariness as Charles Bronson?

I have a feeling Sly Stallone got on his knees and begged Arnold Schwarzenegger, his much compared action hero peer of the 80's and 90's, to star in THE EXPENDABLES.

But in the end, he could only get Arnie for one day of shooting. Which is still mega cool.

AICN have heard that Arnie will play Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in the movie, a small cameo that revolves around a confrontation between Stallone's fictional character Barney Ross and Arnie playing himself. Somehow, don't ask me the details, but in this move universe it seems both have a history dating back to when Arnie was shooting CONAN THE BARBARIAN.

It's a meta-film connection I guess, can't wait to see it. And it isn't actually the first time they have appeared together as Arnie recently filmed a small role in the Indian movie INCREDIBLE LOVE which Stallone has a considerable part in. That movie premieres in India in ...

It makes me believe in second chances, in hard work, in life never being too late.

Just as THE WRESTLER did, it made me believe in Mickey Rourke again. It makes me believe that Mickey Rourke's role as Randy "The Ram" Robinson isn't going to be just a one-off, this is an actor who is going to have a long and healthy career for the rest of his days.

It makes me believe his roles in THE EXPENDABLES, in IRON MAN 2 and whatever else future has in store for him will be fine performances. He will never call a performance in again.

BELIEVE IN MICKEY ROURKE AGAIN BY CLICKING HERE!

And I agree with Jeffrey Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere... Fox Searchlight should absolutely make sure this Rose interview gets embed for all the movie websites to promote. Rourke deserves it.

Even if they are only offering him about 10% of what Tom Hanks makes per Dan Brown movie.

But if he does eventually sign on, Rourke may not be the Russian villain Crymson Dynamo according to Robert Downey Jr

The actor hinted to MTV that instead Rourke would be playing "a semblance of both" Dynamo and the villain Whiplash.

You can find more about that Whiplash character HERE.

It's a BLOCKBUSTER deal, no doubt. One that could give wrestling the kind of exposure it hasn't had since The Rock moved to Hollywood nearly a decade ago.

Never one to shy away from a publicity stunt, WWE owner Vince McMahon has made a huge offer to Mickey Rourke to appear at the event on April 5, 2009 and from the sounds of it, he may have given away the plot already for his storyline. In a video interview he calls out wrestler Chris Jericho and confirms he will make an appearance at "the grand daddy of them all"...

Then in a print interview with Access Hollywood he says...

“The boys from the WWE called me and asked me to do it,” Rourke told Access Hollywood. “I said, ‘I want to.’ I’m talking with [WWE legend] Rowdy Roddy Piper about it.”

Stallone, who remember is 62!, will begin shooting his ensemble war picture next month.

Meanwhile Brazilian site Omelete claim claim Brit actor Scot Adkins (he played Agent Kiley in THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM and will play Weapon XI in X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE) has been cast for the role of Paine described earlier as...
the head of General Garza’s security detail. His orders are to take the Expendables out. He eventually snags one of the mercenaries and tries to siphon details out of him.
The site also mention PRISON BREAK actor Robert Knepper for the cast, a name I have not heard previously for the film.

Also it's claimed Mickey Rourke's role has been heavily reduced to coincide with his IRON MAN 2 shooting schedule, where he play one of the main villains, the Russian Crymson Dynamo.

This seems legit, a trade announcement from both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter that Jon Favreau has once again out done himself with his casting for the IRON MAN franchise.

Putting in doubt what AICN call a "premature casting announcement" for Stallone's THE EXPENDABLES, Mickey Rourke is in talks to play a tattooed Russian heavy named Ivan who becomes a man with deadly, technologically enhanced coilsplay. He goes by the name Crimson Dynamo.

The Crimson Dynamo wears an armored battle-suit that serves as an exoskeleton, providing the wearer with superhuman strength and durability. The suit's outer layer was composed of a carborundum matrix alloy, and is equipped with: hand-blasters that can fire high-frequency electrical bolts; small missiles contained in the back shoulder area of the battle-suit; computers and radio transmitter and receiver; boot jets that allow flight. Subsequent versions of the battle-suit have featured upgrades of various kinds, by the Gremlin and other Russian scientists.
Both IRON MAN 2 and THE EXPENDABLES will be shooting at roughly the same time, it's probably going to be one or the other for Rourke. The sensible career choice of course would be to go for IRON MAN, which probably will also have the big money attached ...

Mickey Rourke played a "broken down piece of meat" in THE WRESTLER and proved he was far from expendable in a role he might well win an Academy Award for if sentimentality plays it's part with the voters.

His first cast role since the buzz from THE WRESTLER? Well it's going to be THE EXPENDABLES. Sly Stallone has once again kept to his promise of hiring larger than life personalities for his ensemble war picture and has cast Rourke to play an unscrupulous arms dealer who becomes the go-to guy for a group of mercenaries planning to topple a South American dictator.

