The exit of Disney chairman Dick Cook two months ago had left McG's ambitious re-telling of the Jules Verne classic tale 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea in dangerous, stormy waters and it's now hit an iceberg, and it's sinking according to Variety.

McG was set to steer the ship in February but Cook, who had previously championed Bill Marsilli's (Deja Vu) origin script based around Nemo constructed his warship, the Nautilus, lost it's trust at Disney once he departed. New chairman Rich Ross didn't like the idea of an McG re-telling and he abandoned ship before it got any further.
McG chased Will Smith to play Nemo at the turn of the year and
when he said no, he turned to The Rock who was likely
to star in the picture when filming was to begin in February.
If Ross is smart, he will know that there's big money to be made in a 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea tentpole someday, if they find the right writer/director partnership. McG was never the right man for this but a Jon Turtletaub, a Gore Verbinski or even a Stephen Sommers comes on board, and you have a ready made tentpole that could easily become a ...

Initially McG spoke about his desire to cast Will Smith as Captain Nemo in his remake of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea at Disney but according to Production Weekly, he has settled for one of the Mouse's most profitable lead actors, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson after Smith presumably turned him down.

Seems like a logical choice in truth, The Rock will be cheaper than Smith, he is a proven bankable star for them with The Game Plan and Race to Witch Mountain and is more likely to star in any potential sequels.

McG hopes to make the movie later this year in Australia, possibly as his next project as he attempts to become the new Brett Ratner after somehow getting his foot into the door of a high profile studio gig. To be fair to McG, I've been nothing but astonished and amazed at how good he has made Terminator Salvation look to date and I'm fairly optimistic he has delivered something awesome.

For 20,000 Leagues, Justin Marks (Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li) has been re-writing Bill Marsilli’s (Deja Vu) original draft which told the origin story of Captain Nemo and his early adventures on his ship the Nautilus.

Love the original Disney's flick from the 50's with James Mason ...

Perfectly fine poster, and one featuring floating heads that doesn't make me want to load the poster into photoshop so I can fix it myself.

I like that Sam Worthington has gotten a big name billing, alongside Bale. This kid is going to be something to watch folks, you don't get cast in Terminator, James Cameron's Avatar and the lead role in Clash of the Titans without having something special in your locker.

Really looking forward to this and when the movie was first announced, and especially when McG came on board. I never thought I would.

Terminator Salvation opens May 21st in the U.S. and June 3rd in the U.K.

Come on guys, Warner Bros. were never going to release a R-Rated movie out of the Terminator franchise, not in 2009. This is the biggest film on their tentpole calendar this year, they want to make sure they can reach out to the highest audience figure possible and Terminator Salvation's mass market appeal will always stop a R-Rating from ever being slapped to this franchise again.

That's whether director McG, star Christian Bale or the hardcore fanboys like it or not. The evidence of the PG-13 rating comes from the fine print at the bottom of a Pizza Hut tie-in promotion...

One of the battles McG was facing was the inclusion of a topless scene involving Moon Bloodgood which now may make it's way on a deleted scene on a director's cut DVD. Or may end up in McG's personal collection, who knows?

AICN reminds us that a PG-13 rating in 2009, is not quite the same as it was five years ago and a movie like The Dark Knight was extremely intense, violent and most certainly not for kids under the age of 13. Maybe they have given the same kind of leeway to Terminator Salvation?

I'm absolutely in love with this trailer, TERMINATOR SALVATION is far exceeding my low expectations and from the looks of things, when all is said and done, it may well be the event movie of the Summer.

Borrowing an awful lot from Zack Snyder's way of cutting trailers (i.e. heavy action, cool camera swipes, slow mo effects and the use of a cool record to set the mood... this time Nine Inch Nails), the trailer is loud, it's in your face and it's way cool.

It also feels a lot like a blending on Michael Bay's TRANSFORMERS and imagery from THE MATRIX and ALIEN in it's band of isolated survivors, the condensed atmosphere, the grey and rag-tag clothing, Sam Worthington's character of Marcus Wright being shown a reality about himself he wasn't previously aware of, just like Neo.

Though there has to be more to this Marcus Wright character right... surely no machine can have that many emotions at the timeline this TERMINATOR movie is set to fit in with Jimmy Cameron's continuity?

It's not quite the movie I dreamed of when I saw the images of the future in the first two TERMINATOR movies but let me just say I'm pleasantly surprised at ...

One word to describe Christian Bale's acting... INTENSE!

