says Sony producer Todd Black to the New York Post, sending fanboys into a bit of a guessing game frenzy over who the villain could be for the next Spider-Man movie.

His comment is vague but I guess it rules out a few Spidey villains (or does it, I can't think of any that couldn't exist in New York?). I'm putting my money on The Lizard, I think it's about time we saw how Dr. Curt Connors transforms to his darker side, though I guess his story isn't all that different to Doc. Ock's in truth and we have been there before with Spider-Man 2. And is Dylan Baker a big enough name for Sony to give him the ball?

Seeing The Lizard crawl the sewers of New York works for me though, a completely animalistic villain who should have absolutely no sympathy when he's the monster. With every scene he should move further away from the warmth and humanity he showed as his human self.

Release Date: 16th March 2009

Available from Amazon priced at £9.98

Now is the time of yet another British comedians’ invasion on Hollywood- Steve Coogan’s still there somewhere, Sacha Baron Cohen looks set to cement his position with BRUNO, Ricky Gervais has so far hinted at some good potential, and even Russell Brand seems set for a career of some sort. So it is little surprise that Simon Pegg is defying those critics who see his collaborations with Edgar Wright (and thus by inference Nick Frost) as the be all and end all of his Hollywood career. Even I admit that RUN FATBOY RUN was some way wide of the mark, but one sick swallow does not a shitty Spring make. I for one wait with baited breath for the arrival of first STAR TREK and then PAUL, before Pegg eventually returns to the Pegg/Frost/Wright triptych to complete the Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy.

With the significant televisual comedy chops of Pegg (SPACED) and Robert Weide (CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM) combining you might be forgiven for expecting something more self-consciously cult seeking than HOW TO LOSE FRIENDS... And yet, despite obvious indie affiliations- the casting of Pegg and the wonderful Jeff Bridges chief among ...

New writers being hired for big budget movies in Hollywood are nothing new, in fact it's the expected working practice. It's actually a rarity that a screenplay gets crafted by one single writer all the way through it's production, especially in regards to comic book movies.

Which is why you shouldn't panic to hear that SPIDER-MAN 4 has got a new writer to replace James Vanderbilt (ZODIAC). Only after the fourth or fifth new writer (i.e. HANCOCK) has jumped on board, should we then start to panic...

The Hollywood Reporter say Pulitzer winning Playwright (for his 2007 play Rabbit Hole) David Lindsay-Abaire is now in charge of writing duties. He is known for his character driven plays and characters living on the outskirts of society (perfect!) and has credit on the animated movie ROBOTS and the upcoming INKHEART.

The hiring mirrors the kind of writer they used earlier in the series when dramatic screenwriter Alvin Sargent and Pulitzer prize winning author Michael Chabon wrote SPIDEY 2 and churned out the best film of the series.

The trades once again say Sam Raimi, Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst will all return.

Out promoting her new movie HOW TO LOSE FRIENDS AND ALIENATE PEOPLE, actress Kirsten Dunst has revealed to MTV that she's "in" for Sony's SPIDER-MAN 4, reprising her role of Mary Jane Watson.

But she then follows up with “I’m not saying anything, I know there’s rumors…”, which cryptically either means she has signed on for the new film but quickly realised that she can't say anything or she wants to be in the new movie and is using the press to get her name out there.

Back in 2004, if Dunst wasn't contracted to a SPIDER-MAN 3, she might have turned down the opportunity to return. I think she believed she was beginning to start a career away from the character of Mary Jane after major leading roles in ELIZABETHTOWN and MARIE ANTONITTE but when both movies flopped, she has since found those kind of parts hard to come by.

Four years later, with little leading roles on the horizon, I don't think she can afford NOT to put her name in the ring for the fourth movie.

Currently, only Sam Raimi & Tobey Maguire are on board for a fourth movie (which may be shot back to back with SPIDEY 5) from ...

Nikki Finke at her Deadline Hollywood Daily blog claims that Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi have both signed on to return for another Spider-Man movie, despite claims that both were ready to quit the successful and profitable franchise.

She also claims that previous reports of Spider-Man 4 and 5 being shot back-to-back are absolutely correct.

Kirsten Dunst has yet to agree on a return, though Finke believes the Mary Jane Watson character won't be re-cast if she declines the offer. Presumably the storyline involving Gwen Stacy will be progressed in the two movies, with or without Mary Jane.

Earlier this year, Zodiac scribe James Vanderbilt handed in the script for Spider-Man 4 which Finke believes will begin production next fall for a May 2011 release.

She also hints that Dr. Curt Connors will transform into The Lizard and will be the main villain of the next film, something that I think everyone agrees is the logical choice for the next film.

I want to look forward to this one, I really do. I don't want to see a bad Simon Pegg comedy, it's not fun to see funny people in unfunny movies.

It's like when Matthew Perry from Friends did a string of comedies at the turn of the century, never quite living up to his potential with material that was beneath him.

