Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are busy writing the sequel to J.J. Abrams' other film franchise Star Trek, so the gig for Mission Impossible IV has gone to Alias co-executive producers/writers Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec.

Their task is to put together a two hour long screenplay based on the story they have concieved with Abrams and Tom Cruise.

At this point, Variety once again confirm that Abrams and Cruise are only down for producing at this point, and there's some speculation that franchise character Ethan Hunt (Cruise) may only have a small supporting part in this one, in what could be a passing of the torch movie.

After how well Cruise led Mission Impossible III, I'm hopeful he will take a starring role in this one. I have full faith in his action hero leading man abilities, he's certainly not over the hill yet. And hopefully Abrams will find time to direct, but with Star Trek 2 and this one set to be released in 2011, one would think he can't possibly do both.

Three hours ago I was sent a press release for the forthcoming boldly sized 3-disc Blu-Ray/DVD set for J.J. Abrams' smart rebooting of the Star Trek franchise, which immediately caught my attention because this is exactly how the big movies of the year should be treated on home video.

The main highlights from November released Trek set includes a roundtable audio commentary with the Trek high council of producer/director J.J. Abrams, writers Kurtzman and Orci, producer Damon Lindelof and executive producer Bryan Burk. Basically the five guys who shaped this whole thing from it's tentative and high risk original concept, all the way to the final endgame of the biggest, most profitable and most important Star Trek film of all time.

Any praise or on the other hand, ill feeling you have with the movie you should take up with those guys. The commentary promises to be a fascinating discussion and insight into the complete film-making process of rebooting a gargantuan franchise such as Trek, which had the kind of history that wikipedia was invented for.

The STAR TREK three-disc Blu-ray is presented in 1080p High Definition with English 5.1 Dolby TrueHD, French 5.1 Dolby Digital and Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital with English, English SDH, French, ...

One of the best comedy scripts I've read in the past 12 months was for The Invention of Lying, the new Ricky Gervais movie which will premiere two trailers online today at Yahoo Movies.

According to co-writer and director Matt Robinson, the U.S. will get the "domestic" trailer at 4:30PM PST and the U.K. will get the "international" trailer sometime before. The U.S. trailer has been cut by Warner Bros, the U.K. one by Universal... both with "different footage, music, everything", so it's going to be extremely fascinating to see how two different studios market the film to two different audiences.

I gotta tell you folks... no matter how hard you imagine it, you can't quite comprehend how clever a concept Gervais has stumbled across here. It's so much more than a story about a world where no-one lies... that's kind of an misdirection. What the movie really is a story where EVERYONE TELLS THE TRUTH ALL THE TIME, and it's wickedly funny.

Gervais' characters goes out on a dinner date with his love interest Jennifer Garner, a girl so far out of his league and the conversation they have (she basically tells him she ain't gonna sleep with him and the reasons ...

Despite everything that went on with Tom Cruise and Paramount three years ago, when just after the release of Mission Impossible III, Cruise was publicly fired from his lucrative studio contract due to the media spotlight surrounding his relationship with Katie Holmes, a working friendship has once again been established and a fourth movie in the MI franchise is officially on according to Variety.

The film is aiming for a 2011 release. Though strangely, Tom Cruise is currently only listed as a producer and there is no mention in the trades that he will reprise the role of Ethan Hunt. Will this be a passing of the torch movie, with only a brief cameo for the Cruise-meister?

I wouldn't have thought so, Cruise is the star and the money of the franchise and we all know he needs a big hit right now, so it's probably just a case of getting his schedule clear. We know he's got a romantic drama with Cameron Diaz setup at Fox for James Mangold to direct, and then he's awaiting on a rewrite for the David Cronenberg blockbuster The Matarese Circle that he will make with Denzel Washington... one of those might have to be sacrificed for this, probably ...

The story prologue you already have seen revealed partially in the last trailer, where Kirk’s father fights a massive squid like ship full of Romulans intent on destroying the U.S. Kelvin that he has had to take over when his Captain travels aboard the enemy vessel, then cut ahead some years and we encounter a young Jim Kirk getting into all kinds of trouble until he is persuaded to join Star Fleet by Captain Pike (yes the one from the original TV Pilot) to be all the man he can be. Then cut again to 3 years later (handy that) and we see Kirk take the infamous Kobayashi Maru test for the third time and pass, but before he is cautioned by the Academy and some ‘pointy eared bastard’ (Spock) all the cadets are called to ...

