At this point, Jon Favreau has my unreserved faith for this character, and the Marvel universe. I know he has said in the past that he won't direct The Avengers but I watch the new trailer for Iron Man 2 and I can't see a better person for the job. He knows exactly how to tap into what fans want, and he delivers it big time.

The new trailer coasts familiar territory for a while before morphing into a second half of exciting new wonders and orgasmic shots. It's almost all new footage after the half-way mark, and seeing those robotic clones of Iron Man fight against War Machine and Stark is a delight.

We get a great look at the characters of Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell and even Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury makes an appearance. Mickey Rourke's villain Whiplish also gets fleshed out a little more.

See it in Apple HD Quicktime HERE.

There's certainly a feel for The Dark Knight in terms of the action scene direction from Favreau and the obvious face-to-face prison meeting between Stark and Rourke but I can only think that's a good thing. If Favreau can make a movie a 1/4 as tense as Chris Nolan ...

If you were the 4 day old wife to Vince Vaughn, would you not even be a tad concerned that once again, for the 100th time - your new husband is making a movie about a guy who is wrestling with the moral issues surrounding infidelity?

It's a subject that is explicitly close to Vaughn's heart, he's kind of obsessed with it.

Imagine Entertainment topper Brian Grazer came up with the idea say Variety about “a man who learns that his best friend’s wife is cheating and must then navigate treacherous waters to decide what do with that knowledge" which he pitched to Universal who quickly got Allan Loeb (21, Things We Lost in the Fire) to write and Ron Howard on board to direct, and naturally Vince Vaughn to star.

The movie is currently untitled and could shoot in March. We would guess the best friend will be played by none other than Jon Favreau

Together, they just made Couples Retreat, a movie about long term couples who begin to question if they are right for each other on a relationship building holiday and look for options elsewhere, is this sounding familiar to anyone?

The Break-Up, The Wedding Crashes both dealt with similar themes ...

SEE IT NOW IN QUICKTIME HD RIGHT HERE

Stark's still the comic book supehero's comedian. Great scene to kick-off the trailer.

Robert Downey Jr and Gwyneth Paltrow have the best chemistry between a male/female combo in any comic book movie I've ever seen.

"You Complete Me" brought a bigger smile to my face than anything I've seen in any trailer, (barring the opening of the Kick-Ass reel that played at Comic Con with John Williams' Superman score) that I've seen for any movie opening 2010.

Iron Man shows that CGI superheroes can work, in the same way Spider-Man did. Do we think this is because masked, fully costumed hero characters work just fine in CGI but where you have to see the face of the hero composed by CGI, e.g. The Hulk, it just doesn't look right because CGI can't capture the right emotions?

Citizen Kane like screen transitions in a trailer! Jesus, Jon... you have outdone yourself Sir. How cool is that, and how much weight does it bring to the trailer which actually ...

Word got around last week that the first trailer for Iron Man 2 (07.05.10), and the first footage seen since those lucky enough to attend this year's Comic-Con got a sneak glimpse at, will play with prints of Sherlock Holmes (26.12.09), Paramount's strategy being that...

A) Holmes is gonna be a crowd-pleasing, well attended Christmas hit.

B) It stars Robert Downey Jr. in the title role, the star of the Iron Man franchise.

C) Kick-Ass kind of stole the buzz away from the Iron Man sequel at the Con, and this movie doesn't quite have that rip-roaring thunderous mystery buzz the first film had around this time two years ago. We know what Iron Man is all about, we are familiar with Jon Favreau's vision of the character and we like it. Downey Jr as Stark needs no introduction, so a few less weeks/months of a campaign won't hurt his movie.

I think we would all appreciate some surprises before it's released in May.

The reason I've wrote this post, is that I've just been sent a link to Coming Soon who have the front cover image of January's edition of Empire magazine, a copy of which I usually receive on either Monday or Tuesday, ...

As cool as this premise is, my initial reaction to Jon Favreau's circling of the Dreamworks/Universal joint sci-fi/western pulp project Cowboys & Aliens announced in Variety tonight is that it will put him out of the race for The Avengers and possibly the same can be said for Robert Downey Jr too, the latter being an absentee that would delay or kill off the superhero ensemble and that's a damned shame.

Favreau has spoken a few times this year about his interest in getting The Avengers directing gig, and Marvel's version of John Lasseter has mentioned he would have to move directly from finishing Iron Man 2 (which he will complete early 2010, for a release in May next year) to The Avengers if he was to win the job.

But whether that impossibly tight time restriction, or Marvel's sale to Disney yesterday, or just simply a desire to move away from the character of Tony Stark to jump on board an original concept with his man Downey Jr. (attached since last summer), the result remains the same. He won't now be directing The Avengers because if a deal is made, this is what he will be filming next summer instead.

And so ...

