A study in Forbes makes a great case for one-note, high salary comedy actor Will Ferrell being Hollywood's most overpaid thesp after two years of underperforming hits and flops.

Their study suggests "for every dollar Ferrell was paid, his films earned an average $3.29" which compares to Shia LaBeouf's "$160 return per dollar"... though on that scale the study is slightly flawed as no-one saw Indy IV and Transformers 2 because LaBeouf was in it.
Land of the Lost is a movie that is at least
$35 million in the red for Universal.

This summer's Land of the Lost was one of those epic Hollywood disasters that...ended up costing an estimated $100 million and earned only $65 million at the worldwide box office.

Universal studio heads Marc Shmuger and David Linde were subsequently fired.

Land of the Lost's dismal box office helped land star Will Ferrell at the top of our annual list of Hollywood's Most Overpaid Stars. Ferrell is no longer the sure bet he seemed after hits like Elf ($220 million worldwide box office) and Talladega Nights ($162 million box office). Ferrell's 2008 film Semi-Pro earned only $43 million. Step Brothers did better with $128 million, but it wasn't enough to help Ferrell--mainly because ...

There's talk of a Third Man remake. It's an ugly story that rears it's head every now and again.

CHUD say that genuine real life friends Tobey Maguire (as the cleaner than a whistle, kinder dumb but morally righteous, hack writer Holly Martins) and Leonardo DiCaprio (as the sadistic, charming and utterly insane Harry Lime) are to front-line a remake of the 1949 Carol Reed directed film noir classic from a script not yet written by Eastern Promises scribe Steven Knight.

They expect a trade announcement in the next two weeks. Hmmm, I have my doubts.
Harry Lime (Welles) reveals his sadistic scheme
to a shocked long time friend Holly Martins
(Cotton), in the most famous scene of The Third Man (1949).

I have doubts because of the talent involved. DiCaprio has always been a smart guy who has hunted down smart projects. He has never looked to go down the remake wagon and although he's not afraid to adapt big properties at his own studio (The Twilight Zone comes to mind), he's also someone who respects film history. He wouldn't remake North by Northwest but he would star in movie that pays homage to it with Catch Me If You Can.

Maguire is too much of ...

Only Christopher Nolan could keep the plot for a $180-200 million Warner Bros. summer blockbuster a secret but he has done an admirable job so far and even though I'm desperate to know what "the architecture of the mind" is all about, the truth is the less I know come next July, the better the experience for me.

Of course when a picture cost as much as to make as this one has, simply putting up the tag "from the director of The Dark Knight" and slapping Leonardo DiCaprio's picture on the poster isn't going to be enough, so Warners will no doubt make sure every man, woman and child is bombarded with knowing just exactly what the movie is about when 2010 rolls around.

Here's The Matrix esque, really dark and threatening trailer (loved the shot he has re-tooled from The Dark Knight, a shaky cam shot whilst a guy is being dragged away) which is such a tease. I think it's scored to a remix of the Joker theme...

The 100% complete, first post-Academy Award winning Martin Scorsese movie - the psychological mind-fuck insane asylum, potentially mainstream/oscar worthy Leonardo DiCaprio and his famous friends thriller - has been delayed by six months.

The long projected Oct. 2nd 2009 opening, now becomes Feb 19th 2010. The movie severely cuts down the Oscar chances of a film that really did seem like it could be a serious contender for several categories, despite it's attractiveness to the average movie-goer, it's lack of a deep resonant theme and it's sole goal to entertain whilst creeping you the hell out.

Apparently the move has nothing to do with the quality of the picture according to Nikki Finke, as the film has scored very high at test screenings, the trailer has kicked up a storm online, the movie has genuine heat and interest (two people from my walk of life who wouldn't read my site or one of my peers if I paid them have told me several times the movie looks immense) and well when does Scorsese ever let you down?

The delay is all about the money. Finke's Paramount source says...
I hear that Paramount told the filmmakers it doesn't have the financing in 2009 to spend the $50M to ...

This Japanese poster for Martin Scorsese's October released Shutter Island is something not of this time. Nothing about it screams a 2009 release. I think it's fantastic.

If it wasn't for the fact that cinematographer Robert Richardson, whose incredibly lush work on Inglourious Basterds and the ambitious shots (particularly that one over a cliff) from the AMAZING trailer for this picture had worked his magic on this film too, I maybe would have been disappointed at this point that Scorsese hadn't shot it in black and white.