Volatile might be another. Some have wondered in the past where do the dark characters he plays end, and where does the man begin? When the actor was jailed last Summer for alledgely attacking his close family members, rumors about his hot headed temper started to fly.

Now it's no longer rumor, we can see hard evidence of this.

Now we wouldn't usually post this kind of gossip thing but man, if I didn't find this completely interesting to understand how hard Bale pushes himself. This is a man under pressure, a man who isn't satisfied unless he goes mentally to the limits and when your that kind of person, well this kind of rants is what can come of you.

TMZ have gotten their hands on some leaked audio from the set of TERMINATOR SALVATION last year when Bale completely lost all control and started to rant at Director of Photography Bruce Hurlbut, after the DP walked in on a scene Bale was acting in to check the lighting.

Bale threatens to kick Hulbert's ass and indeed quit the movie unless Hulbert was fired. He seemingly also takes up the chores of directing as he bosses around ...

Strange that TERMINATOR SALVATION wasn't being promoted during the Superbowl, it is after all alongside WATCHMEN and TRANSFORMERS 2, the biggest commercial release of this Summer.

The one movie that fan anticipation seems to be at it's highest for, especially after that pretty awesome trailer that we saw just before Christmas.

And even stranger when we know that director McG has completed his film and is anxious to show people that it's better than the last entry in this series. From the movies promoted during the half-time, a new trailer for this production would have been nice.

Instead we have to settle for these new production skills of the human resistance members.

First actress Moon Bloodgood (as Blair Williams, a pilot for the Resistance who has been described as “a no-nonsense and battle-hardened member of the resistance” suffering from survivor guilt)...

...and rapper/actor Common (as Barnes, a Resistance soldier and one of John Connor’s closest friends in Terminator Salvation)

The images came from ScreenWeek, which I found at a link via Coming Soon.

McG is a huge fan of Will Smith (who isn't?) and desperately wants to cast him for his newly announced adaptation if the Jules Verne classic, 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, set up at Disney.

The TERMINATOR SALVATION director told Latino Review in person...
"Man I’m trying to get Will Smith to do it, been trying to get a hold of him. I've been wanting to work with him for a long time already. That guy's great”.
Does he want him as Ned Land (played famously by Kirk Douglas) or Captain Nemo (James Mason in the original, though in literature he is of Indian origin).

McG hints that he would want Smith to play the part with the kind of dark edge he had in I AM LEGEND and SEVEN POUNDS...
“The character Nemo in this film is more about obsession, he is obsessed and people tend to forget that when you become so obsessed you end up being the villain.”
Love Will Smith but a Disney vehicle like this one just doesn't seem right for him. A little too much WILD WILD WEST for me.

McG is mulling over several ways to connect his new movie TERMINATOR SALVATION with the previous trilogy. One of the options he has come up with is featuring an opening voice-over from Sarah Connor.

Coming Soon say he is flirting with asking Linda Hamilton to return for said voice-over, which would be her first involvement in the franchise sine TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY. In August, Hamilton suggested she would be interested in a return.

The site has also learnt that McG has spent much time with THE DARK KNIGHT co-writer Jonathan Nolan over the fifth and sixth movie in the series and hinted that "time travel has yet to be explored" in the new series.

The 21st century CV of Danny Elfman, particularly his score for the SPIDER-MAN movies and his recent collaborations with his great friend Tim Burton haven't exactly been up to the glorious standard he set himself in the 80's and 90's, but he's still one of the best in the business and I'm happy to hear he has been hired to compose McG's TERMINATOR SALVATION.

Elfman revealed the news this weekend to MTV, where he answered the question on whether Brad Fiedel's classic score from the original two movies would be incorporated...
“I think if it comes up and it seems appropriate, we will [use it],” Elman said. “And if it doesn’t, we [won't]. I never really know what to expect when I begin other than just kind of get into it and have fun. Especially a movie like “T4” – just have fun. So that’s what I intend to do.”
MTV also tells us to expect a soundtrack contribution from star/rapper Common. In the movie he plays a freedom fighter who battles Skynet alongside John Connors.

Disney have wanted a second role of the dice at Jules Verne's 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA for quite some time now.

Throughout the past five years it's always been something they've been ready to pull the trigger on but kept waiting and holding back as the NATIONAL TREASURE and PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN series kept making money.

Well as both those franchises are currently on sabbatical, Disney think the time is right to go ahead with a new potential tentpole. Variety say they have hired McG (CHARLIE'S ANGLES, TERMINATOR SALVATION) to direct, Sean Bailey (TRON) to produce and Bill Marsilli (DEJA VU) to write a new family adventure based on Verne's classic novel.

