Coen Brothers adaptation of Charles Potter's 1968 novel True Grit, a property already firmly established in the Western cannon for it's superb late 60s movie that featured an eye patched John Wayne in his only Oscar winning role, is an intriguing project, probably the most intriguing they've ever set out to make.

The revenge Western material is so up the Coens alley, it's tailor made for them in so many ways, yet I can't yet envision this tale being told without John Wayne. Maybe once we get some stills, posters, trailers etc. and I've had more time to think about Jeff Bridges as the lead, I will start to feel more comfortable with the idea of this remake.

My negativity certainly isn't down to the fact I don't think the Coens are capable of making a killer movie out of this story and they've certainly impressed with their casting.

Last month they hired Jeff Bridges to play the stubborn and world weary U.S. Marshal Reuben J. 'Rooster' Cogburn, a drunk who helps a 14-year old girl track down her father's killer in hostile Indian territory.

Now comes word out of Variety that Matt Damon is in talks to play the lawman/texas ranger who later ...

JOSH BROLIN IS JONAH HEX!

I mean it's not quite as gruesome as I would have liked but then when you have someone as handsome and marketable as Josh Brolin, I guess what did we expect really?

It's kind of the Johnny Depp syndrome, you need to be able to see how handsome he is, even if he is playing a notoriously ugly and social outcast (Sweeny Todd, Ichabad Crane, the detective out of From Hell who's name escapes me right now).

A sign of the times then that Jonah Hex is being made into a Hollywood movie, a sign that Hollywood is embracing a return for the Spaghetti Western? I'm really hoping they can pull this one off, you all know I've got a hard on for Sergio Leone movies and well I'm desperate to see The Dark Tower made into a film series, or at least the first book The Gunslinger adapted faithfully, and this is the closest we are going to get to that right now.

Hex might just spark J.J. Abrams to give that franchise which he owns the rights too, a little push of his powerful magic wand.

Gotta think there's lots of post-production CGI to follow on Brolin's face, ...

Still not convinced that Josh Brolin is in complete charge of the JONAH HEX project at Warner Bros/DC?

Well read on...

Last November, we heard Brolin had effectively fired screenwriters Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor from HEX, replacing them with his out of left field choice of Jimmy Hayward (HORTON HEARS A WHO) to direct, after he liked the pitch the director sent him via-email.

Earlier, we heard in an interview article at MTV that Brolin admitted the Neveldine & Taylor's script for the film was awful but was attraced to the project anyway because of what he thought he could do with it.

Brolin said...
...once I started putting people in my mind and saying what if I put Malkovich in this role then what does this movie become?
So unsurprisingly after we knew exactly which actor he wanted, today comes the news from Variety that John Malkovich has been hired to play the main villain in JONAH HEX. Warner Bros. are keeping their star happy once again.

Malkovich will play Quentin Turnbull, a key recurring villain in the comics canon who is known by his signature cane which carries an eagle top.

You see, Turnbull's son Jeb was Jonah's best friend in the Confederate Army but after Jeb's ...

Woody Allen has landed Josh Brolin and Anthony Hopkins for this next movie according to Variety.

Well, I say "next movie", if your in the U.K. his "next" movie is VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA as it doesn't open till Friday. Which is a pretty cool movie by the way and is well worth your time, not least because Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz make the most amazing on screen European couple I've seen since 60's Godard.

So much raw sexual chemistry, so much emotional connectivity. Just great and Cruz was well deserving of her Oscar nomination in what I think is her most comfortable performance of her career.

And well technically speaking Allen's "next" movie is the one he has just completed titled WHATEVER WORKS, his love drama with Larry David and THE WRESTLER's Evan Rachel Wood, which I simply can't wait to see. Not least because David/Allen is one helluva an interesting pairing.

That one should be out in the U.S. late Summer from Sony Pictures Classics with once again a February/March 2010 release in the U.K.

But no his "next", "next" movie is untitled but will star Hopkins and Brolin.

It will mark his return to London where he shot MATCH POINT, SCOOP and CASSANDRA'S ...