Creepy and cool poster, and once again proves that movie marketing always seem to look better in Japanese. Even The Ugly Truth seems more interesting.

Of course Shutter Island wouldn't make a dime if that was the one-sheet in our theatres because truly, it's a dud for profits. Star power is so much more important in this country, which is why Leonardo DiCaprio's head takes over most of ours...

Scorsese's got a new picture out in October. Are you excited?

A boat load of set photo's have been released this week for Christopher Nolan's highly secretive Inception but nothing that really indicates much. Paris looks like Paris. DiCaprio just looks like DiCaprio. Ellen Page still looks impossibly young.

DiCaprio is making out with a chick I don't recognise. DiCaprio kind of oddly looks like a good looking Christopher Nolan, same hair/clothes style/posture. I now know thanks to a calling sheet that DiCaprio's character appears to be named COBB - which is also the name of the character in Nolan's first movie Following. Interesting.

None of this really gives me a clue as to what the movie is about. And the more I read about it, the more confused I get. A spy for AICN sent in a vague description of what we can expect to see from the teaser trailer for next July's picture which is set to be shown from tomorrow with some prints of Inglourious Basterds.
This was a very short teaser. It started with Christopher Nolan's name, then a flash of a spinning top, then "The Director of The Dark Knight", then a bird's eye view of a city. Then cut to Leonardo in a vehicle, looking on in horror, ...

Ridley Scott has mentioned Aldous Huxley's highly regarded dystopian novel Brave New World many, many times in interviews during the past year - we actually picked up a story about it ourselves 13 months ago, and now finally an official deal has been put in place to bring this significant science fiction novel to the big screen.

Risky Business Blog say Universal have setup an adaptation of the novel with Ridley Scott and Leonardo DiCaprio producing, both with an eye on directing and starring respectively.

Apocalypto writer Farhad Safinia has been hired to adapt. Depending on how quickly he can translate the novel (and it's a complex book, so it might take a while), potentially it could be the next movie for DiCaprio and Scott. Both have made lots of deals for future films (Scott's working on Robin Hood, DiCaprio on Chris Nolan's Inception currently) but neither have made a firm deal for anything next - so it could be this.

For Scott, who it's believed started becoming obsessed with the novel not long after he turned the equally mind-bending Phillip K. Dick novel Blade Runner into a sci-fi classic in 1982, you have to think he will do everything in his power to ...

It's a shame there is no desire from television networks to greenlight anthology formatted thirty minute shows anymore. Maybe it's the post-Lost and 24 era where everything has to be bigger and more intense and where stories are played out in such long assed fashion, you really have to dedicate a good portion of your life just to keep up but never really feel like you get to the end of things.

That's maybe why I cherish my dvd sets of Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone, in my opinion the best non connected narrative t.v. program ever made. Where each tale was told in one episode, each one you couldn't predict what genre/what theme/what characters or what journey you would take. But you did know it would all wrap up in one episode, and that would be it. Done.

Variety have a quick update on the second attempt to make a big screen movie out of Serling's name, a film that was announced just a few days short of a year ago with Leonardo DiCaprio on board to produce. It seems they've had a change around of writer with scribe Joel Anderson leaving the project he had been working on for six months, with The Astronaut's ...

Farnborough Airport last Friday...

University College London last week. Oliver's Arrow, appears to be the fake title of the movie...
The film crew for "Oliver's Arrow" today invaded UCL's Wilkins building to film some scenes in various locations within the Main Library. Michael Caine, Leonardo di Caprio and Ellen Page were on location filming scenes in what had been dressed up (with fake signage) to be the "Bibliotheque" of the "Ecole de Architecture" in France.

They continue...
From what we're been able to hear so far, there was a scene being shot in the Flaxman Gallery (a section of the Main Library on campus) with Leonardo DiCaprio's character being introduced to a graduate student named Ariadne (possibly Ellen Page) by Michael Caine's character. Apparently, DiCaprio's character had a job offer for her. We've also heard that some other scenes were being shot in a lecture theater, a reading room, and some other locations inside the Main Library.
The $150-$200 million project, based on Chris Nolan's original concept and script is still being kept firmly under-wraps.