In 1954, Disney made one of their best live action movies of the 20th century, a movie that was the second highest grossing of that year and won 3 Oscars. It featured great performances from Kirk Douglas, James Mason, Petter Lorre and Paul Lukas in a classic sci-fi/adventure yarn featuring Captain Nemo and his submarine warship, the Nautilus. It was directed by the late great Richard Fleischer.

Disney hope the remake will go into production sometime this year and is said to be McG's next, even though Warner Bros. are ...

Halycon and Warner Bros. are said to be so pleased with the work McG has done on the upcoming TERMINATOR SALVATION that work has already begun on a fifth movie in the franchise.

McG is currently working very closely with the studio in letting them know the direction he thinks the next movie should take. The plan we heard in 2006 was that TERMINATOR SALVATION would be the first of a trilogy featuring Christian Bale as John Connor.

Victor Kubicek, one half of the Halycon Co. toppers said...

"We feel the time is now to start shaping the next part of this,"
The announcement was made at the Dubai International Film Festival where it was hinted that the Middle East could be used as a shooting location.

TERMINATOR SALVATION opens 22nd May 2009 in the U.S. and June 5th in the U.K.

I am, and forever will be, a shameless fanboy dork when it comes to the first two TERMINATOR movies.

They signify much of what's great about movie-making, representing a confident and dynamic blend of story, character, action, special effects, drama - truly all of the stuff that makes movies so transporting. And it's easy to tolerate T3 with its handful-o-watchable scenes and solid effects, and to try and not get frustrated by its overly jokey tone, frequently silly Schwarzenegger performance, and story revelations that essentially take what's come before and rather distressingly upchuck all over it.

So I haven't been looking forward to TERMINATOR SALVATION under the unassured hand of a third-rate crapteur like McG. The franchise has been slowly whittled away from greatness, first with the departures of James Cameron and Linda Hamilton, and now without the defining Austrian face of Cyberdyne Systems' finest product, so one has to wonder just how true of a TERMINATOR movie we can expect to get.

But now that I've seen the full trailer, I can honestly say I'm excited to find out. It's a great looking clip that makes the movie look pretty terrific and - most importantly - displays little of the stylistic awfulness ...

The much wanted Josh Brolin has told MTV that he did indeed turn down a role in the upcoming Warner Bros. revival of the TERMINATOR franchise because he ultimately felt "it didn't feel right".

McG boastingly told the world earlier in the year that he was going after Brolin who at that point had just come off an incredible 2007 and had just seen himself cast as George W. Bush in Oliver Stone's W. In the end, Brolin turned WB down and Sam Worthington instead took the role of Marcus.

“Yeah. I talked to Christian [Bale] for a couple hours,” Brolin told MTV. “I really liked the script though I hear that’s not what they filmed. The one I read was very interesting and dark. Ultimately though I didn’t think it felt right.”
Securing Brolin would have been a massive coup for McG who already at that point had the massive A-lister of Christian Bale on his side and in great timing is now coming off one of the biggest movies of all time with THE DARK KNIGHT.

Brolin in the coming weeks with have to decide if another Warner Bros. tentpole, that of JONAH HEX, is right for him to do. I speculated ...

Dated Nov. 19th, Total Film have an image gallery from TERMINATOR SALVATION of stills I have yet to see from next May's film.

I'm guessing these have been shown around various film sites over the weekend but I've yet to stumble across them. So apologies if these are old but here ya go anyway...

McG told the mag that star Christian Bale had major doubts when he first mentioned the possibility of offering him the role of John Connor in the new movie...
“I met Christian when he was shooting The Dark Knight. He told me to fuck right off, he didn’t want to do it. He said, 'Write it so that it could be read cold on stage and I’ll think about doing it.'”
Presumably McG succeeded in making the script cold enough for him.

And on the topic of whether Arnie would appear in the movie (remember we have already seen images of him visiting the set during filming)...
“We’re trying to synthesise a human character with a CGI character and that may or may not have something to do with the T800,” McG told us with a smile.

“At the moment it’s not good enough,” he said. “And we’re running out of time.”

Following the release of a slew of highly anticipated, but ultimately lukewarm blockbusters this year (bar THE DARK KNIGHT of course), it's hard not to become skeptical about the prospect of more over-hyped franchise reinventions.

