Principal photography is set to begin in July on John Carpetenter's first movie in eight years, his psychological thriller The Ward, set in a mental institution where a young woman is haunted by a mysterious and deadly ghost.

We've known for a while that one of Hollywood's biggest young starlets Amber Heard will lead as Kirsten and now according to The Hollywood Reporter, another "scream queen", Friday the 13th's Danielle Panabaker will co-star. She will play a fellow patient, but a flirty one who faces electroshock therapy.

The legendary John Carpenter will direct his first film since 2001's Ghost of Mars, based on a script by rookie scribes Michael and Shawn Rasmussen (with revisions by Jim Agnew and Sean Keller who wrote Carpenter's so far undeveloped L.A. Gothic) at Echo Lake Entertainment and A Bigger Boat.

EIGHT long years since Carpenter made a movie... and in truth it's been a long longer since that he actually made something worthwhile. But I like the sound of this one, it's very classic Carpenter and will have that spine-tingling claustrophobia that he can project show well. Fingers crossed on this one, the recent glorious return of Sam Raimi to the genre fills me with hope that Carpenter can ...

John Carpenter revolved his legendary horror movie HALLOWEEN on the book shy, girl next door, rather nerdy Laure Strode (as played by Jamie Lee Curtis) and setup a genre stereotype of "final girl"which flooded three decades of the slasher genre.

But now times have changed. The horror genre has moved on and has now become accustomed to accommodating extraordinarily hot women as their leads. Girls like Mary Elizabeth Winstead for FINAL DESTINATION 3 and Amber Heard in ALL THE BOYS LOVE MANDY LANE.

Sarah Michelle Gellar for THE GRUDGE. Naomi Watts for THE RING.

And now Carpenter has realised it too. He has hired Mandy Lane herself, Amber Heard to lead his long awaited return to horror...

She will star in THE WARD, an intense psychological thriller set in a mental institution where a young woman, Kristen (played by Heard) is haunted by a mysterious and deadly ghost. As danger creeps closer, she comes to realize that this ghost might be darker than she could have imagined.

Carpenter will direct based on a script by rookie scribes Michael and Shawn Rasmussen at Echo Lake Entertainment and A Bigger Boat according to Bloody Disgusting...
““The Ward” is the kind of script that I’ve been looking for: a complex, ...

You know as bad as ROB ZOMBIE'S HALLOWEEN was, outside of John Carpenter he delivered a more effective slasher film (i.e. everything that dealt with the shape) than any of the countless sequels over the past three decades.

So I'm not going to rip him to shreds about helming a sequel. I think he has a good HALLOWEN-esque movie in him and now free from the shackles of Carpenter's vision (which he never had a chance in matching anyway) he might be able to deliver something really good. Though Variety tell me it will be titled H2... which well, can any movie titled that really be good? At least it's coming out in October this time though, that's something at least for a movie about a killer who murders on Halloween night!

Poor old John Carpenter is to be remade again.

I say poor, in actual fact I dare say he has made a pretty penny out of the recent slurge of big budget remakes of HALLOWEEN and ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13. Now Universal based Strike Entertainment are betting on his cult 1998 social satire horror THEY LIVE which starred wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper as being the next Carpenter cash-cow.

The Hollywood Reporter say talks are well underway between Universal and the rights owner Les Mougins for the THEY LIVE property. Mougins, an entrepreneur and music mogul holds the rights to Carpenter's PRINCE OF DARKNESS and VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED also as part of a strange deal with Blondie and Alice Cooper!
The original film, part sci-fi thriller and part social satire, told the story of a down-on-his-luck construction worker (Roddy Piper) who discovers glasses that let him see aliens walking among us and controlling humanity. The man races against the clock to find a way to stop them.
The movie was a satire against the falling economy in the U.S. during the late 80's in the world of consumerist greed. Ah, now why you see why it's being remade?

I'm not much of a fan of ...

Rookie scribe Jeremy Passmore has revealed to CHUD the details of John Carpenter's proposed gangster movie THE PRINCE which the duo have been developing together over the last few years.

They call it UNFORGIVEN as a "gangster movie".

"It's definitley more of a very character based crime movie. I don't know what's going on with it right now, but the premise is that this guy was the most [badass] gangster of all time in Las Vegas, and he's left the life and created this whole new world. His wife died but he's raising his kid. He's living in the middle of nowhere and he's this very religious, trying to live a straight life guy. His daughter is now going to school at UCLA and she disappears, and he goes looking for her. The trail leads to Vegas and he has to go get her, and the entire city kind of comes down on top of him".
Carpenter is currently in pre-production on RIOT, his first movie in seven years which he has been trying to sell financing for at the AFM. It's a prison movie that follows lifer Nicolas Cage who comes to the aid of the governor's delinquent son who is sent ...

Promo art for legend John Carpenter's first movie in over SEVEN YEARS has hit the web. Shock Till You Drop carry a piece of exclusive promo art from next year's film RIOT with the tagline "Uncaged 2009" as sadly, Nicolas Cage is leading.

But not even that fact is getting me down. Carpenter (THE THING, HALLOWEEN, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13) is making a movie RIGHT NOW!

Previously titled SCARED STRAIGHT, the movie is a prison thriller about a lifer (Cage) who befriends a younger inmate on a short term "delinquent teens" sentence and shows him the ways of prison life.

The very early promo poster comes from the American Film Market expo.

Ron L. Brinkerhoff (THE GUARDIAN) wrote the screenplay with first time screenwriter Joe Gazam. The movie is currently in pre-production for a release next year.

Whenever someone tells me they don't enjoy horror films (you will be surprised how many people I know who totally dismiss the genre), I always point them towards THE THING as my response, a perfect cornerstone of what really good horror can do.

If you don't like THE THING, then I don't think there is much hope for ya!

Now we have known for a long while now that a new version of THE THING has been eyed by those in the industry, sometimes we hear it's going to be an out and out remake and then later we here it's going to be a prequel. Well the latest merry-go-round for this production says PREQUEL.

Marc Abraham, out promoting his directorial debut FLASH OF GENIUS and who is producing the movie, told Latino Review...
"This is more of a prequel than a sequel, there is your exclusive. Its going to be taking place in the same time frame... these are the events leading up to the 1982 film.”
So presumably it will delve into the origins of the shape-shifting alien and it's killings of the original Norwegian research team which pre-dates the arrival of Kurt Russell in John Carpenter's 1982 film. I guess it will ...

First Werner Herzog, and now another veteran who should know better has cast the almost useless Nicolas Cage for an upcoming thriller.

This time it's John Carpenter but let's be honest, he has hardly been sane for years.

The movie is Scared Straight, a Nu Image/Millennium Films Production that for the umpteenth time will see Cage serving jail time (Con Air, Raising Arizona, Face/Off, The Rock)...
Straight" follows a troubled youth who's sent to prison off the Scared Straight crime-prevention program, which imprisons delinquent teens for a short period in the hopes of deterring them from a life of crime. While the teen is there, a riot breaks out and the prisoners take him hostage. A lifer, played by Cage, is forced to help the young man out.
Joe Gazzam wrote the original spec script which has since been redrafted by Ron Brinkenhoff (The Guardian).

An October start date is planned. Apparently the movie was originally a Rob Cohen project, which further fuels my argument that Carpenter has gone insane.

If the movie does actually get made, it will Carpenter's first since 2001's Ghosts of Mars.
