It worked in the late 80's. Ambitious young director Tim Burton rejected studio advice about who he should cast as Bruce Wayne/Batman and went straight for his actor on Beetlejuice, the family friendly comedy actor Michael Keaton, who clearly wasn't 6"2 and hadn't spent his whole adult life training for his body to be in the ultimate physical condition to avenge the death of his parents.

Fanboy outrage ensued, but it would be the intensity of Keaton's performance, the ability to forge out a character and the darkness in Keaton's eyes that made him an inspired choice for the Caped Crusader and many still prefer his screen Batman to any other.

Warner Bros. we almost know for sure have been clamouring for Ryan Gosling and Chris Pine for the lead role of Hal Jordan in Green Lantern, the next roll of the dice from the studio hoping to match Marvel's success with bringing Iron Man to the big screen, in a big way.

But when both men turned down the roles (at least that's what I'm led to believe, the former I'm 100% sure has turned it down at least five times), director Martin Campbell is now hoping they are willing to take the ...

The budget is set according to Warner Bros. They are using $150 million from the fortune they made from The Dark Knight and ploughing that into Green Lantern. The Hollywood Reporter say shooting will begin in the Summer down in Sydney Australia, at Fox Studios.

The reason for the Australia shoot being that the $150 million will a stretch a lot further down under because of the drop of the Australian dollar and a 15% location rebate from the Aussie federal government.

Martin Campbell (Goldeneye, Casino Royale, The Mask of Zorro) directs from t.v. writer Greg Berlanti's script. The movie is currently set to hit theatres in Dec. 17th 2010.

But we still have no Green Lantern... though I don't think you can go wrong looking at the Enterprise for who it may be (Chris Pine or the young Anton Yelchin).

Martin Campbell twice resurrected James Bond from franchise killing movies when he made GOLDENEYE and CASINO ROYALE, both times bringing the exact entertainment audiences wanted out of their 007 at a time when the future of the character was looking very bleak indeed.

If it wasn't for Campbell, maybe we wouldn't have James Bond movies still being made right now.

Now Warner Bros. want him for GREEN LANTERN, replacing Greg Berlanti who was the last director to be attached, though his script he co-wrote with Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green is still expected to be used say Variety.

Campbell whose credits also include the two ZORRO movies and VERTICAL LIMIT, has just completed a remake of his own BBC thriller EDGE OF DARKNESS with Mel Gibson and Ray Winstone.

You can see why he has been chosen. He makes great character pieces (see his last Bond) which are stylish, grounded in reality (which will do what Nolan did for Batman here) and with top notch quality action.

The only thing I would say, is I hope he has a BIGGER VISION for this character, which is something he surely warrants. This is no ordinary superhero character.

The movie is now being fast tracked looking for a release ...

Three news stories have hit the trades today that probably didn't deserve their own post but work quite well bungled together like this.

First up, Jim Caviezel will play a top MI5 operative whose routine investigation of a global corporation leads him to discover an imminent terrorist attack on London from intelligent the dangerous Samuel L. Jackson.

The movie is BLOWN and will be directed by by Martha Fiennes, the sister of Joseph and Ralph. Her husband George Tiffin, the cinematographer from THE SPIRIT will write and handle photography. [The Hollywood Reporter]

CASINO ROYALE director Martin Campbell will helm NAGASAKI DEADLINE, a NATIONAL TREASURE-esque thriller about an emotionally damaged FBI agent who must decipher historic events in a desperate race to avert a terrorist plot.

David and Peter Griffiths (THE HUNTED, COLLATERAL DAMAGE) wrote the original script which is being re-written by William Boyles Jr. (CAST AWAY).

The movie should begin production next year once Campbell is done with EDGE OF DARKNESS, the thriller starring Mel Gibson and Ray Winstone. [Variety]

Ray Winstone will replace Robert De Niro in The Edge of Darkness according to Variety.

You may recall, De Niro left the film some days into shooting after suffering from "creative differences", which haven't been fully disclosed.

Martin Campbell's movie, based on his own late 80's Brit mini-series marks Mel Gibson's first on screen return in six years as a detective whose daughter is shot dead at his home. Ray Winstone plays the operative who attempts to clean up the mess.

Danny Huston, Shawn Roberts and Boja Novakovic co-star.

Shooting is already well under-way in Massachusetts.

Discuss: Does anyone else feel like Ray Winstone has become the "go to guy" for any kind of adult themed crime/thriller? He has done a terrific job of pushing himself into the top tier of actors chosen for these films.

Creative differences have seen screen legend Robert De Niro leave filming on the Martin Campbell directed thriller The Edge of Darkness after just one week on set, according to Variety.

The movie based on Campbell's own late 80's British t.v. mini-series, is Mel Gibson's first return to acting in six years, playing a homicide detective and father of a murdered young woman. De Niro had been set to play the operative sent to clean up the evidence in the tale involving government conspiracies and corporate cover-up.

