I find it odd that the biggest buzzed' blockbuster movie since Star Trek, has received such an average, so-so, stuck in 3rd gear, kind of trailer. It's pedestrian. It's middle of the road. It's macaroni and cheese. It's Joseph Fiennes (adequate, but always leaving you wanting more).
Will the real Kick-Ass please stand-up?
Lionsgate have mashed together most of the clips that delighted the comic-con crowd back in July into a teaser trailer for Matt Vaughn and Mark Millar's Kick-Ass (16.04.10), accompanied by odd grunge music, daytime cartoon title cards and some very odd character introduction shots of the supporting players. And bizarrely for the money men... no mention of any of the actors that are in this (Nicolas Cage for one, you would think brings assess to seats).

But most of all, it's misleading. The trailer suggests a light-hearted, family friendly picture. A Spider-Man that you can take six year olds too. Which by all accounts is completely the opposite of what will be served to us in April, as Kick-Ass is bloody, violent, unforgiving and brutal.

A couple of my peers are apologizing for it claiming it's because the heavy stuff has been kept under lock and key ...

Wanna know why the Superman reboot talk has been so quiet lately? Well it would seem Warner Bros. are now balking at the idea, at least for the time being. They don't want to rush into it and make another mistake, which this time would seriously put Superman on life support, possibly for decades.

Last year, WB were inviting pictures from anyone with a good idea and according to comic book writer Mark Millar (who was the most vocal about his intentions in wanting to make an 8 hour picture retelling of Supes whole life), the studio did indeed meet with several writers and directors, but thought better to put the development on the back burner at this time.

Green Lantern, The Flash, Wonder Woman and future Batman movies might be their priority right now. Anyway here's Millar talking about the situation as found by /film...
“Warner’s talked to us and a few other writer/ director teams, but things seem to be in stasis right now. As far as I understand, nothing is happening with Superman at the moment and so the director and I are just working on another project. If it happens, great. If it doesn’t, no biggie. Kick-Ass taught me ...

UPDATED: /film have confirmed from various that this story is false.

But rest assured guys, Superman is reforming. His re-birth is coming, just need to sweat it out a little longer and hope Warner Bros. are smart in who they entrust with this project.
Could it be?

Warner Bros. decided late last year that a reboot of the Superman franchise was the only way to go after Bryan Singer butchered the character and left him with nowhere to go after SUPERMAN RETURNS.

A movie so bad, it created the monster that is Obsessed With Film. But let's not go into that again!

Since July, Warner Bros. have been inviting pitches from anyone with a good idea as they try and make a franchise that can match up to their work on the Batman series which is making them more money than they know what to do with right now.

Scottish born Mark Millar, the comic book writer on KICK-ASS and WANTED is one such scribe who has already spoken with Warner Bros. over his trilogy of Kal-El which would basically start at his birth and end with his death over the course of three movies.

He told Empire in October...

Scottish comic book writer Mark Millar, who all summer has been telling the world he has an epic idea for a new SUPERMAN film trilogy which I'm pretty certain already has Warner Bros interested (as they announced they were willing to listen to new pitches are proclaiming they want to reboot) has been spilling the beans over his intentions for his and the character's magnum opus.

Speaking to Empire Magazine, Millar tells us the epic would basically tell the whole saga of Superman's life in 8 hours, spanning three movies that would be shot at the same time and released a year apart, ala LORD OF THE RINGS.

"I want to start on Krypton, a thousand years ago, and end with Superman alone on Planet Earth, the last being left on the planet, as the yellow sun turns red and starts to supernova, and he loses his powers."
Wow. Would Warner Bros. really be willing to risk the profit money from THE DARK KNIGHT in order to make this extremely expensive and huge risk-taking project?

And even if they would, is it really the right way to go...can you tell the entire story of Superman in 8 hours?

Millar continues...
“It’s gonna be like Michael Corleone ...