The remarkably unremarkable fourth INDIANA JONES flick, another disappointing HULK installment, the by no means staggering new bond adventure QUANTUM OF SOLACE, along with a suspicious glance at next year's STAR TREK prequel that begs to differ with the artistic choices of helmer J.J Abrams, have all gone their way to unintentionally disillusion the hefty fanbase.

And of course, this on the back of the 'shock horror' news that CHARLIE'S ANGELS' director McG won the directorial duties to revive the five year dormant TERMINATOR franchise.

Thankfully the unfortunately named filmmaker (who openly apologies for his childhood nickname) won over the assembled audience lucky enough to be granted a sneak peek at his 2009 summer blockbuster TERMINATOR SALVATION this week. The raw footage that was aired at the Vue venue in London on Tuesday evening was laudable enough to convince even the most dumbfounded that the director might actually possess the chops to pull this project off.

The tag-line is 'The End Begins' and McG delivers some exhilarating set pieces ...

Thanks to OWF reader MadWelshBoy who sent us this link over the weekend to Beyonce Knowles' "cast me, cast me" plea to Warner Bros. for their WONDER WOMAN movie which is a story that has now hit the rest of the web with several dozen outlets adding their two cents to the mix.

She told the L.A. Times that she isn't just putting her name out for the role on the web, she has actively sought out the part and even met with Warner Bros. executives telling them she is the perfect choice.

“I want to do a superhero movie and what would be better than Wonder Woman? It would be great. And it would be a very bold choice. A black Wonder Woman would be a powerful thing. It’s time for that, right?” said Beyonce. “After doing these roles that were so emotional I was thinking to myself, ‘OK, I need to be a superhero’. Although, when you think about the psychology of the heroes in the films these days, they are still a lot of work, of course, and emotional. But there’s also an action element that I would enjoy.”
Problem with Beyonce is not the colour of her skin ...

Warner Bros, clearly content with McG's work on TERMINATOR SALVATION, have hired the 40 year old helmer to direct DEAD SPY RUNNING, an adaptation of Brit author Jon Stock's upcoming spy novel which would serve to launch the new fictional character of former MI:5 agent Daniel Marchant, who is in the vein of a Jason Bourne or James Bond.

Described as "THE BOURNE IDENTITY meets John Le Carre", this reinvention of the spy genre will be an origin tale and will be published in June 2009 from HarperCollins after a publisher's bidding war. They have high hopes for the novel and WB want their piece of the 007 (Columbia), Bourne (Universal) and Jack Ryan (Paramount) pie.

McG would direct at least one of the films, launching himself firmly in a similar situation as to that he is already in with the TERMINATOR franchise. Seemingly, if he has success with the first, he will be back for more.

As well as being a writer, Stock is the editor of the weekend supplement of The Daily Telegraph and worked for two years as a foreign correspondent for the paper in New Dehli. This travelling culture and the journalistic background of an Ian Fleming... points towards ...

In a new blog entry on the official website for TERMINATOR SALVATION, director McG gives us some updates on next year's film which he says has now finished principal photography and has now entered the lengthy post-production process.

He claims the early cuts he has shown Christian Bale and Sam Worthington have impressed the two actors and they like the direction the movie is headed in, which he claims is a character piece which is complimented by fantastic visual effects.

Some interesting quotes from his entry...
Charlie Gibson is aware of his responsibility as the VFX supervisor and second unit director of this film... there's one sequence in particular where we're trying to achieve something that's never been done before. I don't want to talk about it because we haven't been successful yet...

Most importantly, Christian and Sam bring power to the rolls of John Connor and Marcus Wright. This is a story of two destinies colliding. Connor is part of a resistance comprised of the ethnicities that make up the globe. This film is so much more that just Los Angeles. It reflects the global crisis of man, all of man versus machine.
McG also praises the work of Conrad Buff, the editor from ...

One thing you should never do, is trust a liar.

And when we found it hard enough to trust McG, the director of CHARLIE'S ANGELS with a TERMINATOR IV summer tentpole anyway, to find out he is a bare faced liar is rather disappointing.

Remember back when McG proudly announced he had the blessing of TERMINATOR creator James Cameron for his new movie? Well you don't need to remember, you can see the video evidence HERE. Well he lied, so says Cameron to the National Post...
“It could be a big steaming pile or it could be brilliant. Sam Worthington is in the Avatar and the new Terminator and he likes the script, but I never saw it. There was no blessing involved.”
So, does that mean that Warner Bros. "blessing" for McG to make a R-Rated TERMINATOR IV also bullshit?

I would say so, they ain't no way WB would not make a PG-13 version, even if it's a loose PG-13 like THE DARK KNIGHT was.
