Using his hard-earned comic credentials to direct a passion project, Judd Apatow's third written and directed effort Funny People, starring his old best friend and roommate Adam Sandler, is in many respects, exactly the story his filmography demanded from him at this point in time. It's a grown up effort. The third entry in a trilogy of "man-childs" movies after The 40 Year Old Virgin (first time having sex), Knocked Up (pregnancy) and now the life cycle is complete with a look into one's mortality, and a reflection of your journey up too that point and what you do if you had a section chance at life.

Hold on, is that a comedy I've just described. Well yes, Funny People is funny... at times. But dramatic too, even more so than the previous two in his canon.

It's also overtly too long, its running time would rival Magnolia - without the depth of content. Indeed some scenes go nowhere in particular, only present because Apatow’s love for his precious material is so apparent. However, it does not mean the audience will be so enamoured. The use of cameo appearances all feels rather needless (with the exception of Andy Dick, who comes out with the ...

This Monday after many e-mails and negotiating, I managed to convince Universal to allow OWF access to a filmed interview slot with some of the cast and crew for Funny People (hopefully Adam Sandler and Judd Apatow - depending on how it works out) in London, along with an early screening and press conference attendance for the opening next week in the U.K. comedy ... but sadly I've hit a snagg.

The four permanent and trust worthy contributors that write for me from the capital are all busy with other work on Monday. Major headache!

This situation hasn't really happened before for an event like this which is so useful to the site, I would hate to miss this opportunity. I'm really a bit lost on what to do. I've put a few advertising job notices on various sites around the interwebs but with Monday less than a full day away now, it's unlikely something is going to come from it.

I would love to handle it myself but I got stuff for 500 Days of Summer planned to do on Monday, plus a trip down to London just a day before I'm off to Edinburgh to see the new Ricky Gervais "Science" ...

I'm not going to deal with my feelings on Adam Sandler's spotty movie career, since I just did that in this article for The Rec Show. If you'd like, you can check out my thoughts there.

I can respect comedies that tackle larger and deeper issues. A film like Tootsie dealt with complicated gender roles and adult romantic situations. Mr. Mom, although a pure comedy, had serious emotional character development. In these films and others, the comedy is always tinged - but not overwhelmed - by the drama.

This has been one of my major running complaints with the work of Judd Apatow. Although he has crafted some of the most memorable comedic moments of the last decade in films like The 40 Year Old Virgin and Superbad, his films also tend to run too long. He also tends to generously ladle on the pathos and emotion, which I find dilutes the comedy too much.

It's even worse in Funny People, Apatow's newest dramedy. This time, Apatow reworks a tired movie-of-the-week plot into an aimless vehicle for today's brightest comedians.

Adam Sandler plays George Simmons, a veteran stand-up comedian with an impressive array of movie hits to his name. When Simmons, discovers that he has a terminal ...

Judd Apatow; you are the master of making me laugh uncontrollably and at the same time really feel that big sting, that big lump at the back of my throat.

And it really looks like FUNNY PEOPLE could be your best yet. There's a depth to it that far outreaches THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN and KNOCKED UP, both of which had lots more on their minds than the usual rom-com.

Universal have released a very long trailer for the film that stars Adam Sandler as a comedian who finds out he is dying and becomes close to the young comedian he has recently taken under his wing (Seth Rogen).

The usual Apatow cast supports, with an Aussie accented Eric Bana joining in this time.

Apatow really seems to have notched up the Hollywood sheen of the movie. Looks damn beautiful. It really works and you know how I know it works?

Because I'm excited for it and it stars Adam Sandler. So there ya go!

Thanks once again to First Showing for the heads-up and the awesome trailer link!

Will I be this teary eyed come July 31st, still unsure as to whether I am laughing or crying?

I’ve given STEP BROTHERS a lot of chances to impress me, having been majorly underwhelmed by the first two viewings- and you know what? It’s just about alright- not spectacular in any way, nor utterly shite, it sort of coasts along threatening to be delightfully funny, without hitting the heights of ANCHORMAN.

But maybe it isn’t fair to continuously hold everything Ferrell does up against his career-defining work on ANCHORMAN- STEP BROTHERS is a film in its own right, and as such demands its own critical evaluation. Even I admit the innumerate mentions of it not being as good as ANCHORMAN are getting tedious; the rose-tinted love of that film has already lead to one mis-guided sequel cobbled together from unused and unworthy sequences from the Editor's floor, so that love cant be all good.