I could watch Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn on screen bantering "guy chat" to each other all movie long, so of course I was hooked from the first moment of the trailer for Couples Retreat, a comedy that should be positioning itself as this year's Forgetting Sarah Marshall (a guy flick similarly set on a tropical island that made $104 million worldwide).

Written by Favreau but directed by his pal and usual producer Peter Billingsley (his directorial debut), the movie follows four couples of friends who visit an island paradise in order to sort out their troublesome relationships with one an other. It's almost like a kind of Friends: The Movie and I'm certain one of the later series of that show did something like this.

Vaughns paired with Malin Ackerman,

Jon Favreau's got Sex and the City's Kristin Davis,

Jason Bateman's married to Kristen Bell,

And two actors I'm not overly aware of, Faizon Love's with Tasha Smith.

Cameo's a plenty from Jean Reno, Ken Jeong and the legend that is Peter Serafinowicz, who steals the whole trailer. Hopefully he's got some great screentime.

The trailer made me laugh four separate times, so that's usually a good sign and I'm always one who can get easily drawn in by ...

Jon Favreau has debuted the first official still of Iron Man 2 over at USA Today and I love how the costumes are englufing him. The decision to become this superhero, but more specifically the decision to tell the world that Tony Stark is Iron Man is going to be new territory to explore in comic book movies.

We haven't gone down this path before. Should be pretty interesting to see where it leads, and whether it's that pressure which sends him into drinking?

UPDATED:

E! Entertainment have confirmed a February 14th scoop that Scarlett Johansson will play Black Widow, the soviet spy who has a good side in IRON MAN 2.

The role firmly sets her up for future movies, including THE AVENGERS in 2012.

Nikki Finke claims Johansson screen-tested for the role at the beginning of the year but lost out to Emily Blunt, but now Blunt is travelling with Jack Black's Gulliver, they went back to her and offered Johansson the part.

Physically she's not right, her acting style only suits love triangle drama's from what I've seen... it's kinda like asking Marilyn Monroe to play TOMB RAIDER.

Blunt was just right for the role... Johansson may be out of her depth here. When an actress like Eliza Dushku lobbied so hard for the role, I think Favreau dropped the ball on this one.

A further update, Variety adds that Rourke will be playing both Whiplash and Crymson Dynamo, some kind of mixing of two villains.

END OF UPDATE...

"A significant" higher offer from Marvel than the $250,000 that was originally put on the table has secured the signature of Mickey Rourke for IRON MAN 2 according to Nikki Finke.

Holding out for a better deal, just as Samuel L. Jackson ...

Jon Favreau has confirmed to E! (via The Playlist) that 20th Century Fox have used their pre-agreed option from THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA to nab actress Emily Blunt for one of the their tentpoles, casting her in GULLIVER'S TRAVELS, the upcoming adventure comedy starring Jack Black.

So it's confirmed she is out as Black Widow, which really sucks because she was the perfect actress for the role but of course she can't be in two places at once.

Filming on IRON MAN 2 will begin in just over two months so Favreau is likely to already be deep into the process of finding her replacement....

Now that Emily Blunt is out, who should play Emily Blunt in IRON MAN 2?
( polls)

Scarlett Johansson was rumored a few weeks ago to replace Blunt. Her recent hair dye has also fuelled this speculation, though I can't help but feel she is no good for a superhero role. And imaging her doing a Russian accent is a dreadful worry.

DOLLHOUSE actress Eliza Dushku has lobbyed for the part on Howard Stern and would be a really solid choice...
"They’re doing Iron Man 2, and I’m so perfect for the Black Widow character, that they just need to get into ...

Variety are now posting rumors. So bare this in mind, this is not an official confirmation.

But anyway, the trade industry publication say uber hot and uber talented Brit actress Emily Blunt from THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA (and if it ever gets released Universal's THE WOLF MAN), is the front runner to play Black Widow in IRON MAN 2.

Real name Natasha Romanoff, Black Widow is a soviet super spy who wears a skintight black costume that is enhanced by high-tech weaponry. Only in the comics eh?

She would be the femme fatale of the picture and would join Sam Rockwell and Mickey Rourke (pending expected contract agreements) as the third new nemesis for Downey Jr's Stark.

And the red-headed character in comic book form looks like this and if you know her arc, it could be a big setup for future movies...

Presumably they are also considering Rachel McAdams, another red-head who I remember being considered for the role of Pepper Potts before Gwyneth Paltrow won the part.

Not quite sure what's going on out there with IRON MAN 2 and Marvel at the moment. Director Jon Favreau, who was so talkative when he was making the original IRON MAN, hasn't said a word about ...

This seems legit, a trade announcement from both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter that Jon Favreau has once again out done himself with his casting for the IRON MAN franchise.