My time on the internet has been so small lately that it's taken me the best part of a week to talk about the trailer for Shutter Island, the knock your balls off creepy B-movie esque trailer for Martin Scoresese's latest movie with Leonardo DiCaprio, which looks absurdly brilliant. I can't tell you how much I'm loving this feeling that is coming back to directors right now, the bug that caught Sam Raimi recently with his nostalgic and over the top fun Drag Me To Hell has hit Scorsese big time.

This looks to be his most "out there" movie since Cape Fear.

And Robert Richardson, a name most people won't know but whose cinematography you will have appreciated in Kill Bill, Casino and Scorsese's own The Aviator and Bringing Out the Dead... looks to be on another level right here. How gorgeous does this movie look?

Like De Niro in years past, when DiCaprio teams up with Marty he is like a different actor and he looks great here. My favourite line of the trailer is when he is on the ship out there, doing the "for the criminally insane" line, which reminds me so much of what Peter Jackson did with ...

Warner Bros. are in talks with 2008 Oscar winner Marion Cotillard, 2008 Oscar nominee Ellen Page and the Scarecrow himself Cillian Murphy to star in Chris Nolan's science fiction film Inception says today's Hollywood Reporter.

The film which Nolan wrote as his first original solo written script will begin production in the summer with Leonardo DiCaprio in the starring role. The movie has the release date July 16th, 2010 already attached.

Nolan, who always likes to tease, has yet to release anything more than this as a plot...
"contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind".
BUT, we do have some character details at last.

DiCaprio will play a CEO-type executive, Cotillard is his wife. Page is a young college grad and sidekick to DiCaprio.

They also reveal that James Franco was ready to sign onto the project but had to drop out when a schedule was picking up for his stoner comedy adventure film Your Highness with David Gordon Green. Presumably he was up for the role that Cillian Murphy eventually nabbed.

Nolan has a great eye for casting, everything from the major roles all the way down to the small supporting players. Cotillard in a year's time should be a household name when ...

Leonardo DiCaprio chooses his projects very carefully.

Watching an interview on Charlie Rose for REVOLUTIONARY ROAD, he genuinely mentioned he didn't know where the next few years were going to take him, as he is only on the lookout for films that will challenge him and they aren't easy to find.

But he's hit the jackpot today. Variety say Christopher Nolan, one of the top five in the business today has hired him to lead INCEPTION, the sci-fi summer epic that he wrote and will direct as his next movie at Warner Bros.

The movie is aiming for a release next summer and all we know is that it's "a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind".

DiCaprio is at the top of his game right now. If it wasn't for the fact it was a particularly strong year for leading male performances, he would have been right up their with a shout at Best Actor for his performance in REVOLUTIONARY ROAD.

Love the idea of him doing sci-fi. Love the idea of him working with Nolan!

Wonder what this movie is about?

The Hollywood Reporter say John Orloff (A MIGHTY HEART) has been hired by Warner Bros. to re-write the Ian Fleming biopic that was set up at the studio back in May for Leonardo DiCaprio.

The movie we are told will be "very different from the Bond films" and the previous draft from first time writer Damien Stevenson began in 1952 as Fleming was about to marry his wife. Fleming's wedding present to her was a copy of his first novel CASINO ROYALE which introduced the world to James Bond and made Fleming a household name.

Flashbacks then took us to Fleming's years as a Reuters journalist in Moscow, his years in the MI:6 as a spy and then his later life as a playboy.

It is of course the same kind of period and "larger than life" character that DiCaprio played so well in Steven Spielberg's CATCH ME IF YOU CAN.

We were told in May that DiCaprio was aiming to hire a writer who could mould the script he likes, into something that he would want to star in. It took him a while but he now has his writer and the movie is back underway once again.

New Regency have bought the rights to Josh Bazell's novel BEAT THE REAPER, hoping to attract Leonardo DiCaprio to commit to the lead role according to Variety.

The revenge thriller novel shares similarites with A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE...
The protagonist in the novel penned by Josh Bazell is a Manhattan emergency room doctor, whose life becomes complicated when a mobster recognizes the doc from his former life as a hitman who went into the witness protection program.
The novel has one of those great personal stories in that author Bazell was working as a medical intern working night shifts as several publishers waged a seven-figure war over the rights of his first novel.

DiCaprio has just finished filming his role in Scorsese's SHUTTER ISLAND and is weighing up the options on what his next feature could be.

