Once Tim Burton is finished with Alice's quest down the rabbit hole, he will be taking his Mad Hatter Johnny Depp, and his Sweeney Todd writer John August to the 60's world of spooky soap opera's, with the cult gothic horror Dark Shadows, the adaptation of the daily ABC serial that ran for five years, amassing 1,225 episodes.

Depp will play Barnabas Collins, the self-loathing and tortured vamp patriarch of the series who Depp idolised, and became obsessed with as a child. Yes girls, Johnny Depp as a vampire. Doesn't that excite you?

Though it's old news that all three men would be working together on this film (John August has been writing the screenplay for Depp and Burton for a good while now), it's nice to finally have more confirmation that the movie will be Burton's next after Wonderland. Or at least, "that's the plan" as the official quotes cite him from the SDCC.

After the jump, more on Dark Shadows and how it fits in as a "Tim Burton" film...

All the staples of the Burton formula are here, as the show regularly featured werewolves, ghosts, zombies, man-made monsters and witches, and it's use of atmosphere and outlandish characters was it's hallmark. The show sounds like it very ...

John August sounding extremely dejected a few weeks ago when he revealed his script for SHAZAM had basically been dumped by Warner Bros, has just seen his luck change.

The Hollywood Reporter say he the BIG FISH and CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY scribe is to work with Tim Burton again, penning the FRANKENWEENIE prequel based on Tim Burton's 1984 comedic horror short. The movie will be stop-motion animated and made in 3-D, shot in black and white with a studio releases of 2011.

Many of Burton's collaborators and artists who worked with him on CORPSE BRIDE have re-joined him for this gig.

The trade also mentions that Sam Mendes has chosen August to scribe PREACHER, the DC/Vertigo series of the 1990's which tells the story of a down-and-out Texas preacher, given immense powers, who teams up with a former girlfriend and a hard-drinking Irish vampire and sets out on a journey across America to find God -- who apparently had abandoned his duties in heaven -- and hold him accountable for his negligence.

The movie is expected to be next for Mendes, who will be hoping his REVOLUTIONARY ROAD finds Oscar recognition today.

Warner Bros. are failing to get another DC comic book character off the ground you probably won't be surprised to hear.

This time it's Peter Segal's action comedy adaptation of Captain Marvel which went by the title of SHAZAM and was due to star The Rock as the villain Black Adam.

Screenwriter John August has updated his blog detailing the situation which is blamed on a combination of the WGA strike, the death of New Line (which took the project to WB), the monumental success of THE DARK KNIGHT matched with the flop of SPEED RACER (showing what kind of movie WB now want from their superheroes) and studio executives turning sour on the project.

You can read the very informative blog entry HERE which does a great job of showing you how these studio execs, who decide what movie it is we want to see, make their decisions. I was going to just grab bits of it but the article turned out to be so interesting I didn't want to chop it up. But here's the jist of the situation for those who simply just want to know the status of the movie...
By “dead,” I mean that it won’t be happening. I ...

Well I more than vaguely hinted at it in my original July 27th 2007 post about the story of Johnny Depp's long time ambition to bring the forgotten 60's horror t.v. show Dark Shadows to the big screen over at Warner Bros which I said could end up in the hands of Tim Burton.

It almost seemed inevitable didn't it? Burton and Depp have worked together for three of the director's films straight now, six times in total and the subject matter sounded so much up Burton's alley that there was only ever going to be on man to direct this.

IESB carry the scoop that the Burton-meister is attached to the film...
While interviewing GET SMART director Peter Segal this past weekend in Beverly Hills, he spoke briefly about writer John August. Segal says August, who is writing BILLY BATSON AND THE LEGEND OF SHAZAM for Segal over at WB, is jumping back and forth between Tim Burton's DARK SHADOWS and his SHAZAM script trying to work on both films at the same time due to a back log of work after the writers' strike earlier this year.

So, while we can't confirm the rumors of Depp starring as Barnabus Collins in DARK ...

Written & Directed by: John August

Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Hope Davis, Melissa McCarthy, Elle Fanning, David Denman

Distributed by: Newmarket Films

Film will be released on November 30th 2007 in the U.K.

Review by Michael Edwards

[rating: 3.5]

Screenwriter John August has some serious credentials, he's completed the screenplays for A Corpse Bride, Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and both Charlie's Angels outings. In The Nines he not only does the writing but takes the reigns as director, and it really paid off. August is a man who likes to play with reality, bounce between levels and versions of reality (Big Fish is case in point), and this is the raison d'etre of this outing.

The plot is comprised of three short films following the lives of an actor, a writer, and a computer games designer each of whom is is played by Ryan Reynolds. In the first actor Gary goes off the rails on a binge of drink, drugs, and accidental arson (setting the scene not just for this story but the schizophrenic nature of the film itself) which lands him under house arrest. As the tale progresses stange occurrences plague the house, and mysterious stolen moments with a neighbour hint that everything ...