Josh Brolin who became too big for CRANK creators Brian Taylor and Mark Neveldine and forcing the duo who had actually originally pitched the movie adaptation of DC Comics Western character JONAH HEX to Warner Bros to leave the project, has revealed to Collider how he chose their replacement.

He basically liked the e-mail Jimmy Hayward, director of HORTON HEARS A WHO, sent him...
"He got an e-mail to me somehow, someway. He wasn't somebody we were even beginning to look at and I read the e-mail and was completely blown away by it. I had to meet the guy. I ended up meeting the guy and I think he's so far beyond most of us in his expertise and his filmic abilities. It was one of those things where I brought him to the studio and I said, 'I think this is the guy. I don't know why.' But I think he's a brilliant, brilliant filmmaker. I can't wait to see what he does. So I don't know how to answer your question, but I can't wait to see what he does."

I went into MILK with the impression I was about to see a film that was a typical Oscar candidate. Packed with acting talent and taking on a worthy topic and an interesting character as its subject, MILK reeked of another Hollywood-does-arthouse affair. When I came out of the cinema, I hadn't let go of that viewpoint. The story was tight, the dialogue flowed comfortably but rarely pushed the boundaries, and all the big names put in strong performances that genuinely brought the characters to life. It was only after a few days that I really appreciated what a well-crafted and complete film this is.

The biography of Harvey Milk, gay rights activist and the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California, is structured through a speech he recorded to be played only in the event of his death by assassination. This structural decision was superb because it instantly makes you conscious of the poignant fragility of the story as it unfolds. Each chapter is digested as a fleeting moment of a life cut short, and this is a dimension that I cannot overemphasize the importance of.

When we meet Harvey for the first time, as an ...

Lexi Alexander (director of GREEN STREET and the upcoming PUNISHER: WAR ZONE) has been sent the script for the Warner Bros/DC comic book property JONAH HEX.

Alexander admits to IGN that she is only one of several directors who have been sent the script to mull over after the studio pushed script writers Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor off the directing duties of their gunslinging hero.

Even though Neveldine and Taylor have departed the project, it's still their script that the potential directors have been reading. Naturally, Alexander admits she is very interested in the project because of Josh Brolin's possible attachment. Brolin is playing the wait and see game to see who WB hire.

Hopefully, WB have sent the script to more experienced and established directors than Lexi because I firmly believe with Brolin on board, hardly anyone is out of their reach for this property now. Even The Coens, perhaps?

The much wanted Josh Brolin has told MTV that he did indeed turn down a role in the upcoming Warner Bros. revival of the TERMINATOR franchise because he ultimately felt "it didn't feel right".

McG boastingly told the world earlier in the year that he was going after Brolin who at that point had just come off an incredible 2007 and had just seen himself cast as George W. Bush in Oliver Stone's W. In the end, Brolin turned WB down and Sam Worthington instead took the role of Marcus.

“Yeah. I talked to Christian [Bale] for a couple hours,” Brolin told MTV. “I really liked the script though I hear that’s not what they filmed. The one I read was very interesting and dark. Ultimately though I didn’t think it felt right.”
Securing Brolin would have been a massive coup for McG who already at that point had the massive A-lister of Christian Bale on his side and in great timing is now coming off one of the biggest movies of all time with THE DARK KNIGHT.

Brolin in the coming weeks with have to decide if another Warner Bros. tentpole, that of JONAH HEX, is right for him to do. I speculated ...

Those "creative differences" we spoke about yesterday regarding the sudden dismissal of CRANK creators Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor from the upcoming Warner Bros./DC tentpole JONAH HEX may well translate as "the script sucked and they didn't know what they were doing".

Just ask star Josh Brolin who candidly tells MTV exactly that...
“When I first read it I thought, oh my God it’s awful!” Brolin exclaimed to MTV News. “And then I had a moment a week later and I thought why is it awful? Maybe the thing to do is to do the most awful movie I can find.”
And the following quotes are what I find even more interesting...
"But once I started putting people in my mind and saying what if I put Malkovich in this role then what does this movie become? Now let’s put this producer and director on it and think about how it plays out. Then it becomes fun. Now I love that movie. If you have a great filmmaker come in then suddenly these gags and characters become interesting.”
If he started putting new directors on it, if great filmmakers suddenly come in? Does that mean Brolin has effectively told WB to ditch those CRANK guys ...