It's been an unlikely success story, but one that is becoming increasingly familiar in Hollywood that with the right talent, the right motivation, the right execution, seemingly dead franchises are rising from the grave and against all odds are thundering their way into mainstream popularity.

You needn't look any further than the past 12 months with images of The Joker plastered proudly on high street fashion t-shirts triggering a sensation of "where have you been?" for the Clown Prince of Crime, with hindsight now unthinkable that the most marketable screen villain of all time had been off our screens for two decades. Only five years ago, they were talking about not making any more James Bond movies, but it took guts and a lot of foresight to reboot the character back to his roots, and it worked magnificently with a new 007 for the 21st century.

Similarly in 2005, when the final episode of Enterprise aired, for the first time in it's long and glorious history, Paramount had no Star Trek t.v. or film in production, and no plans for that to change anytime soon. The double whammy of fans being tired of the adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and a few misfire ...

All the great magicians know it. The reason they never show you how a trick is so smartly performed right under your nose is not completely because it will show them up to be a fraud, a con-merchant, a fake or that it will reveal their secrets so they can never perform that trick again (though that clearly plays a big part of it). Part of the secrecy is that deep down, we simply don't want to know, really. Because we will never get that excitement of not knowing back.

Once we know how a trick is performed, that's it. Pack up and go home, life wouldn't be worth living. Ask Quentin Tarantino. No matter what was in that briefcase in Pulp Fiction (unless it was the Elvis costume from True Romance, because that would be pretty sweet), it will never live up to not knowing what is in that briefcase. Our expectations are simply too high.

Lost creator J.J. Abrams, the ultimate promoter of the importance of mystery in fiction has a great article from the special mystery edition of Wired Magazine now online which I enjoyed reading this morning...

As a child my Dad used to watch a fair amount of Star Trek. He watched the original Battlestar Galactica too, as well as Star Wars on video - repeatedly. I have to say that of all the sci-fi he watched I liked Star Trek the least, and that was for one simple reason: it didn't have any robots (at least not that I saw). It's the future for God's sake! Why would they not have robots doing the menial stuff? The reason I say this is that this very simple childhood logic has meant that I have spent my whole life ignorant of the Star Trek phenomenon. I didn't get into it when I was young and have never bothered to try since.

So when the best robot of them all - the J.J. Abrams hype machine - began clunking into action I was not bothered. When the trailers came out I just thought it might be a corny action film that would mobilise Trekkies, but I could not guess whether it would be for good or bad reasons. Once the whole secret screening marketing campaign began I did become intrigued. Why hide it as The Wrath of Khan?

Is this just a ...

Paramount's big gamble on showcasing Star Trek around the world a whole month before it's worldwide theatrical release is in full motion and over the next two weeks, we should start to get a firm idea whether the Kirk-esque tactical manoeuvre is a stroke of cocky genius, or is a rookie error which puts the $150 million picture on red alert.

Last night at the Alamo Drafthouse, audiences were expected to witness a celebration screening of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan as part of Ricardo Montalbahn memorial event. Instead Leonard Nimoy, Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci were in attendance for the first audience showing anywhere of the Star Trek reboot.

/film have chronicled the twitter responses from those who attended the screening. I would keep an eye on the article throughout the day as Peter Sciretta has promised to keep adding more as they come in...

bosmon: holy sh** we just saw world premiere of new #Star Trekand it’s AWESOME
jaireaux: I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. The cast is superb, the story is compelling, the action is exciting, and Abrams even avoids any blatant cheesy “winks” about his reboot. If Star Trek is the bluebird of the summer movie season, then we are in for a great ride.

In what might be the biggest vote of confidence yet for J.J. Abrams' new Star Trek movie, Paramount have already begun spending money on a sequel, hiring back writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, teaming them with Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof and with director J.J. Abrams back in a producing capacity.

He has not yet decided if he wants to direct.

The writers will wait to hear the audience reaction to their reboot before beginning work on the sequel, whose script Paramount seem to have put a deadline of Christmas on. This allows them to make Star Trek a two year franchise, just like Iron Man andTransformers to keep the money rolling in.