For all the many, many problems I had with SUPERMAN RETURNS, barely any of them involved Brandon Routh or his performance as the last son of Krypton.

I thought he was damn solid, in fact quite brilliant as Clark Kent, if a little too washed out to be Superman. I would give his Clark Kent a solid A but his Superman just a B... though I would love to see the young actor have another crack at it.

Even though Warner Bros. are in the reboot mode for one of their most famous characters, the studio might yet hang their hopes on Routh one more time. Speaking to Latino Review, DC head chief Paul Levitz revealed Routh has held talks with them over their new direction...
“Last week Brandon Routh has come around the offices in New York and Los Angeles as of late to talk about Superman and what we want to do”
That new reboot was announced a few weeks ago, with WB actively encouraging writers to pitch their ideas for a new direction, the most vocal being Mark Millar... the comic book writer who wrote the comics WANTED and next year's KICK-ASS are based on.

It would certainly be easier for Warner ...

It wouldn’t be far from the truth to call fan-favourite comics writer Mark Millar’s latest miniseries KICK-ASS a phenomenon. From store shelves to movie production in the time it takes most people to earn a week’s holiday, Millar’s story of a young super-hero fan imitating art is well on its way to cult status. Oh, and it’s ultra-violent, foul-mouthed and brimming with character.

So if you wanna know about the source material of one of next year's most anticipated Summer movies, read away..
The Story So Far…

Millar’s story is about Dave Liezewski, a young, un-hip and un-cool riff on the angst-ridden teen made popular by a certain web-slinging Stan Lee creation. The difference here is Millar’s angsty teen occupies a world with entirely different rules to that of the Daily Bugle. Millar’s world is one without super-powers and one where a fight, even a quick skirmish on a sidewalk, can lead to hospitalisation.

KICK-ASS' first three issues are a master-class in simple, effective, high-concept story-telling. You’ll kick your own ass for not having come up with the idea first – unless you did, in which case Ouch! Whilst there’s nothing particularly synapse firing about Millar’s prose, he does manage to gleam some sense ...

Matt here,… extremely excited to report that the new Matthew Vaughn picture has begun filming!

I hope that he knocks one so far out of the ballpark, so far out of this God damned Universe with Kick-Ass, that it shows Marvel what a big mistake they made by not financing his vision for Thor. What a big, big mistake that could be once Marvel hires a director who hasn't got a clue what the word epic means.

Sure Vaughn didn't get the luck with the box office returns of Stardust but that was more down to the crappy way it was marketed by Paramount.

So filming has begun on Kick-Ass and today brings us our first look at Nicolas Cage as "Big Daddy" from the film described as "about comic book guys, made by comic book guys"...

Mark Millar, the Scottish born comic book writer who wrote Wanted and the comic book upon this movie was based, blogged about the first two days of filming on his own personal site...
This is the one. I hereby declare Kick-Ass as the greatest movie of 2009.

And if you think that I WOULD so that as co-creator and a producer on the movie you're absolutely, one hundred percent ...

Mark Millar (Scottish comic book writer whose Wanted was turned into a summer blockbuster) is being really smart, continually and openly talking about his Superman pitch and in the process getting the dejected fans interested again in their hero after the debacle that was Superman Returns just two summer's ago.

We heard recently that Warner Bros. had come to the decision to scrap the current franchise which they originally attempted to carry on with Bryan Singer in 2006, similar to what Marvel have done this summer with varying degree's of success with The Incredible Hulk and what their company did with Batman Begins.

Therefore this will be Superman Begins, if you will. Back to the early days once again, when Pa and Ma Kent found the baby orphan who had fallen from the sky...

So that's one barrier down... Warner Bros. want to restart Supes.

The second barrier is finding a writing/directing team to carry the project for WB, and a team that is as exciting as the partnership David Goyer and Christopher Nolan brought to Batman Begins.

