In part reference to the collapse of the Bioshock project, as well as keeping in line with my last list, and in response to a specific request from our very own resident Argentine Ezequiel, this week, direct from my brain I bring you the most memorable examples of Hollywood’s perpetual flirtation with other mediums. Notice I didn’t say the best, or the worst, so don’t go busting my balls just yet…

10. Resident Evil (2002)

Why so memorable? Because the first two at least didn’t suck when they could have been an awful mess of too much CGI and too little character focus especially with Paul W S Anderson in charge of them: the decision to cast Milla Jovovich was inspired. Watching her kick zombie arse in her short red dress, embodying that particular brand of sexy violence that we fanboys ache for you cant help but marvel at the choice.

9. Max Payne (2008)

Why so memorable? This was the precise moment when video game adaptations aspired to aesthetic greatness- admittedly the project was an overall failure thanks to some awful direction and the ill-advised decision to go for style over substance. Had the Bioshock project gone ahead with its improbable budget ...

Inkheart

Yes, so I got the date wrong. Sue me. Still not that good, but ideal Easter Holiday viewing when you cant stop the kids from bouncing on your head. Hurray for contraception.

Max Payne

Sometimes I wonder what it would be like if Donnie Wahlberg was an only child- Max Payne inspired more than one of those lovely departures from reality when I eventually dragged myself round to watching it last week. Okay so maybe that’s a tad harsh, but I am perpetually disappointed by Mark Wahlberg’s fluctuating career: his performance in Max Payne is made more frustrating by the genius of his turns in Boogie Nights and The Departed.

Max Payne is actually a fairly good reflection of Wahlberg’s Hollywood career- flashes of artistry like the impeccable visual style are undone by all too frequent blemishes, which can mostly be pinned upon John Moore’s direction and obvious predilection for hyper-violence. The cumulative effect is of a glossy but ultimately vapid piece of work, which is very unfortunate, considering the potential Rock Star Games favourite anti-hero represented (it’s all a little bit Punisher).

The Red Riding Trilogy

David Peace’s other adaptation will no doubt gather far more attention than this TV-screened ...

Finally, Obsessed With Film is allowed to review a movie that has already been on general release in the U.S. and reviewed in numerous press outlets in this country. You can read about the hilarious "embargo" put on us this week HERE.

Is it because Obsessed With Film is known for it's "say what we like" attitude and our desire to see actual quality cinema when we get invited to see movies for free and don't just geek out because we saved £6 on a cinema ticket?

Here's Joseph's review...

As a cinephile, I am aware of the seasons of the cinema - the biggest and noisiest action movies get released to the eager masses over the hot and tantalizing days of summertime, whilst the pseudo-intellectual Oscar films get released in the chilly, solitary nights of winter.

Trying to throw one last glossy action film my way in the wake of the London Film Festival? If your name isn’t Bond, I’m pretty sure you’ve missed the high-speed boat. But here it is, the MAX PAYNE film based on the video game that nobody has cared about for around five years.

Don’t even get me going on this whole “video game turned film” malarkey that ...

An Obsessed With Film critic saw MAX PAYNE recently at a press screening exclusively for this site but just before the film started he was forced to silence by a non-disclosure agreement.

However his feedback e-mail to me after the screening, I believe, is good to print. He never actually reviews anything about the film, so surely this is fine. If it's not, it will be removed sometime today...
Attached is my review of MAX PAYNE. It's been a while since I last did a review, so apologies for the rust. I'm an American and my head is spinning with election buzz!

I should tell you that at the press screening, they made me sign some paper stating that my review wouldn't be posted until the 10th of November (the release date is the 14th). [EDITED BECAUSE HE MENTIONS WHAT WE THOUGHT OF THE MOVIE], I guess they expected it to get slaughtered by the critics and maybe wanted to blunt it as much as possible. I'm surprised that they even showed this to critics. I was having a chat with one of the PR girls from Fox, and when I asked her if she liked the film, ...

A rarity in Hollywood, a video game adaptation tops the box office charts this weekend. Mark Wahlberg's starring action vehicle MAX PAYNE earned $18 million from it's wide release, which was surprisingly bigger than the much anticipated adaptation of RESIDENT EVIL in 2002 but still only makes it the 9th biggest video game adaptation in history.

