Charles Darwin is a personal hero of mine so obviously I've long been looking forward to Creation, a preposterously long time in coming biopic of one of the most important thinkers that ever existed. His work "The Origin of Species", changed the world forever and I still don't think, even in 2009, during the 200th year anniversary of his birth, that the magnitude of just what he discovered has been fully appreciated.

Richard Dawkins claims that Darwin answered the question of why we exist. So Creation indeed, is an apt title for the upcoming movie directed by his great grandson Jon Amiel, whose 2003 Hilary Swank nonsense actioner The Core never did quite go to these depths.

Paul Bettany stars as Darwin and his real life wife Jennifer Connelly here plays the scientist's wife Emma. The movie aims to look not just at Darwin's amazing discovery and his political battle in getting it out there but also the strain it caused on his family. Whilst Darwin himself was only a mild Christian (it was his doubting of the bible which springboarded his journey to agnosticism), his wife was of devout faith.

The line "Do you not care that you and I might be separated for all of eternity" is so strong ...

Robert Wise's 1951 Cold War-era THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL was a cut above the rest. Dealing with the simple story of an alien named Klaatu, landing on Earth in a flying saucer to warn the population that they must live peacefully or be destroyed as a threat to other planets. Klaatu had an invincible and very protective robot companion named Gort, who could unleash fearsome power when intimidated. The situation provoked fear in audiences and led to a brooding, unpretentious quality that evoked tangible tension out of its haunting predicament. It had suspense, it had restraint, and it was within a class of its own.

On the contrary director Scott Derrickson's (who debuted with dreary HELLRAISER: INFERNO then managed to spellbound some audiences with eerie courtroom horror THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE) reimagination is an insignificant, bloated, emotionally redundant mess, with a tendency to paint over its muddled plot deficiencies with laughable sequences of CGI nonsense and banal dialogue that makes the original resemble Shakespeare.

But at least the initial built up is unsettling enough to provoke some moments of anticipation - and dare I say it, it is during these moments that the tone was almost akin to the eerie unease ...

After ironically struggling to get the horror movie Born into the filming stages earlier this year, The Hollywood Reporter say that real life couple Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly will try again to work on a movie together with a film titled Creation.

Similar title, though this is a completely different project and is actually extremely interesting.

The movie is a biopic of Charles Darwin, which will see Bettany play the founder of the theory of evolution and Connelly his wife Emma. It will be based on the novel Annie's Box which was written by Darwin's Great Grandson Randal Keynes and has been adapted for screen by John Collee.

"John Collee's compelling script tells the remarkable story behind Darwin's revolutionary theory and the foundation of a book that changed the world," said Oscar-winning producer Jeremy Thomas, the force behind the project. "We think of Darwin as an old man with a gray beard. The reality of our story is very different."
Collee was the screenwriter of Master and Commander, a movie that Bettany himself gave his best on screen performance to date back in 2003 and was shamefully robbed of an Academy Award nomination. Jon Amiel - helmer of The Core, Entrapment and The ...

20th Century Fox have debuted two new posters for it's "environmentally conscious" remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still which opens on December 12th.

You may think I'm purposefully being really harsh and I'm hoping this film fails (actually I do) but when they keep releasing shitty stuff, I will keep blasting them for it. There is no excuse for making posters as lame as this...

John Cleese can be added to the wealth of acting experience lined up for Scott Derrickson's THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL redo, a movie that marks his second directorial project after the 2005 creepy courtroom drama THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE.

He will play the character of Dr. Barnhardt, the physicist who plays a pivotal role in figuring out the message and meaning of why the alien Klatu has arrived on Earth.

Will Cleese play the role straight or has been added for the film's comic relief? Cleese hasn't done a serious part in years, his most recent credits being a "Grizzled Sergeant" in AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS, the voice of King Harold in the SHREK movies and the voice of a sheep in CHARLOTTE'S WEB.

He also has a role in the upcoming PINK PANTHER sequel.

I can't help but feel that this remake will be as quiet a release as the INVASION OF THE BODYSNATCHERS redo was earlier this year. And although I never want a movie to fail, if sacrificing this remake meant that remakes of quality sci-fi movies lessens, then that might be the one good thing to come out of this project.

The movie is scheduled for ...