Announced on my birthday this year was a TWILIGHT ZONE movie, which as I'm a huge fan of the original Rod Serling classics, got me rather worried as even Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante, George Miller and John Landis couldn't make a really good movie out of the concept in the early 80's.

But, there is glimmer hope with a talent like Leonardo DiCaprio spearheading the project for Warner Bros.

Back in July, the idea was to put it out to writers to pitch ideas for “Twilight Zone-esque” themed scripts which could then be adapted from any of the show’s over 100 hundred episode storylines or more loosely in the same vein as the general atmosphere of the show.

Fast foward to today where Bloody Disgusting today report that Joel Anderson, writer/director of the 2008 horror flick LAKE MUNGO (no, I don't know it either) has entered final talks to scribe the screenplay, so presumably his pitch was the best of the lot.

According to the site, LAKE MUNGO was shot in a documentary style and revolved around a teenager whose apparent death sets off a series of paranormal events. It was a very low budget Indie film and Paramount Vantage have already picked up ...

Eclectic master of cinema Ridley Scott returns to the genre of war films, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe leading the latest crop of megastars to be deployed in the Middle East.

Unlike Scott's last foray into the US military with BLACK HAWK DOWN, his newest effort BODY OF LIES abandons the focus on the glory of the individual in the act of war and goes wholeheartedly with the 'how fucked up is this?' interpretation of the present conflict. Leonardo DiCaprio's secret agent is promoted following a dangerous mission that saw him lose a trusted colleague but gain a whole bunch of useful data relating to a major terrorist network. He is subsequently relocated to Jordan where he becomes embroiled in a dangerous mission, an alliance with the head of the Jordanian secret police, a standard love affair, and a whole bunch of lies and withheld truths that have him questioning who is really in control.

I'm generally of the opinion that films about the present conflict are self-aggrandising at best and at worst irresponsible. They are either blatant propaganda films (LIONS FOR LAMBS), mundane announcements of personal political views (IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH, STOP LOSS) or action films using ...

Even though SPEED RACER was something of a critical and financial disaster for Warner Bros, the studio are still keen on Japanese anime as a resource for their big budget, live action tentpoles.

Variety say WB under the guidance of Leonardo DiCaprio (as producer) have bought the rights to the NINJA SCROLL series, which revolved around a ninja for hire who is forced to fight an old enemy who will stop at nothing to overthrow the government.

WATCHMEN writer Alex Tse will adapt.

The series began as an animated 1993 film which is said to be one of the best of that decade. It was also conterversially cut in the U.K. because of excessive images of weaponary and one rape scene. A series then followed in 2003 which ran for 13 episodes.

The project will have nothing to do with Joel Silver's NINJA ASSASSIN at WB from James McTeigue (V FOR VENDETTA) and The Wachowski's... once rumored but later denied, that it itself was a remake of this property.

I don't think it's a stretch to say that we all kinda saw this one coming. Though I haven't seen Ridley Scott's latest movie BODY OF LIES yet, I will say that either him, the marketing at Warner Bros. or maybe both have produced one confusing and boring as hell looking thriller.

I wouldn't have paid my hard earned money to see it. They never really sold a movie to me, just flashy cuts, weird dialogue and images.

At this weekend's U.S. box office, BODY OF LIES took a miserable $12.9 million, well short of it's $70 million project budget which it won't make back now. It's another in a long line of failing movies dealing with Middle-East terror and continues the up and down reception Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott team-ups are getting in this post-GLADIATOR world.

Not winning against a talking dog movie in it's second week and a quick low-grade remake of a Spanish horror film, shows something went severely wrong somewhere.

REVOLUTIONARY ROAD is kind of Sam Mendes' own prequel to AMERICAN BEAUTY. Imagine if Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet were Annette Benning and Kevin Spacey but in the early days of their moving into to the suburbs, settling down in a giant house. This is where the bickering begins.

They have "The American Dream" but they just don't like it. They didn't expect it to be like this. Just this one is set in the 50's.

The movie of course will sell on the basis it has the two co-stars whose love story ten years ago made for the biggest movie of all time. I'm not particularly sold on their chemistry here and the trailer feels a little awkward but the themes and the source material (Richard Yates' superb novel) are enough to get me into the theatre.

The trailer premiered on Entertainment Tonight, sorry for the crappy version but it's the best we have right now...

The movie which also co-stars a third TITANIC alumni in Kathy Bates... opens December 26th in the U.S. and January 30th in the U.K.
