George Miller could be ready to go ahead with a reboot of the post-apoclayptic franchise which launced unknown Australian actor Mel Gibson into movie stardom, as The Hurt Locker's Jeremy Renner claims that he he has screentested and met with Miller for a role in Mad Max which he claims is gearing up to film next year.

Renner doesn't reveal what role but he would seem a good fit for this generation's Max. Also we are just presuming here, but I'm guessing this will be a reboot/remake and not a Superman Returns-esque later chapter but again, I'm only guessing.

Would love to know who he is up against for the role... because I would say Renner is a damn fine candidate for this part.

Variety say Mel Gibson will lead The Beaver, a black comedy about a guy who wears a beaver puppet on his arm, which he talks to and treats as a companion. The movie is based on Kyle Kilen’s script which Brendon Connelly at /film claims to be “one of the few very best screenplays” he has “ever read.”

Gibson replaces Jim Carrey who replaced Steve Carrell in the hotly talked about project which unusually found a director last month in actress Jodie Foster. Foster's attachment is no doubt how Gibson landed the part as the duo are good friends, going all the way back to them working together on 1994's Maverick.

Foster has also given herself a part in this, playing Gibson's wife.

Carson Reeves at Script Shadow calls The Beaver...
a thinly veiled (albeit dark) version of "Guy drinks magical potion. Life changes for the better." What separates it from the rest of these types of films is that it's not a comedy. Well, it is, but not really. It's actually a serious look at how depression ruins families and how distraction and denial may work as temporary lifeboats from the disease, but sooner or later, you're going to have to deal with the real issues.
The puppet itself is said ...

He couldn't convince Mel Gibson to return to the character, so Aussie director George Miller will make a fourth MAD MAX movie animated.

3-D Anime to precise, and Miller wants to make sure we get the word "anime" in his interview with MTV...
"The anime is an opportunity for me to shift a little bit about what anime is doing because anime is ripe for an adjustment or sea change. It’s coming in games and I believe it’s the same in anime. There’s going to be a hybrid anime where it shifts more towards Western sensibilities. Kurosawa was able to bridge that gap between the Japanese sensibilities and the West and make those definitive films".
Kurosawa... Miller that is some high standard.

The plan seems to be to make a tie-in video game that will be released at the same time as the anime flick. He is working on that with the game director of GODS OF WAR 2.

Gibson won't be involved in either.

A Japanese MAD MAX... weird.

Although with the movie adaptation being dead in the water for months, this news has been obvious to everyone for such a long time but in any event, today Aussie director George Miller confirmed on the Sydney-based talk show "Sunrise" that he is no longer working on the JUSTICE LEAGUE movie in any capacity at WB.

Miller had been given the task of directing the proposed team-up movie during the late summer of last year but once Christmas time came and it was still stalling, it was obvious that WB were giving up on the project which by then they had spend a good deal of money on with lots of pre-production stages completed and casting places filled.

The negative fan reaction to the whole idea of a JUSTICE LEAGUE film at this stage of the DC Comics on Screen canon played a huge part in it's demise, a lot of it stemming from the casting of young and mostly inexperienced actors in their 20's but Miller believes that wouldn't happen again if the project did ever get revived.
"the studios seem to want bigger stars in their superhero movies now."
Miller also told the station that he hasn't yet given up hope of ...

Richard Donner, director of all four LETHAL WEAPON movies has told L.A. Times that Mel Gibson has passed on the fifth movie which producer Joel Silver has recently put into development at Warner Bros. after being extremely impressed by Shane Black's script.

Donner also believes the project is now dead, because no Gibson means no franchise.

"It's too bad, actually, because Channing Gibson, who wrote the fourth one, and Mike Riva, a designer on three of them, and myself and Derek [Hoffman, an associate at The Donner Company] had an incredibly strong story for the fifth movie. But we weren't given the opportunity and I think maybe I could have convinced Mel to do it. But Warners chose to go with Joel Silver."

"Yes, the project is pretty much dead in the water unless someone had the sense to come to me."
Seems like this was a pack of falling cards for Warner Bros. When they couldn't get Donner involved in some capacity then they probably lost Gibson, their star. No Gibson, means no movie.. with or without Danny Glover.

A real shame if you ask me because I was strangely interested in seeing more adventures of Riggs and Murtaugh, they aren't like some of ...

