Tonight, I've convinced a few Twilight fanatics I know to come with me and see Let the Right One In at my local theatre. It wasn't particularly hard, they had a vague interest in seeing it in the first place thanks to the universal praise (and rightfully so) the movie has recieved in the U.K. press this month, but also because that Twilight series has brought back a fascination with vampires.

A fascination that for people like me, who was around for the first episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, who saw Near Dark on VHS at an all too early age, who spent many nights wondering about the pscyhology of Lestat the Vampire after Tom Cruise's amazing performance in Interview with the Vampire.

Man... for a dude who saw The Lost Boys about five times during one horror filled twelve month video binge year in 1997. And that's not to mention Dracula, I Am Legend, Stephen King's novels etc, etc. This is nothing new, the vampire genre has taken up just as many horrors of my reading and viewing life as comic book and superhero's have.

But even with that, even with the countless number of vampire re-tellings I had seen, Let the ...

Man, I'm so glad I held off buying the Blu-Ray transfer for Let the Right One In, the movie that was fifth on my best of 2008 list and one which I think will only get better the more times I see it. The only reason I hadn't is because it is being released on a limited U.K. run in a few weeks and I'm desperate to see it play on the big screen.

But for those of you who are seeing the movie for the first time on home video, I must direct you to this horrifying news. A subtitles scandal has plagued the home video release, something that any fan of Miyazaki's anime or Asian movies in general have much complained about over the years.

Rob G. at Icons of Fright say the sub standard subtitles translation on his DVD/Blu-Ray transfer "have ruined the film" for him and he is advising people not to buy the Magnoila Home Entertainment issued DVD and Blu-Ray.

"Sure, the basic gist of what the characters were saying was kind of there, but missing completely was the darkhumor, subtleties and character nuances which made the movie so powerful...just about the intent of every single line of dialogue was completely off and ruined the movie".
He exhaustively ...

Since the invention of film, there have been movies about vampires. Few movies, however, have ever gotten their story right.

Vampires, even in traditional literature, are creatures of feral power and insatiable hunger; they are more like mosquito's in human form than artistocratic gentlemen. Hence their appeal to audiences: they are "other", possessors of a power and freedom that we humans lack. Unfortunately, most film adaptations of the vampire myth tend to either romanticize or modernize their plight, effectively eliminating the fear of their true nature at the very heart of the story. In my mind, the 1922 German silent horror NOSFERATU comes closest to presenting a vampire as a powerful, malignant creature who has an unstoppable will to survive.

That is, until now. LET THE RIGHT ONE IN is one of the greatest vampire films of all time.

This brilliant film from Sweden tells the story of Oskar, a lonely twelve year old boy tormented by bullies in school. One night in the courtyard of his apartment complex, he meets his new neighbor Eli, a mysterious dark haired girl. Despite the snow and frigid air, Eli walks around without shoes and seems strangely unfazed by the cold. Their nightly meetings in the ...

Matt Reeves, the childhood friend of J.J. Abrams who directed the monster hit CLOVERFIELD, has been hired by Overture and HAMMER HORROR films to direct a remake of the Swedish vampire flick LET THE RIGHT ONE IN according to Variety.

You may remember that's the movie the Internet film community have been going crazy over in the last few weeks, labelling the film one of the truly best of the year. OWF reader aphexbr loved it...
I saw this at Frightfest in London last month, and most people agreed it was one of the movies of the festival. It’s slow, lyrical and very touching with only a glimpse of gore, focusing mainly on the relationship between the leads. Highly recommended for those without a need for fast action or a fear of subtitles.
Tomas Alfredson's original film based on a novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist centers on a boy who befriends a female neighbour who moves to town but things may not quite be what they seem. It's not expected that the movie will get much of a theatrical release, if any, but is expected to hit Region 1 DVD in March

The remake is expected to be released next year and will quickly ...

A universal strangehold grasped movie websites towards the end of last week and truly didn't let go. It was the Sweedish Vampire flick LET THE RIGHT ONE IN which has their all exasperated. Every critic it seems has spurted out "BEST FILM OF 2008" during their review, geniunely exicted to have stumbled across a really great film.

On Thursday, Quint at AICN called it "a damn near perfect film" after it screened at Fantastic Fest. Peter Sciretta of /Film called it a "must see". After a brief google search, it seems Cinematical were hailing the film as "the sickest and sweetest horror movie in a decade" as early as April this year.

All you need to know (apparently the movie works best when you know very little about it) is that it's a vampire flick which has some romance and shares similar themes with TWILIGHT. That's it, that's all you need.

So, when can we see it, you ask?

It would appear Magnet Releasing are set to release the film on DVD on March 10th 2009 but before that it will get a limited theatre run from October 24th in New York and L.A. before expanding somewhat afterwards. As the movie is a Magnet ...