The folks behind his new comedy How To Lose Friends & Alienate People have sent over the new U.S. one-sheet for the upcoming movie whose imagery I can't quite understand. Are they trying to convey over the message that Pegg is an idiot and buffoon who does stupid things whilst spilling drink over hot actress Megan Fox with Kirsten Dunst looking over his shoulder at the mess?

And is "the most hilarious comedy of the year" not the most bland tagline you have ever heard in your life?
The previously released posters for the film are just as lame...

The movie opens October 3rd 2008 in the U.K. and U.S. from Curb Your Enthusiasim director Robert B. Weide and based on the memoirs of Brit journalist Toby Young.

MGM have posted the official trailer for Teresa: The Making of a Saint online, a piece of viral marketing from the upcoming comedy How to Lose Friends and Alienate People which stars Megan Fox as Sophie Maes, a hopeless and dumb film star who is clearly given roles only because of the way she looks.

She is basically playing a parody of herself. This trailer then is for a movie that Maes is apparently due to star in...

BETTER QUALITY HERE
Well the fake trailer was funnier than the actual real trailer for the upcoming Simon Pegg/Kirsten Dunst comedy that was released last month. I'm not kidding, I think I would rather watch this!
I'm hoping the real movie is good, the last thing I wanna see after Run, Fatboy, Run is another disappointing Simon Pegg comedy when it opens in the first week of October.

British comedy actor Simon Pegg worried me last year with his first major starring role outside of his Edgar Wright/Nick Frost team with Run, Fatboy, Run - a movie so incredibly unfunny and stupid that it was 2 hours of pain watching Pegg take the material seriously.

For actors like Pegg, much like Ricky Gervais - it takes a special kind of role and clever writing material to really use them at their best because they are comedians first and not actors. I find it pretty interesting that both men are playing similar roles in American produced movies at around the same time and they both fall down to the same problem.

With straight characters... Pegg and Gervais are not the leading man, or shouldn't be.

Here's the trailer for Pegg's second attempt at this, How to Lose Friends and Alienate People which similarly to Run, Fatboy, Run descends into a kind of gag so over-used, so wretchedly banal and so bottom of the barrel, it's impossible to not cringe. It's the spit the food on the lady gag!

If this news is true, then we can expect some big movement on the Spider-Man franchise at the end of 2008/beginning of 2009.

Laura Zisken, the producer of the Spidey movies at Columbia/Sony has told theatre owners in California and Nevada that a fourth movie in the series is hoped to be released in May 2011.

She also confirms that James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) has yet to turn his script in, the part of the proccess that will be vital in keeping both director Sam Raimi and stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. If the script is below par or is disagerable with them, then that's it for those three... they no longer have any committments with the franchise.

The Spider-Man series has made over $2.5 billion worldwide and is the most success modern day cinematic franchise. With or without those trio, Spider-Man will be continuing for a very long time indeed. It is the new James Bond franchise of films.

If I were the head of Columbia/Sony/Marvel, then I would make damn sure that Spider-Man 4 and 5 were shot back to back as rumored and that whatever it takes, Tobey Maguire is convinced to return because there's two summer tentpoles still to be squeezed out of him before he passes that point of no return to play the young Peter Parker.

After that, do what you want. Re-cast - move on, whatever.

But for now let's have an epic Spidey two-arc movie which sends off Maguire and director Sam Raimi the right way because Spider-Man 3 certainly wasn't it.

HOWEVER, I'm all for back-up plans. And the word from Latino Review (who are 8 out of 10 times SPOT ON with their scoops) is that two actors are being considered to replace Maguire should he not wish to return. And after all it doesn't take a genius to realise that the Spider-Man films will go on and on and on just like the Bond series with new actors replacing old ones, as long as they keep making money.

First up is Patrick Fugit. You may remember him as the young guy who lead Almost Famous - and since then he's been little seen ...

Spider-Man 3 wasn't so far terrible that the series involving our web slinging superhero is not unsalvagable just yet and if today's news scoop from Cinematical is anything to go by then it's early signs that Sony/Columbia have learnt from their mistakes.

After over-indulging at least two or maybe three films worth of story and plot in the last Spidey flick, the new series screenwriter James Vanderbilit (Zodiac, Basic) has wisely last week turned in a two film storyline arc to the studio for Spider-Man 4 which can be shot back to back with Spider-Man 5. It's a move that has no doubt delighted Sony and Columbia because of course it means one extra movie and twice the cash for the small work of shooting back to back.

And when Spider-Man 3 made $890 million worldwide - you are talking about a move which will eventually see you earn nearly another $1 billion.

There's of course another big factor which is beneficial by this move. Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst aren't getting any younger, Peter Parker is not quite like Bruce Wayne... there's only so long that Maguire can go around convincing us he's still a young man. Shooting these films back to ...
