Part of me inevitably gravitates towards the opinion that what Joaquin Phoenix did next will painfully overshadow this particularly good film. A shame as well, because this is the first time in a long while that I have actually believed Phoenix deserves any of the many plaudits he's steadily picked up since stepping out of the shadow that was cruelly robbed of us when his brother died.

No doubt Phoenix's true motivations will be made clear soon enough (as if anyone is still fooled) but long after the beard lies forlornly shone in the basin of his sink, the intellect behind the intention will be questioned. If, as suspected, Phoenix is merely frolicking in the well-trodden ground that used to be Andy Kaufman's favourite haunt, I would have to wonder why he felt the need to do it, unless an uber-post-comic documentary arrives purporting to chronicle the much vaunted "real story" behind the revelation. Wouldn't that be the ultimate comment on our celebrity-obsessed cultures? A true punk on the Heat/Us Today generations.

But, Oh God, what if he's being serious- and as long as there is the thinnest of suggestion shall be burdened with this particular fear?

Anyway, on to the business of reviewing. First off, ...

Someone should sue Lionsgate under the trade descriptions act for this pitiful excuse for a movie. Firstly, there is only one lover in this film and two poorly scripted 'emotionally damaged' people who are incapable of love.

Secondly, the title makes it sound like it'll be a raunchy movie. Granted Gwyneth Paltrow inexplicably shoves one boob against a window in one scene, and there are a couple of crappy 30-second sex scenes (it makes Joaquin Phoenix look shit in bed) but there are many more unnecessarily boring scenes of the characters sending text messages or making phone calls on their mobiles! I began to suspect those guys from the Orange cinema ads got to the filmmaker (do you get those 'don't let a mobile ruin your movie' ads in the States?)

The worst thing about this movie is that I KNOW it will end up being critically acclaimed. It has Dr. Freakout himself, the man with the beard and the tortured soul, Joaquin Phoenix, and is written and directed by James Gray. It's also a pile of existential bullshit that a lot of us folk who write about film get off on (I would include myself completely within that category). But the ...

Joaquin Phoenix - in possibly the most bizarre interview I've ever witnessed - "retired from acting" a few months ago to focus on a music career.
This weekend, Phoenix took part in his first public rap performance at the Las Vegas club called LAVO. He performed three songs in total, one of which we have for you below. All three were said to be awful but I can only vouch for the one below, which I have to say is indeed fucking awful...

The disastrous performance and the odd self-deluded routine from Phoenix once again puts fuel into the fire that this whole retirement thing is just a big elaborate joke to fuck with us, whilst Phoenix takes off a year or two from the big screen. Phoenix told the People Magazine recently...

"This is who I am. This is my story...Are there people out there who think I'm a joke? I'm sure there will be ... I can't worry about that."

But that maybe not the whole truth of it. Where this gets even more bizarre, is that Casey Affleck, brother-in-law to Pheonix and who you remember was present when he made his announcement that he was retiring from acting, is apparently shooting ...

Joaquin Phoenix's extremely premature retirement is a sad loss to cinema, I hate seeing talented actors lose their passion too early. BUT, I have a feeling one role might be so juicy, might be so exciting for him, joining a team of the best artists working in cinema today and reading the writing material that has already spawned several fantastic performances a series might entice him back quickly.

If one director lays down the challenge to Phoenix and I would love him to do it, we might see Phoenix back on our screens in the Summer of 2011.

If Chris Nolan wants Phoenix for The Riddler, I don't think he could refuse. Wouldn't ya just love to see it too? (this is not a rumor, or true story... just me pondering)...

The words "Good Bye" were written on the knuckles of Joaquin Phoenix, the 34 year old actor who confirmed over the weekend at the premiere of what we know now know will be his last movie TWO LOVERS, that he had retired from acting to concentrate on his music career.

Variety carry these quotes...
"I think it's just moving on. It's rediscovering something else... "It's like greener pastures, you know what I mean?" Phoenix said Saturday. "And so, I'm just going to try and like, I'll just be doing the other thing. ... Hopefully, I will emotionally impact you with that, as well."
Phoenix, a versatile actor whose amazing talent saw him act, sound and sing with admirable resemblance to the legendary Johnny Cash that went on to win him an Academy Award nomination for WALK THE LINE just three years ago had seemed to have lost his passion for the business. His only two movies since 2005, WE OWN THE NIGHT and RESERVATION ROAD, showed an actor who wasn't trying as hard as we once was.

Phoenix's other memorable roles were the two M. Night Shyamalan movies THE VILLAGE and SIGNS, along with BUFFALO SOLDIERS, his Academy Award nominated performance as the villain ...

E! have posted a very strange video interview with two time Academy Award nominated actor Joaquin Phoenix, who says, extremely deadpan that he has quit acting to follow his music passion.

He's done with movies apparently. The whole interview feels extremely staged but we've always know Phoenix to be a serious guy, he's not one to goof around like this.

Watch the video and you decide. Real or fake announcement?

Now ever since his amazing portrayal of Johnny Cash in WALK THE LINE, an amazing step up for him as a performer... I've been shocked at how his career has gone forward.

Roles in two very ordinary drama's WE OWN THE NIGHT and RESERVATION ROAD last year, and then TWO LOVERS which is getting NO LOVE from anywhere right now, are hardly the career boost actors usually receive post Academy recognised movies.

Phoenix has no other roles upcoming, his agents aren't trying to link him with anything. Maybe he is serious. Maybe he is done. Maybe after playing his idol, Johnny Cash, he has nowhere to go and is sick of the industry?

If that's true, we are loosing a great screen actor. But let's hope he is quitting to make himself happy because he sure ...