Paramount are clearly confident that they will make a return on their $150 million investment in May and have made the bold move to premiere the movie in April, a month before the movie is set to open. Long drawn out bad word of mouth would probably kill any hope of making their money back, so they obviously think they are onto a winner.

Kurtzman said...
“Obviously we discussed ideas, but we are waiting to see how audiences respond next month,” he said. “With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you ...

The 2006 Summer release of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE III was supposed to be the revival of Tom Cruises' mainstream popularity but despite decent worldwide box office takings and what I thought was a frikkin' killer of an action movie, the Tom/Kat thing overshadowed everything.

He could have made THE GODFATHER in 2006 and they would have been talking about Tom/Kat and not how good a movie he had made.

We know Cruise has been desperate to return to the action genre, a place he feels comfortable in right now and I've almost gone blue in the face telling you that he is probably making THE TOURIST with Charlize Theron and the director of THE LIVES OF OTHERS as his next movie, despite what you might read elsewhere.

But here's word of a movie he may have lined up a little further down the line. An AICN reader was watching Japanese T.V. when he stumbled across word of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 4...
Tom Cruise was on the popular SMAP SMAP program here in Japan (HERE), and when asked about the Mission Impossible franchise he revealed that he has started work on the fourth installment...he's working on the story right now.

He also commented that during his visit here he'd been ...

Why do I find myself saying this statement time and time again when it comes to reboots and rebranding of franchises...

"If it wasn't called STAR TREK and was based on something classic, this would be one of the best looking movies of the year!".

Because it is, really. The movie looks great, it's just about the best ensemble science fiction trailer I've seen in a long time, probably only the trailers for Danny Boyle's SUNSHINE can rival it.

Seeing the hints at the big battles involving the Enterprise, well, this is the kind of thing J.J. Abrams revels in. That ship battle just looks insane.

(we await HD links... though it is attached to WATCHMEN)

Love the backstory about Kirk's father, I didn't know that and I can't figure out whether that is Abrams' touch or whether it was part of the classic mythology that he was Captain for a cup of coffee but saved 800 lives?

This trailer is quite spectacular really, they nailed how to present this movie at the final hour. The moment Kirk sits in the chair, the classic chewing the scenery of Eric Bana, the destruction of the ship... this is one trailer with full confidence.

And is anyone else getting ...

Trek Movie have already debunked Latino Review's March 1st rumor that characters from STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION would be involved in J.J. Abrams' STAR TREK, which opens in just two months time.

It appears that the rumor began because of sketchy comments that were made at the IDW Comics panel at WonderCon, where talk was centered around the tie-in prequel comics...

"The end of issue 4 is a cliffhanger and is going to continue in the first few minutes of the movie."
Right after that was said, another writer (or artist) said that part of the movie will take place with the Next Generation crew and to look out for that. Another guy on the panel gave him a quick "uh oh" look and smiled.
After that, someone from the audience asked "So are members of the Next Generation cast in the new Trek movie?" to which the same guy replied, "I really cannot say anything about that."
You know what hardcore geeks are like, give them the slightest hint of something and they will chase up the wrong alley in pursuit of what they want, instead of what is actually there.

To reiterate what we have mentioned before, the only tie-in to current TREK continuity is ...

In 1994, STAR TREK: GENERATIONS found Malcolm McDowell desperately trying to return to the Nexus by any means necessary, including the sacrifice of billions of innocent people as he wiped out a whole galaxy so he could cross paths with the gateway to eternity. Kirk and Picard saved the day, using time travel.

In 1996, STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT found the Borg time traveling back in time to wipe out the whole of human race on Earth in the 23rd century.

In 2009, J.J. Abrams' STAR TREK will find Eric Bana as the Romulan Nero, going back in time to kill Kirk in the Academy.

But what are his motives? AICN have read the first issue of the IDW Publishing official in-canon comic prequel, whose story has been scribed by writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci which flesh out the plot for us...
In the comic Spock is something of a Jor-El figure, trying to avert a unprecedented natural disaster that threatens to obliterate Romulus and its entire star empire. Spock implores the Romulan senate to seek out the more technically advanced Vulcans; combining Romulan and Vulcan resources, Spock believes, can prevent horrifying cataclysm if they act quickly. But the old-guard Romulan leaders remain ...