In short, in case you’re new to the film- two middle aged men with severe maturity issues are thrust together when their parents marry each other; carnage ensues etc. Obviously there is the inevitable and sickening moment of personal realisation towards the end- overcoming obstacles and adversity and the like, all wrapped in a nice little moral fibre. But in a pleasant departure from the norm, STEP ...

Judd Apatow favourite Bill Hader (he often plays the supporting goofball) has co-wrote a horror movie with Saturday Night Live writer Simon Rich which is set out to do what Wes Craven did with SCREAM, and to a further extent what recent horror's THE STRANGERS, VACANCY and FUNNY GAMES have done.

What happens when the horror happens to you, when the serial killer tracks you down?

Hader told CHUD...
'I don't know if it's even going to get made,' Hader told me. 'Judd met with us and said "I want to do a horror movie with you. I want to see you in a slasher movie."'

'It's partially Straw Dogs meets Halloween meets Home Alone meets Monster Squad.'

'It is definitely about guys nowadays, that idea that you watch fucked up shit on TV, how violence in our culture - this sounds really hoity toity - you watch fucked up reality shows, I love true crime shows. The idea of that thing coming to your house, and what do you do? I would shit my pants. That's basically what the movie is about. What if that guy decided to come to your house?
I saw the trailer for VALKYRIE this week on the big screen for the first time and I have to say, it just heightens my previous fears that Tom Cruise is so not right for this World War II picture. He is bringing his intense acting gig, which of course we expect from him and he's perfected it down the years but in this environment it makes him look camp and ridiculous.

Maybe it's that damn eye patch, the stiffness of his line delivery, the decision not to use an accent or the uniform. I don't know what it is but none of Cruise works in this film.

He brings far too much attention to himself. It's a Tom Cruise vehicle, that shouldn't be a Tom Cruise vehicle. He is the odd American coming to a fully packed dinner of established and distinguished Brits but the sad thing is, he is suppose to be the German. It's an awful casting and career choice quite frankly and that's coming from a huge Cruise fan.

I think we have become more sophisticated with our World War II pictures in this decade to allow Hollywood to get away with productions like this. We want to see ...

A much slimmer Seth Rogen, losing the weight fast for his role as the action/hero THE GREEN HORNET, features in the poster for the third directed movie from Judd Apatow (THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN, KNOCKED UP), the semi-autobiographical FUNNY PEOPLE.

The Universal Pictures comedy/drama which is only a few weeks into filming finds Adam Sandler as a seasoned stand-up comedian who is diagnosed as being terminally ill. His desire to form a true friendship, see's him take a very green performer (Rogen) under his wing.

It promises to be sweet, sad, uplifting and funny with a true moral message. Just like every Apatow film then!

Co-starring are the usual Apatow crew, his real life wife Leslie Mann and Jonah Hill, along with two newcomers to the universe, Eric Bana and Jason Schwartzman.

One wonders why they are getting the promotion out this early for the film, I didn't expect to see anything until at least February. Especially during filming! Wonder how much dropping the weight changes Rogen's attitude and whether it effects his humor!

Clearly I don't pay enough attention to the career of Adam Sandler, because I didn't realize until just recently that Sandler's next movie in production is a collaboration with producer/director/writer Judd Apatow. Maybe this doesn't seem like such a big deal; after all, the pair have already worked together on YOU DON'T MESS WITH THE ZOHAN earlier this year, which Sandler starred in and cowrote with Apatow.

But still, I think the pair's new project - FUNNY PEOPLE, slated for release in 2009 - suggests a fairly big shift in terms of Sandler's career, and could lead to what I'll call a Seth Rogen-type effect for the actor.

To be honest, I'm not a big Sandler fan. His earlier movies HAPPY GILMORE and BILLY MADISON are fine enough, easy diversions. I think of them as excellent movies to run in the background while I'm loading the dishwasher - and if you couldn't tell, that's not really a compliment. I apply that same low standard to ARMAGEDDON. But Sandler has a talent for creating at least one truly memorable comic setpiece per movie, as well as the ability to make some decent money at the box office. His schtick - although it's one ...