It's on... Joel Silver is fast tracking LETHAL WEAPON at Warner Bros and has begun talking to potential actors for the first Shane Black scripted movie in the series since the original 1987 Richard Donner directed classic.

STOMP THE YARD lead Columbus Short has told IGN that he has spoken with Silver about the role of Murtaugh's son (Danny Glover's characters son) and mentions both Glover and Mel Gibson in his interview, as if both vets are already on board.

After a good amount of false starts, this new attempt to crack a LETHAL WEAPON return may just be happening and I've been all for it since Shane Black handed in his screenplay, I have complete faith in his ability to write the best possible movie for this franchise.

More so than ROCKY, RAMBO, DIE HARD... I say LETHAL WEAPON has the most chance of working today. It was never about how fit or strong you were, it was about being charismatic and funny, with a smart themed screenplay behind you. Neither Glover, Gibson, Black or hell, even Richard Donner are over the hill, they could all still do this.

Ray Winstone will replace Robert De Niro in The Edge of Darkness according to Variety.

You may recall, De Niro left the film some days into shooting after suffering from "creative differences", which haven't been fully disclosed.

Martin Campbell's movie, based on his own late 80's Brit mini-series marks Mel Gibson's first on screen return in six years as a detective whose daughter is shot dead at his home. Ray Winstone plays the operative who attempts to clean up the mess.

Danny Huston, Shawn Roberts and Boja Novakovic co-star.

Shooting is already well under-way in Massachusetts.

Discuss: Does anyone else feel like Ray Winstone has become the "go to guy" for any kind of adult themed crime/thriller? He has done a terrific job of pushing himself into the top tier of actors chosen for these films.

Creative differences have seen screen legend Robert De Niro leave filming on the Martin Campbell directed thriller The Edge of Darkness after just one week on set, according to Variety.

The movie based on Campbell's own late 80's British t.v. mini-series, is Mel Gibson's first return to acting in six years, playing a homicide detective and father of a murdered young woman. De Niro had been set to play the operative sent to clean up the evidence in the tale involving government conspiracies and corporate cover-up.

Until they can re-cast the second lead role, the movie will awkwardly shoot around any of the scenes involving De Niro. Campbell has the unenvious task of re-casting a Two Time Academy Award Winner and Four Time Runner-Up.

Danny Huston, Shawn Roberts and Bojana Novakovic co-star.

As far as I know, De Niro has only ever walked out on a movie this close to it's production (filming in this case) and that was way back in the mid 70's when he left what would eventually become The Goodbye Girl (Richard Dreyfuss replaced him) so he could star in Taxi Driver.

That proved to be a very good choice but for such a huge actor, he has never troubled anyone ...

Robert De Niro is close to agreeing a deal to star opposite Mel Gibson in The Edge of Darkness, a thriller adaptation of a 1985 Bafta Award winning British t.v. series that was directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale, Mask of Zorro).

Campbell is back to helm this remake, which was adapted by Academy Award Winning scribe William Monahan (The Departed) for GK Films.
Gibson stars as Thomas Craven, a straitlaced homicide detective for the Boston Police Dept. and single father, whose 24-year old daughter is murdered on the steps of his home. The cop assumes he was the target, but his investigation leads in another direction and uncovers his daughter's secret life, a corporate cover-up and government collusion.

De Niro will play an operative sent to clean up the evidence.
Shooting begins later this month in Massachusetts.

The Edge of Darkness marks Gibson's first significant film role since his 2002 turns in Signs and We Were Soldiers. The movie also marks the first ever pairing of De Niro and Gibson.

Nice to have you back Mel. Even though I have been enjoying your directorial exploits over the past couple of years, I always looked forward to the acting side of your career.

Variety say Gibson after turning down a ton of projects in the last five years (including Lethal Weapon 5) has committed to star in Edge of Darkness an adaptation of a six-hour long 1985 BBC mini-series which was directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) - who is also on board for this adaptation.

The script comes from William Monahan (The Departed) and it will be Gibson's first leading role since Signs in 2002 and his first on screen part since The Signing Detective in 03...
Gibson will play a straitlaced police investigator whose activist daughter is killed. He plunges into the case and uncovers systemic corruption that led to his daughter's death.

Gibson had long been a fan of the mini and was receptive when King and Campbell approached him several months ago.
Production will begin in August - and it will be produced by Graham King's GK Films banner (he went after Monahan personally) and by the BBC.