Putting in doubt what AICN call a "premature casting announcement" for Stallone's THE EXPENDABLES, Mickey Rourke is in talks to play a tattooed Russian heavy named Ivan who becomes a man with deadly, technologically enhanced coilsplay. He goes by the name Crimson Dynamo.

The Crimson Dynamo wears an armored battle-suit that serves as an exoskeleton, providing the wearer with superhuman strength and durability. The suit's outer layer was composed of a carborundum matrix alloy, and is equipped with: hand-blasters that can fire high-frequency electrical bolts; small missiles contained in the back shoulder area of the battle-suit; computers and radio transmitter and receiver; boot jets that allow flight. Subsequent versions of the battle-suit have featured upgrades of various kinds, by the Gremlin and other Russian scientists.
Both IRON MAN 2 and THE EXPENDABLES will be shooting at roughly the same time, it's probably going to be one or the other for Rourke. The sensible career choice of course would be to go for IRON MAN, which probably will also have the big money attached ...

Here's a superhero tidbit from this week which probably does carry some weight of truth behind it, namely because not only does it sound like the kind of smart move Marvel Films have been making recently but it's also sourced from Latino Review, who get it more often right than wrong.

LR say that Marvel will be further fleshing out their cross connections of their characters by having Tim Robbins play Howard Stark, the rich billionaire father of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and the Howard Hughes like figure (without the insanity) who founded Stark Industries in more than one upcoming movie.

The character is expected to be used for FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA (as that is set during World War II, a time when Howard Stark's business was thriving and he worked closely with the government) and in flashback scenes in THE AVENGERS and IRON MAN 2.

LR don't mention this but I wouldn't be surprised if this also allows Jeff Bridges to return for IRON MAN 2 flashback scenes, showing his close bond with Howard Stark which just adds a little bit of tragedy to what happened to that character when greed took over.

Love the idea. Anything that grows the Marvel ...

IRON MAN himself, Robert Downey Jr spoke to MTV this week and told the site how much pressure is on the talent behind the superhero team-up ensemble THE AVENGERS and how much he hopes the realism that Jon Favreau brought to IRON MAN will carry over for that movie.

“If we don’t get it right, it’s really going to suck. It has to be the crowning blow of Marvel’s best and brightest, because it’s the hardest thing to get right. It’s tough to spin all the plates for one of these characters,” Downey tells MTV, later adding: “The danger you run with colliding all these worlds is that Jon was very certain that “Iron Man” should be set in a very realistic way. Nothing that happened in Iron Man is really outside the realm of possibility. Once you start talking about Valhalla and supersized super soldiers and jolly green giants, it warrants much further discussion.”
Which is why Jon Favreau is the best choice to direct this movie. He is currently only attached as executive producer but for me, he seems to be the guy that gets the Marvel universe more than anyone else and you just can't compare THE INCREDIBLE HULK ...

Finally we are starting to scratch against the surface of mystery that surrounded the sacking of Terrence Howard from IRON MAN 2 which the trades quite conspicuously at the time said was for pay demands.

Entertainment Weekly report that there were two factors in Marvel's decision to let him go. The first was Terrence Howard's "difficult" behavior on the set of the film. They claim that Jon Favreau got so frustrated with Howard's attitude and performance that he spent way more hours than he should have chopping and basically minimalizing his role as Col. Jim Rhodes from a big character, to a supporting player.

Another problem was that in the early days of casting, Howard was brought on to the film when no other stars had signed a contract. Marvel, not expecting to get the likes of Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeff Bridges for the movie, probably offered Howard too big a contract to sign on to secure the first big name for the film.

By the time it was evident that the top Hollywood names were interested in joining this comic book property it was too late for them to renogiate. Leaving Howard, with some of his performance on the ...

Though we expected at least two of these names to sign on for THE AVENGERS, it's still nice to get official confirmation from Marvel Entertainment today that Robert Downey Jr, Don Cheadle and Jon Favreau have signed on for the big Summer 2011 tentpole.

Downey Jr and Cheadle (as the new Jim Rhodes) will be part of the huge ensemble cast. Favreau, director of IRON MAN and it's upcoming sequel, will only executive producer. We can only speculate that his name is in the mix to also direct.

The press release gives us the first synopsis for the movie...
THE AVENGERS will bring together the super hero team of Marvel Comics characters for the first time ever, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk and more, as they are forced to band together to battle the biggest foe they've ever faced.
Kevin Feige, President of Marvel spoke of Cheadle's involvement in the future of the franchise...
"We are very excited about working with the extraordinarily talented Don Cheadle as we expand the role of Rhodey in Iron Man 2. It has already become apparent as we prep the movie for production, that the dynamic between Robert and Don will take Iron Man 2 to ...

"Next time" said Terrence Howard's Col. Jim Rhodes admiring the IRON MAN suit in his good friend Tony Stark's basement towards the end of this year's Marvel epic.