Harold Ramis has confirmed to Chicago Tribune's Pop Machine that Judd Apatow is officially on board as co-producer of the newly announced Ghostbusters III which will be scribed by NBC's The Office writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky.

Ramis who played the scientist Egon in the two films to date, also confirms the movie is being made with the intention of having the original four cast members as "mentors" to a newer generation which will now almost certainly involve Seth Rogen (because of Apatow's involvement) and probably Paul Rudd. I think those two more than any other are shoe-ins here.

So there's a totally unfounded rumor online at Dread Central that Judd Apatow has not only convinced Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Dan Ackroyd and Ernie Hudson to return for a third Ghost Busters movie some twenty years after the last picture but also that they would use the film to pass the torch to Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Seth Rogen and Romany Malco.

All four actors made up the core cast of The 40 Year Old Virgin and have since starred in many various Apatow projects.

But as with every Ghost Busters rumor of the last ten years, Bill Murray seems in no mood to do another of these pictures no matter how much money they throw at him.

Why would things be so different now?

Though I would say this. If Apatow could ever convince Ackroyd, Ramis & Murray to give up the rights to the series (and if anyone could, it would be Apatow) then I'm convinced he could make a great movie with his usual crew AS LONG as he didn't got the remake route.

For example, I would rather see Rogen as a new character, rather than trying to be Bill Murray.

And this kind of rumor story isn't particularly new. A ...

Just like Cohen and Ferrell's last pairing Talladega Nights, this is another Judd Apatow production and it is being scribed right now by Etan Cohen (Idiocracy, Tropic Thunder) but no director is attached as of yet.

"Just the idea of Sacha and Will as Sherlock Holmes and Watson makes us laugh," said Col co-prexy Matt Tolmach. "Sacha and Will are two of the funniest and most talented guys on the planet, and having them take on these two iconic characters is frankly hilarious."
More PINK PANTHER and STARSKY AND HUTCH than the kind of Sherlock Holmes movie we really want to see.

Hopefully this won't scare Warner Bros. to either rush or scrap their version of the character altogether because that really would be a travesty. Give me straight material of this iconic character, not two loons goofing around for a paycheck.

Who for Moriarty then... Adam Sandler?

Eric Bana has been confirmed as one of the leads in Judd Apatow's semi-autobiographical film about stand up comedy titled Funny People. Bana, a former stand up himself will be playing the husband to Leslie Mann (Apatow's real life wife), so you could justifably say Bana is playing Apatow in the movie.

Variety say that Jason Schwartzman and Jonah Hill (what a suprise) have also joined the cast, which is toplined by Adam Sandler and also Seth Rogen. Plot details are still being kept hush hush, though it's believed that it focuses on a comedian who has suffered a near death experience.

Production begins mid September on the Universal and Columbia Pictures film due out next year, which marks the third written and directed material from Apatow after the brilliant Knocked Up and The 40 Year Old Virgin.

Ok, so we know Judd Apatow is a big fan of Munich.

Or at least we know that he wrote a character that was a big fan of Munich, which in turn most likely means he enjoyed it too. Or maybe he just used it for comedic value and has never even seen the movie?

Ah well. We know that he is aware of Munich at the very least...

The word from CHUD is that Bana is in talks with Apatow for his next movie, which we found out a few days ago would revolve around a stand-up comedian and would be part semi biographical from the comedy genius. Now here's something I didn't know which adds just that extra veritas to the possible rumor and casting. Bana started life in Australia as a stand up comedian! PERFECT!If talks are true, Bana has been offered a big role... playing husband to Leslie Mann. Also on board are Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen but the title of the film is as yet unknown.

Talking to MTV, Judd Apatow has revealed that his mysterious third directing movie after the brilliant 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up will be about stand-up comics, something that is close to his heart having spent years on the circuit trying to make a name for himself in the 90's.

Adam Sandler (with whom he travelled and roomed together before either were famous and will lead this movie), regular Apatow man Seth Rogen and Apatow's real life wife Leslie Mann make-up the cast so far...
"It's a comedy, but it has more drama in it. A hilarious drama is what I'm going for," Apatow said. "Every movie, I'm trying to find a way to go deeper, to tell stories about subjects that are important and make them less and less broad while making them equally as funny. [This film is] another step in that progression".
The movie is still untitled but does have a tentative release date of July 31th 2009, currently opening opposite the Tony Scott remake of The Taking of Pelham 123.

