As expected, Hedge Funds will be the villain of Wall Street 2 (seriously great title guys, it's so much better than Money Never Sleeps, right?) and according to Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood Daily, they will be fronted by the villainous Javier Bardem.

Michael Douglas' sleeze bag Gordon Gekko is being postioned as the good guy this time around and will attempt to garner our sympathy by patching up his estranged relationship with his daughter after spending a lengthy spell in prison. Shia LaBeouf is the man in the middle, as an ambitious Charlie Sheen esque stockbroker who is engaged Grekko's daughter but has a bit of a breakdown when his stockbroking mentor is unexpectedly killed due to the pressures of the job.

Shia of course blames Bardem's Hedge Fund Manager. The film will look at the events from June 2008 to now, with the recent Federal bailout included and a reformed Gekko seeing the future clearer than ours, knowing the market is about to sink.

Finke reports...
Shia goes to Gordon saying, 'I need your help', and makes a Faustian deal with Gekko who in return wants Shia's help getting back with the daughter. From then on, it's 'antagonism' for everyone".

Matt here and delighted to tell you that Woody Allen has finally secured a British release date for VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA. Though it won't be till February... you could probably get the Region 1 DVD imported by then! Oh well!

This was in my top five anticipated movies of 2008 and it's so cool to read that Oliver believes the movie gets Allen back to his MATCH POINT best...

It pleases me to report that Woody Allen's lastest film VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA is a warm, welcome return to comedic form that sees the director revived by an exotic fresh new location, a talented cast of recently accomplished actors, gorgeous sun-drenched aesthetics (courtesy of Pedro Almodovar's regular DP Javier Aguirresarobe) and a script that is probably Allen's best written work in 20 years.

BARCELONA concerns two young American women taking vacation in the romantic resides of the titular Spanish haunt. Vicky (Rebecca Hall) is a head-strong conservative type who is a grad student and is set to marry the idealistic man of her dreams, while Cristina (Scarlett Johansson) is a sexually adventurous aspiring short-filmmaker who likes to experience life on the edge.

The two girls meet Spanish charmer Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem), an impressionable painter ...

Variety carry the official confirmation that Academy Award winning Javier Bardem will lead Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's next picture BIUTIFUL.

The movie about a man embroiled in shady dealings who reunites with a childhood friend who unfortunately for him is now a policeman will begin shooting in Barcelona next week and filmed in Spanish.

BIUTIFUL marks the first movie from Inarritu after his very public split with his former screenwriting partner Guillermo Arriaga whose collaboration on AMORES PERROS caught Hollywood's eye where they then went on to make the Academy recognised 21 GRAMS and BABEL.

The problems were over the writing credits on BABEL with the disagreements becoming so heated, Arriaga was shunted out of making an appearance at the film's premiere at Cannes in 2006.

So for this pic at least, Inarritu is working from his own script but will be reunited with cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto and composer Gustavo Santaolalla... with his good friends Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuaron producing.

Kingdom of Heaven co-stars Orlando Bloom and Liam Neeson will topline the currently untitled movie adaptation of Bill Carter's memoirs Fools Rush In, based on his life as an aid worker in Sarajevo during the bitter Balkans war siege that lasted 43 months.

Academy Award winner Javier Bardem is in talks for a supporting role. Established Brazilian director Andrucha Waddington will make his English language film-making debut.

"I read the script, and the very human story and the very core of this film spoke to me very clearly," Bloom told reporters in Sarajevo. "This is a departure from the very big Hollywood productions."

The film should begin lensing before the end of the year, with the full backing and support of the major of Sarajevo.

With the constant delays on Joe Carnahan's epic Killing Pablo, it's with little surprise today to report that star Javier Bardem has pulled out of the picture.

In fact, going one further than that Bardem has told Coming Soon that the scoop on him starring in the picture was " a mistake" from the start and that it simply "wasn't true" he was ever set to play Columbian drug lordr Pablo Escobar.

It's also unknown if Christian Bale is still attached to the project as the cop hell bent on tracking Escobar down. With the role being so similar to that of the role he plays in Public Enemies, one does have to wonder if he chose Michael Mann's project when it was obvious this one was some way off from being ready.

Meanwhile, as recently as July 31st, Joe Carnahan was scouting locations for the film and let everyone on his blog know that he hopes to begin shooting in the fall.

Suffering an eerily similar delay is the Oliver Stone produced and Antoine Fuqua directed Escobar, which looks at the exact same story of Escobar's rise and fall and has The Bourne Ultimatum and Vantage Point's Edgar Ramirez attached to lead.

That project ...

Matt here... Eugenio is currently out enjoying the Sun in Cannes and has been sending us some of his thoughts from the festival. First off, he got to see Woody Allen's latest movie Vicky Cristina Barcelona and sent us this very early review which you can read after the image...

Not surprisingly, Woody Allen decided to open his new film out of competition here at Cannes - the director hates attending and receiving
prizes. But the film was nevertheless very well received here at the festival and it is undoubtedly his most crowd pleasing and accessible film
for years.

A story of two girls finding love and questioning their own approach to life, "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" follows closely the template of Allen's recent Melinda and Melinda in examining and contrasting the different psychologies of two women. Its mix of tragedy and comedy, and a very heavy use of voiceovers, is also very reminiscent of the 2004 film.