Until they can re-cast the second lead role, the movie will awkwardly shoot around any of the scenes involving De Niro. Campbell has the unenvious task of re-casting a Two Time Academy Award Winner and Four Time Runner-Up.

Danny Huston, Shawn Roberts and Bojana Novakovic co-star.

As far as I know, De Niro has only ever walked out on a movie this close to it's production (filming in this case) and that was way back in the mid 70's when he left what would eventually become The Goodbye Girl (Richard Dreyfuss replaced him) so he could star in Taxi Driver.

That proved to be a very good choice but for such a huge actor, he has never troubled anyone ...

Robert De Niro is close to agreeing a deal to star opposite Mel Gibson in The Edge of Darkness, a thriller adaptation of a 1985 Bafta Award winning British t.v. series that was directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale, Mask of Zorro).

Campbell is back to helm this remake, which was adapted by Academy Award Winning scribe William Monahan (The Departed) for GK Films.
Gibson stars as Thomas Craven, a straitlaced homicide detective for the Boston Police Dept. and single father, whose 24-year old daughter is murdered on the steps of his home. The cop assumes he was the target, but his investigation leads in another direction and uncovers his daughter's secret life, a corporate cover-up and government collusion.

De Niro will play an operative sent to clean up the evidence.
Shooting begins later this month in Massachusetts.

The Edge of Darkness marks Gibson's first significant film role since his 2002 turns in Signs and We Were Soldiers. The movie also marks the first ever pairing of De Niro and Gibson.

Martin Campbell has his second new project in consecutive days, this time one setup at U.A and Lakeshore Entertainment according to Variety.

Joel Surnow and Michael Loceff - two writers and producers on 24 have been plucked by Tom Cruise to come up with a contemporary spy thriller which very much mirrors what the actor did with J.J. Abrams and his feature directorial debut, Mission Impossible III.

There's no word yet on the title but it's said that the concept is original and it should have an impact creatively and commercially.

Again it's another nail in the coffin of The Birds remake - at least for Campbell's involvement anyway. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind Campbell as a director, his movies have never particularly insulted me and I have found them entertaining but they are often kinda one-note and flat. He's not a hack but he's very much a safe guarded director who does his job perfectly fine.

But his remake of The Birds I could imagine being horrible.

Nice to have you back Mel. Even though I have been enjoying your directorial exploits over the past couple of years, I always looked forward to the acting side of your career.

Variety say Gibson after turning down a ton of projects in the last five years (including Lethal Weapon 5) has committed to star in Edge of Darkness an adaptation of a six-hour long 1985 BBC mini-series which was directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) - who is also on board for this adaptation.

The script comes from William Monahan (The Departed) and it will be Gibson's first leading role since Signs in 2002 and his first on screen part since The Signing Detective in 03...
Gibson will play a straitlaced police investigator whose activist daughter is killed. He plunges into the case and uncovers systemic corruption that led to his daughter's death.

Gibson had long been a fan of the mini and was receptive when King and Campbell approached him several months ago.
Production will begin in August - and it will be produced by Graham King's GK Films banner (he went after Monahan personally) and by the BBC.

The original show was a bit before my time. Research tells me it starred Bob ...

The more Platinum Dunes' remake to Alfred Hitchcock's crowd pleasing masterpiece The Birds is put off, the more unlikely it will ever happen.

Which is good news because absolutely none of Hitchcock's works post Shadow of a Doubt should even be thought of as a remake. Each one of them is such a personal directorial vision and so masterfully crafted that you really are playing with fire when you attempt to remake one of them. Just ask Gus Van Sant, he will tell you all about it.

Speaking to Shock Till You Drop whilst promoting her new movie Funny Games (also a remake, and so soon after King Kong... that will give a girl a reputation) actress Naomi Watts who will star in the role made famous by Tippi Hedren in the original gave us the good news...
"It's a work-in-progress at this point," she says. "I think it's a wonderful film. There are great things in it that interest me. The script isn't completely there yet, it probably won't happen until next year."
"Work-in-progress" is a term I most definitely wanna hear every time this remake is mentioned. It basically translates as "It's not good enough to film".

All is not lost with the remake of THE WOLF MAN if The Hollywood Reporter are to be believed.

The trade say that not only Brett Ratner has met with Universal over the revival of the classic 50's monster, but a whole host of other experienced directors have either held talks, or will hold talks over the next few days in regards to the movie which has now been officially pushed back to a March start date.

A decision is expected to be announced early next week. Brett Ratner is still said to be favourite because of his track record of coming on board projects late and delivering a financially successful movie, and for the simple fact of how fast and problem free he can work. As a studio you can see their point but for the sake of the film's quality, please choose from the guys below (or my picks David Cronenberg and John Landis).

Those names are:

Frank Darabont (THE MIST, THE GREEN MILE, THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION)