It got me excited, I almost geeked out in the theatre much to the dismay of my girlfriend who didn't have a clue what I was talking about. For those in the know, it was clearly a not so subtle hint from director Jon Favreau that he wanted the character to grow in the sequel to take on the mantle of War Machine.

It's clear Favreau had big plans for Howard and they had a great bond. But once again, those tight-fisted idiots at Marvel (who remember, nearly dropped Favreau himself because he wanted a slight pay rise) have dropped the Howard from the movie's sequel and replaced him with the cheaper Don Cheadle.

It's pretty clear from the wording of The Hollywood Reporter that Cheadle was very much Marvel's casting and not Favreau's, the studio wanting him for this project for quite some time.

Well I'm shocked that Favreau and Robert Downey Jr. haven't walked on the project because of this. I mean I'm sure they put up a fight because it was clear from ...

Wow, yesterday morning was a little like Christmas for me. I get sent an awful lot of stuff through the post on a weekly basis to promote but rarely whatever I open ever gives me the gleeful feeling of excitement that I barely take off the wrapper before placing the disc STRAIGHT into my player.

I opened up the envelope and had this guy staring back at me, 30 seconds later I was in my chair pressing play on this baby...

What an amazing cover, no studio has handled a comic book movie as well as this one in the history of cinema. Marvel, in remarkably their first solo outing created a giant of a picture here with IRON MAN, that was marketed with perfection, it was cast right with exactly the best director behind the job. Every facet of detail was perfect and this new Blu-Ray transfer of one of the year's best films is the high quality you would expect such a great movie to receive.

This is without doubt, the best film I have seen in Blu-Ray. The colours are sharp, the reds, the blues all feel clean and crisp but never over-the-top. I once heard someone say that HD ...

One of the more ridiculous attempts at cashing in on a recent successful film is the front cover image of the new Blu-Ray transfer of DAREDEVIL: THE DIRECTOR'S CUT which came out on Tuesday in the U.S.

Can you see it?

The stupid little grey box that says, "Featuring Jon Favreau, director of IRON MAN as Foggy Nelson"!. lol.

Now you remember DAREDEVIL right? Jon Favreau was best friend to Ben Affleck's Matt Murdock, I believe he was only ever present in scenes with Ben. He was the typical support character for Ben, if you have ever seen the excellent show Curb Your Enthusiasim, he was much like Larry David's friend Jeff.

So how can Marvel possibly justify putting his name on the front cover in front of the three leads Affleck (who is playing the title character no less but of course, he ain't that popular no more), Jennifer Garner and Colin Farrell?

Well apparently because he directed (notice the word DIRECTED) IRON MAN, that juggernaut Paramount movie this year. Which he also, even more briefly, appeared in. So because he directed IRON MAN, does that suddenly mean there will be a rush on to see him support DAREDEVIL, a movie five years old? ...

Yesterday's Variety informed us that Jon Favreau, Vince Vaughn and Jason Bateman were all set to team for the comedy COUPLES RETREAT, a movie which Favreau himself wrote from an idea hatched by Vaughn and his great friend Peter Billingsley will direct.

Got all that?

Story follows four couples who go to a tropical island resort. While one couple is there to work on their marriage, the others are there to play but soon discover that participation in the resort’s couples therapy is not optional
Billingsley is an actor/producer who has worked closely with Favreau and Vaughn in the last few years... most notably appearing in IRON MAN, and also executive producing that superhero movie along with Vaughn's upcoming festive rom-com FOUR CHRISTMASES.

All four of these guys also appeared in the 2006 comedy THE BREAK-UP, which featured a stunning (and obviously helped because it was a projection of real life) friendship between Vaughn and Favreau.

Shooting should begin late October in Bora Bora and Los Angeles.

I've noticed in the last few days a heavy increase in Christmas promotion around my local high street stores. The festive season really does seem to be getting earlier every year doesn't it?

And it's the same with the film industry. The last thing I want to see in mid-September, when the weather should still officially be "ok" (it's not) is a trailer for a damn festive movie. It's just way too soon. It also doesn't help when the movie looks as lame as this..

AFTER FRED CLAUS, SEE THE TRAILER FOR VINCE VAUGHN'S SECOND FESTIVE DISASTER IN CONSECUTIVE YEARS!

Don't you just hate mean-spirited Christmas movies? Especially mean-spirited romantic comedy Christmas movies?

We've heard lots of rumblings about troubles on the set of FOUR CHRISTMASES between co-stars Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn and you can see they have no chemistry together. You struggle to believe they actually like each other, let alone that they are in love.

I didn't laugh once, the jokes are awkward and uncomfortable. It looks stupid and actually rather vile. There's nothing of interest here, no hook or a resemblance of a plot worthy of anyone's money, unless you think seeing Jon Favreau with a dodgy biker haircuit is interesting?