Variety claim Rourke is repaying a favour to Stallone for bringing him back from the depths of cinematic obscurity when he cast him for GET CARTER in 2000.

Rourke was one of the names I kept hoping Tarantino would cast in INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, hoping he would resurrect his career, but this way back in the days before KILL BILL. Instead it was Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez who gave him the role of Marv which brought Rourke back in a big way.

Now Stallone isn't reviving his career. He's just simply utilising it.

THE WRESTLER is a movie I've waited a very long time to see. A movie I always knew or rather hoped could be made given the right circumstances and well, just some plain big mighty balls. A movie where the desire to showcase the "fake" sport for how it truly is wins precedent over what might be the most commercially viable aspect of the "cartoon" world of professional wrestling. A movie I would get so ill-tempted about not seeing when the READY TO RUMBLE'S and NACHO LIBRE'S would clog up our cinema screens, playing to the populist and ignorant image of the sport that gives wrestling such a bad name.

I dare say it's also the movie that thousands of wrestlers who have lived this crazy lifestyle over the years have been desperate to see get made. THE WRESTLER is a testament to each and every guy or girl who has stepped into that squared circle, put on those tights and battered up their body, damn nearly killed themselves night after night to put on a show for all together the loyalest and most fickle crowd in entertainment and then get asked why it is they do what they do by ...

Chilean born actor/writer/director Alejandro Jodorowsky hasn't helmed a movie in 18 years and I dare say the core audience of OWF won't really know who he is.

Out of the eight movies he has made, I've only seen one myself. But when AICN this morning posted this Youtube video of Jodorowsky giving us a preview of his metaphysical spaghetti western gangster film KING SHOT, well I got very excited indeed.

The movie is to star Nick Nolte, Asia Argento, Mickey Rourke, Marilyn Manson and Udo Kier. Has that got your attention?

I haven't got a clue what the status of the project is, in fact I no nothing of the film outside of what is shown in that video. I couldn't tell you if he has been filmed already or not. All I know is that the video I've just seen above looks frikkin' awesome.

Darren Aronofsky's critically heralded drama THE WRESTLER feels way smaller than I thought it would but in a way that's a big compliment because with Mickey Rourke's knockout performance, that brilliant piece of music from Bruce Springsteen, Darren Aronofsky storytelling and an authentic realised dedication to getting this sport right, I'm totally hooked for seeing this.

CLICK HERE TO SEE THE TRAILER IN HD

I always knew wrestling was a sport so fascinating that it had at least one good movie about it just begging to be made. Has Aronofsky, a man who similarly I always thought had a good movie in him (I hated THE FOUNTAIN and never really warmed to REQUIEM FOR A DREAM), finally given me what I have wanted to see for years, a straight, good old fashioned narrative movie with no gimmicks.

I can't wait to see this.

THE WRESTLER opens Dec. 17th in the U.S. and on Jan. 16th in the U.K.

We are still yet to see a trailer for Darren Aronofsky's widely acclaimed THE WRESTLER but finally we are getting a look at the beginnings of a poster campaign.

Fox Searchlight had this very modest poster art on display at the AFI Fest which was snapped and posted online by /film.

I presume Fox Searchlight are working hard now on a poster/trailer campaign for the movie's release on January 16th (U.K. and U.S.)

The casting is all but complete for 13, the Hollywood remake of a much liked psychological French noir thriller 13 TZAMETI which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival a few years.

Variety say Ray Liotta, Mickey Rourke, Ray Winstone, Jason Statham, Sam Riley and er, 50 Cent will star.

Riley ("Control") plays the title character, a young man who stumbles into an underground competition where the wealthy gamble on human beings in a Russian Roulette-like competition.

Rourke... will play a convict in a Mexican prison who is sold into the competition. Winstone... will play a competitor who has been sprung from a mental institution to participate; 50 Cent ("Righteous Kill") will play an employee assigned to escort Rourke's character to the bloody game.

Statham... plays a wealthy British man who bets on the competition and has a peculiar interest in one of the competitors. Liotta... will play a cop on the trail of the illegal game.
Seduced by the bigger budget, the bigger resources and no doubt the bigger wage... Gela Babluani, the writer/director of the original is back on board to do the same task. No word if this version will be black and white also.

I had never seen ...

Fox Searchlight have given THE WRESTLER a December 19th U.S. release date just days after picking up the most hotly talked about movie coming out of the Toronto International Film Festival.

Darren Aronofsky's movie starring a "revitalised" Mickey Rourke is expected to start small then grow wider as the weeks go on, giving it every opportunity to be talked about for Academy Award nominations.

Hopefully some trailers, posters and general marketing are only weeks ago because those of us who weren't at the TIFF haven't really seen much from this exciting release.