CRANK directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor have bailed on the big DC Comics/Warner Bros. tentpole JONAH HEX because of "creative differences" say Variety.

They leave behind the script they collaborated on and lead Josh Brolin, possibly the most sought out actor in Hollywood right now.

Warner Bros. are quickly looking to fill the directing gap because if they are to keep Brolin the movie must start filming in March. Which be warned at this point usually sees someone like Brett Ratner (RUSH HOUR) or John Moore (MAX PAYNE) get themselves attached.

JONAH HEX revolves around a partially disfigured Clint Eastwood style gunslinger and bounty hunter who is often depicted in an old school spaghetti western environment crossed with sci-fi and pulp elements. It's a big property in WB/DC canon and the initial hiring of the CRANK guys signalled a heavy action orientated adaptation.

James Mangold (3:10 TO YUMA) would be a guy I would go to straight away for this, especially with him being out of work right now. Others would be Christopher Nolan (might as well offer it to him), The Coen Brothers (who might like the chance of working with Brolin again but would probably do a page 1 re-write) and ...

Taking as its central platform the build-up to the invasion of Iraq in 2003 and the subsequent, immediate aftermath when cracks in the endeavour started to appear, Oliver Stone’s W. intercuts these scenes of the familiar president with a catalogue of moments and events that eventually led him to the White House.

From hazing at the traditional Bush family fraternity of Delta Kappa at Yale, where he amusingly responds to a question about following the family into politics with a drunkenly unburdened ‘hell no..’, to his first step onto the political ladder as Governor of Texas we get W. the whole package. The directionless graduate who can’t or won’t hold down any job that Bush Senior arranges for him, the accompanying drinking problem (‘What are you, a Kennedy?’), the struggle to find his own way out of his father’s shadow, and his lifelong love of the simplicity of baseball.

The film even begins with, and continues as a motif, Bush in his presidential years dreaming of standing in an empty baseball stadium, participating in his own solitary and private game.

It’s all told with a surprisingly light, and more sardonic tone; as if Stone has taken a step sideways from his more serious ...

On Thursday night, at the London Film Festival, held the Gala premiere of Oliver Stone’s W. and braving the rain, rabid press photographers, a dutch hack with the world’s biggest umbrella, and a particularly crazy Russian TV reporter I managed to get a few shots.

Before that though, don't forget to check out my review of the movie!

I’ve been to a few of these premieres before but the gauntlet the actors face is still an eye-opener. Especially when they are as beautiful as Elizabeth Banks, who plays Laura Bush in the movie...

Walking down the red carpet with the press and tv crews on one side and the public on the other, each of them yelling and screaming for attention; and at the end near the cinema entrance the banks of the paparazzi. It’s like watching a march towards a firing squad.

Still, the actors and Oliver Stone know why they’re there and they sign autographs, do the chit-chat, pose on queue, even do a bit of hair combing (that's you Mr. Stone).

At one particulary scary moment Rebecca Loos stepped into shot, but after shouting 'Security!' a few times she wandered off. You can’t help getting caught up in it, and pretty soon ...

Jeffrey Wells over at Hollywood Elsewhere is reporting that Josh Brolin, the OWF actor of 2007 and who is just about to be seen playing George W. Bush... is signed on to play the comic book Western anti-hero JONAH HEX.

For Brolin it would be his second cowboy role in quick succession after playing opportunist Llewelyn Moss in NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, a modern day western/thriller. He was also star of the Western show Into the West in 2005.

Although Warner Bros. are 100% in denial over the deal, Wells is trusting his close friends and sources, sticking to his guns that Brolin will lead the graphic novel adaptation about a scarred and damaged gunslinger in the late 19th century who is a mix between the Clint Eastwood characters Josey Wells & The Man With No Name.

If it is true, it's a hell of a coup for CRANK writer/directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor who may have just secured the most in demand leading actor outside of Christian Bale in Hollywood today. And for a pulpy, b-movie style Western which we believe will have sci-fi undertones, it's a risk from Brolin... but he's not one to shy away from controversial roles.