Both Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and Cristina (Scarlett Johansson) travel to Barcelona for some change from their New York setting and are soon involved with passionate artist Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem) who can't forget the tempestuos marriage he had with fellow artist Maria Helena (Penelope Cruz). The usual exchange ...

2008 Academy Award winner Daniel Day-Lewis is in talks to replace 2008 Academy Award winner Javier Bardem in the upcoming musical Nine from director Rob Marshall (Chicago). Bardem dropped out of the project some weeks back after several delays on the project, mainly because of the WGA strike at the turn of the year.

Talk about finding a suitable replacement.

Day-Lewis would play Guido Contini...
The role is a famous film director who experiences personal and creative crisis while trying to balance all the women in his life.

The original stage musical was inspired by the Fellini film "8½"; Michael Tolkin adapted the screenplay, and Anthony Minghella turned in a rewrite before he died.
If talks go well he would join an all star cast that includes Penelope Cruz, another 2008 Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard, Sophia Loren, Nicole Kidman and Judi Dench will play the women.

Pretty awesome news. Anything that keeps Day-Lewis acting instead of away from cinema is welcomed by me. Is their a better actor working today?

Wow - three of the last year's Oscar winners and then the likes of Dench and Kidman. Absolute Box Office Gold!

So Woody Allen ditches London, his "home away from home" for the first time in a few years and flies off to explore another part of Europe with Vicky Cristina Barcelona - a love quadruple flick (there's four people, so it can't be a triangle) that will debut at Cannes next week.

The movie stars Academy Award Winner Javier Bardem - no longer with that creepy hairstyle from No Country For Old Men and now very much back to his charming ways as he gets to bed not only Rebecca Hall - not only Penelope Cruz but Scarlett Johansson to.

And the word is - and the trailer certainly hints as much - that there's a passionate three way between Johansson, Cruz and Bardem. Oh yes, that's something I've dreamed off many nights - those two lovely ladies have been my number 1 and number 2 obsessions ever since Open Your Eyes and Ghost World.

The plot - as if you care at this point is that Bardem is a painter who enters a relationship with two American tourists (Hall & Johansson) which makes his ex-girlfriend jealous (Cruz). It's a Woody Allen movie which recently has meant tempers flare and not everyone ...

Nicole Kidman's rare performance where I thought she was absolutely sensational was Baz Luhrmann's movie Moulin Rouge and according to The Hollywood Reporter she will be looking to replicate that kind of success for Nine, Rob Marshall's adaptation of the Tony-Award winning musical based upon the famous Fellini movie 8 1/2.

The trades say Kidman and British vet Judi Dench are in final talks to join the movie which is slated for a September start. Originally it was due to film in March but with the WGA strike and the failing health of the now late Anthony Minghella (he was doing re-drafts late last year) that became impossible and it had to be pushed back.
Javier Bardem leads the film as a film director who must juggle the lives of various women in his busy and stressful life. Penelope Cruz, Marillon Cotillard and Sophia Loren will play three of the women and if Kidman joins that will be four.
Marshall was the director who brought us the 2002 musical adaptation of Chicago and also Memoirs of a Geisha. I know nothing of the play except for the fact that I hope it's different enough in tone to the film because if it's not, ...

How cool is it that Francis Ford Coppola is making films again?

I've recently secured myself a copy of his latest film the terribly distributed Youth Without Youth starring Tim Roth and Bruno Ganz which I have seen around half of at this point (I hate watching movies half way and then resuming them later but I had no choice for this one). So far it's a terrifically interesting movie and much more on the thriller side of things than I was expecting.

Youth Without Youth was certainly not a one movie comeback for Coppola to go straight back into the wilderness again. He is already well in development on his next picture Tetro and it's that movie which concerns this post.

The Hollywood Reporter says Academy Award Winner Javier Bardem has dropped out of the film and his character actually changed to a woman and replaced by a female actress. Veteran Spanish actress Carmen Maura will play his part of a literary critic and mentor to Tetro (Vincent Gallo), whose younger brother (Alden Ehrenreich) searches for him in Argentinia's capital city.

The massive 11 week rehearsal schedule before filming begins late Summer seems to have interfered with Bardem's role in Rob Marshall's movie ...

The Weinsteins have snapped up a Woody Allen film again and here's hoping they do a better job of marketing and releasing the pic than they did with his last movie CASSANDRA'S DREAM. The movie which unbelievably was a cool looking crime/thriller SET IN ENGLAND with BRITISH ACTORS Colin Farrell, Ewan McGregor and Tom Wilkinson didn't even secure a theatrical release in the U.K. despite the Weinsteins distributing the movie in other foreign markets and of course in the U.S.

Though a U.S. release is one way of putting it. Dumping the film is another! The widest release the Weinsteins gave it was 105 theatres, which has earned the movie a pitiful $742, 212 domestic.

So it's time to move on and look forward to VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA...

Finally we have a plot for the movie, which I have been dreaming about ever since I heard Penelope Cruz, Rebecca Hall and Scarlett Johansson would be together on screen...
Just as New York City was the backdrop in Woody Allen's Manhattan, the stunning city of Barcelona is the setting for the romantic adventures of Vicky and Cristina. These two young Americans spend a summer in Spain and meet a flamboyant artist (Bardem) and his beautiful ...