Of course to no-one's surprise, the movie killed at the reviews, a 17% Rotten Rating with barely any love for it from the top critics.

W, a movie that I thought would have gotten so much more wide appeal managed just $10.5 million after a strong opening on Friday.

Still, the movie has the strong subject matter to stay around for a while and if it reaches $45 million by it's end run, it will have been a success. Josh Brolin seems a shoe-in for an Oscar nom.

Opening October 17th is Max Payne, the latest attempt to turn a pretty popular video game into a financially successful franchise.

Only Resident Evil has had much success at that task this century.

Mark Wahlberg stars after the worst turn in his career in The Happening plays the titular cop who is haunted by the tragic loss of his family and has little regard for rules as he investigates a series of mysterious murders. The cute Mila Kunis co-stars for 20th Century Fox...

Hack director John Moore (The Omen, Behind Enemy Lines) directed the movie which might as well be called "this year's Hitman".

The trailer for Max Payne is online, the video game adaptation that I have long since documented would probably end up being "the next Hitman" because of it's chosen director John Moore (Behind Enemy Lines, The Omen remake) and one note source material.

Whether it's a good thing or note, that one note trait of the "bullet time" sequence has made itself into the first trailer...

mmm... at times it looks like you could replace Mark Wahlberg with Steven Seagal and it would be going STV.
At other times, it actually looks pretty inventive and some original shots, something that I've never seen in a frame of Moore's previous work.
The movie opens in October. With The Happening and The Omen... the last two movies from both guys respectively, they have a lot of forgiving to do.

Chris O'Donnell, rarely seen on the big screen this century has managed to land himself a role in Max Payne says EW.

The former Dick Grayson was last seen in a notable film role eight years ago in Vertical Limit. Oh, how we haven't missed you Chris...

Max Payne is of course the adaptation of the Rockstar Video Game known by most as that "Matrix bullet time game". You just know they are going to put that in the film don't ya?

Mark Wahlberg stars as the cop who most overcome his grief for his dead family by tracking down the instigator of a new series of murders. Mila Kunis plays a similiarly distraught female sidekick and EW say O'Donnell will play an executive.

Behind Enemy Lines director John Moore is currently out filming in Toronto from a script by newcomer Beau Thorn.

Really weak supporting cast - if I've being blunt.

The very sexy Mila Kunis, who personally I can only remember from leading the insulting straight to video American Psycho II: All American Hero has joined the already cast lead Mark Wahlberg in the movie adaptation of the Rockstar video game Max Payne.

The 25 year old actress will be better known to Family Guy fans as the voice of Meg Griffin, or to viewers of That 70's Show who saw her play Jackie Burhart for nearly 200 episodes.

She also has a role in the upcoming Forgetting Sarah Marshall...

In Max Payne she will play an assassin who teams up with Payne to avenge her sisters death. Payne himself is a cop haunted by the tragic loss of his family and gets tangled into a web of a murderous conspiracy.

John Moore, who may only be two steps down from Brett Ratner in the vacant movie stakes with Behind Enemy Lines and remakes to Flight of the Phoenix and The Omen on his CV, will direct Payne as his next feature.

Don't know about this one guys. I do like Wahlberg and his casting was pretty sweet (if a little predictable) but with boring John Moore helming and the casting of this innocent looking ...

His Oscar nomination for The Departed has sure propelled Mark Wahlberg to the top of the Hollywood ladder. In the last 12 months he has secured himself...

The lead role in a sci-fi movie with M. Night Shyamalan titled The Happening.

He was chosen by Peter Jackson to be the male lead in The Lovely Bones, when Jackson literally had hours to find a replacement for Ryan Gosling.

He was also attached to the boxing biopic The Fighter, though despite his extensive months of training it looks like director Darren Aronofsky has instead decided to make The Wrestler with Nicolas Cage.

He was the first choice to lead G.I. Joe, though as we speculated it doesn't look like he will be in the big summer tentpole for Paramount.

Instead the movie he will be filming early next year will be an adaptation of the Rockstar video game Max Payne, which has quickly been put together over at 20th Century Fox as a pre-strike movie and will be helmed by John Moore, the guy who brought us Behind Enemy Lines and the remakes to Flight of the Phoenix and The Omen.

Hardly a choice that stimulates much confidence.

I quite enjoyed the couple of hours I spent playing ...