Now if you cast your mind back a few months, Mark Millar came out of nowhere to tell us that he had been approached by a very ...

Comic book writer Mark Millar continues to be the best source of information regarding film adaptations of his own graphic novels, he is never shy in letting out details we weren't previously and often what we shouldn't be aware of.

Millar has told the guys at BreaktheFourthWall that director Matthew Vaughn (Stardust, Layer Cake) has cast "an unknown actor in America" as his good guy lead for Kick-Ass and that shooting will begin in London in three weeks time. Production will then move to Canada (which is doubling as New York) before finishing back up in London.

Does that mean Vaughn has chosen a fellow Brit, someone that we would know over here but Americans might not?

Last week Superbad star Christopher Mintz-Plasse was cast as the film's villain "Red Mist" and young Chloe Moretz was signed up as a 13 year old ninja sword wielding avenger!

Kick-Ass is Marvel's 21st century answer to Spider-Man with a much more grounded in reality tale of a youngster who becomes a costumed superhero and it's known for it's graphic violence and controversial themes. Vaughn directs this movie as his next picture after struggling to convince Marvel that a big budget Thor movie could make a return.

First Mark Millar, and now Louis Letterier?

Both guys have mentioned Superman reboots, it looks like something is really going down over at Warner Bros. and it doesn't involve Bryan Singer who has probably been dumped on his ass after the less than impressive Superman Returns.

Speaking to a French media outlet, The Incredible Hulk director claims he has heard whispers that WB are considering rebooting the Superman franchise, or as he puts it "reinventing it".

No shit, they should have done that LAST time!

Confusion began earlier in the day when a couple of bloggers read the translation of his interview wrong, and claimed he said that he had held talks with Warner Bros. over directing the new movie himself. Thankfully that turned out to be mis-communication.

A couple of weeks back we heard Mark Millar mention that WB a "well known American action director" had called him up to team together and pitch a new project involving Supes to Warners. Letterier is only semi-known but he is most certainly an action director after cooking up The Transporter series and the recent Hulk movie. And of course he ain't American.

Inspired by what Marvel did with The Incredible Hulk and completely turned off by what Bryan Singer and his writing team did with Superman Returns... comic book writer Mark Millar (Wanted) is aiming to retcon the red, white and blue character giving him a refreshing restart if Warner Bros. agree to his planned pitch.

He also mentions that the superhero property which he is planning his big presentation to the studio, now has a director attached which he will reveal closer to Christmas time.

“Since I was a kid I’ve always wanted to reinvent Superman for the 21st century,” said Millar. “I’ve been planning this my entire life. I’ve got my director and producer set up, and it’ll be 2011. This is how far ahead you have to think. The Superman brand is toxic after that last movie lost [a good chunk of change], but in 2011 we’re hoping to restart it. Sadly I can’t say who the director is, but we may make it official by Christmas.”
I don't think it's the worst idea at all. Let's forget Superman Returns ever happened ala Ang Lee's Hulk.

Wanted looks to me like a movie full of special effects gimmicks that won't carry or do justice to the heart and sole of Mark Millar's story.

And don't get me wrong for one second, I love some of the things that are going on in the movie's many trailers so far but remember, not every film is as cleverly made as the first Matrix movie and can sustain new cinematic devices and some superb storytelling for the whole running time of a feature.

Today, Empire are running an exclusvie behind-the-scenes featurette which is mostly the comic book creator Mark Millar gushing over his first piece of work adapted for film.

YOU CAN FIND THAT HERE.

The film opens worldwide at the end of next month starring James McAvoy, Angelina Jolie, Morgan Freeman, Terrence Stamp, Thomas Kretschmann and Common for Russian director Timbur Bekmambetov (Night Watch)

The time is rapidly approaching when you have to decide whether you are wanting to see the movie or not. At the moment, I'm 30/70 in favour of NOT seeing it with only strong word of mouth possibly being it's saviour.

How about you?