In the past I've tagged the movies of Judd Apatow as being "the future of the romantic comedy" to some sneers and uncomfortable anger in our readers but I ...

How can you base a spoof basically on one movie? Surely that'd be a really flimsy basis for a comedy. I mean yeah, you can all point out HOT SHOTS and the sequel but really they're only any good with hindsight, and in an age when we can call any piece of crap kitsch or retro and make it cool. At the end of the day these kind of movies pale next to the real zaniness of AIRPLANE, POLICE SQUAD and even the other Judd Apatow produced pieces of gimmickry. If you like Apatow, just watch ANCHORMAN or FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL, don't just do what Hollywood wants and watch this because his name is attached.

The film seems far too much like someone sat down and watched WALK THE LINE whilst making a list of all the things they didn't like, then had some actors recreate this list of grievances in over-the-top ways. Which really isn't that ...

Last night I saw Forgetting Sarah Marshall at my local cinema and it's hands down the funniest film I've seen in years. It might be the funniest movie since The 40 Year Old Virgin.

Remember when you saw Superbad and those first 15 minutes were absolutely killing your stomach because you just couldn't stop laughing and then it kinda went a bit south for the rest of the film only peaking back up again in a few brief moments? Well Forgetting Sarah Marshall is hilarious for about 90% of the time.

It's clunky, very badly cut together but man... if Jason Segel doesn't win you over with the almost unforgivably pathetic character he has written for himself, or if you don't fall badly in love with Mila Kunis everytime she smiles or just plain laugh out loud at least a million times then I don't know what will do it for ya.

It's not as poignant as Knocked Up but I say the future of the rom-com is looking extremely bright with this Judd Apatow crew and it's a resurrecting movement in cinema which is extremely welcomed. For too long women have enjoyed exclusive female rom-com's that would star the likes of Meg ...

There's always a new Judd Apatow movie on the horizon. You can't avoid them guys, he has too many people wanting to jump onto the bandwagon.

Opening in August (Sept for UK) is The Pineapple Express, a strange choice of film for the critically acclaimed indie director David Gordon Green who looks to give us his take on Pulp Fiction with his comedic drugs/gangster flick.

If you missed the brilliant red band trailer, you can see it HERE.

Well worth a look!

Seth Rogen, James Franco, Danny McBride and Amber Heard are the main players and the pretty lame first poster can be seen below. Still lots of time for the guys to come up with something better because there ain't no way I would ever be interested in this movie if I knew nothing about it and only saw this...

Nick Stoller (writer/director) & Jason Segel (writer/actor), the two graduates from the Judd Apatow academy whose male-centric comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall opens next month have struck a deal with Disney to helm the next Muppets movie.

Segel and Stoller will write the script and Stoller will direct.

Are you surprised these guys got the gig? Yeah me too but it would seem their negotiations skills and love for the characters is what won out in the end.

Here's Variety's take on the matter...
In "Sarah Marshall" Segel's character writes a "Dracula" musical performed by puppets. Those cloth creatures were custom-made by the Henson puppeteers, and the experience emboldened Segel to pitch his concept for a Muppets movie when he was invited in for a general meeting with exec Kristin Burr. Segel got a deal in the room and enlisted Stoller to co-write and direct the project.
It would seem that the Muppets make quite a big appearance in Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

So with them being fans of the Muppets, then we have no reason to think they will write in gay jokes, sexual references or outrageous social misfits... right?

The last Muppets movie was an awful t.v. film The Muppets Wizard of Oz, with the last theatrical ...

Judd Apatow's casts are becoming as predictable as Kevin Smith's but they always seem to work well and are funny together, so I'm all for it.

Apatow's third directing effort after The 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up will begin shooting late summer (or early fall) and will star Seth Rogen and the director's real life wife Leslie Mann, both of which appeared in the above mentioned movies. Adam Sandler who worked on the script of his upcoming comedy You Don't Mess With the Zohan with Apatow, is also on board.

The film is a co-production of Universal and Sony Pictures but is currently untitled and the plot a mystery.

I'll really enjoyed the two directing Apatow efforts so far and it's pretty obvious that he keeps the best things he writes for himself as opposed to the movies he writers or co-writes and gets someone else to helm. Knocked Up was funny and sweet. The 40 Year Old Virgin was the same. A hat trick would be nice.