I often wonder how close the final bits of editing for the average Hollywood blockbuster actually gets to the firm release date and how much compromising has to go in when that tight deadline edges closer. Movies like I AM LEGEND and HANCOCK (ironically two Will Smith starring vehicles) had to endure very late re-shoots to tweak the movie just right, I'm certain if they had more time they would have continued to tweak and tweak and tweak.

I bet for some directors, a movie is never really finished and if they could they would never give up that editing room.

Well not J.J. Abrams. In an announcement on his Facebook Page, he claims the movie will be 100% complete as of next week, a good four months before the movie is set to be unleashed...
“We’re just making final tweaks to the movie — we should be totally locked next week. Then we’re going to flash-freeze it so it’s totally fresh for you in May. I can’t wait for you to see the movie. The cast is awesome. The action and effects pushed the stunt team and ILM beyond their limits. I’m so grateful to this cast and crew — and to ...

It was announced very late it tonight's Variety that a very familiar voice will be present in J.J. Abrams' STAR TREK movie.

Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, the late widow of STAR TREK creator Gene Roddenberry who has voiced the computer voice in ALL FIVE STAR TREK series and four feature films will voice the computer in Next May's epic.

From Trek Movie...
Majel Barrett Roddenberry has been part of Star Trek since the first pilot "The Cage" where she played ‘Number One.’ Although that role was not carried over to the main series, she did get a recurring role on the show as Nurse Chapel and also played Deanna Troi’s mother Lwaxana Troi on The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. She also provided voice work as Federation and ship computers for all five Trek series and four feature films.
Along with Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock, she has been with TREK since the beginning.

The movie is likely to be in very late post-production (final touches) and we should see a heavy marketing campaign for the movie come the New Year. This is a STAR TREK movie that Paramount NEED people to know about.

Harrison Ford has told MTV that he is returning to the comedy genre. His sights are firmly set on a movie being produced by J.J. Abrams from the writer of THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA and 27 DRESSES and that could co-star Reese Witherspoon.

The movie is MORNING GLORY and was first announced last year under the helm of Roger Michell (NOTTING HILL). Take your mind back over a year where we wrote...
Aline Brosh McKenna (“The Devil Wears Prada”) is penning the screenplay, which centers on a struggling female news producer and the iconic, temperamental anchorman she recruits to revive a failing network morning show.

Bad Robot’s J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk are producing. Sherryl Clark exec produces.
Reese Witherspoon then found herself attached as the female news producer, presumably Ford will play the anchorman.

You have to go all the way back to SABRINA in 1995 to find Ford's last romantic comedy. He's got a great charm of course and a lot of the last INDIANA JONES movie saw him go through much of the rom-com routine. I would love to see him do this movie but then again, I think I would probably say that about any Harrison Ford potential project at this ...

Don't ask me why this wasn't included in the first place because I really don't know (though I can speculate it's because J.J. Abrams is worried an appearance from Nimoy, a cornerstone of the whole idea of TREK, would turn non-fans instantly off) but I'm glad to have it anyway.

AICN have an extended trailer for STAR TREK which has the first look at Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock.

Paramount Pictures insist this is an online only trailer, a pure gift to the fans at Thanksgiving.

Kinda feels a little more like TREK now.

After the success of THE DARK KNIGHT's record breaking screenings in IMAX for Warner Bros this summer ($55 million plus), rival studio Paramount Pictures are getting in on the act by showcasing next May's STAR TREK in the same format.

Now unlike that incredible opening sequence from Christopher Nolan's movie, not a single frame of TREK has been shot with IMAX camera technology however it will be converted to 70mm for projection on IMAX screens.

Also planned for the same IMAX up-scale projection next year are NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM 2: BATTLE OF THE SMITHSONIAN, TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN and HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE.

Though it must be said, TRANSFORMERS has shot some scenes with the IMAX camera's and HARRY POTTER will apparently have 20 minutes of extra bonus material for these showings.

Meanwhile, William Shatner has given his blessing to the design of the new Enterprise. Some speculate this might be because Abrams' relented and gave him a cameo in the movie after all...