Though ...

The final trailer for Oliver Stone's W. is a beauty, the best cut of the lot and the one that really gets me jazzed up to see it the most.

I never, ever, thought I would be this interested in a piece of propaganda from Oliver Stone, especially when I was disappointed by much of his intentions with WORLD TRADE CENTER. This though looks fantastic and I just love Josh Brolin's scream at the end, very HOME ALONE esque...

USA Today have also revealed how the movie's opening scene plays out...

A man stands in the middle of a sunny baseball field, beaming a smile as the roar of an approving crowd is heard.
An echoing announcer's voice calls out his name: "Ladies and gentlemen, the 43rd president of the United States …" But as the camera pans back, the cheering fades, and the stadium is revealed to be empty.
With outstretched arms and raised head, the character's body forms an unmistakable symbol: W.

W. opens October 17th in the U.S. and November 7th in the U.K.

Watching this brilliant trailer for Gus Van Sant's biopic of the first openly gay elected man in U.S. political office Harvey Milk and I'm glad it's Van Sant that got the chance to make this movie and not Bryan Singer.

No that I mean to discredit Singer in any way but I can't imagine a movie telling this inspiring tale in a better way than this and Sean Penn really looks to have knocked it out of the park.

The trailer also manages the difficult task of making several conflicts in Milk's life apparent and teasing us as to how they will unfold without giving an awful lot away. This is a must see film...

WATCH IT IN HD HERE

Josh Brolin, Emile Hirsch, Diego Luna and James Franco make up what is a compelling cast, though I will say none of them particularly stood out from the trailer.

The movie will start a slow burning release at the end of November and should gradually go wider as December rolls on.

JOSH BROLIN
AS
BRANDON
‘BRAND’
WALSH

Like so many of his co-stars, The Goonies was Josh Brolin's big break, his debut performance as Brandon ‘Brand’ Walsh launching a career that has been on a Lazarus-esque comeback in the last few years. After The Goonies, Brolin starred in skateboard drama Thrashin' before being offered the lead role in 21 Jump Street, a role he turned down in favour of Private Eye, a show that was subsequently cancelled mid-way through the first season. The role in 21 Jump Street eventually went to Johnny Depp and helped kick-start his career.

In 1989, Brolin landed a role on Western TV series The Young Riders alongside the youngest of the Baldwins Stephen Baldwin. Brolin was quiet for a few years before his next notable role in 1996’s comedy Flirting With Disaster alongside Ben Stiller. The following year he starred alongside Mira Sorvino in Guillermo del Toro's Mimic and with Ewan McGregor in Nightwatch.

Brolin’s patchy work continued with big screen adaptation of classic TV series The Mod Squad and the Reese Witherspoon starring Best Laid Plans. In 2000 he starred in Paul Verhoven's invisible man opus Hollow Man.

2003 saw Josh Brolin return to TV as idealistic Senator Bill Sterling in Mr. ...

Listen to this footage below without watching and it doesn't half sound like George W. Bush, Josh Brolin has nailed the voice.

His mannerisms aren't bad either and he does kinda look like Bush but it's the voice that is most impressive.

Here's Access Hollywood's 4 minute behind-the-scenes look at Oliver Stone's upcoming biopic of the current American President, simply titled W.

Lionsgate have also released two new posters from the film, and a new billboard...

W. opens October 17th in the U.S. (no U.K. date just yet).

A real eye catching poster has turned up online for the Oliver Stone directed biopic of George Bush which really succeeds in painting the movie as being a very stripped down and personal look at the much maligned President of the United States.

I really like this poster which along with the previously leaked trailer, is really doing a good job of promoting this picture.

I also really Josh Brolin in this role, though I will admit I was watching Thomas Haden Church in the pretty dire Smart People the other day and I kinda saw him more fitted to the role but Brolin will be great, I'm sure.

Really great.

And another thing I'm wondering, is Stone capable of delivering a movie where we actually care what happens to George Bush? I know this is going the satire/comedy route and is basically an attack on Bush, but will there be any sympathetic light cast on him at all?

Will we be able to buy it if there is?

Guess we will find out October 17th.
